Snowflake beef. About $20/lb

Prices have gone up. I paid $29 and some change for 1.5lbs of snowflake beef today (something like $20/lb). Still, it's one of the best (maybe the best) place for cut-to-order hot pot beef. I think they have other meats too. I saw a patron before me order two "yellow hair chicken" and overheard that they were $14 each. I think they come head and feet still attached and they will cut it up how you like as well (I saw the lady ordering it ask for the feed to be cut off, toes trimmed, skin removed, etc.) I can get snowflake beef closer to me on Irving but I like supporting this shop since they cut the pieces large.

Snowflake Beef, the "Kobe Beef of China"!

Chinatown's BEST Kept Secret! SHHHHH... As an avid coin collector, my dad would be sorely disappointed if he walked into Gold Coin Trading to find they don't sell coins but instead sell my ultimate fav...MEAT! Yes, I'm quite the Carniwhore. What better way to warm up in this cold SF than with shabu/hotpot at home which is exactly what my friends and I decided to do for our monthly get-together dinner on Thursday. As a disclaimer, though I've passed by numerous times, I never set foot into Gold Coin Trading, a living room sized market that sells meat and dry foods. My friend did all the shopping. Thanks, Linda! Among the various meats Gold Coin Trading sells, their crown jewel is the Snowflake Beef aka the "Kobe Beef of China" which has very similar marbling to the real deal. It was the first time that I've ever heard of Snowflake Beef so hungry for more information I tried to do some research on it. Unfortunately, I only found one article online: http://www.china-haoyue.com/english/jszl.php?ce=128. The "snowflake" marbling in the beef is created with fat deposition in the muscle making the beef more flavorful, juicy, and tender. At just $12/lb, you will get beautifully marbled slice-to-order Snowflake Beef for shabu/hotpot (American Kobe is currently about $100/lb). http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/G-NgB1MxeFQOeo9oAmFzLA?select=2HgBFTMEYhPVpmsPDUn38Q A quick 6-8 second dip in the pool of broth will give you mouth-watering melt-in-your-mouth like buttah beef. The Snowflake Kobe-like Beef is so deliciously rich in flavor from the lovely white flecks of fat that it rivals the Kobe from Shabu House. LIKE BALLS? I DO. If you do too, another delicacy you will find at Gold Coin Training are Chicken Testicles which is good for *ahemcoughahem*. Yup, you've read right! Like humans, the balls came in various sizes; hmmm, I learn something new every day. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/G-NgB1MxeFQOeo9oAmFzLA?select=l-h0HBtbU52GiDOh9Y8Prg Simmer the balls until its firm with a slight bounce to it when you poke/squeeze it. Upon biting into it, the testicle has a pop to it (like sausage casing) with a mild flavor and texture similar to a soft tofu. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/G-NgB1MxeFQOeo9oAmFzLA?select=bPjK7Mc6pGPF4B0BCazTyQ Being a sharing person, I kindly tossed some cooked balls into my guy friends' bowls. Though I got some glares and the evil eye, their sake-induced appetites couldn't seem to resist it. MmMm, protein! Yup, that's what SHE (I) SAID. OTHER NOTE(S): *Cash Only

This tiny market in Chinatown is packed full of shabu foods and condiments. This place really is a one-stop shop for all your shabu needs. The only thing they do not sell is ponzu sauce, but the owner is already looking into stocking it just because I asked for it. That is great attention to customer feedback in my opinion! The owners are very nice and appreciative of their customers. The quality of the thinly sliced shabu beef can't be beat. I used to buy my shabu beef from Nikiya Supermarket in Japantown. Not until I tried the beef here at Gold Coin Trading did I come to realize that the more expensive version in J-town does not even come close! Parking can be pretty tough here. But put their number on speed-dial because they will prep your order in advance AND even carry it out to your vehicle if you call in advance. WOW.

A foodie friend recommended this place to buy "snowflake beef" also known in Cantonese as "fat cow", for hotpot at home.

We ordered: - 8 Whole Boxes of Povi Masima…read more We've been coming to Robert's Corned Meats to get our Povi for years, literally since I was a child. It is also the oldest corned beef company established in San Francisco as well. We only like to get our Povi from Roberts Corned Meats because the quality of it beats anywhere else. I've tried other Povi Masimas and can taste the difference. NOBODY and I mean NOBODY is touching Robert's Corned Meats. The gentleman Edgar I believe was his name had helped us as we did an over the phone order for 8 whole boxes and asked them to seal each one as we were sending the boxes to family overseas. The transaction was very fast as always! Sign a paper, provide the money and wait for your boxes to come out. Boom, done! Each time we get an order, the worker always provides the service to load our car with the Povi which is such a huge plus! We really appreciate the generosity and great service each visit! This is why this place gets such a high rating, the service is top tier and the meats are top notch! The parking is super rough as it's on one of the busiest streets in the city near the freeways but trust me it's worth the struggle. There is an alleyway around the corner of the building you can park in but it is a hit or miss. It is also cash preferred/only as well! The inside of the place is always clear and neutral setting. I love that it has so many old school pictures to view! It's also very clean as well! They offer so many other meats as well, sausages, bacon, linguica, pastrami, brisket, beef tongue, pork legs and cooked meats. I might be missing a few but I'm telling you, this is the place to get your meats. It's truly worth it! There is a reason Roberts Corned Meats are still in business for so many years, they are the real deal. Thank you Roberts Corned Meats for your amazing service and items served, you've placed a mark on a lot of us Polynesians - specifically my Samoan people. The functions won't ever be the same without your Povi Masima! I hope you all look into this place and love it just as my family and folks do. You won't regret it.

I've been here twice. First time I got a leg of lamb and more recently some double cut pork chops…read more I'm sure they are helpful if you ask questions but they were pretty busy both times I came in and it felt like you needed to know what you wanted for the most part. For the leg of lamb, I think most people get a whole leg of lamb. That was way too much for me and I think the butcher thought I was confused when I asked for less and asked me what I was doing with it. He ended up saying he could give me a half leg of lamb and I agreed. Thar was about 3 and a half pounds (bone included) which was the perfect amount. I seared it and then braised it and the meat fell off the bone. Delicious and the price was pretty good. I was cooking my first pork chop and decided to come here to get it. Their pork isn't labeled as Berkshire or Duroc or anything but that probably keeps the price down. For chops, they had boneless, bone in, and double cut (which was also bone in). I mentioned I wanted it to be about 2 inches thick and the butcher said to get the double cut.I got 2 beautiful thick pork chops for $6.99 a pound so about $18 total. The regular cut bone in pork chops were the same price though obviously smaller. I brined this overnight and reverse seared it and it was great. The chop was a loin chop- loin and then a tenderloin nugget- not a pure rib chop. Cooked really nicely and was tender which I think was partially the overnight brine and also their pork. They do sell some vegetables and grocery supplies if you want to just make a single stop. They also have a deli with some sandwiches that looked good and prepared foods. I was very focused on buying the things I came in for and getting on with my day both times but I would like to take a closer look in the future as it looked good. Solid butcher shop and clearly loved since it was busy both on a weekend and during the week. I'm sure I will be back.
