He blew one payday 100% taking his friends on a bowling? Eating? Game playing spree? I'm not sure. This time he wanted a bike. Wheels. Transportation. Independence. For weeks he's talked about when he gets paid and his new bike. Would I help him pick it up? We scoped out a nearby bike shop. He switched to a pawn shop on his bus route home. Today was Thursday Sit and Chat, 2:30-4 pm Corner on the Market. He loves it because people enjoy him. Plus food and Independence! On the journey home was Grey Matter Bike Shop. We stopped to investigate. You donate a bike, they refurb it. Proceeds from used bike sales are donated to Barrow Neurologic Hospital. The owner's son died from brain cancer. Barrow treated him. The owner is paying back by healing old bicycles and donating the profit.. They also have a full showroom of fine electric and pedal powered bicycles at standard pricing. Plus excellent repair and service staff. Mr. G wanted a bike with a wide, comfortable seat. Sit and Chat Dave advised him to pick a bike short enough to not injure his groin areas when putting both feet on the pavement. We found a One Speed coaster brake cruiser, semi-fat tires. Simple to ride and repair. Wide, supportive seat. Built for comfort. Nearly new, brand new rear tire. $125.00. We pick it up tomorrow ar 10 am. read more

Unlike the bike shop around the corner(Landis) they are not jerks here, nor do they think they are above you because you don't ride a Pivot(one can dream though). Took my recent build bike to them to finish it off. Quoted me pretty in par with other bike shops and was done the next day. Took a tumble in Hance park on Saturday and thought I had destroyed my brooks bike seat. There goes $150 bucks right? WRONG! I walked in and told them what happened after going to a previous bike shop that told me I was completely screwed. They got inventive and used a tool meant for gram adjustments and were able to align my seat perfectly. No charge might I as. I was also appreciative if there service I bought a water bottle mount and new pedals just to give them my money. They then tuned up my bike and made sure I was good to hit the road. I messaged the business a day before, inquiring about tandem bikes, and I was able to come and rent one next day. We got there around 1pm and they close at 4 so we rented it for 4 hours which was $25. (It was either 4 hours or full day for $45 and we knew we didn't want it for a full day). Regardless I think the price is pretty reasonable imo. Everyone there was friendly and loved that they did a thorough inspection before renting it out to me to make sure nothing was wrong with the bike. I will come back here if I ever needed to rent a bike again. read more

Easy to find. Their team, especially Christian provided superior service. This was my first visit. I was referred by a neighbor. Christian jumped up and welcomed me and addressed the services that my bike needed and offered to get working on it while I waited. I purchased two new tires with my Yelp checkin 10% discount. The bike was waiting for me the following day at opening time, and they even offered to help me load my bike for the ride home. GMF is definitely my new go to bike store. (7th Ave location) Mike was extremely rude and performed services I did not ask for. I walked in for tubes and tires (2 bikes) was quoted 2 day turn around. I told Mike I'd buy the tubes and tires instead. He convinced me to leave them for him to do (chains also). When I returned Friday I was hit with a $350 bill!!!! Apparently Mike felt each bike needed a tune up and took the liberty of doing so at $85 a bike. I spoke with Erik the general manager who offered a $40 discount on the tune ups. Mike was very rude from the beginning. "I've got like 8 bikes before yours so it's going to take what it's going to take" when asked about turn around time. I tried this shop instead of Landis because they are a non profit, never again. read more

I live 1 block from this shop and I own many bikes, some electric conversions, and a couple specialty e-bikes. Even though I have a pretty full fledged bike shop in my garage, my wife and I used to bring our bikes here for quick repairs, tune ups, etc., since it is so close. I have around 10 invoices from this shop since they opened. We like to support small local businesses, love having a walk-able bike shop and like the charity aspect of this shop, which is why it pains me to leave this negative review and pull my support 100% from the shop. We were heading out on a ride yesterday when she got a flat tire really close to the shop, so we popped in around 5:30pm and asked if they could swap the tube. My wife's bike is Brompton Electric with a front hub motor. Mike noted right away that it's a special tube and he's not sure if he has it. We told him we have spares at home and can bring one, but then after some looking he said without a doubt they have that tube, and even gave us options for a thorn resistant tube! We have a lot of issues with these tubes so she said yes to thorn resistant, since we don't have those at home. He asked if he could work on it tomorrow, and we said sure, left him with the bike and walked the ~2000 feet home. Fast forward to the next day, my wife gets an invoice via text for $84, no itemization, though it says $0 in the labor field. They say that the tube is special and they don't have one and can order it, or she can come pick up the bike. She grabs an extra tube from our home stash and heads over to just get the normal tube swapped in for the $20 she's spent in the past at this shop for this service. When she gets to the shop Mike tells her that he had to take the whole bike apart to get to the tube to learn the specs, even though previously he had said they have that tube, in thorn resistant no less, and as a result there will be a labor charge, even though they did not fix the tube. You can find videos on YouTube that have the rear wheel of any Brompton off in about 10 seconds. Brompton, like every other AAA bike manufacturer, publishes the complete specs for all of their bikes online, down to the tube size. If I didn't know what I was looking at, or I thought I had to tear down an entire bike to get to the inner-tube, I might look it up before spending the labor, and I would not charge my customer for my lack of knowledge. Alternatively, you can deflate a tire, pop out one sidewall, then pull the tube out of the wheel without ever detaching it to learn the tube size definitively. Additionally, my wife was informed that the tube install service is now $45 dollars for electric bikes. This particular bike is a front wheel hub electric, the rear wheel has no e-bike components on it. It's just a regular wheel. There would not have been any reason to take the whole bike apart. I'm concerned that customers are getting charged hidden labor costs, and getting gouged for using e-bikes, many of which are no more complex than your average bike. We used to refer our Airbnb customers, our neighbors, and anyone who will listen to this shop. We can no longer recommend it to anyone, and have removed it from all of our social accounts and Airbnb listings. Landis Cyclery is just down the street, they they don't have any issues like this. read more

I've been to this shop 4 times in the last 4 months. On each and every visit one of the management team hasn't been wearing a mask. EACH VISIT. Four out of four times. --This, despite large signs on their doors that no one will be admitted without masks.-- Today was the straw that broke the camel's back. A large 200+ pound man with grey hair and large gut, standing behind the counter is BELLOWING at the top of his lungs without a mask on. I left and sat in my car for 10 minutes to get away from this fool. When I returned, he was STILL BELLOWING without a mask on... ten minutes later! Can you imagine the aerosols spread throughout the shop at that point after TEN MINUTES OF YELLING and spewing his fine aerosols? Covid or no, this man who I'm told was the manager on duty today (OMFG) had easily spread his personal 'mist' throughout the shop. This is no joke folks. Any statistician would agree that sampling four out of four encounters with a 100% rate of managers NOT WEARING MASKS equals 100% as far as probability is concerned that when you go to this shop, one of the managers won't be wearing a mask (or hadn't been before you walked in), but worse, has the need to bellow like an actor in an amphitheater to the rest of the shop for extended periods of time -- all without a mask on. REMINDER that scientists have found that normal talking has been found to spread aerosols up to 18 feet! And that's normal talking... The only type of mist I ever want to encounter in Arizona is on an outdoor patio whil enjoying the desert scenery. I certainly don't want or need human-generated micro-aerosol mists when I'm standing in line in a tiny crowded shop. I also need to mention that, when he put his mask back on, he proceeded to cough quite significantly. I'm not talking a quick "ugh, ugh", I'm talking a prolonged cough and then clearing of the throat. GREAT. He could already be sick or a carrier.... such confidence that gave me in wanting to return to this shop for a fifth maskless encounter -- not. I'm sorry for this review, but the hypocrites who own this shop, who purport to be a health-minded enterprise (and give money to Barrows) need to be called out for their utter lack of decency when it comes to Covid and customer safety. Covid kills faster than brain tumors dudes and you'd be well advised to make your customers comfortable and walk your f'ing talk considering you have a bleeping sign right on the door. It's not the other customers you have to worry about here, it's the uncaring, unapologetic management. (See the owners response to my first review last July. Nothing has changed.) read more

After being misquoted timelines 4 different times and 3 different iterations of calls from them to remind them what I was asking to have done (a repack of the bearings, new spokes and 2 new thorn resistant tubes)... I finally got my bike back 2 week's after the original timeline with a new wheel and instead of 2 new tubes they just put something in my existing tubes to guard against flats. However I did finally get my bike back...and then the next morning I woke up to a flat tire. One of the worst customer experiences I have ever had...from every person I talked to that didn't write anything down to the manager who said the focus has been on sales and not service and that he has raised the issue up the owner many times to no avail. read more

Being scoffed at when walking in, being swarmed with employees not wearing masks, being shouted at even though we were feet away or the fact that no one called when our service was done and when we did they repeatedly could not find the last or first name, only could find it based on the color and description. Unfortunate that I have to leave a poor review. Took my bike into the sister shop on 7th Ave for a tuneup. Wanted to give a new shop a try. Dropped my bike off and received a call back within an hour... was skeptical but picked it up and gave benefit of the doubt. Was clear that it did not receive a full tuneup... rather a spot check. Eric was gracious and let me bring it back in, I also decided to upgrade to new tires while I was in the shop. Once again, I felt my bike was spot repaired instead of fully tuned up; a bike wash was supposed to be included but I never received one, even upon reminding Eric. I consulted with Eric about new tires and decided on a change of size. Not his fault, but the tires were too large (some rubbing on fork) and had to bring the bike back a third time to swap down for size. I did receive a discount on the upgrade. But still, when taking the bike home, presta valve caps were missing and upon pumping the front tire the tube exploded (pinch flat... not properly installed). I wanted to like this place but felt that attention to detail was not given to service and my bike never left the shop fully serviced like I desired. read more

I was feeling good when I dropped the bike off. Not so much after I picked it up. One of the tires I ordered, which I was originally told was tubeless, was not tubeless. So they witched it out for a more expensive tire. Both tires do seem to have been installed correctly and they look good. So fine, good enough. Would have been 4 stars. However, I also ordered a wash and lube. In my haste to get back to work, on my lunch brake, I didn't check the bike to make sure that was done. DOH! Always check the work thoroughly before you leave the shop. The bike is filthy, still has dried sealant all over it and the chain doesn't appear to be lubed either. But I was definitely charged for both. What was going to be my new shop will now be a never again. Going back to Bike Barn or Exhale Bikes. read more

Eric gave me his undivided attention a few weeks ago at the start of a Saturday morning. He tweaked and tweaked my bike until I was comfortable. The bars were shorted, new grips were added. My seat was tilted just a smidge and I was given a quick coaching on proper positioning of my arms as to encourage proper posture.
