Grant is a great piano teacher. We are glad that he still teach in cupertino since it's much closer to our house. He is very easy to communicate with and flexible to accomodate my request on my son's lesson plan. He often organized get together events for all his students and families which we enjoy very much. It is such a good way to meet other families that share the same passion like us. I also like that he has a few recitals scheduled in a year. In fact, we just had our Holiday Recital at Santa Clara University Recital Hall. It's a great venue and my son had an amazing experience performed on the stage. Bay Area has no shortage of piano teachers, full time or part time. However, Grant stood out with unique pedagogy that is tailored towards individual student's level and goal. He also has a vibrant body of adult students, which is quite unusual among regular piano teachers. I started my lessons 3 months ago. Prior to this, I took general group classes at university and later learned by myself. Grant gave me an assessment lesson for free. And based on the assessment, he devised a five-point lesson plan: music theory, basic techniques, PianoMarvel (a learning/practicing application on computer), classical pieces and BYO (bring your own) pieces. So far, the plan has executed pretty well. I felt I have gain so much progress since my lessons with him. I am basically coming from a STEM background and I am really interested the mathematical principles behind music theories. Grant wasn't shy from my questions outside the textbook. He didn't just tell me to remember things when I asked the "whys" behind. We had great discussions. My favorite moments were when we analyzed particular pieces of movie music and tried to figure out why they were so fitting to the scene where it was in. Grant would often challenge me to describe the movie storyline and figure out what some music structures symbolize given the scenes. There were quite a few "aha" moments and as a result, my understanding and hence the appreciation of music and the story it was written for have gone up a major step! Besides regular classes, Grant also has group classes for adults, which I drop by from time to time. He also organizes community events like playing piano at SJC airport, adult student hangout party, not to mention the recitals! But the last ending song was the Waltz Of The Flowers which was my favorite for its a beautiful melody and a tune I know of. The vibrant melody sparked a dancing spirit within me. I have been attending Grant's (GK Piano) weekly adult group class for a few months now. Like many, I played the piano as a child, quit, tried to pick it up a few times without much success but finally made the commitment to try again (with regular lessons and practices) about a year and a half ago after I moved to San Jose. My main goal for joining Grant's class initially was to get opportunities to play in front of a small group of people to overcome or at least to manage the terrible performance anxieties. The class is a perfect setting for that regardless of one's level with its informal and supportive atmosphere. However, it is much more than that as Grant makes it fun and informative with his enthusiasm and love of music as well as insightful comments and feedback on whatever one chooses to play. He also organizes 'field trips' for the students to experience different performance venues (such as the San Jose airport). Participation in any of these including the adults only recitals is optional of course but it is very helpful and encouraging to meet others who share the interest in the piano music and who might also be working through similar issues such as performance jitters. My 13-year-old, who has been playing piano since age 7, started taking lessons from Grant a little over a year ago, and it's been a great experience. Grant strikes the perfect balance between setting high standards/challenging him, and keeping piano fun. He is very flexible, mixing classical pieces with jazz and popular music. As a result, my son enjoys playing Grieg and Star Wars in equal measure. Grant is always upbeat and enthusiastic, and he communicates well with his students and their parents. Grant's class is awesome! I just started about 6 months ago after a ten year hiatus after ten years of studying as a kid.
