Bar where you can drink here and later. Go Tavern And Liquors is like a bar and a liquor store. It's a pretty cool concept, so you can drink wherever. Has pretty good prices on most items. There's a few TVs so you can watch games of you're hanging out here for some time. After getting something from the store near here the last time, I came in. It's a pretty dark place. There's not that much as far as being fancy, but you don't come here for that. It's about $6 a cocktail. They have cheap shit and more expensive stuff. An old bar is usually filled with a few regulars, and then there's the liquor to go. Yes you can take a bottle to have later. Good idea so you don't drink too much right away. There's a surprising amount you can find here. Find good liquors with low prices and stay awhile. It's a place for hanging out or just coming in to get a bottle or a few. Wow this was not what I was expecting and so glad I tried this place. It's a liquor-store-slash-bar (a "slashy"?) but it's much more bar than liquor store, and it is a lot nicer than I expected at a dive bar. Really long counter, plenty of space, friendly bartenders, three big TV's behind the bar that were playing Good Will Hunting, Goodfellas, and A Simple Favor. Good place... it's an old "Slashie" that's been updated with tons of great craft brews at very reasonable prices! Trust me you will not find ANY joint in Chicago that offers beers of this quality on draft at these prices. Walking in, it's a liquor store with a large bar on the left side with about 15 stools. Beer menu consists of about 15 drafts as well as many bottles & cans! Everything from a $2 Budweiser to a $6 Three Floyds. They also have hard liquor if that's your thing. I gave 2 stars because I'm disappointed. I am very familiar with Go. It's a place I have supported since 2017, showing up at Go when I have an exceedingly rough day, holding meetings for activities, hanging out with friends - I even met my life partner at Go. When the shutdown happened, I supported through buying beers there when I could (to go of course) and reposting any social I could find on them. It holds a special place in my heart, which is why we went there last night to celebrate that I got into a doctoral program. It was the only place I wanted to be. Go is not fancy. They have an incredible selection, some beers on draft, and a lovely wall of liquor you can choose from behind the bar. There are typically a few bartenders on at one time. Of course things have changed from COVID-19 and we were planning to head towards the patio with food we picked up on the way after I grabbed myself a beer and my partner a coke - he doesn't drink. I approached the bar as anyone does, leaning over to look at a menu. The bartender; who had long brown hair, great makeup, and a lovely patterned mask; walked over and took the menu from under my eyes as I was looking it over to contemplate what I wanted to get. She shot me a bit of a glare and - honestly - maybe something had happened that day that made her upset. I have no idea. She handed the menu I had been looking at to a couple that was further down the bar so that they could take a look. It was a paper menu and I was honestly just shocked because nobody has ever removed a menu from my sight as I was clearly postured over it to provide that same menu to someone else. She walked around, looking frustrated, and talked to the other staff as she served the other two people who were in the bar at the time. I was a bit shocked, but just waited patiently for her to return. She reached under the bar where I was standing and produced a fresh paper menu. What was shocking about this was that she could have done that for the other couple as well - which would have been better form. As someone who has also bartended for years, I would have grabbed that from underneath and given it to the other couple - simple, safe, effective and doesn't violate the norms of letting someone look over a menu. I knew what I wanted pretty quickly, and she asked to see IDs. I grabbed mine but my partner had forgotten his. I mentioned this and she said we needed to leave. I just asked if this was still true if he wasn't going to drink and we were planning to be outside on the patio, and she aggressively responded "this is a bar" as though I couldn't hear her, didn't understand, or that I had some sort of prior knowledge of the specific policies. I didn't want to fight at all because I don't know what that person had gone through that day and although you can typically have someone sit away from a bar but cannot serve them from a bar (hello, bassett certification) if they are under 21 - Go may have different policies and I respect that. Since you basically have to buy everything at the bar, that could contribute to the way that the law plays into things as well. I respect that too. We put the coke back and left without asking any further. Here's the thing. I go to Go Tavern for many reasons. I love that place, and it's somewhere that has held great memories. We all have stressful lives. We all have things going on - and like I said, she could have had something that happened just before that was a big push back or something like that. As someone who has bartended for years. As someone who goes through extremely stressful situations on a daily basis for my full-time job. As someone who knows the laws and regulations and basic customer service - this fell short even for Go - which is noted as a great dive bar. When you treat a customer that way, especially one who holds an establishment in a special place in their heart, you make that place feel uncomfortable. This means that my partner and I won't return for our bigger anniversaries or special moments - because now it feels like we are unwelcomed. Not just because of the moment when the ID wasn't there, admittedly that falls on us for not having it, but from the moment we walked in it was like we took up too much space that wasn't ours. I sure hope someone talks to that bartender about this experience. I'd hate for others to go through the same thing and lose a special place as well. read more

I was actually at another very nice whiskey bar and restaurant, and when the waiter saw me fumbling for a bourbon to order, he said "you know where you should really go, Go." Okay so it may seem like I work for this place but I don't, I'm just incredibly enthusiastic and I have some time on my hands. I also frequent the place because I love it so much. I just added photos of the current menus and the new exterior. I'd hate for Yelpers to get confused. But really, guys, c'mon. Do you like craft beer? All craft beer drafts are between $2.50 and $4. You can't beat that. Last night we were drinking Anchor, Sierra Nevada and Great Lakes bottles for $1 because they were on special. $1!!! That's cheaper than if I bought them in a 12 pack. Not into craft beer? Okay, well PBR drafts are $1.75 and Miller and Bud are $1.50. I would never recommend you opt for those over the craft selection but to each their own, old schoolers. They have a huge selection of bottles and cans, and their whiskey selection is top notch. We tried this really rare (and normally astronomically expensive) Goose Island bourbon barrel aged beer for only $10 a bottle. That's a steal compared to any of the other few places that you can find it at. If you're into shooters, or if you're feeling a little adventurous, try the lemon drop shooters (only $1.50 if you 'like' Go Tavern on Facebook) or Thin Mint shooters. I'm not big into girly drinks, but I always end up getting one of these every time I'm there because they taste like candy but they are STRONG. Definitely a good combination. There are 3 large TVs that are always playing whatever game is on. Obviously Mike and all of the staff at Go Tavern are awesome. Everyone who frequents the place knows that. This is such a great neighborhood dive bar that even if you're visiting you'll feel like you live around the corner and have been going here for years. There is a really strange yet wonderful camaraderie among the patrons that I feel is lost in most bars these days. If you want you can sit at the bar by yourself and watch the game in peace, or if you're feeling social there are plenty of friendly people who are up for good (or at least fun drunk) conversation. This is a great place to go to alone or with a group. Again, gotta love the snack selection. Since it is a liquor/convenience store as well a bar there are tons of awesome cheap snacks. Also the tamale guy has been known to make appearances as well as pizza guys selling $8 pizzas. So obviously my review is meant to encourage people to come, however if you suck and don't see the charm in a slashie dive then don't bother coming. I say this mainly because I'm usually there and I don't want to hear stuck up people complaining that this is nothing like the Aviary. It's not. This is far-and-away my favorite bar in Logan Square. I happened upon it, drawn to the flashing marquee sign late one night, after not wanting to wait in a long line at Scofflaw. My first impression was something like "oh, this is just a liquor store with barstools," but it feels oddly familiar and charming after you have a seat and order a round. The bartenders are so friendly and after visiting a couple times, they greet you like a regular. Being a liquor store, they have a surprisingly diverse variety of draft and bottled beer (and cocktails as you'd expect). They always have a rotating Three Floyds beer on draft and almost always have Zombie Dust in bottles. They also have a nice patio and four big TVs behind the bar playing sports and old movies to watch like Scarface, Taken, Alien or Dumb & Dumber -- which is more fun than it sounds. read more

I've lived in this neighborhood for something like 4-5 years. I've walked past Dorothy's many times knowing I'd never step foot in there. Well, that all changed this Christmas. My aunt was over and somehow convinced my mom to do Jager bombs........I don't drink Red Bull, but I was all for seeing this so I volunteered to walk to Walgreens. Of course, leave it to me to get a brilliant idea to get more booze as well. I call, they say they're open, I get my shoes and coat and head over. Yes, it smells like pee. Yes, it's pretty dingy looking. Yes, there's a bar with 4-5 people sitting at it at any given time, but most importantly....THEY HAVE A SWEET SELECTION. The gross beer lover in me falls in love with any place that has Steel Reserve. The smart beer lover in me can appreciate a store within walking distance that has beers like Alpha King, Brooklyn Chocolate Stout and a slew of other delicious beers. Fast forward to New Year's Day and I ask my boyfriend if he wants to get beer for the Sugar Bowl or just wants to drink what I already have. He realizes the store is on the way to my house and says we should stop, so we do, and I notice plenty of things I missed the first time. Amy's frozen foods anyone? RANDOM, but I like it! I happen to look around and notice gluten-free products and some things that Whole Foods carries. Still random, definitely unexpected, but if I ever have a hankering for an Amy's burrito, or something, and I don't feel like driving anywhere.........I'm walking here. The wine selection looked alright. I was surprisingly a little disappointed with the hard liquor. They have everything I'll drink, but never in the size I want. Honestly, the only reason I took off a star was because of the smell. The men's restroom will always undoubtedly smell like strong piss but your tab at the end of the night makes it worth it. This place is dope with craft pours no more than usually $4 and whiskey pours around $6. It's not your standard liquor store/ bar since it draws in the hip crowd on weekends but most of the time you can be mad comfortable here. You'll catch the old man at the bar wanting to share his pork rinds with you. Or the bartender ear hustling your conversation and mailing themselves an invite. And my favorite is the bunch bringing in frituras from next door that makes me follow suit as well. The patio definitely sets the place apart tho. Anytime I'm able to belly up to the bar then grab the same beer I was just drinking as a roadie I'm all about it and Go Tavern and Liquors is one of our citie's finest. There's a super extensive selection of everything and if it's not on the bar menu they'll open anything from the cooler so it is. Pair this privilege with scratch off lottery tickets and some of the nicest dive bar tenders anywhere in town and Go is definitely a go for a fun and financially responsible evening out. read more

My plan to become a borderline alcoholic during my unemployment has hit a snag. See, this is probably the best place nearby me to accomplish this feat and it's got a fatal (or, in this case, possibly not fatal) flaw. Two-Way is closer, but there are hipsters there on the weekends to really ruin its skid row vibe. Therefore, this place is the best pure dive bar in Logan Square. And if I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it right, darn it! Now, this flaw is not the price of beer at the bar. That is amazing. They have $1.25 mugs of PBR, Budweiser, and Miller Lite. $1.25. MUGS! The flaw is also not the staff. This is a local, friendly staff. Patient to almost a fault to put up with what are some unruly customers at times. The last time I was in, a guy flat out refused to pay. The cute, buxom main bartendress (worth the fifth star by herself) just stood her ground and took back the beer. And she's super nice as well. If I were to choose a Leaving Las Vegas partner (just a bartender to talk to, mind), she'd be a good candidate. The flaw is definitely not the selection of package goods to take home. The to-go beer here is as cheap or cheaper than the going rate. And they have MD20/20, an impressive selection of 40s, Boone's Farm, and the like. All of the laundry list of "drink on the street" alcohols. Plus, they have snacks and toiletries for a pinch. I've never tried, but you can probably use them at the bar. The snacks, not the toiletries. No. The flaw, the big reason I could never become an alcoholic here, is the lighting. All of the other package good stores I've been in seem to put the liquor store aspect second. Dorothy's seems to put it first. And the lighting for safety betrays this fact. The first time I walked in, I was practically blinded. If I were to walk down the "Devil's path," I would prefer to do it in dark anonymity. Plus, the music here is pop dance jams. It's kind of fun to see *other* drunks dancing, but I would also prefer to drink myself into a constant stupor daily to the sounds of Tom Waits or something similarly dark. But that's just me. It hasn't prevented many others from accomplishing this feat and making this an interesting local spot. read more

My new neighborhood booze stop - I'd give this place 5 stars, but I always get hassled on my way in/out of here by mangy, aggressive alkies. That's what I get for being 4'11" and utterly non-threatening looking, I guess, a pox on my tiny genes! Still, despite the hassles, it is a decent little one stop shop. Toilet paper, snacks, decent wine/booze selection (cheap to higher end), and it even has it's own bar that seems to be doing a brisk business at all times of the day. Somehow, it manages to be clean and skeezy at the same time. Oddly enough, the owner - who is very friendly - only seems to speak a small bit of Spanish, so I see a lot of nodding and grunting going on at the counter/bar. Although prices tend towards the reasonable side and I'm not sure if this policy applies across the board, I saw the owner charge a fellow 75 cents for a pack of matches today - he stood his ground placidly even when the guy started screaming at him. Logan Square. If you don't live there, do you ever visit? Do you have friends there? Well for me, the answer is yes to both questions. And when I get a chance to walk around certain parts of that neighborhood, I can discover a few great things every time I do. Catching up with an old friend, I met up at a local bar (to be reviewed later) and after a few, I wanted to head down to a bar named after a famous photographer (again, another future review). As we started walking down Armitage, my friend told me they wanted to have a drink in a liquor store they had seen many times, but never patronized. Drinking in a liquor store? Never heard of that before for in this town?! But I was game. Dorthy's is a family run business. Simple, well lit, and full of working class guys and gals that are as nice as anyone can be. The bar is simple with beer coolers behind it and liquor for sale in front of it....it has anything you'd need......to get your "drink on" that is..... Prices are cheap, folks are nice, there is a bathroom in the back, and a small juke box on the wall as well. HINT: Go there anytime it is cold outside, I'd recommend you keep your jacket on as the breeze between the front door and the back door (folks go back there to smoke) makes it somewhat cool. But all and all a fun little slice of what I'd call "local chicago" and something everyone should try......or as I like to say....get out of your hood from time to time *grin* read more

This place is a dive bar/liquor store and they have cheap ass beer here on draft. $1.25 Miller Lite and PBR per pint. I had two Miller Lites. I would of had more but we had two more stops on the bar crawl we were on. Also they offer a bucket of Miller Lites, but I don't know for how much. They have a good selection of craft beer and 40s. I've long given up on the bar scene as old age creeps up my increasingly crooked spine. Although, a while back I stumbled upon Go Tavern. From my first few steps into this place I knew I had found the grail, the cup of Christ, or whatever made up artifact that helps capture my joy from finding this place! The beer and drinks are cheap and delicious, the staff is down to earth and super friendly, it's part liquor store part bar which is not only amazing but convenient as hell! I love watching the Cubs and Hawks here and they actually have the sound of the game on!? There's even a patio for those nice weather days. So anytime anyone asks my to "go out". Dorothy's--what a weird and magical place. Every time I come in here, something odd happens. On one occasion, a friend got his hat stolen right out of his hands when a little doggie jumped up and decided to play fetch with it. On another occasion, a man with an eye patch came up to comment on my beer selection. He prefaced his story by explaining that while he no longer drinks, he keeps some Okocim at his house,*just in case* someone else comes over to drink. But this one-eyed gentleman was clearly drunk. Someone once asked me if I was a sex worker here, too. And sometimes there are kittens playing on the floor. Moving on, the beer selection is great. No, really. Last year they had some Stone Vertical Epic selections in big bottles, for instance. The always have a solid selection of Goose Island specialty brews, Great Lakes, Two Bros, Three Floyds, et al. They change it up, too, so if you don't come in for a couple weeks, they'll have some new, interesting stuff to choose from. The wine, on the other hand, is poorly selected and too damn expensive. The cigarettes here cost about $1.50 more here than they do at the nearby Tobacco City. You didn't think I would have all this to say about Dorothy's, but I did. I've frequented this store for about two years. I've never stayed for a drink, I just wouldn't fit in so well with the crowd. But if you need to pick up beer and you're on Armitage & Kedzie or Kimball, Dorothy's has the best selection of beer you'll find in the immediate environs. read more

I guess this place has been here for awhile, but recently changed its name, making it difficult to find online. I guess the only downside is that it is brightly lit since it is also a retail location and probably depends on getting a lot of people through. That's a necessary compromise though. I dig this place. From the amazingly cute bartender who studied Wiemar history to the other dudes who make this place hum this is a real bar-and cash and carry place. Getting a seat at the bar can be tough on a game night, but the mix of people in here is what makes it fun. From the newbie hipsters who just ventured west of Kedzie, to the old guy who mops up the floors, to the old hipsters who "remember when this was a bad area" to the older folks who have been coming here for years. It is just about as real Chicago as you can get and I love it when these places can change with the times and stay in business as the hipster gentrification spreads. On a good night you can catch some local flavor having a few too many Tecate's and they will try to hit on you but that's ok sweetie, I just need a pack of Camel lights and then I am outta here. 10 years ago they used to have tables in the back and people would dance on top of them. This is an amazing place to pre-game before hitting Best Intentions, Scofflaw, and the other high end cocktail bars along the Armitage Crawl. The adorable dessert-themed shooters are sweet without being cloying and dangerously strong. At $5-6 a pop, you can get your beer coat in prior to that long walk in the snow for under $20. There's not a lot of seating, so plan to pop in for only a few minutes if you're a group of more than 3. Bartenders are always super friendly and cards are accepted. Protip: the back patio can seat a small group if you can catch it while empty! read more

I come here a lot as it is the closest liquor store to my house. I've never drank here, though I'm sure it could be fun. It's a dive bar/ package liquor in the truest sense of the word. Kind of reminds me of a Hispanic version of Ola's in the Ukranian Village if you've ever been there. The music and TV are always blaring. People are stumbling around and dancing. The florescent light really adds to the ambiance of this scene as you are shopping for some alcohol or snacks. The owner is always friendly and seems to be a good guy. I guess I never considered it to be anything special, certainly not for the neighborhood, and not really worth reviewing, but recently I've noticed that the beer selection is surprisingly pretty damn good. read more
