I never had this bad experience in any restaurant. The server was very rude when we wanted to seat in the corner. We were a group of 12 and as everyone arrived we sat and were about to order. This server came back and told us that we should be able to leave in 0ne hour because they want to accomodate other customers. We understand the sentiment and they want us to expedite the orders but the way he said was so rude. We ended up leaving the restaurant right away. My first visit to Godavari - the successor to Ambassador - was for their lunch buffet. The only similarities are that they continue to have a really large variety of dishes on the buffet (even more now), and that they kept the tandoori chicken and chicken tikka masala. The majority of the dishes are Southern Indian in nature. I was not a fan of as many of these dishes personally, but that was only as a matter of taste. There's no denying the quantity of dishes on the buffet, and the quality is there as well. Many of the dishes were new to me, and the dishes I liked, I really liked. The tandoori chicken was perhaps the most tender I have ever had, with the meat just about falling off the bone. I also enjoyed the beet dish and the fried chicken and peppers. There is a wide variety of rices and rice dishes. They also include chai on the buffet table, something Ambassador did not offer. There were not 1 but 3 different desserts, a rice pudding, a fruit custard/pudding, and carrot halwa. The halwa was my favorite among the desserts; it had a rich flavor and was nowhere near as sweet as I've had it elsewhere. The rice pudding was savory instead of sweet, and I believe it actually had some peppers in it. The fruit custard felt a bit industrial, almost like a vanilla custard with a deep mango flavor added (too strong to be made from actual mangoes). I would have liked to see a few additions. The first would be knives at your table. The majority of the meat dishes feature meat still on the bone, and a knife would have helped immensely. I also would have like to have my water glass filled a little more frequently. But overall, I thought they did a very good job with their lunch buffet. read more

I have been here a few times. And the experience has been generally positive but some dishes are very inconsistent on quality. Like one time we had excellent Gobi Manchurian and the next time we ordered it was just lacking. Went here for dinner by myself, while traveling on business. The location is pretty convenient, just off of I-90. Dining by ones self at any Indian restaurant means you will be taking things home, the portions are meant for sharing. I had my two favorite dishes, the Lamb Vindaloo and Aloo Gobi. One vegetarian dish and one non. Plus some butter naan. Dishes were served with rice. I basically had enough for two, so I took half home for my lunch. Both dishes were excellent. I ordered the medium heat since I haven't tried this place before, and the heat was perfect. Atmosphere was relaxed with some nice music playing. The place started to get crowded at about 7:30pm. One of the best places if not the best place to try great Indian food and easy on the pocket. The staff is friendly, ambience is great, food is superb. Tried the Tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, and hyderabadi chicken biryani. 10/10 for the food except the biryani which was decent but not the best iv had in Boston. 8/10 for the biryani. The desserts were awesome, gulab jamun & ras malai. Must visit place if ur a foodie and love Indian food. Will definitely go again. It's been quite a while since I've been able to get back here, as I've been tightening the proverbial belt and trying to save money by cooking instead of going out. But I just can't make a great dosa. So after a long time, I came on a busy, rainy Thursday night for a much-craved-for dosa. Typically I have found Godavari's dosas too much on the soft side, so I ordered the ghee roast dosa, and it was indeed super crispy and awesome (alllmost overdone). Only at a place like this can you get your dosa with amazing peanut and ginger chutneys in addition to the usual coconut chutney and sambar. Chutneys were all rich and tasty. The peanut chutney here is particularly awesome. My only complaint was that Zalima is a nice song, but to hear it over and over for over an hour was a little much. read more

Most horrible service I have ever seen in a restaurant industry. They took my phone order at 8 pm and when I reached there at 8.45 pm they told it will get ready in 5 min. I went back at 9.15 pm, it looks like they didn't initiate the order itself. The staff did not apologize for this horrible service. Food wise, they use old oil for fried items which is not healthy and they use Ajinomoto (banned in USA) in their fried rice which is very harmful substance. read more

Last night all of us wanted good South Indian biriyani. So my husband was at the Toyota dealership in Woburn and saw Godavari. We have been all over Boston Salem Peabody and Beverly and all the biriyani they serve are pulao with green peas and green peppers and they smell awful. So my husband (he is white but an Indian food snob) goes in and as he was walking in someone was picking up biriyani. He smelled the good biriyani smell and decided that he was gonna get that for all of us. He was right. Their biriyani is AWESOME. Forget the shit biriyani in an around north shore and go to Godavari. We will be back to taste the rest of the good food soon. Now keep doing the good biriyani. read more

Our second trip to Godavari, and we really wanted to love it, but it left us feeling disappointed. First, let me start with the following premise: I believe that Godavari serves thoughtfully prepared food that is relatively authentic to its region. The ingredients are of a high quality, and are prepared with seeming care. But... We started with the "Godavari Special Veg Platter" for an appetizer, and it was unimpressive and WAY overpriced for what it was. As a former waiter, I would have been embarrassed to deliver that dish at that price. After specifying that only one of us could tolerate very spicy food, our main courses arrived with a toxic level of heat (I'm the heat lover, and had to take off my glasses because they were fogging so badly). We heard the table behind us make a similar complaint. Our waiter joked that we should consider ordering a more pedestrian dish like Chicken Tikka Masala next time--and while funny, it struck me as a little tone deaf. If the food is so spicy that one of us can't eat it... Finally, the atmosphere could use a little livening up. We ate on the early side, and the restaurant was painfully quiet. One of my favorite Indian restaurants , the buffet at Godavari offers a lot for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Do not come here based on old reviews. Those days are long gone. Their chef has changed multiple times over past couple of years. This place used to be really good but now long way below average whereas price is above average. Expecting average service is a sin at this place. Worship them if you get your food before an hour. You'll be considered insane if you expect appetizers to precede main course. Random delivery of food items guaranteed. Also, their service doesn't believe in checking back incase you need anything. Worst Service ! We had very bad dining experience. Went here for daughters birthday. Ordered 4 dishes and asked them to first get two only as table size is small.They got all 4 dishes at once. The food is good on weekends(maybe because lot of people flock in on weekends) and terrible some other days. The good/bad thing is that you cannot predict exactly when the food is good or bad. My wife and I love eating at Godavari and are there almost once a week for their amazing buffet. Whether you're a vegetarian or meat eater there are more than enough choices for everyone! We are amazed by the variety and variations that are prepared. The buffet is continually being replenished and there's no way to leave there no feeling completely satisfied. There are even more choices on Saturday and Sunday and the place is well-attended by the Indian community, testament to the special nature of the restaurant. We can't wait to return to see what's offered. I've noticed that some have rated the restaurant poorly and I think that it's a highly subjective and negative perspective. My wife and I are highly critical and love the food at Godavari. It's the best buffet we've ever had in any city in Canada and the U.S. Service is friendly and attentive and that's one of the reason why we return week after week. read more

Supposedly good with excellent reviews for taste. But their service is "very bad" 1. To start with, I waited around 10 mins for someone to help me seated though the restaurant was empty. This was on a Sunday night. 2. I ordered dosa. Which I got in 20 mins and got my sambhar in 40 mins by then my dosa was over. 3. My friend ordered 5 biriyanis and they got the first one after 40 mins and add an extra 20 mins for the remaining ones. 4. Oh yea..For the biriyanis you get only raitha and not the gravy that you are supposed to get with Biriyani. Reason ? : They don't have enough. Ask the question again, Sorry ! It's over. 5. Oops! I had heard good reviews about the food here, so thought will give it a try, even though it's a bit far from me, but when I reached more than an hour before the usual closing (which I checked on the website before going), the gentleman at the desk told us they running out of food and refused to accommodate us. He was not particularly welcoming and was in a rush to somewhat 'boot us out'. By then, all other restaurants also closed down so it became a bad evening Their food is probably good, but I am not risking another hour's drive to be disappointed again. Good food is one of things people go out to eat for (not the only one) There's a difference between good business and good hospitality and I hope the management is able to appreciate that soon. read more

Just been there today...they remodeled and all but quality is clearly suffering. The papad was like as if served in the same oil container in which it was fried, poori was also terrible and oily. The desserts were awesome except for custard that they don't get right. Yogurt rice is one of the best. I really hope they do not go down the path of decreasing quality like many restaurants and today's visit makes us less of a fan and will be a while before we come back and that is sad -:(. I really like Godavari. It's changed hands a few times and my former in laws (who are Indian) don't LOVE it, but I do and know it does the trick in a pinch. This is such a great restaurant! Their menu includes some unique dishes beyond the standards that have become all too common. A word of advice: their spicy is really spicy. I admit having had chaat at Rajbhog in Jackson Heights, Queens last night was not good preparation for coming here. But Wow! I was thoroughly unimpressed with the food. And not just a sevral things; across the board objectively bad. Biggest issues were that the food was not fresh. I ordered the South Indian food since they're marketed as 'Truly South Indian'. Sambar Idli 1/5. From someone who doesn't mind denser idlis, it was still too dense for me. Not rock hard, but wasn't fresh and was definitely not soft as a pillow. (And yes, I know they microwave these, but this was cooked many days, if not weeks ago). Sambar Vada 0/5. They were small and fried, but not much beyond that. Under seasoned, over salted, . Under cooked, doughy, center, fried crispy outside that got lost in the under cooked center. Chutneys could not undo the texture. 3 came in the order, 2.5 sent back. Hopefully I don't get sick. Masala Dosa 2/5. Dosa 3/5. Masala 1/5. Dosa was a bit greasy and thin. Couldn't get any sense of flavor when it's so crisply and thin. Masala, like the idli, was not fresh. I also had a taste of the flavorless uthappam (1/5) and overpoweringly hingy/asafoetiday samosa(0/5). When walking out, I looked at all the other tables and saw none had ordered south Indian. Maybe that's why my experience was different from others'. Still unacceptable to call this 'Truly South Indian'. I'm not even curious to try their North Indian menu. read more
