This is one of the hardest things you'll have to do that Vista Del Mar actually makes easy. Before I get into the details, the key names you need to know are Rebecca the Top organizer with a heart of Gold, Sidonia who does the intake and works insurance magic, Juanita who is the incredible eyes and ears and also facilitates memory care, Jenny, Jessica, Charmaine, Patrick the Events Coordinator and so many more. These are my new, additional family and I love them dearly! I anticipated the process as being uncomfortable and purely money oriented. First of all, they have their rates on their website unlike so many others. They have their fees listed too. No surprises. We don't need that during this time with our parents. So that was a welcomed and very important sign. I toured a bunch of places in Long Beach. When walking in, you can feel the vibe, the energy etc and once I walked into Vista Del Mar, right through those doors, I KNEW this was it. There was upbeat music playing, not all stuffy or silly stuff. I've seen places that tend to infantilize their residents and this music was straight up pumping! The residents were moving to it even in the foyer! Theres always a fresh flower arrangement and right when you walk in it's bright and you can see the beautiful outside courtyard. It has gazebos for shade, beautiful landscaping and access to the other parts of the facility. I can't even call it a facility even though it has 247 healthcare and workers. I guess I'd call it my dad and sisters apartment with new family and friends. In the short time my dad and sister have been there, they have a whole new family who care for them. In turn, this has freed up a lot of my time and worry to get my own life things done. I know they're safe, I know they have medical care and medication. But I also know they are mentally stimulated by the non-stop calendar of events every single day. Painting, field trips, socials, happy hours, trivia, bingo, movie parties with snacks! As I write this, I can do anything with my day off today and it feels GREAT. But I actually want to hang out over there today, haha. The dining room is absolutely gorgeous. You seat yourself or they assist, and it's like a restaurant. You can dine there too with them if you want! The lovely ladies who work the dining hall have so much patience. They bring the meals and make sure everyone is taken care of and is satisfied. They can also make other meals if you don't like what's being served on that day. They also accommodate special diets. They really pay attention and I'm so thankful for that! There's a snack shack off the main hallway, free laundry room with washer and dryer, a hair salon open 3x a week, 3 places to watch movies and tv, the theatre has beautiful luxury easy chairs, and is still close to watchful eyes of the staff. This place feels like Home. It actually feels more like home than when before my mom passed. It feels like Hope. I don't know what I did to be so lucky to have found Vista Del Mar. It's within budget and clean and happy feeling and bright and entertaining. I mean, this should be the STANDARD all care facilities should have! You know I could go on so if anyone reading has any questions, just message me and I'll be happy to answer honestly. So now, I'll get ready and head over to their luxury apartment as I call it and talk to them about what they've painted or crafted, which new friends they've met and get some fun chit chat going with the staff that never seems overworked or rushed. I would strongly advise anyone considering this place for a loved one to look elsewhere. The Memory Care/Locked Unit: The "care" in the locked unit was non-existent. The staff--mostly teenagers--were huddled together on their phones, completely ignoring the residents. The smell of soiled clothing was overwhelming, suggesting residents are left for long periods without changes. Even more alarming, I saw residents with scaly skin, bruising, and marks on their arms that looked like they had been roughly handled or restrained against their will. One gentleman was in the hallway crying to go home, and no one even looked up from their screens to comfort him. Professional Misconduct: When I asked for a floor supervisor to address the lack of staff in the assisted living area, a woman eventually appeared from a storage closet with a male, adjusting her clothes in a very unprofessional manner. It turned out she was the supervisor for the unit. The lack of supervision and basic professional ethics is appalling. Management: The Executive Director comes across as very "fake." Based on my visit, it seems management is focused on appearances and salary rather than the actual safety and dignity of the seniors living there. They are permitting an environment where neglect is the standard. This is not a safe environment for the elderly. I am in the process of reporting my observations to the proper authorities (Social Services and the Ombudsman) because no one should have to live in these conditions.

I went to see my father, was not told by anyone of the outbreak and business is being conducted as usual. I knocked on the door, to speak with the Executive Director, Joel. He ignored the knocks, kept sitting in his office and walked out when it was time for him to go home. I asked him did he answer the door. He acted like he couldn't hear me. Then said, "Sometimes, if I'm available!" I told him that I went in to see my father, was informed that I should have been told that I should wear a mask and gloves, he said "Yeah, and!" I told him, "You can walk away, I'm going higher!" He looked at me, looked at the receptionist, Marie and said "I gotta go!" Then left. The unit 5 area is not being, quarantined, residents do not have on masks, proper PPE is not in place, ventilation is not covered, and they are not doing anything the health department advised them to do. I waited for the health department to call me back, they advised Brittany House again, as of 5:00 pm. Over 2 hours later, nothing has changed. Some Alzheimer's patients regress when ill, this place is horrible! Joel, the Executive Director, is rude, incompetent, has no people skills, and he needs to be fired immediately! Updated: 24 hours later! The management has lied publicly and everyone needs to know. I personally spoke with the health department. I personally sat and waited for the Brittany House staff to put signs on the doors. I personally watched a staff member put signs on two of the entry doors at 5:30 PM. After Joel's incompetent, disrespectful, and uncaring self left at 5:00. After, ignoring my knocks on his door as I sat for 2 hours waiting for the health department to get back to me. I personally walked in 24 HOURS after the outbreak and no PROTECTION FOR RESIDENTS OR STAFF WAS IN PLACE! I filed a report with Brittany House (They're hiding this!), the Long Beach Health Department, the California Social Services Department, and a review here on Yelp (I joined to make this public.) I am my father's POA, I have not been contacted by Brittany House (phone nor email), this outbreak was 24 hours before my visit! It's been 72 hours! Visitors, workers, residents, and outside care providers are in and out daily. It's clear, this Joel guy has permission to do what he's doing. He's protected at the cost of over 100 venerable dementia patients, family that have very little choice. If I were on the top management of this company, he would not have reported to work today. He would be on an immediately administrative leave pending investigation with staff and residents. OR He would have been terminated IMMEDIATELY! Thank you for letting Brittany House! They are extremely competent, which is vital for providing appropriate medical care and responding to health needs. 5. Social worker support: Having a dedicated social worker on staff is incredibly beneficial (Cheryl is a rockstar and truly cares!). She has assisted us with navigating resources, providing emotional support to our family, and helped us with the adjustments of community living. Long Beach, CA., when the nurse is waiting at front lobby, the first thing the HR ask is to apply for a permanent nurse position, which is emphasized throughout orientation by not just HR, IT, D.O.N as well, so when new hired nurse gives no response to be a permanent nurse with Harborview the team of nurses sabotages the new hired nurse to get fired; by the way UNI PAY is over $10.00 to $15.00 higher than Harborview. (1) False Hope is Fraud, (2) Deceitful and Misleading, only to sabotage nurse for permanent lower pay. UNI should to straight forward with the nurse's and open with Harborview searching hire permanent nurse staff for lower pay. Harborview has a strange way of attempting only to hire a nurse an extremely strange way to have to new nurse fired due to being brainwashed by a nurse recruiter UNI that pays higher hourly then only to discover during Harborview orientation that the nurse's only purpose for being there is in hopes to have a new permanent nurse, which is fraud, discietful, misleading by both UNI and Harborview. This can cause a lawsuit by many nurse's against UNI and Harborview. Plus Harborview is a ghetto place to work, and does not hire white nurse's only nurse's of other race and color; Harborview is not culturally diverse. I work for many travel nurse and local nurse agencies for 30 years and I never came across a nurse agency like UNI and Harborview, especially UNI, THIS IS A BUG NO NO. It is obvious that Harborview and UNI are in this scam together because Harborview conducts nurse orientation every 2 weeks. Do Not work for UNI, Never. The recruiter Leysia is a lier.
