Fun neighborhood bar. You'll never know what to expect here. No tap service but a great beer and shot place.

Stop #13 on my "Eating my way through Chicago/St. Louis and possibly doing other things on this trip Summer Tour 2011" took me to an old dive bar that my friend used to hang out at all the time. The main reason was because of Stella herself. She is one of the nicest bartenders around. This is a dive bar. We don't seem to have places like this in Portland, OR. We have places that claim they are dive bars, but it almost feels fake there. That is not the case at all with Stella's. It doesn't try to be something that it isn't. You don't go here for mixed drinks. You go here to grab a beer, maybe play some pool and catch up with your friends. Stella is my friends favorite bartender. I know this because he told me to tell her that he missed her. She in turn told me the same back and gave me a gift for him that she brought back from her last trip home (I think she is Ukrainian if memory serves me right). Stella's gave me some good memories. It reminded me of a place I had been to a few times when I lived back in Hoboken, NJ. I really felt like I was transported back to that bar when I was inside Stella's. It was a place I hadn't thought about for a long time. If I lived in Chicago, this would be my go to bar. I hope to get back again someday. If you are in the neighborhood, stop in and say hello to Stella for me. I bet she'll have a great big smile on her face. Not because of me. Just because she seems like that kind of a woman.

We made a reservation at Over/Under. When we arrived, there weren't a lot of people yet and we got seated quickly at a table already set up with our name on it and lots of fun swag. By the time the game was starting, it was packed. TV's lined the walls all the way around so every table was a good table. No one blocked our view. We each received 5 drink tickets and 2 meal tickets. In addition to the fact that we wiped the floor with Kansas, we met some really nice fans from Chicago. They made our visit so much fun, filled with endless laughter and a great time. It was a nice mix of young and older folks like us and the young people were so respectful and friendly. It truly was a pleasant surprise. They gave us their bar stools with backs so that we would be comfortable. I don't know if Steven David, who we also met there works for the bar but he was funny as all get out. He says he's a comedian so if you're in Chicago, look for him at a comedy club. The owners were very friendly and we appreciated chatting with them too. We didn't get to our second meal or order half of our drinks bc we were having such a good time so we gave them away. The pretzels were good and nachos weren't bad. Edible. They also offered free opps for prizes and you could also buy tickets to win prizes. Overall, we really enjoyed our time. Nice neighborhood bar feel, surrounded by great humans, including the owners.

My brother and I tried a few menu items, but our favorites were definitely the wings with the Dragon sauce (sweet chili, sesame, soy and ginger) and the sautéed shrimp with potatoes. Be sure to try their cocktail called "Uncut Gem" and check out the Red Zone room! Enjoy!

I think there were some kind of corporate happy hour happening in the back, but a friend and myself just came in for quick drinks. I usually don't drink on the weekdays, so I ended up just getting an iced tea and him a tequila soda, but because I don't drink, we decided to get an appetizer and we browsed the menu for a minute and ended up splitting the Parmesan chicken egg rolls. Truthfully, I really just wanted to see what that would entail because it seemed a little disgusting or maybe even some kind of high-food, but to my surprise, it was actually a really crispy skinned pizza roll. I'm pretty sure it had been previously frozen, but in that moment- served with a side of marinara, I didn't really care. It was full of gooey melted mozzarella cheese and almost like a breaded chicken nugget center. Pretty decent as far as bar food goes. They also had crab rangoon to which I thought, "hmm are they doing a little too much?!" I'm sure drunk me would have gotten them years ago so what can ya do. Overall, quite a positive experience. The bartender was really sweet and everything wasn't super expensive. I've been in the neighborhood for such a long time, but I've actually never been here and I'm glad I came on a night that it wasn't chaotic.

We saunter up to our chosen restaurant only to find a sign on the door that says, "closed for private event." Did I mention I was hangry? My husband suggests Jake Melnick's. It was within walking distance ... did I mention it was raining that night? And I was hangry? I was game for anything at that point. We arrived and waited probably four minutes for a table. A couple of the adults ordered a beer, the others ordered a Coke. We ordered a large pretzel and our mains. The pretzel was so good. All the meals were outstanding (a sliced brisket sandwich, some wings, chicken tenders, onion rings and a burger). Service was great. It was a little loud when we first arrived as there was an intense Illinois State basketball game on but as soon as the game ended, it was much quieter. We really enjoyed our meal at Jake's!

I want to preface my review with the positives, Londyn was our server & was truly so kind, thorough, and friendly. The restaurant itself is clean & all tables have clear views of the TVs on game days. Now for the room for improvement- the food was very underwhelming. Being from the Chicago area previously, I regularly advocate for the Chicago food scene, and this unfortunately did not meet those standards. We ordered the Brussels sprouts, buffalo cauliflower, wings, and sesame ginger salad: -Brussel sprouts: tasted like they weren't seasoned just air fried and drenched in balsamic dressing -Buffalo cauliflower: soggy, unseasoned, runny buffalo sauce -Wings: PERFECTLY CRISPY, but no flavor (we ordered lemon pepper & buffalo) -Sesame ginger salad: sloppy mix of vegetables tossed in an overly sweet sauce with no sesame or ginger flavor in sight If you're not going to eat, this is probably a great spot, but from a food standpoint, there is room for improvement.
