    Glen Ferris Inn falling apart

I would not recommend the Glen Ferris Inn. I was given the "newly renovated" room and it was awful. There was mold around the AC unit, the bathroom was dirty and there was mold in the tub/shower. The mattress was cheap and uncomfortable. The furniture was old and worn...the chairs in were old outside wicker chairs that still had dirt and rust on the feet. What looked "newly renovated" were the windows and maybe the carpet. To make matters worse, the toilet overflowed and I had to use the public bathroom every time I needed to go. It wasn't very nice having to leave my room in PJs to use the facilities. They should tell you to bring your own towels. Their towels are the worst quality possible and look like they are 30 years old. The outside of the Inn was dilapidated and in some areas, falling apart. The food at the restaurant was the only good thing about the Inn. It was good ole country food. Great cook. Although the food was good, I would never go back. This place may be a landmark but it needs some help.

Great Inn to stay at, beautiful inside displaying the history. Large dining area, with grest waitresses. View the Kanawha River as well as the Kanawha Falls while eating.

This review is for my weekend stay at the Glen Ferris Inn as we attended a wedding held there. Quaint is certainly a word I would use to describe the the place. Nice enough but it has seen better days. Gorgeous location with beautiful river views. My room was comfortable as were the two rooms of my in-laws'. I was lucky enough to get a room on the river side. They were on the front, which had a great deal of traffic noise due to its proximity to Route 60. Inside the rooms, there are touches of paint that need attention here and there. Bits of mold (bathroom) here and there. Crappy towels. At least there was plenty of hot water! SIL told me housekeeping did not even bother to make her bed even though they did clean her bathroom and change her towels. But they remembered to leave a tip envelope. The meal we ate in the restaurant was breakfast. Stick to the more traditional offerings, like eggs and bacon, and you'll be happier. On to the event... There is a special events room with a deck that overlooks the river. This is where the wedding reception was to be held. But well after the wedding event was booked, GFI informed Stepdaughter the deck was no longer available for her wedding event due to "safety concerns". If it were me, I would be negotiating for a chunk of my facility rental back if I could no longer use the deck for whatever reason. The food served for the reception was typical banquet food. It was perfectly fine but nothing particularly memorable about it, unfortunately. I will not bore you with what all we went through just to make our reservations. But it took multiple phone calls, emails and even a visit in person to sort it all out. GFI also might want to consider updating their website. Their site uses a Java plug-in that is not supported by any current browser. One other thing that would be nice would be wi-fi. The area has spotty cell phone coverage because of the mountainous terrain. Wi-fi would not that hard or expensive to install and make available to guests, who would appreciate it greatly.

Enjoyed a very good meal and a beautiful view here. Great service also. Homemade rolls were like Mom's.

After spending all day on the lake, we checked in at 6:30 PM only to find out they only accept credit cards, unless you're Canadian, then they accept debit. Thankfully, we had an emergency credit card, or we wouldn't have been able to stay in the room we booked. The lady behind the counter, Laura, was extremely unhelpful. She told us, "I don't know what to tell you, it's your cards that are bad." Another staff member mentioned there was a glitch with some of the credit machines, which is why our debit cards wouldn't work. Despite having our card on file, they refused to accept cash and even had an ATM right behind me. When we finally got our keys, we discovered they put us in a king suite, which is a single room with a king bed and a couch, not the one-bedroom we had booked. When I returned to the front desk, I told the young man that was there that I was put into the wrong room. Laura made sure to come out as soon as she saw me from the back. Laura said that the NEW owners took our room for themselves and that the GM told her to still charge us the one bedroom rate, which was $50 more than the room we received. I requested to switch to a two-queen room, which was $110 compared to $190, but Laura insisted she would have to charge my card again. As a line of people started forming behind me, I pulled up the hotel's website to show the rate for the king suite. Laura reluctantly agreed to discount the rate to $161 after taking my phone from me and looking at the days inn web site, but only after I insisted. She then said, "I don't think anything I do will make you happy, why don't I just check you out?" I told her what would make me happy is to be fair and give me the rate for the room I was put in and not try to upcharge me because the owners took my room. She rolled her eyes, "I will just give you the $161 rate." in a rude clipped tone. I said thank you I appreciate that. After asking for a receipt, she initially refused, stating they only give receipts at checkout. When I asked to take a picture of the computer screen with the new rate, she finally provided a room registration with the discounted rate and made sure to circle the new rate in red marker giving it to me with a scowl on her face. This experience was incredibly frustrating, especially since I visit this hotel regularly for lake boating trips and have never had such issues before. Laura was very rude and unprofessional. I strongly advise staying away from this hotel. Wish I could give 0 stars but unfortunately you have to give at least one.

Currently (July 2018), there is construction going on in a lot beside the hotel. I assume that more businesses will be built so that the hotel will not be the only business up on this hill. We were only in the area for one night, so I cannot speak to the evening social. I'm sure it was some kind of fabulous for someone that partook in it. Anyway, my hotel room was decent and clean. I have no complaints. I've stayed in crappier establishments. My room was a one bedroom that included a kitchen. The next morning, my coworker and I decided to eat breakfast at the hotel. It saves time when you have a 5 hour drive ahead of you. That morning, they were serving scrambled eggs, pork and turkey sausage, and all of the other usuals (pastries, oatmeal, waffles, bagels and bread). I ate oatmeal, a small pastry and had some eggs. It wasn't the best, only fuel for the morning. You cannot expect much from a hotel buffet. If we had to work in the area again, we may choose this hotel. It was decent and we experienced no issues during our short stay.
