Wonderful little town in the mountains near Boulder with a nice classy restaurant and amazing menu selection. Fun drive also.

Gold Hill was such a fun time with my friends! We didn't stay the night, but we went to the bar for the live music. We started by sitting in the backyard and played cards and had some drinks. The drinks were honestly very affordable and I loved that there was no service because you could really live in the moment. Not to mention the staff there is really nice. Also great because it's far removed so you could see the stars! The live music was so fun and the atmosphere was so great. Will definitely be returning! read more

A little challenging to get to, given dirt roads, but absolutely worth it! A six course meal runs $51.00! Appetizer, soup, salad,entree (we had the tournedos of beef and the lamb) with potatoes or rice and three veggies, dessert snd a cheese plate to finish the feast! The chocolate cake was divine. Above the city of Boulder is a town (Gold Hill) that feels like it's from another time and place. In this small town is one of my favorite restaurants - The Gold Hill Inn. I've been there for my wedding anniversary, other special occasions and to take out of town friends. They serve a 4 or 6 course meal. The 6 course meal is only $49 per person!!! It is one of the best deals I've come across in Colorado. The 6 course meal includes homemade bread, appetizer, soup, salad, entree, dessert & a cheese & fruit tray. The food is delicious, the servers are incredibly friendly and the ambience is both romantic and rustic. They sometimes have music in the beer garden and in the bar. The drive to the restaurant has wonderful views. They are open from May to December and are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. read more

After a lengthy city council meeting (Zoning budget secured for 2025 !)) Zander and Zoey took us to the most astonishingly astounding Greco-Roman museum and restaurant. Hour waiter posed the all important question of truth: 3 course or 6 course meal....of COURSE we did 6 COURSE !! Great value and quality of service and great food is what makes the best meal in the whole Gold Hills region. Cozy and rustic atmosphere and friendly service unfortunately don't make up for the less than mediocre food and a lack of creativity. The wine selection by the glass was a handful of varieties from undistinguished labels of unknown vintage. We chose from the very small wine list a bottle of the 94-point rated 2021 Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for $61. It sells for $40 online so the markup was very reasonable. The wine was quite nice. For dinner we had the six course meal at $46, and every single course was disappointing. The presentation was plain, cafeteria-style, most courses with no garnish. The soups were bland, the salad was a few pieces of plain lettuce with some slices of red onion and tomatoes served on a small bread plate and doused in dressing. The lamb shank and the bacon-wrapped filet mignon were tough, the bacon looked like it was boiled. The sides: one small boiled potato per plate, red cabbage that was mostly just tart and otherwise flavorless, and mashed yams served just mashed up with no butter or maple syrup. The dessert courses, including a small cheese plate, too were uninspired and had little flavor. No one described the cheeses to us but they seemed supermarket quality: a small slice of each of basic gouda, some blue cheese, and some other mild cheese we couldn't identify. read more

I'm sad to leave a poor review for GHI, since it's been a Boulder icon for so long. But we did not have a good experience. The borscht soup was awful. It's one of my favorites and I've been making it for years as well. Beans do not belong in borscht. And there was not a hint of beet to be found. The broth didn't even taste beet-y. And the broth was brown---it should be beet red. Plus, it just was not tasty at all. The raspberry vinaigrette was WAY too sour. Three of us had the Tournedo and it had a strange flavor. Mine was tough with a piece of connective tissue running all the way through it. The "team" approach with the waitstaff was slow & disorganized. All 4 of us had to ask more than twice for drinks and a couple of other things. What WAS good: The home-baked bread, the bleu cheese dressing, the side vegetables, the desserts and the fruit & cheese. Overall a very disappointing (and expensive!) experience. Getting to this place is quite the trip through the mountains outside of Boulder -- prepare accordingly, especially if arriving at night. The ambiance here is indeed very log cabin, old-timey, mountain town saloon. Even the toilet is old-timey! The live music in the front (if happening while you're there) really helps paint a picture. We enjoyed every dish we had here, a multi-course meal where we had a couple options to choose from for each course. We had: - a nice salad - some sort of tex mex casserole as a starter - borscht and a cold cucumber soup - stuffed smoked trout and tournedo steak - chocolate torte and sour cream apple pie - fruit and cheese plate The portions here are so generous, be prepared to leave FULL or with leftovers. The cheese and fruit plate was a surprise to us and we had to rally to eat it. Everything was tasty and service was attentive and helpful. The staff here are so nice they even helped my friend retrieve the bag she left the next day when the business was closed! read more

We stayed at the Blue Bird Lodge, which is right next door to the Gold Hill Inn. https://www.goldhillinn.com/lodge/. You need to rent the entire lodge, which is $825/night with a two-night minimum. We went with two other families and it was really fun to stay in such an historic place. Just to sit on the covered porch with a coffee or to walk steps to the evening concert made it work the experience. The inn was incredibly quiet at night. We were there at the end of August, so the nights were cool but the days were warm. Besides the Gold Hill restaurant and General Store, there are not many places to eat in town so I recommend bringing your own food to cook some meals. There is no freezer, so bring a cooler with ice. Also, some townies said not to drink the water because the mining through the ages put chemicals in the wells. I had already drank a lot, and didn't get sick, but if I were to go back I would bring my own drinking/cooking water. Highly recommend this sweet spot. read more

Food is not good. Mediocre at best, and that's being nice. Service is poor -- no dedicated wait staff for your table, you get a inattentive crew that share tips and don't care about you or your table. They basically try to make their money on live music and booze and it shows. They regularly over take an otherwise quaint tiny mountain town and ruin it for the people that actually live there with excessive noise and traffic wed-sun, from 5-6pm -- until people decide to go home, which is often well after 10-11pm. Sometimes you can not even get through the town or down any of the side streets, so no, not reccommended. This is certainly not worth a trip from Boulder/Denver metro if it's for the food. The good: great historic restaurant with a good ambiance. Very interesting town and the drive up is part of the experience. Every staff member we encountered was incredibly friendly. The bar had a live band which was good. Fast service and very affordable prices. The not good: The food. Seriously, the food was not good and I am still sick 2 days later. Not sure if it was the catfish pie or the trout (trying to figure out what I ate and my colleagues didn't), but something messed up my stomach which is usually an iron shell. Overall, I would go again for drinks, music and the ambiance. I would just eat beforehand. read more

Truly a hidden gem tucked up and away from Boulder in the single dirt Road Town of Gold Hill. It's worth the drive just to visit this charming mountain oasis but stay for live bluegrass and great food. If you're a beer drinker bring cash, they had a quick service beer line that was cash only in the outdoor music space. If you expect to eat dinner inside make reservations a few days in advance. And the drive from. Left hand Canyon is 4ish miles up hill on a dirt road but if you're reading this you probably drive a Subaru and the road is well maintained if a little rustic. read more

Everything was bland, no flavor appeared to use no spices, sauces or anything at all in anything we tried. The only thing I liked was the small salad because the plum salad dressing was nice and I do like having crisp jicama on a salad There were 2 small slices - this was the "best" thing all night and the only reason I gave 2 rather than 1 star. Bread was ok kind of a hard crust & very crumbly inside (millet?) which got ALL OVER THE TABLE. and even though the waitstaff removed our appetizer soup and salad plates they did not make any attempt to clean up crumbs and just placed entree, dessert and cheese course plates on top of the mess. Nothing rated in the good category all either ok, poor or horrible. My dinner companion would rate this a zero. I had been a big fan of this place in the '70's and had been looking forward to going again. Sadly, In this case "fond memories" should have remained in the past. read more

The setting is wonderful in an olde mining town at the top of a mountain. The town is charming and laid back. The Biergarten is fun when there is a band and lots of of young families with little kids and dogs. Where Gold Hill in Falls short is the food. Mediocre at best. Very skimpy servings and average tasting food. Go there for the Ambiance but don't expect too much coming out of the kitchen. Waitstaff is very friendly but a bit disorganized. I had to ask different servers several times as to the status of our meal since it was taking too long for our Apps. Be extremely patient when it comes to ordering drinks especially from the outdoor window. We stood in line for 40 minutes just to get a drink and missed the first set of the band trying to get a drink. Otherwise it is a unique experience and a nice way to spend an evening as long as you're very patient on the weekend. Again, the food not great. Wish they would find another chef. read more

Hey the ride there was great and the server that took our order was attentive. It's a great old inn. Unfortunately the food wasn't nearly as good. The fish was tough, the duck under cooked and the beef was underwhelming. The couple of boiled potatoes didn't help either. This was a bad experience. We opted for dinner in the Beer Garden and were immediately hit with a $15/person cover charge for a band that was simply awful. The food was mediocre and it started raining as soon as it arrived. The band didn't start playing until 5:45, 45 minutes after opening, so we heard only about five minutes of what sounded like dogs howling before we left. The drive up to Gold Hill is extremely steep and winding, with 7 miles of dirt road. Now we need to have the car checked out because it apparently sustained damage during the drive. I heard of this place a few years back and finally made it there. It's a simple-looking establishment that serves food that exceeds expectations. It's set in a small, old mining town and the dining area reminds you of something from a 19th century establishment. I dig it. Let me state again, the 6 course meal was amazing. Home made bread and jam (so good!), filet mignon (tournedo?) with an stunningly savory sauce, fantastic sides, and delish desserts. Cocktails in the side "beer garden" were amazing too. To those leaving reviews about modernizing bathrooms, or the road getting there, I don't even know where to start. Why would you go to a place like this expecting the a bathroom attendant or something? Just stay in Boulder and Aspen, snobs. read more

I had happy hour with a margarita flavored with most delicious honey flavored agave; courtesy of one of the original builders and blues legend Burle Galloway, we didn't have time for the 7 course meal they serve every night! Wow is all I can say! So, I went here Friday night with my family of 9. They accommodated all of us (with reservations in advance) and we ALL got the six course meal. Now, I emailed in advance and let them know I am 100% vegan, of which from looking on their menu prior, they did not seem to have many vegan options. After emailing them, they told me that they could completely make me a FULLY VEGAN 6-course meal!! SO INCREDIBLY NICE! We get there Friday night, and right away, the waiter and owner (probably) tell me that the ya I'll go through my vegan courses with me that they are preparing specially for me. Like, they went so out of their way for me! Every single course that was for everyone else had animal products in it, so they literally made me a different vegan course every time. And the food was SO GOOD!! I included pictures of all 6 courses they made me. My favorite course was the entree they made me. A huge stuffed pepper filled with mushrooms, soft cooked pumpkin seeds, rice, and more. It was one of the best things I ever ate! They serves that with potato's, zucchini, and bokchoy, all cooked perfectly. Besides the food, the atmosphere and town made me feel like I was in a movie. This was once a favorite. After my experience last night, I won't be back. My fourth and final visit was disappointing. This place used to have nice linens, great service, and amazing food. I got none of that last night. The service was slow and inconsistent. The food was not great. The strawberry jam was as good as usual,. The bread was very crumbly and heavy. Ike a biscuit,, but good.. The appetizer was a Catfish Fritata. I didn't care for it, but I wrote it off to a preference. My steak was undercooked, and the chewiest filet I have ever had. The desert choices were weak. The coffee was good flavor but luke warm.. I would have enjoyed my dinner twice as much at half the price at a dozen different places in Longmont or Boulder. We are locals and feel so lucky to have such a wonderful local restaurant and live music venue in our town! Some of the best things about the Gold Hill Inn are the variety of deliciously well-seasoned vegetable side dishes that come with the entrees, the authentic atmosphere of the interior, the impeccable service, the casual outdoor "beer garden" with stage and tables (where you can order the same great food even if you didn't get a reservation), the wine selection, the homemade GF bread and strawberry jam, and the quality of bluegrass bands who come through. This is a wonderful place for a date, a wedding, or a family celebration, and it is not overpriced for the quality of the food. Lamb was tough, hot and sour duck soup was so spicy we couldn't eat it and had to return it, and the avocado and smoked salmon salad was disgusting because the avocado wasn't ripe and the smoked salmon salad was half red bell pepper chunks and barely any meat. You know that idea you have about creaky, wooden cabins at the tops of mountains filled with bearded locals and knee-slapping banjos? Gold Hill Inn offers just that. Mix in a handful of well-heeled Boulder savants and you've got yourself a party. After what feels like an endless drive up a paved and then not so paved mountain road, you'll find some yellow lights emitting from the hippity shack. Park along the narrow street dotted by fellow wooden cabins (it's quaint, really), and then step on in to the largely open receiving room. There's a few tables for beer guzzlers to clink glasses and then there's the stage ready to welcome one of the many musical acts that filter through these historic doors. If you're in the mood for dinner, everything here is homemade and to my knowledge you can opt for the 3 or 6 course meal (decently priced around $30). They weren't serving any bar menu-like items, so my friend convinced them to sell us a loaf of homemade bread (simple, rustic and satisfying) along with some homemade soup (Tomatillo I think?.. again, simple, awesome). It felt like we'd been camping for days and stumbled upon rations we might not see again in days! I must have been a hillbilly mountaineer in a past life because man, this spot really resonated with me. I think I'll just have to come back one day. read more

Authentic fresh cooked food that is outstanding. Wait staff appear to work as a well oiled team sharing duties and guest service from getting beverages to presenting the main course. A fresh vegetable selection is presented to each guest after the entrees are served. Gold Mill Inn presents a 6 course or 3 course meal each evening. The menu, we were told, changes daily or as the supply of items changes availability. Went to dinner on a week night and the restaurant was totally sold out. Reservations are a must to experience the total offering. The ambiance is western/casual, but most guests dress nicely for their dinner. You will find a family atmosphere at Gold Hill Inn. The avocado appetizer was as large as my 2 fingers, the watermelon soup was watery and sour. Salad was good but main course was... Lamb was tough and chewy, steak touronado was dry. If you've never been to Gold Hill Inn, well, you just have to go. The food is passable (think 1980s banquet fare -- while it was tasty enough, they could use a dose of menu innovation), the service was truly exceptional. They do "team service," which means anyone can (and will) help you. There's no "Sure, let me just get your server for you..." I always love when restaurants do this. While the food felt a little conveyor belt, it was clear that so much of it was made fresh in house, which bought the place points. The setting (from the mountain drive to the historic buildings to the quaint town of Gold Hill itself) and the service are really the stand-outs at Gold Hill Inn -- you're paying (a completely reasonable amount, in my opinion) for the *experience,* not necessarily the food. Every single staff member had a smile; our night was truly lovely. As another reviewer said, get there with a bit of sunlight to spare so you can really enjoy the surroundings. We arrived at 7:40 for our 8 p.m. reservations (we weren't seated until 8:30, but didn't mind a bit; there's a delightfully rustic bar/holding area we enjoyed lounging in and we weren't in any rush). Live music started at 9, which left the place PACKED shoulder-to-shoulder; we really had to snake our way through many bodies and a remarkable amount of weed to exit, but the building separates the diners from the live music nicely. Love this out-of-the-way restaurant. If you're in for some mountain home cooking this is your place. Come in, order a drink, and sit by the large open fire while you wait for your table. The inside of Gold Hill Inn is rustic and charming. The waitstaff is pleasant and really try to provide a good experience. There is nothing really fancy about the fare here but the food is good and comforting. I have dietary restriction and they were able to accommodate a 3-course meal for me. What fun- BUT what horrid overpriced food. It was on the edge of being inedible and yes I may return for the music venue and novelty of it all but not for the restaurant. I left most of my meal uneaten- such a waste of money. Over ambitious menu for the volume of diners they have. Why not keep it as a simple western barbecue which suits the area and space better. Although we had a decent dinner, I don't think it was worth driving a mountainous road with hairpin turns and dirt for 1/2 hour or more from Boulder. Quite treacherous at dark. Also very curious that a waiter was in a hurry to take our breadboard before we had finished the bread! Finally, the modernization of the restrooms should be done. read more

A little taste of civilization in the mountains. If you didn't know this was up here, you'd think you were lost on the winding mountain road that leads to the Gold Hill Inn. This is a great place to stop after a killer bike ride! Also, it's a great place to see some cool local music. I guess it isn't fine dining if the restaurant is a log cabin, if there are no table cloths, if the owner/host wears jeans, and the wait staff works communally, but it sure comes close. The food and service are excellent, if a little out of the ordinary. The prix fixe menu has been updated a little, to now offer a less expensive 3 course option to the traditional 6 course. I guess it is good for an introduction for some, but though I eat smaller meals and I can never finish everything here, I still need the 6. There isn't a course that I would be willing to skip. And it is still an excellent value. Lots of good wine choices too. I have been eating here for over 30 years, and everything in my review from 2011 still holds true. My entree tonight was roast duck (half a bird!) and I do not remember ever having it here before. The meat was tender and excellent, the seasonal rhubarb sauce a cool change from traditional cherry or orange glazes, and I brought half of it home. The skin over the breast area could have been crisper, if you wanted to eat it, but I can't anyway, so I slid the sauce off directly onto the meat. The mashed potatoes were homey and buttery. The salad, an interesting mix, with spinach, jicama, green pepper, red onion, tomato, cucumber and parmesan cheese and the house Casey/Caesar-ish dressing. For dessert, I had the chocolate mint cup, a little denser than a mousse, more like a truffle or ganache consistency, great balance with the mint being subtle. My husband had the flourless chocolate torte, my usual go-to dessert here. More than ample in size and tasty. But to back up to the beginning. Fresh from the oven, whole grain, seedy bread, a half loaf for a table of 2. Brought some of that home too. I had the cold cucumber/dill soup, loved it, and my husband loved the hot salmon chowder. Usually the appetizer is more unique than tonight's, an herbed cheese with fresh apple slices. This sort of surprised me because they also end with a fruit and cheese plate after dessert, but maybe this was a substitution for something else that ran out, or a teaser to the 3 coursers who won't stay for the last one. But it was tasty. Apparently, they had an enormous walk-in crowd on short notice tonight following a special event in town, and they had a contemporary blue grass string band (The SheSaids) playing in the bar area too. Yes, the music was really good. People were having a lot of fun, the porch and the dirt street out front were packed. Glad we had reservations. And when you call for reservations, they will ask for any dietary needs, and will make you something to accommodate. Since I have such a long standing sense of their kitchen and menu skills, I won't fault the very minor issues tonight. It was pretty close to perfect and way above 5 stars on every other point. read more
