I decided to stop by Tomo Asian Bistro on New Scotland Road after noticing how much this area has grown with new restaurants popping up nearby. I'm glad I did because this place turned out to be a hidden gem. The restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere that's clean, cozy, and perfect for either a casual lunch or dinner with friends. The service was friendly, and the sake was the perfect complement to the meal. I ordered the Vegetable Pad Thai and a Cucumber Roll, while my friend chose the General Tso's Chicken. If I'm being completely honest, my friend's dish stole the show. The chicken was perfectly crispy, coated in a flavorful sauce with just the right balance of sweet and savory, and paired wonderfully with the rice and broccoli. My Vegetable Pad Thai was fresh and satisfying, but I would have loved just a little more sauce to really bring all the flavors together. The Cucumber Roll was light, refreshing, and a nice contrast to the richer entrées. Overall, this was a great dining experience. Between the inviting atmosphere, flavorful food, and relaxing vibe, Tomo Asian Bistro is definitely worth checking out if you're in the Slingerlands area. I'll absolutely be back to explore more of the menu. read more

Very disappointed. We have been there many times and it's been great. We went there over the weekend for our anniversary. I ordered a spicy salmon roll. I had to spit it out. It was disgusting. I also ordered a shrimp tempura roll. That was amazing. It was so good and I ordered an Eel avocado roll. That was so so not as good as it always is. My wife ordered general.tsos and it was nowhere near a good as it always is. The sauce tasted bad. Maybe they have a new chef I don't know but it's not like it's been for years. I don't know if we'll be back. Very disappointed. Might start going back to the Asian tea House. It's always been good there. read more

My adult son and I ate here and I want to update my review, The server was extremely knowledgeable. We had a question about gluten he was not sure about and he brought over another employee who had expert knowledge about the ingredients and gluten free items..I have celiac disease and I felt very confident eating here. We ordered a platter with like 40 pieces of sushi for a very reasonable price. We were so full we didn't order dessert. Our waiter continuously filled our water glasses and never made me feel like a burden asking questions. Excellent food and service! read more

Haven't been in the area for a couple of years, but was great to see Tomo still going strong! Having come regularly for many years when I was in town more regularly and always had a fab meal it was so nice to see the same familiar faces behind the counters making the same quality sushi and food! This is, perhaps, my most frequented sushi/takeout place. Yet somehow I have no pictures because I always have to dig in so quickly! We love ordering on Mondays (10 rolls for $40) which is a crazy deal! The sushi is always fresh and so yummy. My 2 and 4 year old love sushi night so that's obviously a good sign. The rolls are the perfect size; you can fit 1 piece of a roll as 1 bite without looking like a slob haha! We've also tried the agedashi tofu, Hot and sour soup, shrimp shumai, lo main and multiple other items and have loved every one. Specifically during Covid they setup a take out window right at their door for safety which I appreciated. Also, when I had my first baby who was a newborn in the car, they brought my pickup order out to the car for me as a courtesy. Highly recommend this restaurant! read more

This is our go to sushi spot. Never had a bad meal there. They're super friendly and know our drink orders and appetizer order-by heart. The firecracker is the best appetizer on the menu‼ The General Tso is my husband's go to. Fried to perfection every time. I love their Mongolian beef, their incredible roll is amazing. Best food and experience we've had in a while! Warm saki in stoneware pitcher and tiny cup. Thai noodles with cashews, basil, and beef was De-lish! Noodles right texture, cashews were crisp, beef was ample and good. The broccoli and beef was the best ever, and even the rice was good. The owners are very friendly and in the restaurant! Customer service needs improvement. Just stopped by to pick up my order, and decided to take a look inside. I thought to myself this is a nice setting and I can't wait to come back with friends or on a date. A gentlemen was ahead of me and the lady at the checkout counter not only greeted him, but talked about her young daughter's (standing next to her) piano recital. When it was my turn in line, "What's the phone number for you???" Umm... in my head I'm thinking a "Hello" would've been nice just as I said hello to her. I took myself out for my birthday. At Tomo Asian Bistro, I ordered the most elaborate sashimi/ sushi combo meal for one that I've ever had in my life! The sushi chefs there are nothing short of amazing! The fish was very fresh and the presentation was spectacular! Check out my photos. I applied a Groupon towards the meal. I would have gladly splurged on this $23 meal even without the discount. The Capital Region has some great Asian restaurants. The sashimi/ sushi here is definitely among the very best! The wait staff here is equally awesome. My server was a young man, who was extremely well-mannered, friendly and helpful. He helped me process my Groupon in a flash. No issues. I wish I could tell you about the hot meals offered, but I haven't gotten past the sushi bar yet! Lol. There was a lot of food. My server packed up what I couldn't finish, so I could take it home. He displayed it beautifully. With the money saved from using a Groupon, I made sure to tip the sushi chefs and waiter well. I recommend this place! read more

Something named "Asian" is normally the kiss of death for me, just like I would never go to a restaurant featuring "European" food. But, one evening, wanting Chinese food and finding that most local Chinese places no longer deliver or require that you call for delivery, I gave this a shot since it's near my house. I've ordered from here twice now, and they actually do produce great Chinese as well as Japanese food. And, having lived on the west coast where both are excellent I usually am not wowed about the Chinese/Japanese food I have found here. The sushi and sashimi are quite good; the teriyaki is quite good; the tempura is excellent. The steamed dumplings are excellent. The egg rolls...not so great. One evening ordering primarily Chinese food we got miso soup (apparently it was the soup of the day and I considered it an unexpected bonus as I love miso soup.) Another order, primarily Japanese, arrived with hot and sour soup (it was great.) Delivery is excellent with everything well packaged. This is clearly a very professional and very well run restaurant. It's a keeper. read more

I stopped into this dimly lit restaurant, at the far end of a supermarket plaza, for sushi. Not for take-out, not for the fruity drinks, and not for any of the other generic Asian food. Just sushi. I was underwhelmed. As I sat at the sushi bar (photo) for my late lunch, I noticed the special board advertised salmon toro, which I thought strange. Most other local restaurants, when they advertise toro, they mean either otoro or chutoro, cut from fatty tuna, not salmon. I immediately thought, "Of course we have steak. Salisbury Steak." I decided to pass on the up-sell of the most nonthreatening type of sushi served in Slingerlands. I ordered a couple of rolls and a few nigiri, nothing too fancy, just to sample the basics before investigating in their menu of futomaki with strange non-Asian names. The servers and the sushi chef were pleasant enough, and started me with a quickly forgettable soup and salad. As the main arrived, I smiled at the simple plating (photo). Instead a mixture of shredded diakon or flowers or leaves, the chef simply used the eel sauce to draw a quick picture of palm trees around the sushi. Almost pulled it off - it's inexpensive but requires a little talent - so, B+ for effort. The sushi itself needed a little work. The crunchy spicy salmon wasn't labeled as crunchy, and not very spicy either, despite the little hot pepper logo on the menu. As to spices, none of the nigiri had wasabi added atop the rice, under the fish. The most generic of sushi, the salmon nigiri, was, as expected, bland and while tasting fresh, not the least bit firm. And the tamago was just an egg custard, not rolled grilled egg. I had hoped for more, seeing as the crowds were at an almost absolute minimum, and there were only a couple tickets for the chefs. Japanese food is probably my favorite food to eat. I live off New Scotland Ave in Albany and we have 2 Japanese restaurants near us who's food used to be phenomenal but it seems quality has gone down some. I have eaten from Tomo a couple of times and I do enjoy their food. It is consistently good. today I ordered the Spicy Tuna Tartar. It was delicious. My only complaint is it was on the smaller side for the price comparable to another Japanese place I frequent with exception food. I also got the chicken Satay and I must say Tomo does it better than anyone in my area or that I have even had from anywhere else. I love the sauce, just wish it was a little thicker. It always seems a little too loose but the flavor is fabulous. Thanks for a good lunch. read more

Ordered takeout and received it within an hour on a Sunday night. The drunken noodles with chicken were just ok. I would've liked them to have more spices. The general tso's chicken was delicious as were the pork dumplings and eel and avocado roll. Prices were just right and the menu is extensive with Japanese, Thai and Chinese food options. Best sushi in the area, I typically order take out for lunch from my job. It's always quick and the sushi is also fresh. The owner sue is so kind and personable. She makes sure the service in the restaurant is great. My favorite rolls are the incredible roll and the monkey roll, both are shrimp tempura with avocado but different toppings on top. They also have a sushi lunch special which is 3 rolls for $11 you can't beat it. You can choose from over 20 different rolls. Another favorite of mine is the dinosaur egg, it's an appetizer, it is an avocado stuffed with spicy tuna and then deep fried tempura with sauces on top, it's soooo good! A must try! read more

They had a beautiful sushi bar, but, we didn't try that this trip. The staff was attentive and friendly. We got there at about 9:30 on a Monday night and there wasn't another soul in the place but those who worked there. The staff was perfect, not too hover-y nor too distant. Good with refills of drinks. I'd gush more about the food, but, really, go try it yourself. Patience and Zena: officially now in the same sentence, but only this once. Gingerly I turned over a few grungy menus and ordered hot tea, which came quickly but not with sugar and a spoon, so I asked again, and waited, and asked again, and got what I wanted but by now the tea was lukewarm, but then again, so was the next refill. The Hot and Sour Soup ($2.50) needed more sour so I asked for extra vinegar, which made a big difference - lots of variety (mushrooms, tofu, scallions, etc.) with a gentle hit of heat, and a generous serving at that. I'm sure by this time the server, who was working the whole busy dining room solo, must have found me quite annoying. Most people do, but I digress. Now where was I. Right - food. On Tuesday you get (3) rolls for $10 - a real deal. The Spicy Salmon, California and Tuna rolls ended up being a lot of food, and mostly very tasty. True to form, and because I'm into heat, I had to ask for more wasabi. FF loved her Thai Curry with Beef ($11) - baby corn, mushrooms, snow peas, carrots, water chestnuts - nice variety, nice sauce - nice balance of heat and sweet and salty. Jaguar enjoyed her Panang Curry with Beef ($12), a different curry, lots of broccoli, peppers, and coconut. Both were presented in large bowls - very attractive. Generally, I've found this place to be ok, mostly mediocre with a few marginal good dishes. Tonight, they gave me what was, without exaggeration, the worst lo mein I have ever eaten. The shrimp was mushy and definitely not cleaned. The noodles matched the texture of the shrimp and tasted off. It legitimately made me wonder if they'd served me some one else's leftovers. read more
