Nearly 2.5 years (and $13k+) after our electrical service was upgraded, fully permitted by the city and PG&E, we came to realize that final inspections on the work were never completed. Gill's has pulled a new city permit, but scheduled a city inspection out of order, before PG&E meter was in compliance. Now untangling the mess -- a new PG&E permit is required. All this holding up another, necessary electrical job that has been neatly completed (by another licensed electrician) and awaits sequential sign-offs on previous job. Terrible family. Very poor environment to work in. they don't provide health insurance to workers and the "bonus " and paid vacation benefits are not separate. The vacation you take that everybody takes during the holidays is your bonus.lol. they also don't believe in giving references so even if you work there for 10 years and leave, they will not say you wirked there!?! which I find very manipulative. The whole family is terribly unhappy. I liked the job and had fun doing shipping and packaging but the owners are very un-human, especially the old woman. read more

Gill's helped us in a jam after losing power at the Baywood Apartments in Oakland last week. I knew when I saw their vehicles outside the building that the problem would be taken care of asap in very professional manor. Gill's had worked for me in the past when I was the chief engineer at the Essex on Lake Merritt in Oakland. After our transformer and all leads to our building were compromised Gill's had us back on line in less than 2 days into our blackout which also affected our emergency generator. We needed outlets close to our toilet bidets for easy power hookup. The electric work was completed within 4 hours of calling Gill's Electric. Megan gave an approximate estimate on the phone and took care of the logistics. I've used Gill's for years, expecting and getting excellent service. Recently I had an issue with some outside lighting that's critical because the City of Berkeley has never installed a street light on our block. As a result, the only lighting are my "lamp posts" and fence lights. The lamp posts went off during a brief power outage and wouldn't come back on. They're light sensitive, going on when it's dark and off when the sun comes up. It took 3 visits to fix a very quirky problem, but Gill's stayed on it and only charged me for one visit. I had received a referral from a neighbor for Gill's and they did not disappoint. I started with a small project to install a new outlet, but was impressed, so decided to use them for a full re-wire job to remove old knob & tube wiring and install a new sub-panel. I got multiple quotes, and Gill's was reasonably priced and able to move quickly. My project manager was Will, and Denis was the lead Electrician. Denis and his team were always on time, extremely professional, and communicated well when asking questions and getting direction from me and my wife to make sure they were installing the circuits and new lighting to our liking. I still maintain that from the outset there was poor follow-through starting with James who did not complete the paperwork that had to be submitted before I could get HO insurance. It didn't get better because after that a delay of work that needed to be completed was either never scheduled or put off. I'm know there are less expensive and equally competent electricians who can do what needs to be done without the angst that was part and parcel of what was experienced with Gill's Electric. So, if you value your time and want to save money my suggestion is that you hire another company to do the job! read more

Two other electricians told me I needed to replace my main panel. I had Gill's come out to give me an estimate for replacing the panel, but they told me my problem could be repaired inexpensively without a panel replacement. Two hours later, they had solved my problem. I only had to pay for two hours labor and some parts. Very happy with Gill's. read more

Gills Electric put in a ceiling fan for us. We paid $350. After the electrician left we noticed a creaking sound coming from the ceiling. Asked them to follow up. They guy listened to the creak for 30 seconds, said he couldn't do anything about it because it was "the design of the fan." We have the same fan in the other room. It doesn't creak. Received a second bill for $240. They never said they were going to bill us for the follow up. If they had we would have called Berkeley Electric instead. They are far more responsible. In summary: Gills Electric did a poor job. Refused to fix it. Billed us twice. The fan still creaks. I don't often read or leave yelp reviews. The only 2 I have ever written were positive. The negative review thing isn't my jam but this was egregious and we had no recourse. What are you going to do - take someone to court over a bill? Not very practical. So I'm leaving this review to warn potential customers. Gills Electric is not a good choice. I'll put this review on google too. If anyone has ideas about where else I should post this, please leave a comment. Again, not normally a review person, I think I've aged out of the internet at this point. But if this is how we do things now, so be it. Best others know to avoid. read more

-Too expensive for small jobs -Work seemed mediocre I hired Gill's Electric a few months ago. The biggest issue here is that I allowed them to come in and work when I was not home. I came home and found a job that was not to my standards. I was billed over $3k and this was literally a simple quick job. I complained and was discounted $300 as a convenience fee or something. Too expensive for mediocre work. Thankfully it was not an important job, I ended up using a different company for a big electrical project and was extremely satisfied. read more

I dont often post reviews, but I am kind of sick of this. First of all, it takes forever to schedule an appointment - half of the time my calls were not returned and I had to call and call and call. Then when the electrician came out, he did decent work, but apparently work wasn't up to code, so now I have a panel that won't pass inspection and there is noone to talk to. read more

Gill's Electric has always been very responsive to our needs. We have been working with them for over 20 years. This time a fixture that they had set up failed. So they came out and replaced it at no charge and we had them do some other work at the same time. They set up a motion sensor light fixture on our back patio off the basement. Excellent! and a timer for the front area of the house. I would name the techs but there have been at least five and they have all been great. Since Gill's is so responsive when needed, I wanted to be responsive to them. They deserve five stars!
