Been here three times already in three days, and I've only been in Rome for three days.
Anyways, the procedure was slightly confusing to me, but I figured it out.
You pay first at the counter and get your "ticket", which you then bring to the gelato scoopers who will take it and ask you for the flavor. For three slaps of gelato it costs 3,50€, that is the "medio" or medium sized cone/cup.
The guys behind the counter just use the large spatula spoons and slap on the gelato. It was really interesting to me to see how the gelato just stuck to other flavors so easily.
Some flavors that stood out to me:
Cherry was a bland flavor, did not really care for it. It is not as vibrant as the cherries you would find the US, and is not as artificial as I would have liked it.
Orange was a unique flavor. In each scoop there are small bits that give the flavor texture.
The lemon was also pretty good, and was very tangy and tasted like frozen lemonade.
Oreo cookies flavor was subpar. It was not really an Oreo flavor, and was lacking overall.
Strawberry tasted pretty genuine, just like the real thing. Not too artificial, made right.
You can ask for heavy whipped cream, which they will slap on top too. Do not be fooled into thinking it is the lightest cream you have ever tasted, it is heavy and might taste funny.
Comments on the cones:
The cone was the most lackluster part of the entire experience. The cone is too small for the ice cream on top, and encourages sticky gelato to drip onto your hands below. The cone is also too soft, and is not covered with chocolate all the way. Could easily be spiced up a little with some more chocolate coating/nuts and widened at the top. read more
