Leslie is amazing and takes the time to listen and provide her expertise. She was very patient and kind when I explained what kind of hair cut I was looking to get and explained what would be better for my hair type (fine/thin hair). She goes above and beyond to connect with her clients and remember things about them. On top of that the salon itself is very clean and they play fun and upbeat music. Men come here. I know, because I've seen them through the window. And I am one and I go. But I'll admit that with the resurgence of manly barber shops that give you whisky and are a pretty cool aesthetic trip in a time machine I had gotten into a barber habit and a shop named 17 Jewels was different than that. It didn't feel like they'd have either whisky or time travel. But after the complications of the last few years and my prior go-to moving away I was all why not. So what if they don't have whisky. They look inviting and I've seen men in the window so I shall give it a try. I've had the pleasure to have been shorn by three practitioners in this libation-free space. And while they were all super I'm a one stylist man. I had to choose. I chose Jamie. Pretty much almost the best choice I've ever made ever in my life. I'm sure I've made others but when I'm in her chair I can't possibly recall what these might have been. So. Men. Put a flask in your car so you can have a sip after she makes you look a whole lot better than you did when you walked in that door. That way it will feel like what we used to be used to. And after a few visits the whisky will be forgotten, as this will be a visit you look forward to for all the other reasons. Five stars, Jamie. You're awesome. read more

My biggest complaint is that for most of my life I could just get a haircut with no notice, but like everything that is good, I now have to actually plan a few days in advance at 18 Jewels. Kieu is so great! I've seen her 4 times so far and am happy every time. She is nice, fun, and skillful, and she does a great job with my thick hair. She also gives the best head massage when she washes my hair- I would get my hair cut all the time just for the head massage! I hadn't seen her in over a year because of covid, but I went back yesterday and felt very safe. The salon is large and keeps the doors open, and she was double masked. Leslie is amazing! I requested for a hair style typically usually not suited for curly hair, and she was able to make it happen and make it look amazing both natural and styled. I loved that she explained all of her decisions and then left some wiggle room- she also always asked for my opinion and input. Super friendly, great conversations, and it was a lovely quiet Sunday afternoon. Very reasonable hair cutting costs for the Bay Area as it can go 100+ in the surrounding area. She did not disappoint, not even in one sitting. I'm telling you my hair is black black, so bleaching it is always a scare. In addition, the nail tech Nii was available for dip powders so I was able to get my nails done during the wait on my hair. I love my hair and my nails, this will be my go to forever. I've been going to Jamie for cuts and color for about 2 years, and she kills it every time. She gives fantastic consultations, and always tries to suss out exactly what I want and explains the process to me beforehand. If I ask for something that isn't a good fit or won't achieve the look she knows I'm going for, Jamie will always talk through the process and give me recommendations. I completely trust her, and have never been disappointed with any of her suggestions. Jamie is incredibly professional and cares so much about making her clients look and feel their best. I have very long hair (and a lot of it), and she always builds in extra time to cut and color it. She never recommends unnecessary processes or products that won't add to the color or style, and does thoughtful extras (like automatically adding Olaplex to color) to keep her clients' hair healthy. I get highlights/lowlights from Jamie and have gone from varying shades of bright to dirty blonde (and different types of longer cuts). I like to keep my hair pretty natural looking and low maintenance, and Jamie always ensures I walk out with hair that can withstand months of growth and still look fresh. She is fantastic at cutting my long, wavy hair in a way that accentuates my natural texture, so I always have the option of styling it or air drying with little or no work/product, and her cuts grow out perfectly. Jamie's prices are incredibly reasonable, and she's given me better cuts/color than I've gotten from stylists at significantly higher prices. And she really is a gem of a person in general - incredibly sweet and thoughtful, easy to talk to, and a beautiful soul.
