Five years of investigative journalism curiosity, and concern exercised at four different senior living places from fall 2019 until now, gave me the incentive to move into one with a shining"star" award in Senior living. what a relief to move away from that which is fraught with negative negligent and inexcusable behavior directed toward our most precious assets: our seniors. U.S. Senior living offerings are pandemic with misbehavior directed toward our elder humanity, which often has the effect of nullifying their existence . I was privy to NIC meetings, and I taped extensive meetings where investors clarified the meaning of what senior living really is , simply "real estate" with a steady stream, guaranteed by the inflow of walking talking gullible seniors and outflow of their bodies to whatever place they have prearranged their final disposition, if they have even done that! So I escaped senior living and fled to downtown Phoenix where I reinvented myself as JK Emerson Smith, my nom de plum, lived in a 24 story, high-rise, surrounded by ASU students and young professionals for almost a year and a half? While living there I was infused with their energy and vigor..... I felt desperate to never ever again live around "old people" and then what do you know? I landed on a 40 acre piece of property that feels like it was transported directly from heaven: a nonprofit, basically resident/volunteer run, operating with a likeness to an HOA called the GCA, and is not dependent upon squeezing every dime out of every Senior on limited to moderate incomes. In addition, this campus is staffed, with what I can only call caring, dedicated individuals, infused with the deepest desire to support, help, care about and look out for their senior residents. While I'm not easily impressed, I am not easily fooled..... except for not realizing that Senior living communities have a habit of over-promising and Under-delivering. One example might be the promise of "three chef prepared meals daily", while failing to explain the chef works at Stouffer's! Here where I live the Casitas are cozy representatives of the individual taste and style of the residents living within, and thankfully not the type of exterior that resembles a mental institution or prison. If you see a Community, which displays repetitious likenesses, for example, gravel instead of grass, no flowers, simply a sterile atmosphere and appearance, take note immediately and run like hell! I can almost guarantee that what you see on the outside is indicative of how leadership will act internally; that's institutional, thinking and I no longer live in an institution. I found a home ! Indeed, a home that respects my prior experience enough to give me a TV talk show weekly to interview the residents on the campus here so everyone can meet their neighbors and have the opportunity to present their previous skill sets, accomplishments, and successes, as well as perhaps talk a little bit about the failures that led to them being successes . When I vetted those NIC meetings, never once did I hear anyone mention concern for the quality of life of a senior resident. Pay attention when analyzing where you think you want to live . If the leadership decides that they want to turn everything into a low maintenance residential institutional type epicenter that simply caters to the famous revolving door of seniors with wallets, run the other way!! If you decide to run my way, you can appear on "Stories from the Porch", or better yet Google that title and add JK to your Google search and have a look at the stories told by the residents who live here and how they differ from the smiling artificial seniors in the ads for other senior living "facilities".... partially because this isn't a facility. This is your home! in closing, I can only tell you that I love my housekeeper. She spends an hour here paying attention to how clean things are. I love the food the choice of restaurants on the campus I love the staff in the fact that no matter what kind of a problem I may face I don't have to face it alone because there's someone here on this campus that I can talk to . You have the rest of your life ahead of you. Make sure you spend every single day wisely! You are now a human ATM machine in the eyes of the FOR-PROFIT "retirement industry" and don't give anyone your pin number.!! Furthermore, (and because when I say "closing" I'm never really close to closing) lose the title "Senior citizen" and when you move here I'll award you a V-POW badge....."veteran, vintage or valuable person of worth". Just move in and ask for JK. Everyone knows what the term "bang for the buck" means and you'll be shocked at clearly you'll come to understand that phrase when you do business with a nonprofit. read more

I moved my husband with late stage dementia into Glencroft in January of 2025. It seemed to be a good fit. I won't speak on the issues he had, but only general things that I witnessed at the facility. Under staffing, a problem at most facilities, is also an issue here. Some of the staff truly cared but seemed to be very overworked and couldn't do for residents what I believe they would like to have done. Others were there for the paycheck. Things that really bothered me: nobody helped get hands washed before meals; there was a pitcher of water sitting out for residents, but most days there were no cups, and most of the residents were incapable of getting it or knowing they needed to drink which is so critical in preventing UTI's in dementia patients. The cups for meals only held about 5 ounces of liquid and no one offered refills. Hubby's underwear was not changed daily. Washcloths never seemed to be used; it didn't appear personal care was taken care of; his personal care items were in a locked drawer, but never seemed to be used including his shampoo and body lotion. The food was edible, but barely. I witnessed the woman in charge arguing with a dementia patient. But my biggest complaint is the lack of activities or things to do for the residents. There was one TV with several comfy chairs for well over 20 residents, but nothing else. They were left to wander or sit and stare. I visited 5-6 days a week and engaged him in water painting, playing ball and cards while he could, but that's not enough for someone suffering with this awful disease. I tried arranging for volunteers to go to entertain the residents, but though the facility said it would be nice, they made it next to impossible for volunteers to go. My hubby acted out and was kicked out after 2 months but I'm not surprised. I would act out too if left in those conditions. Perhaps Glencroft is good for independent living, but not for memory care. read more

They feed the residents garbage. Tiny portions and poor quality food. Worse than literal prison food. The definition of putting profit over people. Their emergency call buttons don't work half the time when the residents press them. It is a known issue. I have reported it multiple times, but nothing changes. My parents are too old to put up with the stress of moving to a new place, so they're stuck. If you care about your loved ones, find a different place. If anything changes, I will gladly retract/change my review. read more

I've not lived at any other senior community, but I believe this is the friendliest, kindest and most inclusive place you will find - and that is what I rated it on. Everyone will smile, wave or say, "Hi," to you when you go by. (Of course, I "prime the pump" by doing one of those things first!) My mom gave 30 day notice returned keys before her final move out date.. We left it cleaner then on move in. They charged the next month rent and then some. Trying to contact someone about this extreamly urgent matter is rediculas. We keep hearing "that's not my department". No actual contact numbers for the Supposed people we need to speak with. This amount other issues. Many residents think they are in charge of how things are ran. Policies not followed. Undercooked food. First of all, let me state that we are five year residents of Glencroft. Therefore, we know of what we speak! It is a wonderful, albeit not a perfect place. It is impossible to be perfect place for at least two reasons. 1. It is run by people, and there has been only one perfect person ever. 2. Everyone's idea of perfection is different. This large campus covers one city block, and is nicely landscaped. Not the most important aspect, but quite nice to have. The food here is quite good with excellent variety. The activities department is beyond belief! We have six theme weeks each year in addition to a large number of other activities, in addition to a dining out club. Our large auditorium has a wide variety of free movies on the big screen. Included is freshly popped popcorn, as well as soda pop or bottled water. Last, but surely not least, is the Glencroft Community of Faith. This is our on campus church, along with a very caring staff, and a wonderful pastor. We lived in another senior living community before this one, and have investigated many more. Without qualification this is the best place by far in Maricopa county. Are we pleased? I am an independent living resident here at Glencroft. I can honestly say that this place is wonderful. There are so many different things to do here - games, special events, exercise classes, events organized for off campus things. There's even a health clinic that just opened here. The staff here are great. They offer care for every different level of aging - independent living, assisted care, memory care, Parkinson's and stroke care. I hope that I will remain independent for many years to come; however, if I do need to go to a different level of care, I know that I am in the right place and I won't need to go elsewhere. Independent care, Glencroft is a great place to live. The residents and staff are friendly and helpful. We are a community where everyone is welcome and accepted. There is so much to do here,no one should ever be bored.We have a variety of card games,bingo, lectures,and a gym.We have entertainers come on Friday nights and movies on Wednesday night. I did some assignments through agency here and the staff, care, and environment are the best so far. They take staff and patient complaints seriously. They don't micromanage, they help and teach with grace. I would not only recommend this place for employment but for those looking for a long term care, assisted living and memory. read more

My mother lived in independent living for a year and that was a great experience. She fell and had to go to assisted living at Glencroft and although the aids were very kind and helpful the medical part of the assisted living was not good. I could give several examples but will share only one. My mother was on oxygen and the staff was to check her oxygen levels with a pulse oximeter, when they checked in on her, several times a day. My husband picked my mother up for a Dr appointment and noticed she was blue around the lips. She was taken to the hospital immediately and passed away at the hospital several weeks later. Yes my mother had health issues and I trusted that they would contact me if there was a change in her condition and it was visibly evident that she was in distress and needed immediate medical attention, which she did not get. I visited her at least weekly and frequently engaged with management and staff so it was not a situation of them not knowing who or how to contact me. Very disappointed with the neglect in care and overall management within the assisted living facility. read more

My grandmother was brought to Glencroft to their SNF section of the facility from a hospital admission. I had an encounter with a rude nurse that rolled her eyes at me when I asked where to get my grandmother some ice water and it took an hour and a half to get her any type of pain medication. On multiple occasions I would inform staff that my grandmother had wet herself, keep mind my grandmother is bed bound. They would come to answer the call light, which is when I would inform them, they would start walking away stating they would be right back to do it. On average they would take 30 to 60 minutes to return to change her. They would neglect to change her clothes when they were covered in food, brush her hair, and get her up out of bed during the day. I found out when the wound care provider was rounding that she had two unstageable pressure ulcers to her buttocks and a stage 1 pressure ulcer to her L ankle. This was news to me since when she left my house the one on her coccyx was closed with no other wounds on her. Due to the severity of her pressure ulcers he wanted her on bedrest, to be turned every two hours, and 1-hour allotment of being in the wheelchair for meals. She was moved to the second flood on their "purple" unit, things did not get better. The treatment of not changing her brief on time continued, staff talked her as if she was an annoyance, they didn't follow the provider's orders of limiting wheelchair time and turning her every two hours. When my grandmother would request to get back in bed, they would refuse her saying they were didn't trust her not to try to get out of bed even if it was against the provider's orders. The pressure ulcers had become infected at this point due to the neglect. I called Glencroft informing them that I wanted them to start the discharge process. Later that same day I went down to visit her but when my husband and I walked in she was laying on the floor in a soaked brief, she stated she had been trying to get someone's attention for a while. My husband and I picked her up off the ground ourselves, I noticed she had a swollen eye, bruises, and skin tears. When I finally found a couple CNAs they came to look at her and informed me that they would go find the nurse to look at her. It took 15 minutes for them to find him and I proceeded to watch this nurse walk by my grandmother's room four times before actually checking on her. This was the last straw, I told them that I was taking her home now even though they hadn't finished the discharge papers. I told them I didn't care if I needed to, I would sign her out AMA, Against Medical Advice, which is exactly what I did. Not only did they leave her with multiple wounds and bruises but they degraded her and neglected her. read more

I'm so INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTED in this place, I don't even know where to start!!!!!!!!! Our experience at Glencroft since transferring from independent living to assisted living....VERY short staffed, continuous staff turnover, medication management is SCARY, follow-through on outside physician orders is HORRIBLE!!! I have NO CONFIDENCE that anything is going to get done for my dad. I constantly have to follow up MULTIPLE TIMES. This whole experience, so far, has been exasperating and frustrating!!!!! My advice to anyone looking for an assisted living facility...do your homework diligently...I'm convinced there's GOT TO BE A BETTER place!! read more

You would be hard pressed to find a more amazing place in The Valley of the Sun to have your parents in than Glencroft Senior Living. From Security to cleanliness to, two great restaurants on the premises. Mass is actually fed onto a TV Station to your home and a heated indoor lap pool for year round exercise. Not to mention fashion shows and activities to suit their hundreds of seniors staying at this very nice community. read more

I am so confused about what is going on at this facility. My mother was admitted to Sara's Place 3 months ago and we visit her almost every day. I understand that it is a memory care facility but when I get a call from my mother and says she is out of toilet paper and I have to bring her 4 rolls of toilet paper it starts to raise my concerns. I have tried to call in to pay her bill and left 5 different messages with the accounting department this month with no return call. I did get through to the CEO who was more concerned about how I got his number than addressing my concerns. There are problems going on at this facility and I would move forward with caution. read more

I had always heard good things about this place until I had to plan an activity with someone there. My observations are not favorable. The place is highly understaffed in all areas, the food is mediocre, and the place is run by egotistical men who have their own little secret society and want their control to remain status quo. They make plans and schedules they cancel without truthful explanation and play favorites with who they personally know. While it touts itself as a "Christian" living center in two years I have yet to see that in the actions of those in charge. read more

My husband was there from the 2nd of September to the 13th of September when he passed away. When I placed him there he could walk (which they failed to do with him) so he became a vegetable in his bed. When I got there on the 13th he was breathing as if he had run a marathon and no one was doing a damn thing for him. I am a professional that has a partnership with Glencroft, but today I want to touch on Providence Place at Glencroft. I am going to say first hand that Providence Place has done a complete 180 from a year ago. Bendu, the Administrator is truly a leader that is marching her team to success. I have personally witnessed loving care from staff members like Iliana (SW) who will run through a wall for her patients, and Nicole (Director of SW) who leads by serving her team and others. Toni (Director of nursing) who is always on the floor nurturing her team. Audrey (LPN) who's so passionate about her patients and is on fire to ensure the best care possible for them. I was recently front row and privileged to witness a sweet and tender moment between Alex (CNA) and one of their residents...Alex didn't know I was watching and it brought tears of joy to my eyes, to see and hear her take care of a patient who needed some extra TLC. It is so much fun to be greeted by Julie at the front desk every time I am there who has taken time to learn my name and greet me with a smile. Recently, Sapphire jumped through a hoop to ensure a smooth admission. The entire team inside the behavioral unit called Joshua Tree, is knocking it out of the park as well. Gary and Tammy are leading their residents into all kinds of fun with activities. I wish I could name every single staff member. Keep up the good work Providence Place, I am proud to work with you. I highly encourage anyone looking for a Skilled Nursing Facility to consider Providence Place. The emoloyees here are rude. I spoke with Courtney in their authorization department who spoke in a condescending way. I called to verify if an authorization was obtained and with attitude said "I am not giving you that." I clearly was asking if one was obtained, verifying information when you're in charge of the patients care isn't against HIPAA. I asked to speak with the manager, who was rude herself and has absolutely no clue what she's doing. She wasn't able to give me a definitive answer if an auth is needed for skilled nursing vs long term care. I wouldn't want these people sending claims out on my behalf. read more

It may seem odd to be reviewing a retirement community but I feel strongly enough about this place that a review was warranted. My grandparents-in-law moved here about 7 years ago, giving up the home they loved but acknowledging it was best due to increased need for regular medical attention. But it didn't take long at all for them to love this place and today they tell us often how they should have moved there years before they did. They routinely tell us how they love that they can have their own place and freedom along with the peace of mind that comes with medical staff being in the same community. Their family shares that peace of mind. The on-site restaurant, library, grocery store, laundry and more mean that they don't have to go far for the necessities and for fun. There is even a bank and a church! In fact this community thinks of itself in terms of a Christian mission and the evidence of this is everywhere. Everyone seems happy, offers kind greetings and conversation and seems to be enjoying life. The housing is setup like apartments or condos. Theirs has a nice, safe bathroom, a comfortable bedroom and living room and an efficiency kitchen that is just big enough. It's such as nice place, I can see my wife and I retiring there some day. For that, I give Glencroft five stars. read more

I've been in the healthcare industry for over 20 years and this place is one of the best I've seen. I stopped by to visit an old friend and he showed me around the campus. It is simply amazing! There are so many amenities and so many beautiful things a part of this community that I can't even begin to start at any one place. The cafe that is attached to the retirement living serves delicious food. And I think its outstanding they have a bank, that's right a bank, in their building. They have a pool. They have a library. They have many dining rooms. And their staff is just simply the nicest people I have ever met. Also I saw that many residents were active and a part of their community as volunteers. They had a couple of resident run stores that were on the property and they were simply awesome. They had everything you can imagine wanting in a store. That was cool! I highly recommend you check out this place if you're looking for anywhere to live whether you're looking for retirement living, assisted living or nursing care. Excellent place! read more

Well it's been a year since my mom has been at Glencroft. They continue to try and make improvements to the place and the services are still good. In the year that my mom is been there I've noticed that there's a huge turnover in staff. But each new group people come in are still as nice as the previous. It is a nonprofit so I imagine this has a lot to do with the turnover. The only negative is the dining hall services. it seems as though they are really cutting corners there and the quality and service has gone south. It is one of the more reasonable senior living places in Phoenix so it's understandable that you're not going to have a five-star dining but please, hi are some dining hall staff with a little more common sense. They are friendly and nice to the residents though. Update**** well my mom is still here. Things are still going smoothly. Improvements to the property are made when possible, The staff have always been nice, they continue to find ways to keep the residents busy. They do try to come up with ways to try and entertain the residents. The housekeeping and security staff have been phenomenal. My mom is an independent tenant so I have no experience with their nursing home or rehab facility. Can't comment on that. This is one of the more reasonably priced places in the Phoenix metro area. Keep in mind this is a nonprofit organization. You're not going to get five-star dining or granite countertops however the apartments are very very nice. My mom does receive home health care on a weekly basis. Glencroft has a habit of changing around the company by the way they offer this service so that can be kind of annoying. Dining options are sort of lackluster but is sufficient. The dining rooms are very important for many of their residence as this is how many are able to socialize. I still feel Glencroft is a good value. read more
