If you follow me on Yelp, you might know that one of my comfort foods is Cantonese-style Curry Chicken. It doesn't sound that difficult to find on a menu. I can make it myself if I feel motivated. But what's the fun in that? Lately, I've had difficulty locating my fav meal. Chefs come and go. Some versions don't taste authentically Cantonese. Gold Coin in Slingerlands bills itself as a Cantonese restaurant. So I placed a takeout order. I also ordered Roast Pork Mei Fun. It was very good curry. There were even some red pepper flakes for spiciness. It tasted fresh, definitely made-to-order. The curry dish was actually a healthier version of my old favorite. I'm accustomed to a thicker curry sauce with chucks of curry covered potatoes. In this case, I think change is good. I liked the Roast Pork Mei Fun, too. The thin rice noodles which are called, Mei Fun, were just slightly overcooked. That's easy to do since I wasn't dining in and the noodles still had to make the drive back to my home. In addition to roast pork, the order was packed with veggies including broccoli and snow peas. It's a nice looking restaurant. The interior is prettier in person. Good for entertaining. I'm glad I've found another place for curry chicken. The service was good. The manager offered to get the orders out immediately but I let him know that it was a bit of a drive for me to get there. I also asked him not to include utensils or condiment packets. I have utensils at home and with most authentic Chinese foods, I don't need more condiments. This restaurant might offer fortune cookies to appease some customers. but I think the manager understood that I wouldn't want them. Fortune cookies are not authentic Chinese. They were created in the USA. People who complain when they don't get fortune cookies and take off stars over it sound racist to me. read more

The owner is consistently upbeat and friendly and always gives us a warm greeting. I love the chicken Lo Mein and my wife goes for the shrimp and broccoli. However tonight my wife went for a dish called Buddha's Delight - vegetarian - which she said was absolutely fantastic. Loaded with succulent vegetables and tofu. Each time we have dined here the service has been extremely prompt and the food excellent. Definitely give this establishment a try. read more

Best Chinese food in town. I had the house special with rice noodles pork chicken and vegetables. You can get a spicy curry or have it without. It's delicious both ways. Customer service is excellent family owned business. Hot tea and wonton soup all delicious. read more

Your customer service and simple manners are atrocious. My sister went to your restaurant today to order a gluten free meal and after politely telling staff the dish lacked flavor, the gentlemen said "i don't need your business, don't come back to my restaurant". Not sure if this is the owner, a host, or just a waiter. Regardless of who it is, you should be ashamed of not only your customer service skills but your manners and the way you spoke to another person. After my father called to complain about this incident being that my sister is a rather timid person and was quite upset and frustrated, the man did in fact confirm that he responded to her in that exact way. I was seated and given tea and water. In the process of ordering my dinner with the slovenly dressed owner, I pointed out two discrepancies between the dirty menu I was given and the one posted on his website, both being relevant to my order. It was then he snatched the menu from my hands, told me he didn't need my business and to go somewhere I was welcome, adding that it was people like me that ruin his neighborhood. Then repeating 'bye-bye' over and over whilst maniacally waving his hand in the fashion of an eight-year-old. At that moment I was the only customer on premises. While this restaurant had decent food that was certainly better than your typical primarily take out Chinese "restaurants", I found it wasn't a big enough improvement to justify the price difference. I suddenly was having company with little notice and it was a work night: I decided to order Chinese. Looking for something nearby I remembered this restaurant being near where I buy groceries and thought I'd give it a try. The food actually arrived early; I tipped the driver and he attempted to refuse the tip noting that I'd paid one on line (I was more than impressed by his integrity and pressed the money into his hand anyway as I wanted him to get it, not the restaurant.) Pedestrian Chinese food; overall good, though I strongly recommend against the steamed vegetable pot stickers which were all stuck together and the ingredients and flavor were really poor. The Yelp menu was confusing, so I ended up with three "dinners" and then sides that I didn't need, explaining the three (unremarkable) egg rolls that I didn't think I'd ordered. This is a quiet,charming place with beautiful Asian music, very attentive waiter who brings out teapot and noodles with sauces. The General Tsao chicken was filled with veggies and tasted delicious. The wonton was good and I enjoyed the fried rice made with sprouts! Glad I tried it! Will be back! Great location for me between clients. read more

Hi, this is one of the better Chinese restaurants I've tried in the area. A bit pricy as was mentioned on other reviews, but that's ok as long as the food meets expectations. We ordered combos. The rice was sweet and tasty. Not dark. Egg rolls were not greasy. I always order the dumplings just to see if it's a pile of thick dough, which tells me to stay away, but they were tasty with nice light sauce. The shredded pork combo my son had was good, but way too many vegetables. That's why I gave 4 stars. General Tao was good and not too heavy. I will order again. read more

This was a fantastic find! It's located inconspicuously next to a gas station and it really doesn't look like much from the outside. However, the inside of the restaurant is very nice and the decor is very inviting. The menu is typical Chinese food, but it's the quality of the food that truly stands out. We got take-out a few weeks back and we were blown away. The General Tso's chicken was all white meat and very crispy in a spicy, delicious sauce; it didn't have that super sweet, thick sauce that you typically find and I was very, very satisfied with my meal. The pork lo mein was delicious as well and the noodles were cooked perfectly. An added bonus - we got two regular fortune cookies and one chocolate one too! Never in a million years did I think I'd find some of the best take-out Chinese I've ever had in my life in little Slingerlands, NY. The food was amazing, the prices were great and on par with ordinary take-out Chinese, and the portions were extremely generous. Bottom line - you get quality food at a great price here. Ordered delivery thru Door Dash. made condiment requests, very simple. Specifically asked that it be checked before delivery, as mistakes had been made in the past by other companies. Food arrived, condiments missing, no utensils or napkins. Called the restaurant, who said they never see those requests????? So you use a service that makes your customers unheard and unhappy? Nothing could be done about it, basically was hung up on by restaurant staff member. Food is mediocre, prices high for what you get. Don't expecting any dipping sauce for crab rangoons. Or any decent dried rice, let alone choice of rice. Bottom line, look for a place that produces quality food and cares about their customers. Gold Coin is not one of them. read more

Four stars, for what it is. Gold Coin is not authentic Chinese food. Don't go there and expect Shining Rainbow or Ala Shanghai. Gold Coin is the locally owned solution to PF Changs. It's Americanized Chinese food in a swanky, clean sit down restaurant with a decent cocktail and wine list. Service is always professional and quick. The menu is not imaginative, but comforting in that it's familiar. What to get? We tend to get the standards but the beef and broccoli is particularly good. It had a distinct ginger flavor that many brown Chinese sauces miss. Orange beef is also great. The fried rice is really the star of the place: real rice, fried with egg and pork. It's not yellow rice, but real and actual fried rice. So why four stars for a restaurant every town in America has? First, the staff is friendly and over the past two years made a true effort to know us. It's always very clean. Staff is accommodating as well. They have in the past given us lunch sized portions for dinner... And charged us for only the smaller portion. They have created combo plates for things not on the combo menu. This place is not your usual dingy chinese take out joint. The decor is very simple and clean. A nice restaurant for a nice quiet sit-down chinese dinner. Service is quick and attentive, tea and noodles with duck sauce and hot mustard are plentiful. My only gripe about this place would be the food. Its not that the food is bad per se, but it is watered down. I could hardly taste any garlic-y-ness in my shrimp with broccoli and garlic sauce. It was more sweet & sour than spicy as I would've liked. Way too tangy. Their vegetables are fresh and not wilted, and you can tell the fried rice on the side is prepared in-house unlike some other take-out places. Man, I am so close to giving this place two stars. If it was a takeout only place, that would be fine. That's the quality of the food, basically. This is the kind of place where I need not fear the hot pepper icon. I ordered what sounded like the hottest thing on the menu (chicken with hot pepper sauce and peanuts), and it was still only mild. Flavor was okay. Companion did not like her oily eggplant and garlic dish at all. The leftovers were helped with garlic chile sauce and fish sauce at home. Other dishes at the table included some very doughy vegetable dumplings. What annoys me most is that this is a sit-down restaurant. It's actually a nice place inside. Being used to Chinese restaurants that are old and run down I was impressed by Gold Coin's appearance. It is in a nice little building near the Price Chopper shopping plaza. The interior is well decorated and always clean. They play classical sounding Chinese music, but you usually can barely hear it. They offer bar, table, and booth seating (which is very comfy). The food really isn't anything special, I would say it is one step above the usual Chinese take out. It is plated nicely, but consists of the same quality of ingredients you would normally find. Not to mention that most of the offerings are heavy due to their fried and/or syrupy nature. I like to order the combo deals that come with an entree plus soup. The wonton soup is always tasty, but hard to eat with a spoon. I really appreciate that they automatically serve tea and give each table its own kettle. Plus they give you some deep fried crunchy things to snack on while waiting for your dinner. The service is usually fast and fairly attentive. They have a bar, however, on the one occasion that I ordered a drink the waiter acted strangely and was very insulting. Not to mention that they didn't know how to make a white Russian which is an IBA Official Cocktail, duh. They seemed to be confused about their campy tropical drinks listed right on the menu as well. Gold Coin is a nice retreat from the usual riffraff of super Americanized Chinese restaurants. The food is always solid, but the more I come here the less I like it. I wish they would offer some more authentic choices not to mention chopsticks, they don't even try to encourage people to try their culture. I quite like Gold Coin. I hadn't been in there in a few years so today was the first time I saw the new interior. It's quite lovely and bright and much different than most Chinese restaurants. It's got cool light fixtures and it's almost classy rather than cheesy. But they still maintain the Chinese restaurant feel with certain touches, which I appreciated a lot. My vegetable bean curd soup was delicious and was just the sort of simple soup I needed for my cold/sinusitis. My friend and I also shared a couple of tasty chicken and vegetable dishes. Service was quick, efficient and extremely friendly. Bathrooms were bright and clean. The little descriptions of the tiki drinks on the cocktail menu are pretty amusing too. My main complaints are that you don't automatically get chopsticks unless you ask for them, and that the prices are a little high. Basically, it's pretty anglicized, which is about what I'd expect for a sit-down Chinese place in Delmar. read more

While I give the Gold Coin three stars, keep in mind that it's still my go-to Chinese place in the Albany area. The current building is the result of a massive renovation that classed the place up and made it feel more Chinese and less non-descript suburban bar. Service continues to be fast for both dining in and take-out. The original owner, Conrad Kung, lives locally and still knows pretty much every regular by name. The food, while still very solid Chinese for a small market like Albany, isn't quite as good as it used to be. I like the Lo Mein, and it seems like the mix is too heavy on the onions and too light on the mushrooms and meat any more. The Pu Pu Platter has also changed relatively recently, and I don't like the offerings as much as the old Pu Pu platter. But the Won Ton soup remains tops. read more

I am a regular at Gold Coin. My family and I eat there probably about once a week. The ambience at Gold Coin is welcoming and comfortable. The building was remodeled a few years ago, and the interior is warm and pleasant. Bathrooms, bar and dining room are always impeccably clean and well maintained. The employees are very friendly and attentive, and very knowledgeable about the menu. Service is always fast, but never rushed. The menu contains many standard american-chinese menu items, and they have recently started having dinner and appetizer specials. I tend to want things that aren't on the menu, and the kitchen has always been amazingly accommodating, creating tasty fresh dishes for me. The dumplings are house made, and are among the best to be had in the area, particularly the hong-kong dumplings they've had as a special recently. There's something very comforting about going to Gold Coin. When I want to go out and know for a fact that I'm going to have a pleasant experience, Gold Coin is where I head.
