I stopped in during a trip to Chicago based on a recommendation from a friend. I found the restaurant crowded and it took a bit to find a seat at the bar, but enjoyed a wonderful cocktail while I was there. When I was seated I had what was honestly the best Caesar salad I've ever had (with salmon!) and a pasta a la vodka. The pasta was tough and undercooked but the sauce was delicious. The atmosphere here is trendy, loud and fun. The food is meant to share and I enjoyed the rest of my dinner for breakfast the next day. Make sure you take a trip to the bathroom during your visit. There is a fun hallway full of photo strips from the photo booth downstairs. read more

Great experience and great service! The food was good as well. The bone marrow was such a highlight, it was so rich and the bread was the perfect dip. The piccata chicken had a crunchy skin and would be good if you don't mind the taste of capers. The mussels were so tender and juicy. The mushroom carbonara hit the spot as well. read more

It had been years since I'd been to Gilt bar, and I was expecting to walk into the same minimalist, high ceiling establishment with an open kitchen in the back with delicious steak tartare and mussels. Welp, they completely restyled the place and it now has the feeling of an old man's christmas bar, which was fine by me. And the menu still had my favorite items on it. Really enjoyed the ambiance, food and drinks here. The quality of service and food sustained over the years, and I will always look for a reason to come back here. read more

From the beginning to the end, Gilt is one of my favorite restaurants I've ever eaten at. Pros: - Service is on it and always makes sure you're taken care of. - The vibe is perfect. It's dark and the Victorian wallpaper makes you feel cozy. - The food is amazing. I had the spicy shrimp pasta and I've never had anything like it. The heat builds in a pleasant way and the breadcrumbs give it a great crunch. - They make you feel special. I came for my anniversary and it was acknowledged several times. Even complimentary champagne and dessert. - The skillet cookie was phenomenal. It melts in your mouth. Cons: - N/A While in the Windy City, my wife chose this place as the number one place she wanted to go for dining. Man, this was a home run. We had onion rings during happy hour which were $8. Did I mention this a Michelin Star restaurant? Can you even go to an Applebees and get onion rings for $8 anymore?!?!?!? Happy hour was popping. $8 onion rings and $7 Highballs. Also, the house wine was $6 a glass. Those prices can't be beat. Of course the onion rings and sauce were delicious. My wife had the vodka rigatoni and I had some and boy.....you can tell that's handmade pasta. My spicy shrimp was to die for. If you can handle heat, (mildly honestly) get this. The contrast in flavors and textures hit. Make yourself a reservation and come here. read more

Really nice speak easy restaurant. You would never know it existed hidden behind one of the downstairs doorways. Service was really good. We reserved the whole room for work and it was a set menu. The food was delicious. My favorite was the tasty moist chicken but I also like the truffle based fetucini pasta. Cocktails were nicely crafted. I had multiple martinis including an espresso martini. The bill was expensive but work reimbursed me so no worries . A great experience and venue to hold a team or customer dinner read more

Been there one time for the happy hour.amazing ambiance (romantic semi-dark) and lovely music.The hostess stuff were very nice but the bartender kinda rude. The old fashion was 6$ (plus taxes) for the happy hour ,he charged us 8$ (plus taxes) was weird cuz by curiosity we checked the official website and it was write the same price that we knew 6$ since my friend was there many times. I'll go back there for the drinks and want to try also the food because it's the kind of place that I like and next time definitely I'll book a table to not have this kind of experience.:) read more

I love Gilt Bar! When you walk in, you're immediately transported to the 1920s and it's such a unique ambiance. Every detail is in place, from the dim lights to the wallpaper/chairs/sofa to the music to the drink menu, and I didn't feel like I had to yell in order to keep up conversation. The drinks are so good and speakeasy STRONG. I was happy with that and felt like I got my money's worth for the cocktails. Would totally come here for a happy hour - it'd be a good choice. We got two pastas - the truffle bucatini was just ok, lacked more truffle flavor and the sauce was thin and pretty oily. Kind of tasted like buttered noodles. I wouldn't order this again. The star was the vodka rigatoni. Omg - probably one of my top favorite pastas anywhere. Absolutely amazing - slightly spicy, enough sauce, flavorful, pasta wasn't too doughy - I'd come back for this one alone. The service was great and attentive. It's kind of cold in the seating area, just FYI. 5 stars for the unique ambiance and for the amazing drinks and pasta dish I still remember. I'll definitely be back and highly recommend! read more

Amazing customer service. On New Years Eve our party of 3 had a reservation at 8pm. The manager let us know the table before us was taking long to check out and asked if it was okay for us to wait a little longer and brought us champagne. Small gesture but we appreciated the communication, service and were totally fine with waiting a little longer. Food and service were great as well. read more

The ambiance at Gilt Bar was great. It's low-lit and gives off this speakeasy vibe with nice subtle jazzy music in the background. I've been to Gilt Bar a couple times several years ago and I was really looking forward to visiting again. Unfortunately, it was not like I remember. The tartare itself was good, but the bread was so firm I swear it felt like I was wrestling it with my teeth. I think the dish might have been more enjoyable if they had provided better/fresh bread. 2/5. I really wanted to love the burger but it left a bit to be desired. Overall, the flavor profile was pretty good. There was good flavor and the sauce was very tasty. Where it felt short was with the amount of salt that the patties were seasoned with. It was VERY salty and I felt the patties were cooked more than I would have expected for a "smash burger". I also felt the buns were a little "too bready", but outside of that, it wasn't the worst burger I've had. Where I feel disappointed is that it was a $30 burger. It felt like I was catfished. The fries were also just okay. Personally, I would have loved for them to be crunchier. 3/5. Lastly, I ordered a rye old fashioned. I was surprised to get a cocktail with a bunch of ice cubes. Maybe I'm bougie but I expect a good old fashioned to be served in a glass with a single ice cube. The cocktail wasn't well balanced and the ice berg piled inside the glass didn't help either. 1/5. I really wanted to love this place but unfortunately I can't recommend it anymore. I feel the quality has either gone down over the years or I just had a bad batch. Either way, for the price of everything, I have very high expectations. I didn't take a photo of the cocktail because it was not worth remembering. We didn't try dessert because after everything else, I thought "we've seen enough." read more

Gilt Bar has an unmatched atmosphere. It feels very glamorous - perfect for date night or a girl's night out. We did not have reservations, but arrived early, and were able to get a seat at the high top tables. If I were to do it again, I would make a reservation so we could sit in one of the booths away from the front door for a better experience. Our server was really friendly and lovely. He was also working what seemed like every other table in the front of the restaurant, so it was a little hard to get him when we needed him, but that wasn't his fault. Otherwise, he was great. The food here was really good, although the prices were firmly planted on the high side, which is not unusual for this area. A soda, pasta entree, and side of sprouts cost me almost $60. The standout of Gilt Bar is the Library speakeasy downstairs. Even if you can't get a reservation, see if you can peek your head in. Also make sure while you're downstairs to visit the photo booth to take some pictures for $5 as a souvenir. I thought that was a really nice touch. read more

Gilt bar was amazing! The atmosphere is fantastic and the food was phenomenal. I met a friend from out of town who was in the city for a work trip and we spent a few hours catching up over dinner and a few drinks. We never felt rushed or that the waiter was in a hurry to get us moving. I order the chicken Parmesan and it was delicious! Full of flavor and the chicken breading was crisp and crunchy. I sipped on a few tequila sours which were made to perfection! I will definitely be back! read more

One suggestion for management--some of the seats are really deep, which made it a little difficult for someone like me who is average height to comfortably navigate the table. If you're looking for a spot to take you back in time to give those speakeasy vibes, this is the place. It's best to have a reservation because it can fill up quickly. If you want to check out the actual speakeasy downstairs make sure to check in with the host for that too. Unfortunately we weren't super hungry but what we did try was fantastic. Salmon Caesar and ricotta gnocchi - would get again. The server was fine but a little abrasive when answering our questions about The Library, like they were tired of getting asked about it. Also, bring a sweater because they keep it cold in here! read more

This place was certainly packed. We had a reservation, but at 7:30 I heard the waitlist had 49 people on it!! I think it's been quite viral recently but that didn't stop it from being amazing. Erin, our server, was SO phenomenal. I could 100% tell she loved her job and the restaurant. She gave us thoughtful recommendations on drinks, apps, entree and desserts and all of her recs turned out amazing. Love a girl who knows her way around the menu! While in the area with friends we were looking for a place to have a nice dinner and Gilt Bar was suggested by a local friend. Starting with the service. We were seated quickly and checked in on often which is always nice. My cup was never empty and empty plates didnt last long on the table. When it comes to dinner i honestly dont think you can go wrong! Everything we ordered was delicious. As appetizers at the table we had the meatballs, the chopped wedge and the smoked salmon caesar. While everything was good, i could eat those meatballs everyday for dinner! As my entree I had the pappardelle with prosciutto & peas and it was so well balanced and the pasta was cooked perfectly. After so much food I barely had space for dessert but couldnt pass up a scoop of salted caramel ice cream! If you are looking for a good night out, this is it. read more

We had an amazing dinner with delicious drinks. The ambience was very intimate and the service was fantastic. I recommend the meatballs and the cheese sticks as appetizer but just be aware they are very filling. The truffle oil really makes the cheese sticks unique. The pasta was pretty amazing and we shared two different ones including the gnocchi with brown butter and sage as well as the pappardelle with prosciutto and peas. The gnocchi was perfect and the sage complemented it so well. The pappardelle was also delicious and both pastas were so fresh. We had a wonderful experience and also an attentive server. read more

I frequent Gilt for happy hour. Great value, bar tenders outstanding. Tonight my friend Nancy was visiting from JAX FL to celebrate her 90th birthday. She wanted to experience "real Chicago" so I took her to GIlt for dinner. From the host getting us a great table to Katrina being our server. Katrina was sooooo kind and made sure Nancy had a special experience. She was also considerate in communicating w Nancy to insure she could hear and understand her. Katrina even gave Nancy a rose. Stopped in Gilt Bar after having dinner at Bavette's, which is just a few doors down on the corner. Sat at the bar, but really wanted to check out the Library, which I hear is pretty cool, but they were closed. The same owners that own Bavette's own Gilt Bar and you can tell because the decor is very similar with more of a laid back vibe and the food is not as expensive, and also they have some of the same drinks as Bavette's, like the cucumber martini, but it taste nothing like the one at Bavette's. Bavette's was much tastier. I also don't think the bartender used the right vodka. They use their own house vodka in mostly all of their vodka drinks and list this on their menus, but I could of sworn the bartender used Sky Vodka in my martini, which honestly I don't know if out of those two which one is better, but I just like full transparency so if you say you're using your own special house vodka that from what I was told at Bavette's is comparable to Ketel One, don't give me Sky Vodka because that is not comparable to Ketel One, and the reason for the star reduction. Bartender was cool tho outside of that, but what's super cool is downstairs when you go to the bathroom and the entrance to the Library is they have this old school photo booth where people take pictures and they leave them all on the wall. I mean there has to be hundreds of pictures tacked to the wall, such a cool and different thing. We just ordered drinks this time. I do want to come back to experience the food and have a drink in the Library, which I hear is a super cool spot too. read more

Is there a dress code?

No. While most were sharply dressed, there were people in jeans and golf shirts. A few in coats & ties. You might feel uncomfortable in shorts. Very dark interior and unless you are at the bar looking to meet people, I would not worry about it.

The server was educated on the wines was able to walk me through the tasting and pairings but gave me independence and autonomy to enjoy at my own leisure and pace. I highly enjoyed my visit and absolutely will be returning to dine in, as well as to get a winery tour!

We started with some drinks, including two kinds of Negroni. The wild mushroom arancini (5 little balls for $6) were the smallest I've tried, but they were creamy and melt-in-your mouth delicious. The whipped ricotta and jam beautifully served on a strip of toasty focaccia was a unique taste sensation. Prime beef meatballs and short rib sliders on toasted ciabatta bread also hit the spot. Even though we were merely dining at the bar, we enjoyed the overall vibe of the restaurant. There are lots of photos on the walls, interesting lighting from the ceiling, nice serving dishes, and servers who seem to know who their regular diners are.
