Placing takeout order by phone went well as did pickup. Great location on upper Union Street in Schenectady with parking in front. Nice looking front of restaurant. However, upon entering, the first thing I noticed was each of the seat cushions in the booths was torn and in need of serious repairs. There were also tables and chairs. I thought maybe the food will be good. Ordered 2 luncheon specials at $7.95 each which is less expensive than most comparable places. --Sesame Chicken --Shrimp in Garlic Sauce, both with Wonton Soup - -Plus a pint of Hot and Sour Soup The Sesame Chicken had a flavorful sauce, but it was mostly inedible because of the hard, chewy over fried pieces of skin. There was little chicken meat. The fried rice and broccoli were okay. Chicken was put in garbage. 4 Stars Yes! Shrimp lunch was very good. The shrimp were LARGE and tender, not overcooked. The sauce was good. Wonton Soup was typical. But the Hot and Sour Soup was a surprise! I like it and order it often, and I have never had a version so dark and inedible. Not only was it visually unappealing, it was too salty and had no mushrooms or tofu. I could not eat more than a taste. See Photo. First and last time ordering from here. First time ordering, the Hunan Chicken was good, Szechuan Dumplings with Peanutbutter Sauce were... eh, either to much peanutbutter or it sat for awhile and got to thick, the food was okay. The order came somewhat on time. For a delivery over $24 I don't know if I'd say for what I paid was so much worth it. Maybe if I got something else it would of been better. read more

I have been in search of a "Garlic Chicken dish that apparently has gone the way of dinosaurs. Once upon a time thedish was garnished and would include little mushrooms, water, chestnuts, and tiny ears of corn. Now, green peppers, onions, slivers of carrots, and slivers of chicken. A mediocre dish at best. For years, my wife and I used to get the dish at New China Restaurant in the Sheridan Plaza. Unfortunately, they've also gone the way the dinosaur. I suspect the cost-cutting avenue has affected all garlic chicken recipes. read more

I've been going to this Chinese restaurant for about four years. On my most recent purchase I decided to try a new dish to break the repetition. That dish was the #25 pork with preserved mustard and green soup. It sounded exotic and interesting. After I got it home from the restaurant and opened the container to transfer it to a bowl, I discovered that the pork had Chinese news paper integrated in to the meat. Shocked, I jumped into the car and returned to the restaurant to see how they'd fix the issue. I can forgive the mistake, but that only happens after acknowledging it! The cashier made the refund and alerted the manager. The manager stayed in back and told his staff to get rid of me. Then the cashier went in back again to let him know that I was still there. So another employee came out to see what the problem was. I showed him the news paper and he was shocked as well. He went in back and came back out a few minutes later with the manager behind him. He took a look and said it was pork. Then I made him take a second look and said "newspaper" again. Then he looked at the menu as if the description would indicate "might contain newspaper". But alas it did not. He turned around to go back to the kitchen and I said that's it? He went back to the newspaper pork and said "okay" perhaps acknowledging the error. Not the case... I blurted that I wasn't going to order from here ever again. All of a sudden, his English was perfect, and he ran back and grabbed two cans of soda. And gave them to me. As if two cans of Pepsi will calm me down enough to make me leave. All I wanted was an apology! I can forgive culinary error. Especially if it was a supplier of Chinese pork who left a newspaper stuck to the pork while in transit. A believable scenario where the restaurant is innocent of any fault. At Least acknowledge it to make the customer feel at ease about almost eating newspaper. I couldn't eat the rest of my food that night without checking each piece. (Yeah, I still ate the food) The reason for two stars is because the food is actually tasty and affordable and the staff were polite and friendly. The manager or owner might have had a language barrier keeping him from sympathizing or a culture clash of accepting less than perfect food being served to other humans. If that's the case, don't eat here. Because where does it stop? Today, newspaper. Tomorrow, toenail? Booger? Bandage? Rodent? Feces? Rodent feces? I give every restaurant a chance until they prove to me that they aren't worthy of my patronage. I have a high tolerance for low quality. I even forgive mistakes. I can't forgive rude management who can't see an obvious error and make it right. If you can't handle the public sending food back, perhaps you shouldn't own or manage a restaurant. If you can't keep the food free of garbage, then you definitely shouldn't own or manage a restaurant. The bar is set low for Chinese takeout. You fell short tonight. read more

I stopped at Hunan Wok for Chinese takeout recently. This street front Chinese restaurant on Upper Union Street offers takeout service and full service dining. The takeout counter/register is conveniently next to the front door with chairs for waiting. The menu offerings consist of the standard Chinese dishes including Cantonese, Hunan, and Szechuan specialties. A healthy dietary menu with steamed dishes and white rice are offered too. Most items on the menu are under $10. 37 Luncheon Specials ($4.95-$6.05/served Mon-Sat until 3PM) include entree, choice of rice and choice of soup, egg roll, or soda. 24 Special Combination Dinners ($6.95-$7.65) served with pork fried rice and egg roll are also offered. I ordered the L14 Shrimp With Garlic Sauce ($5.65 plus tax) served with pork fried rice and hot & sour soup. The food was hot and ready to go in under 10 minutes, main dish & pork fried rice packed into a round plastic microwavable container, soup in the standard clear plastic container. The main dish was decent, which consisted of a few big tender shrimp (cleaned), a mix of fresh vegetables (snow peas, carrot, onions, peppers, broccoli), bamboo in a spicy very sweet red garlic sauce. The fried rice was okay and generic, which had light colored soft rice with peas, carrots, and roast pork pieces. The hot & sour soup was quite good, which had egg, bean curd, mushrooms, fungi, bamboo, peppers, & vegetables in a medium spicy broth. Overall, the food here was decent for the most part. I would return here again for reasonably priced Chinese takeout if I'm hungry and happen to be in the immediate area. DELIVERY: $12 minimum read more

This seems to be mostly a takeout place, but we ate in on our visit some weeks ago, and have since tried the takeout. On both occasions the food was bland and a bit overcooked, which is pretty much what we expect to get from Chinese-style American takeout (or American-style Chinese takeout, if you prefer). I can't say we'll be going back for the speical qualities of the food per se, but it wasn't terrible, either, so since we're in the neighborhood if we want to walk out for Chinese-ish sit-down, we'll be back. I do think there are better take-out options within 5 minutes' drive, though. When we were there to dine-in, we were the only folks in the joint. We had quiet, attentive service, nothing special but we did not feel ignored to the exclusion of the takeout customers. The moo shu was "standard issue", the pancakes unremarkable. The shrimp was adequate, not too gloopy. Our baseline comparison dish for the kids, orange chicken, was sufficiently orangey enough but of course quite sweet. No brown rice option, though. This place is not what it used to be from the owners 10 years ago. The fried chicken wings that I had gotten after 15 mins of calling for pick up. They were cold and soggy. I've eaten at eight of the eat in or take out Chinese restaurants here in this area and frankly they all sucked. Greasy, flabby food with little or no taste or off flavor tastes. This is a cut above for here. It is fresh and tasty, but not in your face great. I've eaten here ten to twenty times and never been upset or disappointed. It's legit middle of the road Chinese that delivers. It's not some children playing at making food. But it's also not brilliantly fresh and perfectly flavored either. I find that they have too much sauce and are slightly too sweet. But, it's the only Chinese food I eat in this area. I may go to Albany and see what they have, but for here, this is it for me. read more

Hunan Wok has had several ownership changes in the last ten years and has finally found a winner. It has been my favorite place for a late lunch (before 3 pm) special when I want to enjoy solitary time in an otherwise busy day. For under $7 I enjoy a hot, fresh and delicious meal that includes a steaming bowl of the best hot and sour soup in the area, brown rice and a spicy tofu and broccoli dish they gladly create for me. They seem to have a busy takeout and delivery service but I've also seen other dine in customers while I'm enjoying my meal there. I've read the past reviews and hope unhappy customers will give Hunan Wok another chance. read more

I WAS a loyal customer to Hunan Wok for a little over 3 years now. The food used to be good but lately it's been disgusting and disappointing. Today I ordered Szechuan Dumplings and they gave me dumplings with peanut butter sauce. I called to tell them they made a mistake on my order but they said "No, That's how we make them." Since when does Szechuan sauce consist of peanut butter?? I was revolted. It didn't say anything on the menu about peanut butter sauce on top of the Szechuan dumplings. I wasted $6.00 but I gained the knowledge to not go back to Hunan Wok. All of our food was cold and the side of sweet and sour sauce I ordered spilled inside the bag and got all over the rest of the food. Upset is an understatement. Do not order from here. I always order ahead when I come here and my order is always ready in 20 minutes (or less) I order enough for 7 people every time to as for that there are 7 people in my family! This food is very filling and very good but super expensive! Every time I go it's $80 and most of the people in my house are under 10! That's about $12 per person per meal. That's so overpriced for Chinese food! I think each meal should be lowered $2-$4! Another good thing about Hunan wok is that it's open really late if you want a midnight snack! But sadly, the parking here also sucks! There is a little strip for a dance studio,hair salon,CBD,other shops, and Hunan Wok! This "parking lot" probably only has about 20 spaces! FOR UNION STREET!! That's also very stupid!! Also, the owners are great here! I came here for dinner on a weekend and was immediately greeted by two very young girls who didn't seem old enough to be working which was off-putting. The young girls did everything up front (hostessing, answering phones and waitressing), but their service was not good since they were crouched down behind the counter most of the time and didn't pay the tables much attention. The food is mediocre. I signed up for their online ordering service so that I can conveniently order food at Hunan Wok on Union Street. But when I went to pick up my order 30 minutes later, which is more than enough time for them to finish my order, it was still not ready. My family owns Chinese restaurants, I know how long it takes to complete a small order and it's not 45 minutes! My order wasn't even put in, I saw the panic in the woman's face when the girl gave her my ticket. The girl at the counter gave me an excuse and told me that my ticket got lost because they got "busy". There was one family of 5 seated in the restaurant, with 2 other orders on the table waiting to be picked up. I'd hardly consider this "busy". This restaurant is never busy. Not only do I not appreciate being lied to straight to my face, which was pretty obvious, but I sat and waited another 15 minutes waiting for my order. read more
