I have been a fan of their salsa for years, I used to drive from Corvallis up the i5 just to go to the new seasons market off exit 289 just to get their salsa verde. Now that I live in Portland it's awesome to just visit the market to pick some up. Service-wise, they have always been kind to me and the shop has plenty of other bits and bobs to take a look at too. Now that I think about it, the first time I tried this salsa it was because there were some damaged containers they could not sell and a man was delivering them to one of the new seasons markets at the same time I was delivering a product from my place of work at the time. He was incredibly kind and offered me the salsa after assuring me the only thing wrong with them was some breaking in the packaging. I still associate the salsa with that act of kindness. read more

I love Kaah Market. I have been supporting Kaah since I moved to Portland in 2015. All of their prepared foods look simple, but if one is a cook, you know the amount of time and ingredients that are required for their prepared foods. So, whenever I want to have Latin home cooking, but without the effort, I go to Kaah market. Their food is not overly seasoned, their beans are full of flavor without the use of any animal products, and their rice is the best I have ever tasted. Every now and then I get tired of supermarket salsa and want something a little better. I'll go 20 mins out of the way just to get some of the fantastic salsas that Kaah Market handmakes. Kaah is a tiny market and it's usually well stocked each time I go, but I honestly just skip over all of that and head towards the salsa cooler...where there are around 6-10 types of salsa stacked high in their cooler. Each tub of salsa costs about $5 (guac is $6). There is a self served sample cart to the left of the cooler where you can try everything they sell. It seems like about 1/3 to 1/2 of these salsas rotate thru and the other half are mainstays. I do it Salt and Straw style and try as many of the salsas that I can and usually stop when I feel a little guilty lol. Honestly all of the salsas taste pretty fantastic...I've never tasted anything that I thought was bad that came from Kaah, however I usually resort to buying the same 3 things from them. The fruit salsa that has pineapple and or mango depending on what's ripe I assume, and their avocado salsa, and their guac are usually my go tos. The house brand of chips they sell is produced locally and is pretty much the exact opposite of Juanitas brand chips which has become somewhat of a local's favorite here in Portland. The chips here are thin, a little darker than my preference, not greasy, and not salty...this is exactly everything I like about Juanitas. But for some reason I ended up liking these chips even more than Juanitas. It really boggled my mind when I first had them. Here's a bonus tip if you like your salsas hot. I usually take my tubs to the cashier and ask if they can make it spicier for me...and she will usually chop up a few peppers (habanero in my case) on the spot and mixed them into my salsas free of charge. read more

I've been reading a cookbook of Incan, Mayan and Aztec food, and Melba's been studying Spanish for a couple months, plus the Mercado only about mile & half from home--we drive by it almost daily but this just our 3rd visit. The woman running the store was SO helpful and nice. And just as he were going to check out a guy came by with a cart of pork(asada?) just off the grill, so got some of that for dinner. So many things stuffed into such a small space, including a couple local products. read more

Down on SE 72nd and Foster sits a great little cart pod called Portland Mercado. But it's not just about the carts here. No. There's a building too, with a few vendors inside, as well as a seating area and community space. And inside this little common area is a spot called Kaah Market. This tiny tienda features an array of produce, Mexican foodstuffs, some international foods, and, most importantly, fresh salsas. In general, the selection of goods is limited and kind of specific. So the primary gist of this review is the fresh salsa experience. First off, the abundance of salsas on offer here would be overwhelming, if it weren't for the tasting bar. There's a station outside the main entrance to the store with all of their fresh-made salsas and picos on offer. I actually came in looking for escabeche, which they have as well, and found this salsa bar, much to my delight. And it did not disappoint. The salsas cost around $5-$6 per pint, which isn't necessarily cheap. But they're damn good. I brought home two salsas. The first, Fire, as it's so aptly named, is a thick, nutty salsa with plenty of heat. Not sure what pepper, but not habañero. I can place that taste anywhere. It's rich and deep and fiery. The second is a tomatillo morita salsa - tangy, rich and just the right amount of spice. A nice departure from the arbol-dominated salsas that pervade NW Mexican cuisine. I demolished about half a pint of this salsa in one sitting. It's that good on chips, I can't imagine how amazing it would be on some rotisserie chicken or grilled asada. MMM... The escabeche is quite tasty. And the guac they sell is very lime-forward, a nice citrus bomb. I had no idea this salsa magic was happening so close to my hood. I used to have to make the trek out to León to hey my salsas locas, however from here on out I'll just drive on down to Kaah at the Mercado. Great find, and I hope you find it too. read more
