After reading reviews of Go Getter Handyman and meeting both Ken and his business partner (Moses) in person, we decided to utilize them to complete small projects around our house in March of this year. In our face-to-face conversations, Ken and Moses prided themselves on their level of professionalism and responsibility. After signing the contract and giving Ken his 1st payment, which included the cost of materials, Ken was very good about giving us prompt text messages and updates regarding the purchasing of materials and a prompt start date for the work.
The work was projected to be completed within 2 days, which was mostly outdoor work, including deck and tile work.
On what was projected to be the second/last day of work, at around 4 PM, Ken and Moses stated that they had more tile work to finish, but planned to come back to complete the work another day.
I ended up paying Ken and Moses the second/last payment on the second day knowing that the project wasn't fully completed. I acknowledge, especially looking back, this was a mistake.
At the time I'm posting this review, it's been over three months and Ken and Moses never returned to finish the work.
Both my significant other and myself have sent Ken multiple text messages inquiring about dates and times for him to come out to complete the work. Ken would respond with loosely framed timelines that never came to fruition. He acknowledged that he didn't complete the work and reassured us he would complete the job. But as days turned into months, we found out this was not the case. Despite giving more than adequate grace and flexibility for both him and his business partner, Ken and Moses never finished the job in a reasonable time frame. As time progressed, Ken made it very clear that we were not priorities and that he had other clients that he had to see before returning to our job.
To make matters worse, the tile work we were left with was the worst job we had ever seen. On the last day that Ken and Moses were working on the tile (ie: slate tile steps), they slathered grout over all of the top of the tiled pieces. They also left about half-inch grout lines or larger in areas where tile used to be, rather than installing tile pieces. These large areas of grout later cracked and started to break off.
Ken and Moses assured me and my significant other, prior to the start of the job, that they complete tile work. Though I am not an experienced tile worker, I have never seen or heard of a tile worker slathering grout on the top of tile and leaving it to harden.
After waiting months and giving Ken and Moses more than ample time to complete the project, we ended up having our contractor complete the job. Our contractor outlined several issues with the tile work, including how the grout was applied and how the tile pieces were laid down. It wasn't until the contractor cleared the grout off the stone that we found more issues regarding how the tiles were laid out. There were several irregularly cut and jagged tile pieces. Some pieces were installed about a quarter of an inch or higher than the surrounding tile pieces, creating an unsafe surface and tripping hazard. As if this wasn't bad enough, when I was walking down the steps several of the tile pieces caved under my feet, including a tile on the top of the step and several tiles covering the riser on the step. This indicated the tile pieces were not applied correctly. I also feel it's best to mention that Ken and Moses knew we had young children living here who would also be utilizing these steps, which are one of the main walkways around our house.
We reached out to Ken and asked, in a considerate message, if he would be willing to refund us part of the cost of the job as the job was never finished and we had to use a contractor to complete and redo his work. We mentioned we wanted to come to a fair agreement and cost, or we would feel obliged to write a review about our experience. Ken responded "no" to our request for fair reimbursement. He then added that he kept a message of me stating to use his "best judgment" when laying down the tile steps. Though this is correct, this does not negate the fact that he never returned to finish the work, and of the work that was installed, it was left in a hazardous state.
Ken disputed that he would not be able to level out the newly added tile pieces with the surrounding tile because of the unlevel surface of the steps. However, when the contractor completed the job, there were no issues, and everything looked seamless, including the leveling of all the newly installed tile pieces.
Ken and Moses' Go Getter Handyman website, as well as the wording in their written contracts, pride themselves on their service and professionalism, however, we have found the experience to be quite the contrary. We are writing this detailed and informed review to warn others about our experience. read more
