Except for the slow service, and excellent dining experience. Good food, great view of the river and great ambience from another area. This Inn dates back to the very early 1800's. One market said 1807and another said 1837. Checking online, 1815 looks like the most likely date. This was originally a stagecoach stop which make sense. It's at the end of navigable water and as far up a river traffic could go. Above was the interior of what was the Virginia. It was said that one of the original owners was the Grandson of one of the Declaration of Independence signers. It's an Inn with a full service restaurant that is open to the public. You can dine with a great view of the Kanawha Falls. We did not have reservations so had to wait a bit to be seated. While we waited, we talked to another local couple. He was from the Hawk's Nest Area (Ansted WV) and she was from the Babcock area. They dated in HS and later went separate ways but eventually met and married. From them we found out that Bridge Day had been cancelled because of Covid so our big detour was unnecessary. Nice menu. I ended up with a Mushroom Swiss Burger and Peanut Butter Pie. My companion had French Onion Soup and an amazing Grilled Porkchop. Took forever but we were part of the problem. They only serve one course at a time and the Soup Course gets served first and the Main Course does not get served till the Soup Course is over. Same with the Desert Course. Does not get served till the Main Course is over. Still there were lapses in service and in more than one case, had to flag down the server to get something else like a beverage refill. Still very nice and would definitely do it again and next time, may even stay at the end to cut down on driving so much in one day. read more

Was seated by the windows by the river quickly. Server brought amazing rolls as we waited for our order. I had the ribeye which you could cut some of with a fork and I did not need the a1 that she brought to us. The mashed potatoes were nothing special but was good. The green beans isn't my cup of tea, but my wife loved them. She said her Reuben was excellent. I had PB Pie and she had the coconut cream pie that we both shared and they were amazing. I can't pick which one was better. The waitress filled our drinks twice and was always polite and thorough even with waiting on multiple tables. We will return. read more

This historical inn was absolutely fantastic. The staff was very kind and friendly, and the service was excellent. Each room is filled with antiques that will take you on a trip to the past. Staying at the Glen Ferris Inn is like stepping back into the 1800s. Many popular presidents have stayed here, and the history is quite fascinating. The restaurant is decorated beautifully, and the food tastes wonderful. It is the type of food that will make you feel like you are at Grandma's house. The musty odor in the lobby and room were almost unbearable. The exterior of the Inn is falling apart, needs so much repair. The food was marginal at best. The ac in the room is so close to the bed that it was freezing on that side. You couldn't turn it down because of the odor. read more

I would not recommend the Glen Ferris Inn. I was given the "newly renovated" room and it was awful. There was mold around the AC unit, the bathroom was dirty and there was mold in the tub/shower. The mattress was cheap and uncomfortable. The furniture was old and worn...the chairs in were old outside wicker chairs that still had dirt and rust on the feet. What looked "newly renovated" were the windows and maybe the carpet. To make matters worse, the toilet overflowed and I had to use the public bathroom every time I needed to go. It wasn't very nice having to leave my room in PJs to use the facilities. They should tell you to bring your own towels. Their towels are the worst quality possible and look like they are 30 years old. The outside of the Inn was dilapidated and in some areas, falling apart. The food at the restaurant was the only good thing about the Inn. It was good ole country food. Great cook. Although the food was good, I would never go back. This place may be a landmark but it needs some help. read more

We stopped at this quaint looking inn and restaurant for lunch. They have a nice open dining room that overlooks the water. I ordered the hamburger and fries. The fries are an additional cost side item. My wife ordered the Philly cheese steak sandwich and rings. Upon receiving our meals I immediately noticed my French fries were cold. Not warm, cold. My wife's sandwich looked dry and unappealing. She tried to eat it but it was just inedible. We presented our concerns to our server. She was apologetic and offered alternative options. My wife declined and sent back her uneaten meal, instead opting for a piece of pie that was good. When we were given the total of our bill. It included the meal we sent back. The waitress said because my wife had taken a bite of the sandwich they couldn't take it off the bill. She relented and deducted the sandwich. I would not return. read more

This review is for my weekend stay at the Glen Ferris Inn as we attended a wedding held there. Quaint is certainly a word I would use to describe the the place. Nice enough but it has seen better days. Gorgeous location with beautiful river views. My room was comfortable as were the two rooms of my in-laws'. I was lucky enough to get a room on the river side. They were on the front, which had a great deal of traffic noise due to its proximity to Route 60. Inside the rooms, there are touches of paint that need attention here and there. Bits of mold (bathroom) here and there. Crappy towels. At least there was plenty of hot water! SIL told me housekeeping did not even bother to make her bed even though they did clean her bathroom and change her towels. But they remembered to leave a tip envelope. The meal we ate in the restaurant was breakfast. Stick to the more traditional offerings, like eggs and bacon, and you'll be happier. On to the event... There is a special events room with a deck that overlooks the river. This is where the wedding reception was to be held. But well after the wedding event was booked, GFI informed Stepdaughter the deck was no longer available for her wedding event due to "safety concerns". If it were me, I would be negotiating for a chunk of my facility rental back if I could no longer use the deck for whatever reason. The food served for the reception was typical banquet food. It was perfectly fine but nothing particularly memorable about it, unfortunately. I will not bore you with what all we went through just to make our reservations. But it took multiple phone calls, emails and even a visit in person to sort it all out. GFI also might want to consider updating their website. Their site uses a Java plug-in that is not supported by any current browser. One other thing that would be nice would be wi-fi. The area has spotty cell phone coverage because of the mountainous terrain. Wi-fi would not that hard or expensive to install and make available to guests, who would appreciate it greatly. read more

my wife and I stayed at the Inn overnight. rather disappointing. I'd heard great reviews and almost nothing lived up to them. I understand about the lack of modern conveniences in an historic inn but no soap in the room was a bit overboard. We also had dinner in the restaurant. Again, there had been rave reviews that did not materialize. We both ordered steaks, she a sirloin and I a ribeye. Mine was cold and tough. I left half because I just got tired of chewing. Hers was pink even though she had ordered well done. The bright spot was our server who was attentive and personable. The dinner rolls were great as was the side salad. But that isn't enough to bring me back. The three stars was for the rolls and our server. Otherwise one star would have been over rating. read more

We love unique, historic places, and the view of the river is incredible while dining. Location, location, location! We passed by on a Sunday, and we're surprised that they were open due to the hours posted on Yelp. We noticed people in the dining room and decided to give it a try. They have a limited "Sunday specials" menu with 6-7 entree choices & desserts. Prices were reasonable and meals came with warm rolls which is "old school supper club". I ordered the meatloaf dinner and my husband had the chicken & dumplings. My meatloaf was cold and the roasted potatoes were a little overcooked but both had great flavor. The server was very apologetic and had the meatloaf heated up. The chicken and dumplings were also cold, but my hubby was too hungry and just ate it. Today's visit was not our first. On previous visits, this restaurant deserved only a 3 star rating. Read that many improvements have taken place under the new ownership. Today's visit was a 5 star experience. Firstly, the dinning area has been spruced up. Service was excellent. A good choice of menu items. Price point is very good. Is it possible to go lower? I took my mother and 6 others here for dinner, as she loved the show they do, and it was a real treat for her to go - unfortunately, the food was below par (instant mashed potatoes with canned gravy, for instance), the service was amateurish at best, and the owners indifferent. We were all really looking forward to going, and unfortunately, should have just kept this on the unchecked side of our bucket list - we won't be back, that's for sure. (Note - I tipped the staff 20% out of pity, and we didn't send anything back or ask for refunds on items that were simply inedible or that never made it to the table, but I wanted to do this review as a public service to anyone else planning a trip here - might as well go to Bob Evans or Cracker Barrel - at least you'll already have your expectations lowered when you walk in) read more

We ventured out to The Historic Glen Ferris Inn for Mother's Day with the family. We had reservations for 2pm and were seated around 2:15, which wasn't bad; no complaints there. Service was slow, but they were packed and our waitress was doing her best to keep up. I want to preface with that, it was obvious she was doing her best and I am not complaining about her specifically. She was sweet and pleasant. Drinks took over 10 mins and food took another 45 mins or so to come out which would have been fine, had it been even warm. Everything was room temperature/cold, and I mean everything. I've never experienced a situation were 8 people ordered several different dishes and they were all nearly cold. The sides, and the mains. Weird. Now, I'll say this, everything had a good flavor. The only thing not seasoned well was the dumplings, but that was an easy fix with some salt. Two of our entrees (both turkey) were missed and took another 10 mins to come out, and you guessed it....room temperature. They ran out of over half of the desserts by the time we ordered, but the hot fudge cake was a hit. The peanut butter pie wasn't well set up, but had a decent pb flavor to it. Apple cobbler was actually cake with apples on top. When our waitress asked if everything was good, we said yes, but there was a temperature issue. She was apologetic even though it wasn't her fault, and came back to tell us they were taking 25% off the bill. Once the bill came, there was no discount, but we paid anyway becuase we ate the food, and it was good.....just kinda cold. We also tipped the 30% suggested on the receipt. We didn't ask to talk to mgmt as they had already been told by our waitress, and hadn't come out to talk to us then. We'll try them again on a normal night to give them the benefit of the doubt, but definitely not on an special occasion day. Overall, a disappointment but with lots of potential. read more

Had dinner with my wife and son and his wife. My wife and I split the lasagna. It was excellent and we could barely finish it. My son and his wife both had the 8 ounce ribeyes but they were closer to 12-15 ounces. They were huge. It was a great meal. And the service was superb. Upon arrival I was skeptical about staying! I read how short staffed the establishment is! The staff that is there was absolutely amazing from check in to check out 2 days later. The hospitality the employee show here is better than most larger hotel chains. Any requests I asked, it was taken care of! I would absolutely stay here again! At the present time, you are not going to find an upscale establishment but you are going to find clean, welcoming atmosphere with great staff! .J.J was absolutely amazing and deserves a raise and promotion! She was doing everything on check out day with a smile from checking out, phones, taking orders, serving breakfast, cleaning tables! She did it so effortlessly! So, my first review was taken off . . . This is a beautiful inn, with a friendly and attentive staff, however, if you have been here before, like me (2017, early 2018) you will be disappointed! The website said it had breakfast, and on my last two visits, there was made to order brunch in there on site restaurant. Not any more. Even though the restaurant kitchen remained, they only had a sparse continental breakfast--cold danish, cereal and a broken toaster. The coffee was not even a Keurig. There is little other options in this quaint little town, and it was $140/night. You can do better, 15 miles down the road, like in Fayetteville. The Inn is still romantic, but visit, don't stay there, unless the new owner decides to treat the guests to a wholesome country visit. Try Mountain Quest in Marlington, WV. For the same price, you will be very happy, eat well and be able to hike and relax in a hot tub and spend time in an incredible library. Tighten up, Glen Ferris. We were finally sat in a frigid dining room with a window unit set to ARCTIC. Made reservations about 4 months before going. Ordered 2 bed waterfall view, got there, and they had me down for 1 bed with a view of the street! Couldn't change it because it was Bridge Day weekend, so sucked it up and got a rollaway bed. The rollaway was better then the actual bed. Carpet looked like it hadn't been vacuumed in about a month. Housekeeping brought an extra blanket for the rollaway bed and said "sorry it has stains, but that's all we have". No fridge or coffee pot in the room, and a small tv from the 90's. You have to hold the toilet handle when you flush because otherwise it won't go down. Wanted to have dinner there, but it was a 2 hour wait for a table. Several people were walking out, one guy said he had to send his steak back 3 times. Went back the next morning for breakfast, it was no one there, and it was delicious. The waitress (Jenny) was really nice. This place was cool because of its historical significance, but that's about all they have going for them. They jacked up the prices recently due to a new owner, but nothing has changed. read more

Greetings, My girlfriend and I recently visited the Glen Ferris Inn, for the second time (a little more than one year after our first visit). We had lots of choices, but enjoyed this quaint hotel in the past, which had a great breakfast at the onsite restaurant, and its beautiful river views, and especially going to the nearby Kanawha Falls. We were very disappointed to learn that Glen Ferris no longer serves made-to-order breakfasts, and only has a marginal continental selection (a few danish, cold cereal, muffins, and juice). The coffee wasn't even fresh, and there were no healthy options (e.g., eggs, dairly free options, or any low-carb choices). This was a sad reality for us. The dining room was still roomy, but it was empty, because of the poor selections. Like others, we went elsewhere, for breakfast and checked out. Worse, the room also had missing tiles in the bathtub, and a toilet that did not flush properly (the valve kept getting stuck -- a sad reality, a replacement part is less than $10). For $150/night, I expected more. Bottom line, the competition is cheaper, and in better shape in Fayetteville. Although Glen Ferris has a beautiful location, there is not much of a reason to choose to stay at Glen Ferris Inn, in my humble opinion. You can visit the grounds, and walk along the river, and visit the nearby bridge and park, but a better value is less than 15 miles away. Just saying, Tim Willson read more

We booked as a matter of convenience to attend a funeral. It was such a pleasant surprise that it's turned into a romantic getaway also. We were fortunate to have the dining area to ourselves, which was a bonus that it was open later for dinner on a weeknight. The place has great history, is an eclectic group of great bones, odd additions, former owners belongings, and really nicely kept grounds and clean rooms. Service in the dining area by Carly was friendly and prompt. Jennifer behind the desk greeted us happily and has been a real pleasure, professional and so helpful. We recommend this venue as a weekend getaway or would be great for small private party. Once the main rooms are done to period or in a consistent palette and style you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else comparable. I love the quaint mansion and many comfy seating areas on lawns and porches, views of the river and the feeling of a giant bed and breakfast where you're with friends but alone also. It's hard to know where to start with this place. The rooms were clean, at least, but the pillows were as flat as I've ever seen, and the bedding was more than worn. The shower was ridiculous - I couldn't get it adjusted to the right temperature to save my life. The food in the restaurant is OK but nothing fancy at all, but at least it's cheap. If you have to stay local to this area, I would recommend getting the suite on the third floor, which has three bedrooms and a sitting room, and that was far nicer than our room on the first floor. It was secluded and would be perfect for a family traveling together. I would have preferred Hawk's Nest State Park hotel over this. Rather than stay here, I'd recommend just staying in Charleston if you can. It's not that far. read more

My wife and I were intrigued with the history and location and wanted to spend the night and eat. Service poor ,room smelled bad, many more negatives than I will list. Red flags went up when I order the prime rib and was asked if I wanted steak sauce. When it came I was not even sure it was meat. It was well done and completely dry. If you have high expectations of accommodations and are looking for cuisine, you might want to move along down the road. It is recently been purchased and undergoing the slow process of being restored. Our room had fresh paint and new carpet as well as fresh new linens and a wonderful mattress. That was all I needed to love this place and will return in the future to see the progress. We did eat in the dining room twice and were satisfied with price and food. If nothing else have one off their great deserts with coffee and try to see it as it was 200 years ago. read more

The Glen Ferris Inn was a wonderful place to stay. The staff was wonderful as well. They treat you like family. We had the mountain view room. It was lovely except for one problem. Some construction company across the street has a trashy parking lot. Beautiful town with beautiful scenery and you've got this construction company trashing up the place...cement mixer, piping, buckets, etc. That kind of stuff makes a town look run down and affects the nice places too like the inn. Of course this is not the Inn's fault by any means and I would stay there again. But shame on that company. Make your reservation. You'll love hearing the falls. read more

Menu items have changed since last visit and prices have tripled. Most every thing is itemized. Not the same Glenn Ferris we knew and loved. With $15 for a burger and fries, $4.50 per vegetable, $2.50 for one roll and $3 for a cup of coffee the prices are outrageous. read more

New managment in 2012, and dramatic improvements. New carpet, overall update of facilities: a few cabinet knobs still missing, but nice. New chef, and both dinner and breakfast were excellent and reasonably priced. (Free wifi in the lobby.) I have no complaints about the linens, pillows, or shower-- our room was fine. I like the state park, but like the Inn better. From some rooms you can see the magnificant "river" (looks like a lake) behind the Inn, and from some rooms you can see the falls. Aside from the scenery and polite servers this place is horrible. My prime rib was microwaved and so tough it was inedible, the manager told me "you don't know how you want your steak cooked, because this is medium rare." The steak was brown yet somehow raw throughout--very strange-- no pink or red whatsoever. The flavors were bland to nonexistent, it tasted as if they had boiled a random piece of beef in the microwave and called it prime rib. When the manager stormed off they brought me some roasted pork loin which actually looked very appetizing and I was excited, sadly it was SO dry and I'm not saying a tad, but so dry that it was hard to swallow without water. I ended up not eating dinner, and paying for an appetizer and drink. The server was much more responsible and caring than the manager was, she should have been in charge. I think this restaurant needs new cooks, or a lesson on how to prepare food. I love the area, the view, and the atmosphere of the place but something needs changed about their menu and execution of services. read more

My friend's was inedible (Cajun Pasta) mine a big thick rubbery half circle of over-processed ham grilled with sugar, tasteless potatoes au gratin and canned green beans. The room we were in was huge and freezing. Waitress young, pleasant and untrained. Rolls were home made, huge and puffy..way too big but when hot tasted yeasty and ok. That was it. Hidden gem in a picturesque setting. We stopped in for lunch and were not disappointed. Had local favorites of hotdog with chili and slaw and homemade potato chips and onion rings. Deserts were homemade too. Beautiful view of the falls nearby. read more
