I brought my car there a little over a month ago with an oil leak. I told him i was pretty sure it was a warped plastic oil pan but the guy assured me it was the oil level sensor. He assured me that lots of cars have plastic oil pans and it's nothing to worry about. So i pay him $700 to fix it. Turns out it didn't fix my leak, was leaking just as badly. So i brought it back to him, and what do you know? Hes explaining to me on the phone that it's because the plastic oil pan was warped. He did seem to feel sorry and give me a good deal on replacing the oil pan, so i spent another 500. He tried to say that fixing one oil leak can cause another, but the oil was clearly leaking from the oil pan the first time i brought it in. I even have obvious photos of it from before I ever brought it to him the first time. I shouldn't have let him convince me it was the sensor. Could he be right? Maybe. But I think the evidence leans towards he made a mistake. Which is fine, mistakes happen. But he could at least admit it. read more

So, basically you are missing out if you don't bring your car here. As a female who has owned a long line of used cars, I have a sixth sense for when auto mechanics try to put one over on me in order to increase the bill since I do not know a lot about cars. That happens about 75% of the time. Usually I'm stuck and have no choice but to pay. ZERO of that here. They were friendly, upfront, and they charged much less than the dealer would have I'm sure. I was surprised at the price. (Pleasantly!) They kept in contact with me and told me exactly what I needed in specific details and honestly they did a great job. They also gave me the heads up on some maintenance that will need to be done in the future, but said it didn't even need to be done now. Just really nice to plan. Gilliand serves as my primary auto maintenance shop. Jonathan has been keeping my old Chevy Truck running well. They offer great service and are quite friendly. It is good to see a small business thrive so well. They aren't the cheapest (but generally competitive). Since a person's vehicle is their lifeline, do you you really want to go cheap? The mechanics at his shop are actual mechanics and not just oil change techs at many shops. After continuing patronage, they definitely recognize it. I've had a couple times where I've gone in and they spent a few minutes to check and say "well, you really only need this..." then they don't charge me for the quick look. Sometimes I've fixed it myself, other times I've just had them order/install the part. As for the previous reviewer and his alternator...the shop likely quoted him an OEM part. Aftermarket parts are a bit cheaper, but I usually stick with OEM on many things. You'll need to specify what brand of part you want. read more

I took my car in to figure out why i had a coolant leak. considering i have a Cavalier with 154,000 miles, i was not surprised that the water pump needed replacement. Gilliland took a day or so and the car was ready, but there was obviously a new noise. Unfortunately, there was a new problem and it took a couple days and a talk with their AC Delco tech person to figure out something happened with my timing chain while they were doing the water pump change. No worries, they changed the timing chain and refused to even let me pay for parts. They run a good operation at Gilliland. I'll be heading back, but hopefully not too soon. read more

After making an appt & then showed up following early AM, they now tell they cannot do a simple oil change and a tire rotation. Why? Our Dodge Ram van is too big. First and foremost, let me say that I normally don't write reviews. I took my truck in knowing in the back of my mind that I had a bad fuel pump. Walt was very friendly and actually made me feel like a customer. He explained what he would do and the following day, he called with a quote. I had done research online and knew about what it would cost before the quote came in. I had went to a site that does estimates of what others have paid for similar work in our area. (repairpal.com) They estimated it would have cost between $553.00 and $796.00. Walt had quoted me $639.00 including tax. He wasn't the cheapest, but he was fair and it was to the penny, what he said it would be. They did the work and I didn't feel like I had been taken to the cleaners when I left. They also warrantied the part that they had replaced for 1 year and the labor, should it fail, for 90 days. All things considered, I would recommend their work to others. read more

This place is alright, but quite expensive. Every time I have had work done here, the repair bill is quite a bit higher than other places. Service is fast, though. I usually get my card back the same day I drop it off. And the problem is always fixed. So: You pay a premium, but the work is done right and done quickly. read more

I can't say enough about the service my daughter and I received from Jonathan and the mechanics at Gilliland Motors. My daughter's fully packed car began to overheat as we were preparing for our drive back home about 120 miles away. While it might not sound daunting if you live in town it was a bit of an ordeal as I am not from the area and was relying on Yelp for a suggestion. I called and Jonathan told me to bring the car up and he would check it out, he couldn't guarantee it would be fixed that day ( it was already 2pm) and with that kind of honesty I already knew I had found a good mechanic. The mechanic quickly diagnosed my problem, replaced the non-functioning fan and even identified that the car was a quart low on oil. They took the car out for a test drive and had us on our way- start to finish- in about 2 1/2 hours. Wow! We are home now with no car problems! thank you! My husband and I have been taking our pos lemon of a car to this place for years, probably since 2007 or 2008, and have definitely spent in the range of thousands of dollars on repairs. We are there at least yearly, if not multiple times per year, for one thing or another. Service has always been okay, issues have been resolved, and it's all been fine. Until this time. After all of these years and all of our loyalty, today my husband was called an irresponsible liar by the owner of this establishment. We went to pick up our vehicle at exactly 5 PM on a Thursday, which is when we said we would be there. The place was locked up tight, obviously having closed early. No one was there, or if they were, they were ignoring us. My husband knocked on the door, called, and nothing. We had to wait until the next day to pick up our car (which wasn't fixed; they didn't know what was wrong with it). When we went to pick it up, my husband went in and asked if they had closed early yesterday because we had been there exactly at 5 to pick up our vehicle. The guy, who we later found out is the owner, flew off the handle calling my husband (and by default, me, as I was also there at 5 PM with my husband for the car switch) a liar and irresponsible (for some reason, not sure how responsibility factored in at all). I wasn't there (I was waiting outside in our other car to make sure our crappy car would start after being outside all night) so I don't know all that was said word for word, but I know my husband also got angry. What can you expect, though, as a paying customer, when you're called a liar? The customer service was appalling. My husband called a little but later to apologize for his behavior and spoke with the other guy that had been there who agreed the situation should have been handled differently by the owner. Nevertheless, we will never return to this place again and will let everyone we know about this disgusting display of "customer service." I will be sending out a companywide email to the 200+ employees at my work here in West Lafayette, right down the street from this place, to warn them about the treatment they can expect to receive here. I am identical to everyone else with a car problem and no clue where to go. I read everyone's reviews for everyplace nearby, and try to make a decision based on that. But since everyplace's reviews are such a mixed bag ranging from "I love this place so much I'm naming my next kid after it!" to "this place murdered my chihuahua and set fire to my mother in law's hair". It makes it incredibly difficult to scavenge out the best place to actually take my car. What a relief that my blind, shot in the dark (but not total dark. I posted on FB that after narrowing down my potential brake fixing shops to 15 possibilities, the first response was my pastor recommending Gillilands, which I was kind of leaning toward, because it's walking distance from home- along with 4 other places.) Taking the car to Gillilands turned out to be the best possible decision I ever could have made! They came in under budget and an hour ahead of schedule. The guy at the counter knew my pastor, and once he looked at my car, immediately identified the couple I'd bought it from. It was a surreal, Mayberry-esque experience, complete with honest, ethical mechanics, that actually believe in outdated anecdotes like "the customer pays our wages" and respond accordingly. I am so excited about the incredible job they did, I am looking forward to someday breaking down and needing to be towed there! Jk. But I am planning to start showing up there for everything- my oil changes, my tire rotations, my stupid cigarette lighter that wont charge my phone and I dont know where the fusebox is, everything! Their service is horrible, I do not think they have ability to fix car, I could not start my car about 2 weeks ago, I put my car in their shop and let them fix, but only 2 weeks later after they fixed my car I could not start my car again, they did not fix problems at all, also they messed up my cars and caused other problems. My now deceased stepfather took his car in for a brake master cylinder, they said it did not fit? Then admitted that they had broken the brake lines. Later with an oil light coming on, they said they fixed a lifter, but it was really a sender (fixed at the dealership) but they did lose an o-ring off the valve cover so it now leaks oil. Then, when a battery was bad, they said it was fine and wouldn't replace it. read more

We have used Gilliland's for several years and while they may not be the cheapest place in town they are by far one of the most honest and best to work with. Cheapest place in car repairs is not always the best and I found that out by trial and error. There have been at least three times where any auto place could have made money off of our car repairs and Gillilands took the honest path every time. An example: My 20 year old daughter had an appointment with Gilliland's to put on new brakes. She took her car in, they hoisted it up and brought the car right back down telling her she didn't need new breaks yet because she had a high percentage of pad left on her old ones. She walked away not paying a penny and returned to them 6 months later for her new brakes. AMAZING! I have referred friends and they all have been treated fairly and continue to go there as well.
