We've been coming to Bistro Monadnock since they opened. To address the negative comments, these are unique situations that do not reflect the quality of this restaurant. True, since it has grown, some of the personal touches have waned, but the food & drinks are still amazing. The staff, many of whom have been there since the start are hard working, knowledgeable, and friendly. Shout out to Mitch! Our favorite dishes are the foie gras, French onion soup, steak tartare, and the frisee salad. They always make seasonal changes and it shows. The steak frites are consistent, with 2 options of beef. The cornish hen has been delicious each time we've tried it. Honestly, there's nothing I wouldn't get again. The charcuterie is special and Chef Johnny will tell you the story of the historical, his family owned "slicer". We love BM and recruit as many to visit as we can! read more

The mister and I are fans of French bistro. We stopped by for a weekday lunch to celebrate a special occasion. We shared the following: 1) Escargots - These snails were extremely tender, buttery, and garlicky. There were plenty of baguette to dip the sauce in. If you have an in-person meeting after lunch, you will need a few pieces of gum. 2) Croque Madame is a humble yet fancy sandwich. It was a baguette with mornay, smoked ham, sunny side up egg. There were plenty of beef fat fries to go with it. 3) Moules - These PEI mussels were also extremely buttery and garlicky. It also came with a generous loaf of baguette to soak in the flavorful mussel juices. We would love to revisit and try the steak tartare and happy hour specials. read more

Things started off great for my first visit last night. The restaurant is lovely, with great lighting. Service was great. Ditto the cocktails and the oysters and the escargot--maybe the best escargot I've had. And the beet and blue cheese salad was excellent, too. But two of the three entrees we ordered were almost painfully over salted--the confit leg of the Cornish hen and the entirety of my skate wing. If we hadn't a show to get to immediately after dinner, I would have sent mine back to the kitchen. Instead, I took it to go and will see about eating my leftovers with some unsalted rice and/or lentils, because I hate throwing food away--especially such a large portion. I look forward to updating and raising my rating after a second visit, because I have to believe the kitchen was simply having an off night. read more

We stopped by the Bistro Monadnock, a French restaurant, before catching a show - Their HH specials are a great deal, as they have some good bites offered at the bar. We ordered: +oysters - these were fresh and brine-y +salt cod croquettes - these were forgettable; overcooked and didn't have much flavor; super dried out +and, sliders - these were extremely juicy and delicious; could have just focused on these! The place was very dim-lit, and the seats at the bar was a bit tight and uncomfortable. However, the bartenders and staff were friendly. My goal is to try 50 new Chicago restaurants in 2025! Restaurant: 23/50 Month tried: April Favorite dish: escargots A very solid option if you need dinner in the Loop! I'm almost never in the loop, but we needed a meal before a show and Bistro Monadnock came up with good reviews. The atmosphere is great - huge bar, lots of dark wood and soft lighting, and very French vibes. The menu is definitely a little pricey, but we had good strong cocktails and solid food. The menu has changed since I dined but I had a fish dish with a fennel salad that was cooked very well. I could see this being a great place for cocktails after work for those who work downtown. read more

My sister doesn't want me to write this review because she's afraid this place will become too popular! Walking into the Monadnock building almost feels like time travel; it was built in the 19th century, and the shops inside have preserved that historic feeling. We arrived earlier than our reservation, but were seated promptly anyway. We started with drinks and a baguette, which was up to my French native dad's standards, so we soon polished that off and had to get another! Next up were the salads, we got a Bibb, and a Strawberry & Farro to share among the 6 of us, the latter recommended by our server. She did not steer us wrong; both salads were delightful. Several people in our party ordered the Striped Bass, my younger son got the Dorade Royale, my sister chose the Cornish Hen, and since someone had to do it, I went with Steak Frites. It was cooked perfectly to my medium rare request and came with a massive pile of beef fat fries! I needed help with those, and everyone was happy to dig in; they were amazing. So good that we had to get another side order of frites, especially since my sister had a lot of yummy sauce to scoop up; it was either that or more bread. Everyone enjoyed their fish dishes, too; the Dorade Royale was a good-sized whole fish in a golden sauce and my son soon devoured it all. I certainly didn't have room for dessert, but most of us ordered coffee. However, the young men wanted to try something, so we got a Peach Melba. I ended up trying more than one spoonful. The bathrooms consist of several single-seaters, which is nice. All sparkling, and with the same old-school charm as the rest of the building. The bar has a rather large sculpture behind it, which generated some discussion as to what animal it was. Bull? Mythological creature? Horse? A last minute dinner reservation with a coworker turned into a surprisingly delicious dining experience! Food was spectacular! The escargot was better than the one I had in Paris. The French Onion soups was quite tasty, especially for the cold evening. The steak frites was perfectly cooked to medium rare as requested. Drinks were tasty. My coworker got a Hotty Toddy while I had a St. Germain Spritz (aka Hugo Spritz). Service was great! Very attentive but did not overly check in on us. Zero stars if possible! I got home and woke up in the middle of the night feeling to throw up, in the morning explosive diarrhea! I know it's from their food, it's the only thing I had all day, I was disgusted eating it and how greasy it was but I was super hungry. I had their foaie gras, and let me tell you how disgusting that was. Tooped with chololate pieces and inside it was mixed with white chocolate. Tasted like a dessert but my brain told me otherwise. It came with some toasted bread toasted in a ton of butter on both sides, so greasy. There is nothing French about this but the name. The creme brulee I had afterwards was super thick and overcooked. Yes, to the chef of this restaurant, take a trip to France and sample their foods. The creme brulee is supposed to be smooth and light in texture with a thin layer of softly caramelized sugar not a thick and burned layer like you guys served. I'm sorry but the whole experience was a disaster. Never coming back here again. Listen, this is not about personal taste, it's about overall taste. I have been to France multiple times, all over the country, there is nothing French about this restaurant, it's very American. Eat at your own risk hopefully you won't get sick. read more

Lovely romantic bistro tucked away in the historic Monadnock building in the Loop. The atmosphere is intimate and romantic with soft lighting, well spaced tables, and a comfortable noise level. The menu is traditional French bistro down to the escargot, French onion soup, and steak frites. We started with the soup of the day, a gazpacho that made good use of the fresh summer produce. The steak tartare was excellent - tender, flavorful, and thoroughly enjoyable. The frites were hot, fresh, and crisp. They were served in the traditional cone and came with ketchup and a supremely garlicky aioli. The Parisien gnocchi (don't expect Italian gnocchi) also took advantage of the season's offerings. The sweet corn and concentrated tomatoes were offset by amazing confit garlic and strips of preserved lemon provided well-appreciated pops of acid. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Oh, wow. I had an afternoon for a free lunch to dine by myself. I scoured various Eater Chicago articles, and honestly places were just very far away. I found this one restaurant though, Bistro Monadnock that was pretty close by. It had great reviews, and the food looked pretty good from the photos. The menu looked enticing too. I gave it a go! The restaurant is very charming, as it's located in the historic Monadnock building. It's relaxing, with old school furniture that matches the historic building, and also in an intimate quiet setting, with French Bistro music. Very cute! I ordered the Bistro Burger (brioche, steak, butter, dijonnaise, red onion relish, gruyere, pickle), and WOW OH WOW. I will start that French-style burgers are not typically my favorite, as they're usually just burger meat and cheese, without any tomato or lettuce, etc. BUT this burger at Bistro Monadnock has convinced me that a delicious French-style burger is possible. To start, the burger meat had so much flavor, was juicy, but just the right amount of juices - it wasn't dripping out unfavorably. The brioche bread, which at other restaurants can become soggy quite quickly, did not here - and it was delightful, because the chefs had toasted the brioche just enough to hold up the burger's shape. The cheese was not just cheese, but had capers, which gave it a really nice flavor. I added on the Beef-fat fries for $7 (I'm not happy about having to pay $7 for fries that don't come with a burger automatically, but at least they disclosed this transparently), which was a much needed necessity, and also deliciously so. The service was incredible too. I came in starving, after a 30 min walk in the snow (don't ask). I ordered right away, and my burger came within 7 minutes. A huge win. I'm only in town for a few days, but I think I will be back one more time to try the other exciting looking items (Steak tartare, French onion soup, Banh Mi Club?!, other various lunch sandwiches). I also did not get to try their cocktails - didn't want to get smashed for lunch. I have NO idea why this place isn't packed every single night of the week. We went there on a Saturday for my wife's Bday. We had reservations and got in 30 minutes early. My God was it spectacular. The services was first class. Old school service; not this Applebee's with an attitude service. It started with the host, to the waiter, to the bartender that personally served each cocktail. And the cocktails were on point. Measured. Right ice and glasses. Tremendous. Haven't even got to the food yet. WOW. Perfection. Sublime. My wife had the escargot (which she loves) and I had the Oysters Rockefeller (which I usually do not do). Exceptional for both. Then I had the Scallop special and she had the gnocchi dish. To both I say WOW. I absolutely loved my dish, but her gnocchi (which we both often avoid for some unknown reason) was absolutely incredible. The softest and most flavorful gnocchi (upon a bed of sweet corn based veggies) that I've ever tasted. Forever more, I will rethink gnocchi dishes. Instead of dessert, we finished the night with their signature Sazerac. 100 of 100. The place is down an alley near the the Union League Club of Chicago. Get there. Support them. Wanted to have a quick meal before a show. Arrived early for our reservation. Server passed by after we sat down and said he would be right back. Right back means about 20 minutes. Food took very long to deliver. French onion soup was cold. Burger was average at best and looked like a mess. Two of us finished those dishes before the third entree arrived. Could not find our server to ask for check. Asked other servers who seemed too busy with their own work to help. Did not make our show on time. Called manager a few days later to fill him in. He listened and said he would call back. 10 days went by. Then he dodged phone calls I made. When I reached him he pretended I talked to a different manager. Basically said they are a busy restaurant and we should expect to wait for food and service. Great customer service all around. read more

We've been to numerous French restaurants across various states and of various fanciness, this has to be the worst food I've tasted. The French onion soup was so sour! Using lamb stock was not a good substitute for beef, as whatever they're using has 0 flavor, just color. The sour after taste I think came from the wine. The cheese on top was black and made everything taste horribly burnt. My mother had the cassoulet, and everything but the meat was under cooked. The veggies, the beans, all of it. The sausage and duck paired nicely but the unexpected crispiness of everything else made it a subpar cassoulet. The bread and butter, along with the charcuterie was delightful. Everything paired nicely on the board, and I miss that apricot jam. Wish I could give a better rating, but I don't think I'll be back in Chicago for a long time. read more

They have a nice little lunch menu - I tried the Mushroom Melt sandwich with a side of fries - it was very tasty. I am in Chicago for just a couple of evenings, attending a conference. I ended up at Bistro Monadnock and I'm so happy that I did! I went during happy hour, which was amazing. Three dollar oysters and reasonable drinks. The wines were very high-quality for happy hour. I have an onion allergy and this restaurant was more than responsive in helping me select a dish that I could safely eat. And the food was phenomenal, as well as the service! Bistro Monadnock is located in a building that The Doctor loves called The Monadnock . He wants to rent an office in the building just because, go figure. The restaurant itself is what I refer to as a hidden gem. Located between Dearborn and Federal, I wouldn't say it is on a beaten path of foot traffic and yet it was full on a Friday night. We entered from inside the hallway, so you could see that the restaurant was made up of several store fronts based on the number of doors you could see attached to the restaurant. As we walked into the restaurant, we were greeted by a gentlemen pulling a bottle of wine down from a shelf. The restaurant itself has a lovely vibe and I loved the French music being piped in....discovered several new pieces to add to my Spotify French Cafe Jazz playlist. The bar seemed inviting and there were four individual bathrooms, each as a single serving rooms with some lovely retro tiles...I am assuming that they all have the same tiles. We started with Chicken Liver Parfait (elderflower gelée, pickles, mustards, crostini) and the Steak Tartare (dry-aged beef, farm egg variation, wholegrain mustard). Both of these were very good, however I would get this with the french baguette. The crostinis were good, but too crunchy for me. It's a texture and sound thing for me, not a criticism of the crostinis. The Doctor told that they were very good, but he loves crunchy stuff :-) I ended up taking the chicken liver back to the hotel along with a french baguette to snack on with a nightcap of bubbles. For dinner, we went to the basics: the Bistro Burger (brioche, steak, butter, dijonnaise, red onion relish, gruyere, vargo bros pickle) and my fave, the Croque Madame (baguette, mornay, smoked ham, sunny side up egg). Neither comes with fries, so we got one order to split. No complaints on either dish. For dessert, I got the ile flotation (duck egg white meringue, orange & cardamom creme anglaise, pineapples, candied hazelnuts & salted caramel). This is a wonderfully light dessert and that pineapple was so good as well as those candied hazelnuts. I ate as much as I could, but eventually the sweetness caught up with me. Again, not a criticism of the dessert, but I have a threshold on how much sweetness I can take. I would do this again but need to split with someone as I couldn't finish the whole thing. Having the bubbles to cut the sweetness helped. The Doctor got the Dark Coconut gelato. This was so interesting as the dark part was a dehydrated lime that was dark and grated over the gelato. The taste profile was strange in a good way: you could taste the zest of the lime, but it had an underlying dark flavor that hit my tongue like a cocoa flavor, but not really. Strange but delish. We are definitely going back because I saw the Steak Frites (8 oz prime flat iron and 16 oz prime, dry-aged ribeye). Both look great, but that ribeye was a huge piece of meat on the person's plate next to us. And I would love to try the Bouillabaisse. Because we had a large lunch, we were not trying to overdo it at dinner. Service was very nice. The executive chef actually brought out our appetizers and then stopped over to see how things were going. Everyone was friendly and seemed to be having a good time. There was a song playing and I started dancing in my seat. The gentlemen who initially greeted us coming into the restaurant saw me and started to dance a little as he walked by :-) Definitely want to come back here again. This is a hidden gem. This place should be packed 24/7, but it's in an alley way next to a parking garage, so you'd never know it was there unless you knew to look for it. We started off with soups, then we had some sandwiches and fries. Classic French Onion - $15 - This is the best French onion soup you'll ever taste. The wine has a little sweetness to it, the onions are cooked down perfectly, and there's plenty of melted cheese. 5/5 stars. Clam Chowder was the Soup Du Jour - $13 - I got the large bowl size, because the French are the best at making soups, so I wasn't worried about it. Everything was fantastic. The clams were fresh and delicious, and the most important part, they were cleaned!!! I love seafood, and I can't tell you how many times I get sad when seafood isn't cleaned well. No grit/sand in my clams here! You get some New England crackers to go with it, which is a nice contrast. It doesn't fall apart in your soup either, so feel free to dump a bag in while you eat. I devoured every last drop, and I was a happy camper. 5/5 stars. Croque Madame - $19 - Every ingredient was fantastic. The bread had a good crunch, but it won't hurt the roof of your mouth. The ham is fresh, the mornay cheese wasn't greasy, and the egg was cooked perfectly with some spices on top. This is the best croque madame I've ever tasted. 5/5 stars. Le Rachel - $20 - Homemade pastrami sandwich. The bread was good, the meat wasn't overly salty, and the sauce was plentiful and tasty. 5/5 stars. Frites - $6 - Cooked in beef fat, like how McDonald's used to do. This reminded me of the good old McDonald's days, but done even better than McDonald's. This is a must have dish. The ketchup and the garlic aioli were delicious dipping sauces. The fries were hot and perfectly cooked, nice and thin, and not greasy at all. You couldn't make a more perfect french fry. 5/5 stars. Profiteroles with Dulce De Leche Gelato and Hot Fudge - $13 - C'est parfait! It's perfect! The creme puffs were perfectly cooked with a soft crunch. The gelato was fantastic. The hot fudge sauce has a little alcohol taste to it, but if you eat it with the gelato, then you won't notice it. 5/5 stars. This place needs to be a must try. The server told us that there is usually room on weekdays if we wanted to come back for dinner. We make reservations everywhere we go, but there was plenty of room when we went for lunch on a Wednesday. Which is a travesty, cause this place should have a line out the door. The server was very nice, and even gave us some suggestions of where else we should visit while in town. I didn't know about water taxis, and that we could take a water taxi to different areas of Chicago. Really nice waiter. He made us feel so welcomed. Highly, highly recommend. read more
