A terrific initial experience, as we visited Planet Bluegrass to see Elephant Revival and had an all-around superb night! Located in downtown Lyons (a wonderful mountain town with a great overall vibe), Planet Bluegrass uses its surroundings extremely well to cultivate a unique music environment. Their excellent customer service and the area's natural beauty provide a memorable site. Parking ($5) is located about a half-mile away on a farm, and the subsequent stroll to the venue on dirt trails meanders near a vibrant creek with incredible scenery. You arrive at a well-orchestrated entrance that sets the tone for a positive visit. Many food choices are scattered among food trucks and stands, and the overall layout allows for whatever you're into that night. They allow taller lawn chairs and portables in the back half of the venue, while the front is for blanket seating. The stage rocks, there were excellent acoustics on this night and continuous spectacular views. Elephant Revival is always exceptional live, and the venue added to that level of performance. I am so disappointed to share this. The venue was beautiful and up until the day of my sister's wedding all was okay.. then the staff was absolutely awful. It seemed like it was the staffs first day. Lucy was impressively rude to the mother of the bride and our coordinator. She also tried to blame most mistakes she made on anyone else rather than take responsibility. Lucy disappeared throughout the event. She was not helpful in anyway shape or form. If you end up having her as a coordinator, just give up on your event. Our event was confirmed for 230 people and they only set up 190 chairs causing our guests to have to bring their chairs into the reception. The golf cart that was meant for the bride never showed up because she didn't coordinate it. She had a horrible attitude the whole time. It's a shame that we had that experience. We were genuinely looking forward to event. read more

Lyons, Co. I've been a regular at this festival since 1993. There have been some years that the experience was horrible like the time it rained all day for three days and there was mud everywhere. Also there was some years where it was just too crowded and competition for camping or tarp space at the stage was just overwhelming. Often you need athletic prowess to get good sites. The lineup for cars is still in need of improvement somehow but I like how it is more random and fair now. I don't like that the academy students are allowed early entry to the backstage camping area. Typically I think I would rate it three stars but it is so much better than other festivals with the river et al that it gets a fourth star. Then came the 2021 festival with a stellar lineup, good weather, and what seemed to be 30% less people. This made everything more relaxed and there was good cheer all around. I got good seats everyday without doing the tarp run, I'm way too old for that. So the fewer people really helps older bluegrass fans such as myself enjoy the show. Some of the food booths are quite good but most are just too pricey. It is a short walk to town for other food options though. The security guys here are friendly and don't act like rent a cops, they're mostly invisible. read more

Hellooooo! We've been enjoying coming to Planet Bluegrass for RockyGrass every year for 20 years now. And we are so grateful that you offered a streaming option this year due to limited capacity from Covid-19. I bought the three-day streaming option for my husband to enjoy, and additionally treated him to the package that included the poster and t-shirt. Well, it's been more than a month since the conclusion of RockyGrass and we still have NOT RECEIVED either item. So I wrote an email two weeks ago regarding this issue and never heard back. So I wrote another email again last week and still have gotten no response. So I called TODAY just now, and there was NO ANSWER, even though I am calling during the parameters of the hours stated on the voice mail -- M-F, 9am to 4pm. What the hell, RockyGrass? Why is no one responding nor sending the purchased merchandise? read more

The 2012 RockyGrass lineup was superb. The music was great. There was great variety of food and beer, and it was reasonably priced. I cannot wait until next year. So why not 5 stars? Simple, the tarp system is antiquated and does not work in Lyons. Sure, in theory, when the "owners" of the large random tarps are not using them (most of the day), then anyone can use them in their absence. However, it is awkward walking on other peoples' tarps. It is inconvenient to find an open tarp. It is nearly impossible to find a place for a even a small two-person blanket. To illustrate the point, if I arrived early, I could bring a huge 15 X 20 tarp for 2-people and effectively take up a huge amount of space. I would never do that, but many others do. My question is, why even use the tarp system at all? If it was not in place, more people could sit though the entire set that they came to see, then move when not watching the stage during other artists' sets-- i.e. the way most other festivals operate. I concede that the system works better at the much larger Telluride Bluegrass Festival as there are places near the stage to stand, there are places in the back to stand, and there is always plenty of space for people to come and go with tarps and blankets. Not so in Lyons. I had a 3 day pass and had to sit in the river on the first 2 days and found a small spot in the back for my blanket on Sunday. That is, with 3 high back chairs placed in front of the blanket while I went to get something to eat. Not cool. I might not be so disappointed, but this same thing happened last year, it happened again this year, and I can expect that it will happen next year. The most frustrating thing is that we arrived before noon each day and the spots were taken before that time. I understand that many people are camping and on vacation, so they can run to set up and take all the spots each morning. However, many of us live in the metro and work, thus we cannot be there first thing in the morning. Does that mean that we should not get good seats? I guess so, despite paying the same price per ticket as the others. Is it infuriating that most of the people that stake their claims with their tarps are hardly ever at their seat? Yes. I learned in grade school that it is not OK to "save seats." Apparently, we throw that general rule out the window at RockyGrass. Still, great music. I will be back. read more

This is one of those special Colorado venues that you really have to experience to understand. The staff, locals and vendors are not your typical gimme your money and go away crowd. Everyone I encounter here is always genuine and makes me feel good about handing them money, not an easy thing to accomplish in the space. Unless you drive or stay in town at one of the three local lodging options or camping, rides can be difficult to come by and you should have a backup in place if you want it to be less painful. The venue sometimes doesn't have the best sound depending on you position, but the mighty Saint vain set amongst the foothills is something that just sets the stage for a good time. If you're looking for a change of pace and a guaranteed good time, grab your coozies and head for Lyons. read more

We just attended a wedding at Planet Bluegrass and the venue is just perfect. We really had no idea what to expect at first. We and other out-of-town guests were picked up from our hotel by a bus. When we arrived at Planet Bluegrass, we were amazed by the beautiful surroundings. It was an outdoor wedding with a tranquil river as a backdrop. Unfortunately it started to rain at the beginning of the wedding and all of us ran for cover. However, 30 minutes later, the sun came out and the wedding ceremony went on as planned. We ate delicious food under tall trees and watched other people paddling down the river. A perfect romantic setting indeed. read more

This is a great summer venue for Rocky Grass and other fun outdoor concerts. They great about doing their part for the environment. Lots of ways to recycle and such. The most amazing backdrop for warm weather concerts. It's right on the river and has lots of places to camp. Absolutely beautiful. read more

Planet Bluegrass was an absolute dream location for our Wedding Day. I heard about it last year, when my brother went to wedding there and suggested I check it out. I emailed the events coordinator, Julie and she emailed me right back and we set a time to see the place right before Christmas. Julie met us at Planet Bluegrass and was super knowledgeable about the wedding protocol. We loved the layout of the place, but it was hard to imagine what it would look like in the summer. So we looked at photos online and decided to go for it. A great decision. For our wedding on Labor Day weekend the grass was green, the landscaping was clean, the river was flowing and the green rocks were a gorgeous backdrop for our photos. It was truly magical. A slice of "Colorado" . Our guests couldn't stop talking about how beautiful it was. Julie, the Planet Bluegrass coordinator, was very helpful throughout the whole process. She returned emails and calls promptly, helped us plane logistics of sound and lighting, and put us in contact with some other fabulous vendors who really understood the space. Planet Bluegrass has been hit hard by the recent Colorado flooding. But I they are rebuilding the property for a full 2014 season and many of the signature features are still in tact. I'm sure they will make every effort to bring it back with great care and I'm sure it will be a magical place for many, many future brides. read more

What a beautiful place! Planet Bluegrass was hit hard by the Lyons flood in 2013, but you can tell that Craig and his crew have worked really hard to make this place more beautiful than ever. My spouse and I got married at PB this past weekend and we can't stop talking about it. The place speaks for itself and we couldn't be happier.
