I want to start by saying thank you to Julia, Jonathen, and Joe for all helping me at throughout the process of getting my glasses. Upon completing the survey that they send prior to a fitting appointment, I came into Gogosha looking for a pair of glasses that I actually looked forward to putting on every day. I have a high Rx and in all my time buying glasses, I have never once taken into account how my finished lenses would look in the frames I decided on. This is where their team came in with their collective expertise to help! Julia was the one who helped with my initial consult and helped by dialing in the frames that worked well with my features. I had one pair in mind but she encouraged me to try as many as I liked which was much appreciated, especially considering the price point of some of them. After deciding on a pair, Jonathen helped by explaining the options I had when it came to the lenses i.e material used, coatings etc. Because of my high Rx, I often end up with a finished product I'm not entirely happy with because no optician had ever advised me on what would look best until I came here. He took the time to go over what lens material and placement would help have the finished product look like the demo, while minimizing the amount that the lens would peek out from the frame. Lastly, when picking up the frames (first time I've actually been excited to do so) I was extremely pleased with how it came out. Joe and Julia helped me this time around with getting the fit dialed in and making sure they were comfortable. I also want to thank Joe for taking the time to adjust my older glasses during this time too. Not only was he able to get my old frames comfortable, he explained that the reason some glasses tend to slip, leave marks on your nose, or hurt to wear for a long time, is because the weight of them is not distributed properly. Now I know that if there's any issues with comfort, an adjustment may be needed. From my experience I can confidently say that everyone at this store is great at what they do. Moving forward I don't think I'm going anywhere else whenever I need to update my prescription or am in the market for new frames. They are on the higher-end, but I learned more about picking the right glasses from the first 3 visits here at Gogosha, than in the 15 years going anywhere else. I'm quite startled that I hadn't reviewed Gogosha yet, because I had such an incredible experience there a few years back. Transformative, even. I'm guessing it was because at the time, I was living in two places at once, and I probably got caught up with other things. So here goes. I'd needed glasses for a few years and realized that the models from the chain store I'd been buying them from just weren't cutting it. And weren't really saying anything about me. I knew of Gogosha from when they had a studio on 3rd and remembered that they were now in Echo Park, right near me. So I made an appointment with Julia online, and sent her a few photos of my face and current glasses. When I arrived, Julia had selected a few trays of glasses, I'm guessing about 50 pairs in all. It is important to express the fact that they were ALL amazing. Each of them worked on my face, some more, some less, but I really loved it all, and I started to feel what was possible. Each frame had it's own story, and I felt a connection to the artists who designed and created each of them as well as the effort and taste it took to source them. Some wild, some more traditional, all of them handcrafted and unique. Wild colors, rich materials, shapes I never would have thought about but that somehow worked really well. Gogosha has specially-made, I'd call them Memphis (the Italian design movement, not the city) style carts which have a magnified mirror and a ledge for your phone. The process works like so: you try on a pair, document it, talk about it, and then move on. The person helping you can pull styles based on your comments while trying the frames on, and saving the photos helps you review what you tried on later, on your own time, to make more decisions and contemplate. My conversation with Julia reminded me of conversations I've had with other elevated creative collaborators: cinematographers, fashion designers, photographers, architects, interior decorators...the nuances come out and this is pure joy for me. I got the feeling that I had come to the right place and was surrounded by kindred spirits, a space where I could bring my unique perspective and be truly supported in expressing and elevating it through eyewear. In this case, I found some incredible frames from BAARS. The Merlin. They have magnetic hinges and are in a transparent light taupe color called Dune Beige. I get tons of compliments on them and love how I look in them in photos. One concept I walked away from the experience with is this: We're talking about your eyes and your face, which are directly connected to how you see the world and how the world sees you. And come to think of it, how you feel. So getting it right is critical. And Gogosha gets it about as right as is humanly possible. I recently returned to Gogosha, no appointment necessary, and was helped by Jonathen, to similar inspiring and incredible effect. One pair I tried on was even wrapped in leather. Amazing. Is this the best place to get glasses? I came away from my experience with Gogosha Optique thoroughly impressed with the wide and eclectic selection of frames that I don't see everywhere else. The store itself is so intelligently designed and aesthetically it has just the right balance of stimulus to comfort ratio to keep a customer engaged. The standout at Gogosha though is the people. Everyone working there is incredibly nice and cheerful. It's so welcoming that I found myself wondering if: (a) I was being pranked, or (b) there's Prozac in the water over in Echo Park. A note to people in a hurry: this may not be the place for you. Just go to Gogosha! I'm telling you that they are the experts at picking frames that match your face/personality and have mastered the technical end as well (lens quality, adjustments)! I've been going to them since (geeze, whenever they opened I think), and I am constantly impressed with all the staff, their selection, price ranges, and best of all- they suggest frames for you! I mean you can pick your own and thats fine, but if you are indecisive, have a history of buying frames that you don't like two days later, then try this place out. They constantly hand me frames I love that I never would have tried otherwise :) I have Kaiser insurance, and I made the mistake one time of getting my progressive lenses (and dumb frames) from Kaiser trying to save money. I went back to Gogosha, and asked why are my Kaiser lenses so wonky and the glasses I get from Gogosha so amazing? Apparently, there is a huge quality difference in the internal world of lens crafting... and I can see the difference! Literally. SO no more cutting corners on something I wear every day, all day! I first stumbled upon Gogosha Optique in roughly 2008. I had been wearing glasses since I was a teenager and although I wasn't in the market for a new pair, I walked in to check out this shop with a unique name. What I found was a stunning selection of frames and I learned that even more unique than the shop's name was the way the owner, Julia, paired me with my new glasses. Julia's personalized approach is amazing. She discreetly studies your face, and before you know it, a dozen or so beautifully crafted frames are before you, guaranteed to complement your features. That day, I walked out of the store with my first pair of Anne&Valentine's and never looked back. Over the years, my husband and I have purchased about a dozen pairs here, and we've never been disappointed by the experience. In the last few years, I feel like the team has really come together at Gogosha. You can make an appointment with anyone at the shop (I've had great interactions with Jonathen, Abby, Joe and Mimi), and you are guaranteed the same caring experience I had on my very first visit. Amazingly, even the cyber sessions work! As one can imagine, over the many years of coming to Gogosha, I have seen them address a variety of issues with my glasses: broken frames, scratched lenses, wrong prescriptions, getting used to progressive lenses, and I always felt taken care of. Now.... All of this comes at a hefty price tag, but I've tried the Warby Parkers of the world, and the cheap frames really don't last more than a few months for me, so ultimately, I feel like I'd end up paying the same. And don't get me started on the horrible progressive lenses cheaper places will give you... PROBLEMATIC. Places like this are what create class division and racist practices in Los Angeles. Places like this forget what neighborhood they are in and people who live here. I had an insurance flex card that I was going to buy nice frames with and thought I would try this place. I had to put a deposit to try on frames, which I was told would be credited back. I was told my frames would be charged to my flex card. Not what happened. The customer service is terrible. I was told I would get a call when ready. However, I had to call and follow up because it was way later that estimated time provided. I was told I would receive 100 deposit back, instead they deducted from flex card. I should have listened to my intuition about a place who makes you charge to walk in and try on frames. This is classist practice. There are many high end frame stores that do no practice this. Then they don't follow up with understanding how that 100 dollars impacts working class folks, regardless of "it doesn't expire" credit. Instead of going here, try inclusive places like L.A. Eyeworks for fun frames or Brand Optometry (Glendale) that carry many of the same brands. read more

Was recommended by a friend who owns several Gogosha frames. I first visited the Sunset location because it is closer to his residence and he was kind enough to go with me, help me assess numerous options, take photos, etc. I left having narrowed down my choices to two different frames, the information for which was put into my customer file. Phoned the next day and ordered the frames I'd decided upon out of the two. I was told I'd still have to be measured. I asked if I could do so at the 3rd Street location, since it was closer to *my* residence. No problem, I was told. The frames I'd chosen would be there waiting for me. I go to 3rd Street. Oops, they aren't there yet after all. Fortunately since my frames would be there by the end of the day, the owner Julia was gracious enough to volunteer bring them to my home nearby at the end of the workday and measure me there. I thought this was fabulous, and was already envisioning the glowing Yelp review I'd write. At my home that night, she readily acknowledged my frames still weren't there yet, but she brought ones that were similar enough to still measure me with. Okay, fair enough. We measure away. Fast forward to receiving the call that my glasses are ready. I go to pick them up on a Monday, and they weren't the correct glasses at all. Not the ones I ordered, and not even the alternate pair I hadn't ordered from my file. At this point my time has been wasted on three separate occasions. I'm told, "Oh we're so sorry, we don't know how the wrong ones were ordered, we'll put a rush order on these and we'll have them by Friday." Okay, fair enough. I get measured for a second time and wait for Friday. Friday comes around. I call. No glasses. Getting pretty livid now. Ask for a refund. Told they don't offer any refunds. Receive a whole spiel about "Oh, why would we have said Friday when quality glasses take time and we're doing everything we can and promise you'll absolutely love them when you get them!" Fine. I'll play along. Perhaps you'll just consider giving me a slight discount considering the less than ideal customer experience I'm experiencing? Manager Tatiana via phone: "Yes, we will consider that!" I finally get the correct pair on Tuesday, four days after the Friday I was promised following the original ordering mishap. Do I receive a discount? No, I do not. While I honestly love the correct glasses I finally received, unfortunately I will not be returning. read more

Watch out this store might look nice and I almost purchased a pair of glasses but asking for the model name I got a " sweetie we are not a show room"from that horrible "Julia " person .she wouldn't let me look at the glasses fearing that I would remember or write it down. Wow, I just had to write a review to counter the last two negatives! First of all, I'm a very shy, nerdy, goodie-two-shoes adjunct professor of English. I am in no-wise cool. I'm very paranoid about snobbery and being discounted. Rudeness and attitude has SO not been my experience at Gogosha; not by the owner nor her hand-picked knowledgeable, eye-wear-loving staff! I've bought 3 frames from Gogosha, first at their Silverlake store five years ago, then at their interim pop-up store before moving to their new home in Echo Park. Every time, I was welcomed graciously, and treated supportively and with respect. Reading over the negative reviews and scrutinizing them with the parsing, critical eye of an English prof, here's my impression. I've never mentioned this to the Gogosha staff, but I assume theft is a huge dilemma. When I was at the pop-up store, Julia attended me and had only one other staff member there when hordes of browsers suddenly flowed in. Many were teenagers, roughly handling frames on display. I would imagine it's tough to run a high-end boutique and decide that it's off-putting to lock your merchandise behind a glass case. So I don't blame the staff for being scrupulously watchful and careful. And I love their "fitting process." As other positive reviewers have noted, Julia and her posse have an eye for finding the perfect frames for your face. Even if you're a return customer, and I have been, and even if you "already know what you want," why not open your mind and let them spend a few moments introducing you to new styles? That is, after all, their business, to stay on top of trends. Why not respect their curatorial acumen? If you don't fancy what they show you, all right then, stick with the tried and true. Secondly, there are the reviewers who scoff at the price. Excuse me? I don't earn much standing on my feet, teaching. I'm cheap on my clothes, but have a policy that if my hair, shoes and glasses are first-rate, I'm well-groomed. The frames I've bought at Gogosha net me compliments every five minutes when I leave my apartment: the clerk at a Trader Joe's, folks in the elevator, on the street, in a store, at the doctor's, students on campus, you name it. I don't wear jewelry and I wear the frames daily, so it works out to cents a day to have head-turning style. Maybe you have a massive plasma TV on your wall; that's your priority. Came in on the wrong day of my appointment on accident and Abby still took a look at my frames I needed a repair on. She was super helpful and explained the scratch on my lenses couldn't be buffed out but to call the manufacturer and see if they have extra. She then made a repair on the bent joint of the frames, that I'm assuming was so minor she told me to just 'pay it forward.' So I'm here to just say these people are incredibly kind and deserve your business. I will definitely be back whenever I need new frames. read more

This is looooooooooong overdue, but I'm FINALLY reviewing this gloriously magical place!! I bought a lovely pair of glasses in January and it was on one of the best investments I've ever made. Firstly, when I came into the shop, Julia and Mary were VERY approachable and super patient. I've never been in such a high-class place and have the people be so kind to a random (me) off the rainy street. Julia and I picked out a bunch of glasses that we (mostly she, 'cause she's a pro) felt would suit me. Julie encourages you to explore and try new non-traditional styles. She rightly believes that the perfect pair of glasses--even if you wouldn't choose them yourself--would just melt into your face like butta. Even so, I stubbornly insisted on trying some outrageously sparkly ones and Julia obliged. They looked crazy and were ALL wrong for my face, but at least Julia didn't refuse me the opportunity to live out my fantasies! The Optique is small, but very open and bright with huge windows and mirrors, enabling me to see myself in both artificial and artificial light. Through a careful process of my indecisive elimination, Julia and Mary helped me choose the glasses of my dreams. Once I got my lens prescription faxed over to them, they made the frames to fit my face to perfection. They also taught me the right way to clean my lenses! If your frames get wonky, they'll also correct them for you. Oh...and another cute and personal detail--they sent me a handwritten letter thanking me for my business and inviting me to come back and see them! It's now April and I PROMISE, no matter where I go, people people of all ages and walks of life still comment on how much they love my glasses--They think they're just as amazing as I do. I think I've written down Gogosha Optique's contact info and Julia and Mary's names more than one hundred times. I REALLY hope they're getting business from it! At the time it was the only store location and it was the owner Juliet herself that helped with fitting the new frames. Her taste in frames was impeccable and spot on. I didn't end up having my lenses installed there due to insurance reasons but that was no problem. Their pre-sales support is every bit as good as the post-sales support and quite honestly, I find all of this griping about their sales team off-putting and over-done. Now after 8 years I am looking for a set of frames and naturally my first stop was Gogosha. I already have a couple of choices in mind thanks to the adept and skillful eyes of her capable sales staff. Are they cheap, no, but you get what you pay for. Extremely unsatisfied with the turnaround time. Went there to get my new pair of glasses. I gave them my doctors information. They said they would get back to me within a day or two. And let me know if they were able to proceed with my purchase. They never got back to me I had to call him two weeks later to find out what was going on. Finally winning saw their doctor they said I would be compensated for the wait time. So they put an express order on my purchase. They said express order should take about three days it's been one full week. I just called them today. And they said it would come tomorrow evening or the next day. Gogosha have the chicest frames. But they have the worst LA vibe of all time. 5 years ago I purchased a gorgeous pair of Anne et Valentin prescription sunnies. They cost like $1200 and took 2 months. Easily the worst retail experience I've ever had. After being pressured into a pair of glasses by the woman who owns the store, I realized 15 minutes after leaving that I didn't really like or want the glasses. I promptly drove back to the store and asked for a refund and to cancel my order (the frames had of course not yet been sent to the lab), but the owner refused to allow this, only offering an option for an exchange for something else. Abby was so kind and patient with me as I tried on nearly every pair of glasses in the store. I decided on a pair that they didn't have in the store at the moment and they ordered them in for me! The glasses are incredible and everything I could've imagined but to top it off a few days after picking up my glasses I received a hand written thank you note complete with some super cute doodles. How to not spend a ridiculous amount of money at Gogosha: Step 1: walk in when they are having a sale, recently if you bought two frames, first one is 25% off, second one is 50%. Step 2: when they try to sell you prescription lenses, politely decline by giving them some plausible excuse like " I need to go to the doc and get a new prescription" or "my cousin is an optician, has crappy frames for sale, but will put lenses in for free". Get the hell outta there before they try to convince you that you cannot buy better lenses anywhere else, that's bogus (I have an old pair from here, took good care of my glasses, but they are so scratched up, so much for high quality lenses from Gogosha...plus they didn't honor an up to date warranty because they work with a new lens manufacturer, sheesh). Step 3: Run, don't walk, to Hye Optic the next neighborhood over in Hollywood where you can get excellent high quality lenses for as low as 30 bucks!!! Check out their Yelp reviews, no joke. They had a decent amount of frames to choose from, except that's the thing...when I first walked in, I was a bit shocked, when I was TOLD upfront that the "rules" were that, they would be choosing my frames for me and despite if I was to like a certain frame, they absolutely wouldn't be selling it to me unless THEY approved that the frame looked good on me. The sales girl that helped me was nice. The shop itself is really hip and cute. The frames we "both" liked were about $495. Ok cool, I was into it, although when I was informed that there was a $295 charge to put my lens into the frames - I almost threw up a little. When I said I could just take them to my old eye dr., to have my lenses put in there, (for $160) she was less than thrilled and gave a little attitude. She said that they discouraged customers doing that b/c they couldn't be responsible for frames broken by someone else. (DUH) Cute shop had to check them out, since they carry the Kirk Originals frames. I might go back, but I might not. I didn't really like the fact she told me, she wouldn't sell me anything she didn't like on me, even if I was totally enamored with a pair. read more

I forced our party of four towards this spot (based on fellow yelper recommendations) so that I could peruse the frames. I was suprised that the service was so...controlling...though the adorable girl who assisted me was simply awesome. I guess I'm used to the lackadaisical atmosphere of places like Lenscrafters where you could try on a million frames before someone offers to help you - and then only after you can prove you have insurance. Alas, you're not really able to surreptitiously check yourself out in the mirror while snatching frames off the wall in this joint - as the frames are housed in deep roll-out cabinets like a secret sexy librarian cache. No matter. After staring deeply into my eyes for several minutes my sweet helpmate opened drawer after drawer and hand-selected about thirty frame types, styles, and sizes, then walked me a few feet over to the "viewing mirrors" where I sat on an uncomfortable stool and tried on frame after frame. I don't know who looked at each frame more critically - me, or the Gogosha Girl. It's nice to know you can arrive at this place solo, and not leave with some offending impulse buy. The Gogosha Girl won't let you. I narrowed my selection down to about ten frames, and then we graduated to the lifesize full-length mirror, where I tried on frame after frame while striking poses like 'Blue Steel' or 'coquettish spitfire' or 'dorky scientist' or 'frazzled mother of eight.' At some point during my eyeglasses catwalk extravaganza, my husband showed up at the doorstep with our giant dog in an attempt to approximate an estimated time of departure. Gogosha Girl, aka Miss Manners, invited both the husband AND the dog inside. Luckily the dog had other plans. I finally selected one pair of frames and while the rest of the frames were being placed back in their drawers of awesomeness, I discovered the WALL OF SEXY SUNGLASSES. Oh, sweet Jesus. I grabbed the first pair of frames that caught my eyes, put them on, and shazam: was transformed into an aloof, worldly, red-headed sex-bomb. Turns out that the daughter of the man who designed the glasses/sunglasses of a myriad of stylish stars of bygone eras has been going through her dad's archives and reissuing, in limited quantities, the signature styles. The sunglasses I was wearing were quadruple-riveted to ensure longevity, and made of the highest quality of materials. And coming in at $375, were a bit too rich for my blood.
