We came to this area based on some other Yelp reviews and the other place was closed even though yelp said it was open. So sad. This place was 2 of 4 nearby and it called to me. Was craving red sauced pasta but also wanted to try carbonara...so we each tried one. I got the carbonara and it was delicious! ! Soup: egg and parmesean soup.,was delicious. Spinach and broccoli. Mmm to die. Was so full from the apps i couldnt drink my wine or finish my entree. The waiter was very nice, next time I would love to try a pizza here.

My hubby and I were headed up the street from Gioia Mia Pisciapiano and the restaurant was closed. So, we turned around and saw a small line waiting outside Gioia and said let's try it. I'm so glad we did. I tried a fat noodle pasta with duck sauce. It was really good and super filling. It was a tight squeeze for guests but they made room were they could and just kept packing people in. I liked the lively atmosphere and the service was good considering how many people were there. The location is great and it's just fun to walk around Rome and find wonderful places to eat like this. It would have been nice to have had a reservation, but I'm glad we waited and enjoyed our time there.

Maybe the best quality pasta I've ever had, and delicious tiramisu. I had the "Pappardelle alla Gran Duca (A winder kind of fettuccine with ham, mushrooms, cream, tomatoes, and cognac)" at the recommendation of the owner and was very pleased.

Definitely on our list for one of our favourite restaurants in Rome so far. Quite hidden away in the side street but very near to all the attractions which was handy. The themed decor was a bit quirky and lively with the neon adverts and imitation washing line of baby clothes dangling across a window at the back. Very cute and a bit magical. Service was efficient and smiley. We were their first customers that day for lunch which made us nervous at first entering such a big empty restaurant but it got busier as rush hour hit. Straciatella romana (Eggs and Parmesan cooked in broth) Sadly it was a negative start and the only disappointing dish in the entire meal being quite salty. But it was a soothing and simple soup to appreciate and the bits of bouncy floating scrambled eggs was a very new texture to experience against a clear broth. It came with a few cut up flat bread that did help to take some of the saltiness away. Still it wasn't a dish I particularly enjoyed or would order again. Antipasto vegetable We had a lot of grilled vegetables in our trip in Rome yet this still managed to wow us. It was truly amazing being so much more than grilled vegetables but really well flavoured with herbs, with stuffed mushrooms and peppers too. Everything was seasoned to perfection, tender soft and delicious. Even the presentation was beautiful with the array of bright colours on the dish. Pappardelle alla Gran Duca Pasta cannot get better than this. It was the thinnest and freshest pasta I've had in Rome. The wide pieces of pappardelle slip straight into my mouth, velvety, cooked al dente and the tomato based cream was lovely and light. It came with thin slices of mushrooms adding complexity to the flavour and texture. Ossobucco This was sublime and a very generous portion! So much flavour seeping to the very bone of the veal. The meat was tooth tender, juicy and the lovely tomato sauce gave it umami and a nice zing. Mushrooms gave it an alternative texture as well as adding a lovely earthiness to the flavour. Delicious. Pizza Napoli. Pizza cannot get thinner than this. The base was almost like two poppadoms sealed together. It came fresh and piping hot so the cheese can be enjoyed at its stretchiest state. The anchovies gave a hit of saltiness that lingered enough to flavour the whole pizza. I loved Gioia Mia and wished I could have returned to try their other dishes and their desserts. Everything was cooked with passion, full of flavour with portions that will leave you full across two meals. We couldn't even handle desserts. The atmosphere itself is just lovely and relaxing. Highly recommend it.

We were a group of 18. Most of the group are Italians from Long Island. We immediately fell in love with this restaurant and the staff. The food was authentic, the staff was friendly and very accommodating. We actually went back numerous times during our stay in Rome. One of the NY paisans actually stood up in the middle of the restaurant after taking a bite of his dinner and kissed our waiter. If you are in Italy and want to experience Italian cuisine and immerse yourself in the culture this is the place. I recommend the Bistecca di Manzo alla Pizzaillo.

Probably closer to 3.5 stars, the food was okay. My daughter loved the spaghetti, the rest of my party gave it the 'its ok' review. I had the spaghetti alla carbonara, very dry. The waiter kept adding appetizer, which of course weren't free. Stuffed mushroom was good. Overall the food was on the salty side.

After pointing out the "mistakes" they made (in more than one area of the bill) total costs dropped by 8 euros!

Oh Yelp, why didn't I listen to your 1 star reviews?! After our front desk guy was unable to make reservations at another restaurant up the street, he highly recommended Gioia Mia to us. We were skeptical. We Yelped it and he said "check tripadvisor instead" so we quickly glanced and saw it had solid reviews. "Why not?" we thought! When in Rome, do as the Romans do, right? WRONG!! Unless you are local and/or can speak Italian, I'm pretty sure they will try to SCAM you (that or the locals don't check their bill?) It might be a euro here or a euro there but they definitely try!! No doubt the locals love the food and the loud ambience and the slow ambling service. Our server/host was probably the youngest Italian guy working there (prob in his 50s). He was very friendly (always trying to upsell) but he'd spend 10 min schmoozing at each table after taking your order, 10 min to go drop of your order, and while walking back with your order (another 5-10 min) he'd continue schmoozing to the point that I began worrying about the amount of saliva that was accumulating on my plate with all his talking over it. Want some saliva sauced spaghetti? Yum... To add injury to insult, when we asked for the bill (which took 20 min to arrive), they made more than one "mistake"! We ordered a medium wine (6 euro) and they tried to charge us 12. We ordered 2 pastas (the most expensive pastas on the menu were all 8.50) which should amount to 17 euro... but somehow, that equaled 18 (the old guy in the back writing up the bills has clearly been doing this jobs for eons so doubtful it was just a mathematical mistake). I can accept the 3 euro "cover charge" for the two of us, along with the 2 euro water charge and the 10% service charge but overcharging us for menu items (where prices are clearly written) is down right dishonest. We don't mind paying the actual costs of our meal (build it into the price of the menu) but these unscrupulous tactics are shady! Please Yelpers, don't make the same mistake as we did and listen to the warnings!!

Hungry after seeing the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, etc., my son and I followed my traveling foodie creed: 1. don't follow the buses or hordes of tourists; 2. find a well-lit, non-residential street or alley a few blocks away 3. follow your nose even it the food aromas are unusual; 4. observe where locals are going to eat locally popular, freshly made, seasonal food; 5. run, don't walk, from establishments with menus pushing American food or written entirely in the English language, unless that's what you want to eat at a premium price; 6. don't blindly follow Yelp or TripAdvisor reviews or paid ads; 7. smile and be courteous to the establishment's staff, then go for it, and eat something out of your comfort zone. While the rest of our tour group waited in lines to pay inflated prices for soggy, microwave-heated pizza (or worse, McDonald's), my son and I walked a few blocks away from the Trevi Fountain and saw the sign for Gioia Mia Pisciapiano. Let's have lunch there. Everyone there spoke only Italian. But, the cook and owner were friendly, burly men, who looked like they could cook (and eat and drink) well. Never trust a skinny cook. The menu was my offal-adoring tastebuds' dream. Kidneys. Liver. Brain. Tripe. Our food was simple, clean-tasting, not overly salted or sauced or seasoned, and utterly delicious with the freshly baked bread and a couple of cold beers. We tipped very generously, because the experience was so good and authentic. We made friends with the cook and owner. We hope to return to Rome and Gioia Mia, soon. Meanwhile, sadly, an e-mail-distracted man in our tour group had his wallet and passport stolen by a pickpocket while eating at a tourist-frequented pizza joint on the Via Del Tritone.

    Shahar T.

Incredible pasta, cosy location, friendly staff, huge menu with a lot of options (although lacks in first dishes) but don't miss it if you're in Rome. Especially good was the Gioia dish, and the asparagus one.

Our hotel manager had suggested another restaurant, but I was apprehensive to try, but did later, more on that restaurant review in it's own post. I rather did what I should have done throughout the trip to, which is to search google for local reviews. This tactic I found to be much better than to trust American reviews for restaurants to visit from Youtube or even here, just because the American touristy taste tends to favor bland or Olive Garden style pseudo Italian. The real Italian taste is much different and something one needs to develop. I was familiar with European Italian food, as I had said before in other reviews that Mexico has better Italian food outside of Italy. Additionally, the good restaurants here in Italy do not open before 7 PM. If it does or if someone that looks foreign to Italy is outside trying to lure you in, it's a tourist restaurant with iffy flavor. At this restaurant my husband had the Lobster pasta and I had the spinach/ricotta ravioli, and we both were beyond satisfied. We also had the artichoke as an appetizer, and trusted the waiter with his suggestion for a bottle of wine. He must have been some genius because the wine went well with our meal. The ambience was cozy and very family oriented, however, the rain outside made it romantic for us. Another key point for this restaurant and it traditional flare was that they brought out the olive oil and red vinegar for our salad and of course olive oil for our wonderful home-made bread. I'm so glad we chose this place for those of us Americans who understand culinary cuisine.

Unfortunately, it ended up being one of the most disappointing meals of our trip to Rome. I want to start by saying the staff was wonderful--everyone was incredibly kind, welcoming, and attentive. We have absolutely no complaints about the service. The food, however, was very underwhelming. The Margherita pizza was undercooked, with dough that was still soft and not fully baked. The chicken dish tasted more like a simple stew and lacked flavor, and the lasagna was just average. Another red flag was that all of our food arrived within about five minutes of ordering, which made it seem like everything had been pre-made rather than freshly prepared. We rarely leave negative reviews, especially when the staff is so friendly, but we chose this restaurant specifically because of its exceptional reviews. Being new to Rome, and having walked 20k steps on our first day, there are an abundance of options a for dining. We wanted something classically Rome nearby to our hotel. The Yelp review of this restaurant was sufficiently positive to entice us. Being American, we appreciate the earlier-than-customary dining options. We arrived at 6pm without a reservation. We were seated immediately. The restaurant is intimate and very well staffed. The wood fire oven is front-and-center and the fresh mozzarella is prominent in display. We ordered a bottle of wine ... all options are very fairly priced. This is nice. We started with a Greek salad to share. It was unlike any American Greek salad ... and a really delight. It is early June but the tomatoes and peppers were ripe and crisp and really fresh. My wife ordered the Marguerite pizza; I opted for the Gorgonzola pizza (the effusive review on Yelp was compelling). Both were solid. We appreciate the thin crust and the crisp edged. The center of both, however, was doughy and somewhat undercooked. Looking around ... the restaurant was over 50% full even at this early hour. Most were Americans. We saw a good number of diners with pasta dishes ... and none were left unfinished. Sadly, we don't have any comparisons to weigh (yet). So, I cannot affirm any "best of" citations, it this is certainly a solid trattoria/pizzeria. The staff are attentive and the food served hot and fresh.
