The former owners of our house did a lot of shoddy work and deferred a lot of maintenance to this 100-year-old home, and we learned the hard way that they also had some dangerous, unpermitted electrical work done at some point after we suddenly lost power to the living room and upstairs bedroom on a Monday morning. By some miracle, the wire that got overloaded and caught fire in the garage petered out on its own instead of turning into a full-blown garage fire. We had three companies come out to assess what happened and quote us to fix the issue. Wire Tech were the only ones that gave us a comprehensive, intelligent, thorough explanation about what happened, which in summary was: - We had a 50 amp panel in a 100 amp box, and the panel wasn't even installed into the box properly. - Fifty amps was barely enough to run a microwave without overloading our wires. - We had a ton of ungrounded wiring throughout the house. Basically, a major hazard that needed addressing ASAP. They gave us three different options on how to move forward and the pricing for each; we decided to rewire the entire house. It took about a week and a half, with the crew working Monday through Friday, to get it all done. The guys showed up early every day, consistently, and immediately got to work. They worked on multiple rooms at once. Everyone we worked with was a polite professional. Communication -- in-person, via email, and over the phone -- was clear and regular. They also repaired any holes they needed to make in our walls and sanded everything to prep for us to paint over the repair, which I really appreciated. My only minor complaint was that, while they were pretty neat and tidy for the most part and laid down plastic all over the floors and furniture, they could've been neater. In our bedroom, for example, they didn't put any plastic over our bed, so there were shards of splintered wood on the bedding and all over the floor (and if they did put plastic over the bed, it didn't do much to protect it). Of all the rooms, where we walk in socks or barefoot, that's one of the worst for that to happen in. They also forgot to turn the heat back up on our water heater, so the next day after they finished, I took a freezing cold shower in the morning and didn't know what was going on until I called the office and Karen, who is incredibly nice, told us how to check for what might've happened with the water heater and we fixed the issue ourselves. They also broke a vintage stool that we had in the garage, which I had to throw out, which we didn't know about until we stumbled across it. And by broke I mean crushed almost flat; I don't know if someone tried to stand on it or put something heavy on it, but that was really disappointing to find. Small gripes aside, their pricing was very competitive and especially compared to the other company who quoted us for a full rewiring. Their work has a 10-year warranty. They took the time to show us how the new breaker system worked before they left. It's been maybe a month or so since they finished the job and so far, so good. We're very grateful to them for making our house much safer and giving us some peace of mind. Along with getting a new roof, this has been the most significant project and upgrade we've made to our home since owning it, and they made it as easy as I imagine this process could've possibly gone. It was to diagnose several GFCI outlets that was not working and replaced the broken one. Put out a service request and they were the most responsive of about the 8 electricians my request was sent to. Their scheduler worked with me and my ever changing schedule. You get a message when the electrician is on the way to your evaluation but it took over 1.5 hrs from the time I got the message to when he came so maybe he was coming from really far. Assessor was professional and answered the questions. The only thing was at the end I asked if he could email me the assessment because this was for an inspection I had to pass and he said he did, but good thing I checked my email because I didn't get it. I had to run out of the house and catch him while he was still in the car and ask him to email me evaluation before he left. read more

I recently moved into a 1950s constructed home where the inspection stated that the original bare copper wiring was and I quote "nearly at its limit". I also do not view houses as stores of value or investments, but as homes. And I wanted a home I would feel safe in, so I decided I wanted the house rewired and brought up to NFPA standards, and I wanted to have an electric water heater installed before I would move in. After searching around a bit, I landed on Wire Tech Electric. I spoke with Olvin, and we did a quick review of the property. Out of the handful of electricians willing to even do a full rewire they were the only ones who were able to get started right away, and they did! Work started in mid-February, and completed in early May, and those last 3-4 weeks were just waiting on the city of Oakland and PG&E to approve the placement of some meters and to pass the inspection (which it did, and without any issues whatsoever!) Working with Olvin and his crew was a a pleasant experience. They would send emails or texts for when someone would be on site, communicated with me when they had questions if they ran into problems (and in a house this old, we did once or twice!), and explained to me why some choices had to be made to stick to minimum safety requirements. After the work was completed I've only had to call them out on one or two occasions, none of which were emergencies. The first was one of the breakers for my kitchen was a little *too* sensitive. To be fair most people don't have a toaster, microwave, and coffee machine all on one circuit and all on at the same time. The other time was a bathroom fan that started randomly turning on because the moisture sensor for the switch turned out to have been damaged by some water getting in there. Woops! I am extremely satisfied with the work Wire Tech did, and I'll be recommending them to my friends around the Bay Area. Oh, and one more thing, I had hired them to do some additional work to make sure I could install an HVAC, a new bathroom fan, and replace a chandelier. I was very impressed by the professionalism of Wire Tech Electric. Olvin called me and arrived 15 minutes early for our appointment for installing two digital timer switches to control our outside lights. We wanted to replace the old-style timer switches in big metal boxes that needed to be adjusted every few weeks to make the lights come on at sunset and off at dawn. I chose the Honeywell Daysmart 7-Day In-Wall Digital Timer which is really simple to program for dusk-to-dawn. But the old timers had to be removed, wall opened up, old junction box adapted to accommodate the modern switch dimensions. Olvin did everything quickly and even patched the wall openings around the new switches and then cleaned up the work area afterward. His price for the work and materials was very reasonable. This company sucks. They keep sending me an invoice for a dispatch fee but I have asked multiple times to get back to me about waiving it since I have done business with them before. My old house doesn't have all of the wiring needs for the modern age (even after being re-wired last year), and Wire Tech Electric was able to set up dishwasher and garbage disposal outlets (with dedicated circuits), an outdoor outlet (with dedicated circuit so we can run all the power tools we want), and a new 3-way switch in the dining room so we don't have to run through the dark to turn off the light at night. It's a small house, but it's so easy to stub your toes in the dark. Juan and Jose worked quickly and efficiently and I appreciated their attention to detail.
