Summertime rolls...Jane's Addiction harmony in my head…read more On a holiday in the sun like Weezer in the lovely Pacific NW in the Summertime decided to do a yatra aka pilgrimage to People's Co-op. I lived walking distance from People's Co-op circa 2004 where I lived right across from the now defunct all vegan coffeeshop aka Red and Black. In 2004-2005 I was a working member cleaning the bulk bins as my seva aka service. This is where I first started teaching yoga at the community room upstairs at People's Co-op. Dusty started the program that sadly is no longer currently active. They had some great classes there and have fond memories of a Iyenger influenced yoga teacher that taught classes I liked. This was when I was teaching classical hatha yoga and had not yet shifted my yoga teaching to the Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition. Fast forward to the moment of Jun 20223. It's the return and went to People's Co-op. It still is an amazing place. They have a farmer's market here every Wed. Their bulk selection is amazing (see my photos) and so is there produce. Friendly and helpful staff. Afterwards go to Belmont for heaps of plant based, vegetable forward, tasty, amazing vegan restaurants and food trucks that are amazing. Vegan bars, vegan food trucks, innovative vegan restaurants like Fermenter, and more that will satisfy all folks who follow whatever diet from vegan to paleo to gluten-free to omnivore.

Since it was my first time, I didn't become a member, just wandered about to see what they carry. In support of sustainability and buying just what you need, they have bulk grains, nuts, seeds, and spices. Produce, milk, eggs, cheese, cereals, healthier versions of packaged mac&cheese, rice and noodle dishes, and other pantry items. They don't sell meat Since they are a vegetarian and vegan market. Specifically, I was looking for puffed quinoa, but they did not carry it. No one seems to! On this day, the adjacent parking lot was in use by their Wednesday Farmer's Market. It was easy to find parking on the street.

Their meat, cheese, bakery and freshly prepared foods sections are unparalleled. I come here for all my entertaining supplies, and sumptuous delicacies. Their petits four tea cakes are always available, absolutely darling, and crowd-pleasing. Whole Foods pricing is a bit higher than other markets in town, but this market carries many excellent products I can't find elsewhere. So you get what you pay for and I'm okay with that.

The space is expansive and thoughtfully designed, with just enough of a laid back vibe that makes one forget about the immediate gentrification of the neighborhood, while also being aware that someone might just take something and run at a moment's notice. (#1) From the produce section to the prepared foods, every corner of the store reflects a high level of attention to detail. The real highlight during my visit was the bakery department. I came in expecting a standard pre-made cake and left with something that bordered on a work of art. The staff were friendly, attentive, and clearly take pride in what they do--especially when it comes to cake decoration. The lettering was precise, the presentation flawless, and the result exceeded expectations in both appearance and service. If there's one consistent drawback, it's parking. Street parking in this part of Portland is often difficult and requires patience. It's not unique to this location, but it's worth noting if you're visiting during peak hours. Still, once inside, the store does a remarkable job delivering on what the brand promises--and in this case, perhaps a little more. ___________ (#1) A terrible west coast retail reference.
