I went to GlamSity to get a sew in as part of a Mayvenn hair promotion. I was paired up with Monique who was exceptionally kind and responsive with setting an appointment. The problem I had was the job she did on my hair. The braids were extremely loose and not laid down correctly. The technique she used to braid my hair didn't have a pattern and looked and felt like she just sewed the braid to one side of my head. Yes one side. This caused the weave to look super lumpy and crooked. Although I didnt pay for this sew in because it promotion from Mayvenn hair where if you buy 3 bundles you get to get paired with a hairstylist to do a sew in, I feel as though the company should closely choose their stylist because the job i received wasn't from someone who had 7+ years in braiding experience. It was terrible and had to take it out the next day. She also didn't leave enough hair out around the crown of my head so the tracks were extremely visible aside from my whole head looking lumpy. I would never go back even if it was free a second time. Let alone pay 250$ which is Monique's sew in price. read more

The atmosphere was extremely comfortable with KBLX on the radio...Everyone I encountered was very friendly and there wasn't a lot of loud talking, just beauticians working hard on beautiful hair! Additionally, the location is great-- right next to a couple restaurants and across the street from a paid parking lot. I would definitely love to get my hair done here again Review for the stylist: I saw Charita for a sew-in weave with leave out in the front, and let me say that this may be the best weave I have ever had! She took about 3 hours and sewed the flattest most undetectable weave my head has ever experienced. I am able to put it up in a ponytail part down the middle or on the side...Charita is super sweet and accommodating AND knows what she is doing. I moved to the East Bay from Chicago last summer, and I've been dragging my feet with finding a new hair stylist, because I've had bad experiences in the past. Its always hard to find a good hair place. I found GlamSity on Yelp and it had great reviews (plus it's in a convenient location!) so I decided to give them a try. I tried out their online booking system and I was delighted that they had a Saturday morning opening for the next week. I haven't had a Saturday hair appointment in years - they usually book up months in advance! So I was excited. I booked online and received a confirmation text. I showed up on time for my appointment Saturday morning, but unfortunately they did not have my appointment in their system! :( However, everyone there was super nice and friendly, and one of their stylists (Tamar) took care of me right away, which I am super appreciative for. Tamar is amazing! She asked good questions to get a sense of what I typically do with my hair. She applied a relaxer touch-up, gave me a relaxing wash, and then styled my hair perfectly. I told her I wanted loose curls and she gave me beautiful, beach-y, wavy curls that I LOVED! I got so many compliments that day. So African-American ladies-this one's for you. I just moved from MA where I had found a go-to salon that did my relaxer, touch-up, perm, whatever we all call them (hopefully using all those buzz words will get you to this review and not something about soothing music or whatever!) Anyway, I was struggling to find somewhere that wasn't super expensive and wasn't incredibly sketchy or unprofessional. This place is GORGEOUS-it is painted a beautiful blue color, which if you can imagine is quite soothing when your scalp is getting chemicaled! (Although I left with not one burn!-which is crazy for me since I have a sensitive scalp.) Anyway, I called SAME DAY and got an appointment within 2 hours of my call with the amazing owner of the salon -Blu. She looked at my hair and was honest and explained to me the do's and don'ts and praised me for what I was doing well-which is a really refreshing departure for me. She uses a line of products that were new to me but were incredibly effective and did not cause me any discomfort-which is saying a lot for a relaxer. There were a lot of steps of protein reconstruction, conditioning, deep conditioning (which made me nervous I was going to be slapped with added charges-I was not, which was GREAT.) She was very caring and talkative, but worked quietly and politely when I didn't talk too, which was nice. The salon has a great staff of very professional and polite women that really care for you from the moment you walk in (free coffee and tea people!!!) At another salon-I recently got my hair "trimmed"-and by that a hairdresser whose known me since i was little didn't listen to me when I said I'm growing my hair long and chopped 2 solid inches off. So I told Blu this and she was VERY KIND and FLEXIBLE about how much she trimmed. She gave me a BEAUTIFUL TRIM with fantastic shape, even though she didn't have to. At the end she only charged my $80 for a relaxer, blowout, trim, and flat-iron (like 3 months of growth ladies) and no more! Also the salon is incredibly close to the 19th street Bart station and through a scenic and upscale part of Oakland, which is good for small women like me walking alone. My weekly experience is way passed the 5 stars allowed. I have been going to Glamsity for over 2 years now and I love it. The staff is extremely professional and helpful whether or not you are their client. The "manager" is a gem. Alicia is sooooo professional and pays great attention to detail(s). Blu (my stylist/owner) is an expert of her craft. She is like a mad scientist in the lab when she creates a new cut or design. I really was hesitant about writing a comment on yelp, as I want Glamsity all to myself. Anyway, I am sharing. I called around and Glam Sity was able to squeeze me in. Tamar did a great job with my hair...she knew how to twist and style and best of all: SHE LISTENS. I got exactly what I asked for and she knew to do things without my having to ask. My hair looks fabulous and the price was RIGHT. I have had the good pleasure of having Charita as my stylist for the last 1 1/2 years. I affectionately call her the "Weave Queen". She is excellent at braiding and sewing in extensions. She can replicate any style from merely looking at a picture. Her weaves are virtually undetectable and I constantly carry her business cards to hand out because women are always asking me, "who styles my hair and are they taking clients?". Additionally, she does an excellent job at actually caring for my natural chemical free hair which has grown at least 8 inches since she started taking care of it. Charita is always kind and funny, but most importantly she is a professional who is fantastic at what she does. She is always willing to accomodate your schedule and spends time making sure that you are more then satisfied with your service. A basic one stop shop in beauty and there aren't too many of those for women of color. Everyone here is nice, friendly and helpful. I drive all the way from San Jose, but it is worth it. So when it comes to hair i'm not one to experiment much because i'm very self conscience- which is why I was afraid to venture out to another stylist. But i realized I needed a change and had to find someone that understands my hair. After reading several reviews on GlamSity and looking at their website I booked an appointment and crossed my fingers. I arrived a bit early for my appointment and immediately felt the warmth. I met my stylist - Tamar and waited as she worked on another customer. My first thought was, hmm my appointment is at 11 and its 10:50am now. The customer she's working on isn't close to being done so of course i thought i'm going to be here for a long time. But at 11am she took me to the back for a shampoo and I explained the issues with my hair. Throughout my shampoo Tamar told me to relax because she would take good care of me. Ahh, music to my ears. She left me with a conditioner for about 10min or so, washed it out and blew my hair out. Now time for the test.... Can Tamar make a picky customer who came in feeling lousy about herself happy? Absolutely! Tamar not only had me leaving her chair with hair that moved but she provided me with great confidence to match. Will I be back? You betcha! I have been loyally getting my hair styled by Charita for about 2 or 3 years now and she is the BEST!!! She is kind, accommodating, professional and just a joy to be around. My hair was damaged by a different salon, and I went to GlamSity for help. I am one of those people that has no clue when it comes to hair care. I was assigned to Tamar, and she was wonderful. First of all, she explained everything to me, and second of all, even though my hair had to be cut due to the other salon, she gave me a cut that was very cute. Thirdly, since getting my hair done is a way of relaxing and self-care, the atmosphere is one of the things that is important to me. The shop had a wonderful look with soothing, wonderful music playing, as opposed to loud daytime TV shows and little angels running around and screaming. I think overall Tamar is nice, but I wouldn't recommend her for a weave. Looking at these reviews again, it seems that she's better with natural or relaxed hair. I had her do 3 weaves for me, and each time, the tracks would come out after a week and continue to need to be resewn in. When I tried to go back to her to fix the tracks, she would keep me waiting for 2-3 hours for something that takes 10 mins. So I resorted to just sewing her tracks back in myself. The last time she did my hair, it was falling out so badly that she had to completely redo the whole thing. It takes her about 5 or 6 hours to sew in a weave and she will keep you waiting while she works on other customers, without an apology. It's hard to find hairdressers so I tried to stick it out, all the while resewing hair back in myself, but now I'm just finding someone else. read more

I made an appointment with Kameelah after seeing her "$175.00 internet special" for a sew in weave. When I called her, we made an 11:00 appointment for the following week. Since I live about 90 miles from the salon, I left my home at 9:30 to give myself enough time to get there on time. I was both suprised and disappointed when I received a call from her stating that she was running late. (She said about 30 minutes) Since there was nothing I could do about it, I dealt with it. I was even more upset when I walked into the shop at 11:30 to find her still working on another client and I had to wait an additional 45 minutes before I was able to get in the chair. As soon as I got in the chair, she asked me if we had already discussed a price. I reminded her of our conversation a few days prior about her internet special. She said "Yes, $175.00 for the sew in and an additional $30.00 to cut it!" My mouth dropped open! There had never been any talk about any additional fee for cutting and I had NEVER heard of a stylist charging a seperate fee for cutting a weave that they put in! At this point I was stuck so I agreed to pay the additional charge. Now when I showed up to the salon, my hair was washed, conditioned, and dry. All I needed her to do was braid it, sew it and cut it. She stated to me during our telephone conversation and while I was in the chair that her specialty was braiding so I thought that I would be in and out fairly quickly. Boy, was I wrong! It took her over 45 min to do the braid! (Usually only takes 15-20 minutes.) She also took the time to finally tell me she was 4 weeks out of school! I felt like that's the kind of thing you tell someone up front, but it became apparent after being in there for 6 hours before she told me that she could not cut my hair the way I wanted (an A-line bob) and that after another stylist finished with her client, she would do the actual hair cut! All in all, I was there for 7 hours and was not at all happy with what I left looking like. I felt cheated and angry! I feel that with time, Kameelah could be a good stylist, but that I should have been informed of her lack of experience before she made the appointment. She should have also divulged the hidden haircut fee, and she DEFINITELY needs to manage her time a little better. Needless to say, I will not be back which is a shame. I moved from Florida about a year and a half ago and have been searching for a good hair dresser. I bought the $32 Groupon in October for a shampoo, deep conditioner, and blow dry and I am so glad I did. I have natural hair and I've learned the hard way every stylist can not manage it- regardless of their ethnicity. My appointment was wish Sharell and she did a great job. I asked for a trim and I got a trim- not a hair cut, like some other scissor happy stylists I have been too. She straightened and feathered out my hair and it looked gorgeous. I've been to Sharell 3 times now and she is consistent. Most recently I got a full sew-in and I have gotten so many compliments, it looks really natural and so far no problems. read more

Yesterday I had to go rescue my sister from this salon. She asked for blonde hair and got ORANGE. Bright, carrot-colored orange. It was horrible. Mya did not even use foil. She had her in the chair from 9AM-2PM. My sister asked for 1 inch off the bottom and she left her with an uneven cut with several inches of different lengths. Mya even recognized how horrible it was and gave my sister her money back without so much as a second thought. We went to another salon to have it evaluated and they were appalled with the shape her hair was in. I just moved from the East Coast and I now live in San Francisco, and let me tell you it is very hard to find a beauty salon that caters to those lets just say with "African American texture." I googled and yelped until my eyes hurt when I came across the Glamsity listing. I visited their website and decided to give them a try. My hair is cut really short but I needed it to be trimmed back up into shape. I spoke with Blue, the owner on the phone and when I cam e into the shop she was there, on time and ready to go. (Definite plus) And I even went on a Saturday afternoon and there was no crucial wait. Blue whipped my hair back into shape and did everything I asked. I am a very pleased customer and I plan to be a loyal one. The atmosphere of the location is very quiet, the inside of the store is classy and upscale. There was honestly nothing to complain about.
