My friend rented this out a few weeks ago to celebrate her 45th. It was the perfect spot for about 30 women to mingle, drink cocktails and eat delicious food (compliments of Beaknik). I helped her choose the menu using both Yelp and some help from my bestie chatgpt and came up with the following: 7 Passed Apps: * Mini Truffle Beef Wellington (black truffle aioli) * Short Rib & Brie Slider (Aleppo BBQ, arugula, tomato jam) * Chicken Kebab (harissa-marinated chicken, tahini labneh) * Salmon Taco (avocado, mojo rojo, cilantro) * Mushroom Croquette (black truffle aioli) * Halloumi Skewer (tomato & quince jam, za'atar) * Mini Crab Cake (lemon aioli, herb salad) 1 Stationary Grazing Item: * Mezze Trio (tahini hummus, beet tahini w/ goat cheese, tzatziki, grilled pita & crudité) ---- It ended up being the perfect amount of food- heavy enough to fill us for dinner, but also light enough that we didn't get too full and could stay out late and dance (at the request of the bday gal). They passed the appetizers, but once they passed them around a few times they put them on the bar which became one big grazing station. The drinks were great as well and they even did a signature cocktail in honor of my friend, which was quite strong (hello tequila). The bartender and other staff were super friendly and knew many of us by name after a few hours. He was super accommodating and really chose great wines for us to share that fit the ambiance and the intention of socializing to catch up. Really unpleasant. Despite the 85+ degree weather outside, they thought it a good idea to keep the AC off, the windows open, and light a bunch of candles. To make matters worse, when I tried fanning myself with the paper menu they asked me to stop because that was the only menu they had. I felt like they have an inferiority complex with Beatnik on the River, next door. When I arrived both employees said I must be looking for Beatnik and surely not this place. The seating area is minimal, which is fine because there were barely other patrons. Felt like the employees were mainly just listening to the conversation between me and my friend. Top that off, the wine menu was limited, not very good, and $20 a pop. I left feeling dizzy and ill from the heat and bad wine. Will not be returning. read more

Possibly one of my favorite finds during my time in Chicago. This is a natural wine bar and I must say it was possibly the most aesthetically pleasing / wide variety offering wine bars I have been to yet. Our server was a gem and even made time to speak to me about some of our favorite wine brands/distributors - we talked about some of the best regions and he even allowed me to sample some wines I have never had or heard of. The prices for bottles were very good! Dropped in after having brunch at Beatnik. This is actually in the same space at beatnik behind one of the curtains or you can walk out and walk back in lol. It's a cute vibe in here. Sat at the bar and ordered the espresso martini and my friend had an orange wine. Her wine was yummy and so was my martini. I had a very sweet tooth and was able to order from Beatnik's dessert menu. Stopped in for an after work drink and snack and the space is small, but very pretty inside. The natural wine menu is good, but I wish there were more by the glass options. We had exceptional service and they allowed us to taste before they poured full glasses which was great with unfamiliar wines. We tried four different wines and all were really good. The chicken liver pate was tasty (and they gave us enough bread from the start!) and we also enjoyed the jamon flatbread as well. I wish I could have loved the experience but unfortunately our bartender, Chris, was an absolute creep. The food and drinks were amazing, but he ruined the place for us. He was immediately flirty with one of my friends, which could be fine, but he went way too far in it. She had continued him to make us shots and when he came over he commented on the fact that he could see her "lacy undwear." She attempted to shut down the conversation as it was making her uncomfortable but he doubled down and said that he would love if she took her pants off so he could see them better. We were all astonished and she was very uncomfortable. Even hours later shes talking about how uncomfortable she was and is constantly readjusting her outfit to make sure that her underwear is not showing. She was wearing a very tasteful outfit and was not seeking any attention with what she was wearing. Im incredibly dissapointed in this experience. read more

GoodFunk had been on my list for months, so I was excited when I realized we had some time before another reservation to stop in here for the first time. Most of the seating at GoodFunk is centralized at the bar. I wouldn't recommend this bar for a large group. I think it is better for a date/with one other person or solo. There are a few light food options on the menu, but this place would be more ideal for pre/post dinner drinks. Once we took our seats at the bar, we were immediately welcomed by the bartender. Once we made our wine selections, the bartender let us each try samples of the wine before fully committing to the wine we selected. I've only ever had a handful of orange wines in general, so I took the opportunity to try one of the orange wines from their menu. I really loved the one I picked. We also ordered the steak tartare. The steak tartare was good, but I wished it came with a couple more slices of the bread. It came with 4 small pieces, but we were definitely scooping up the rest of the tartare with a fork. After my husband had his first one, he ordered an old fashioned. I also tried a sip of his old fashioned and really enjoyed it. I consider myself pretty well versed in wine, whether it be a perfectly chilled glass of Rose on a summer rooftop or a full-bodied Cabernet to counter winter's chill. I know what I like and am always thrilled to make a new discovery. I had high hopes for GoodFunk wine bar. While it is easy to get behind the concept -- small-production wines at an accessible price point -- I found that for me personally the execution fell flat. I came into the experience expecting an establishment more on par with Bin 36 wine bar/restaurant (once a Marina City stalwart that is now sadly closed) that featured a casual tasting room format and offered more than 50 wines by the glass. The menu of wines by the glass was relatively edited, almost to the point of being stinting. There were only about 4 white wines by the glass to choose from and 5 reds on my visit. Perhaps my experience would have been different had I opted for a wine flight, but I did not feel up for going that route on this visit, especially with the wine flight clocking in at $38 for three three-oz. pours and $58 for five three-oz. pours. Now, I don't mind spending for a stellar glass or bottle of wine, but this pricing seemed more in line with a seated dinner, not an ostensible casual tasting at the bar. The white wine I ordered (after sampling one that was frankly "art-opening" wine) was nothing that blew me out of the water. From an aesthetic perspective, the rickety candles in holders, with estate sale dishware accenting the space was a puzzling design choice. One wrong move with my elbow and the fire department would have to be called. The music was fairly high volume, at least on my visit, making it hard to carry on a conversation. I'm a wine enthusiast and am all for making it less stuffy and more approachable but sadly my experience here missed the mark. With so many excellent wine bars (Bar Ramone, Pops for Champagne, and Enolo are just a few that come to mind), as well as places in this area to get one's after-work drink on cheaply if that's your jam, it is with reservation that I recommend GoodFunk. read more

So so glad I discovered this hidden gem!! I am always wanting more cute wine bars in Chicago and this is certainly not one to miss. We started with a glass of red, which the bartender was great at recommending. Then, we got the white flight which the bartender customized for each of us! My favorite was a white that smelled and almost tasted like movie theater popcorn (sounds crazy but so good!). There was also a super unique white wine that tasted like an IPA! For food, we started with the salmon crudo. It was absolutely delicious. Some of the best smoked salmon I've had. We also tried the cheese board. The fruits and jam were not the best but the cheeses were great. My favorite cheese actually happened to be a cheddar from Wisconsin. I've come to GoodFunk a decent number of times, and it's always a great experience. Coming here was my first exposure to natural wines, and they're a fun change of pace from my usual varietals. The food menu recently changed including three different small bites which I tried at my most recent visit (all three were delicious!) and an updated cheese board that had an amazing sheep's milk brie. I wish I was coming here with better things to say. The good: the ambiance was great. The decor was inspired and creative with curious touches here and there that showcased this spot's personality. The not so good: strangely, the wine. For a spot that is focused on wine, I thought the wines we tasted fell flat. I ordered a Grenache that was over-chilled for some reason. It's possible that I don't have an affinity for natural wines, so I recommend you try it and figure out for yourself. Also not so good: the food took a little too long to come out.
