Went here with a group of friends and immediately understood why people love this place. River and Woods has that very specific cozy Boulder atmosphere that somehow feels both rustic and intimate without trying too hard. The whole space feels warm and relaxed in a way that makes you want to stay longer than planned. Food was genuinely very good across the board and the service struck that perfect balance of being attentive without constantly interrupting the table or hovering over conversations. I'd especially recommend it for small groups or date nights because it manages to feel social without getting overwhelmingly loud. A group and I visited River and Woods for dinner on a weekday. We easily found parking on the street right in front of the restaurant where there is a sign to easily identify it. I think the best thing about River and Woods is the interior and exterior decoration. It is very clear that a lot of thought and time was put into the atmosphere here. From the cute door knocker to the bathroom wallpaper, the theme is well-executed. The food was a bit disappointing. The blue oyster mushroom appetizer was extremely salty. I thought it was just me but the rest of the table agreed as well. My trout was well-cooked and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The chicken was also salty although cooked well. I did not try the burger but I was told it was salty as well. The prices of all the items were quite high for what I thought was presented. Service was good and thankfully our waters were filled frequently for how much water we were drinking due to the high salt content. read more

I cannot say enough good things about the baby shower we hosted at River and Woods yesterday. My sister wanted a woodland animals baby shower theme, and the back patio/private event space was the perfect venue for that theme. The space already has a good amount of decor, so we added to it to make it a complete baby shower. Rob and Andy were absolutely phenomenal event managers assisting us with our party. From start to finish, they were friendly, respectful and offering helping hands. We appreciate them so much for everything they did to help us have a successful event. We had brunch fare and everything was absolutely delicious. If you're in the Colorado area and want to have a private dinner, baby shower, wedding, rehearsal dinner, etc I would absolutely recommend hosting your event at River & Woods. This was a surprise restaurant pick for my birthday, and it was the perfect choice. Everything we ordered was great: white wine and rosé, bacon + date kebabs, Montreal duck wings, John's gnocchi verde (these are large gnocchi), 1/2 lb brisket smash burger + cheese, banana pudding layer cake, and house whipped chocolate mousse. Service was great. I got great recommendations, a complimentary dessert (mousse), and they even wrote "Happy birthday" on the to-go box. Ambiance - overall, it feels very relaxed. We sat in the outdoor area, which is carpeted with artificial grass. The corrugated roof was supported in the center by a bare tree wrapped with lights. Even though it was a hot day, I felt fine under the roof. The decor inside was nice - wood theme. Attention to detail also extended to the bathrooms. Andy was a fabulous waiter - the 5 of us sat outdoors under a shade cover strung with white lights and some plants growing on edges of patio. Ambiance was perfection for August evening. Our food was perfection all the way from my Sour cherry kombucha (local- Rev kombucha) to forage board and special challah bread to fresh river trout - to amazing gnocchi - a burger (oh but it was so so much more than just a burger!!) and a DEVINE cucumber salad .... I'm vegetarian and was looking for a cute date night spot near the Dairy Arts Center, where my boyfriend and I were catching a movie afterward. Google led me to River & Woods, and I'm so glad it did! From the outside, the restaurant looks quaint and unassuming, but inside it's cozy, classy, and surprisingly elevated. I started with the buttermilk cornbread (subbed the whipped bacon fat for regular butter), followed by the whipped ricotta crostini and gnocchi verde, and finished with the dulce de leche churros for dessert. Every single dish was perfect. The gnocchi were rich and decadent, the radishes on the crostini instantly transported me back to the Russian foods of my childhood, and the churros had a warm, gooey filling that just melted in my mouth. From the thoughtful service to the charming atmosphere to the flawless food -this place was fantastic. Can't wait to come back and would absolutely recommend. read more

Sorry to say that this anniversary dinner experience was a disappointment. First off, was hoping for outdoor seating and was told it was not available and was a special request to be seated outside which apparently I didn't do other than making the restaurant aware of our anniversary. Ordered bacon wrapped dates as an appetizer which were good. When it came to ordering our main course which we both wanted the short ribs, our waiter failed to mention earlier that there weren't any available due to bad supplier. This was disappointing as the waiter recommended the short rib hamburger instead. Didn't come for a burger and settled for the chicken breast, rye berry risotto and sautéed summer greens. Also ordered sides of the mac and cheese, and the polenta. The mac and cheese, very basic in taste came out late, as did the polenta which was probably the best dish of the night. Chicken was just ok, the risotto was like eating grape nuts cereal and greens lacked seasoning and very bland. I guess I don't have a sophisticated palate. The chicken dish wasn't impressive at all and only got worse as I bit into a piece of chicken, I crunched into a small chicken bone! Just a bad night. The manager came over and apologized for the bone and explained that their chicken breast supplier will be made aware. He reduced one dinner by $14 and comped a dessert. Super tasty restaurant. It's this awesome glamping x upscale dining mashup. Good vibe and great service. My husband took us here for a surprise date. We started with some drinks and the duck wings and and crispy artichoke. Both were good, but the duck wings were the preferred. We then doubled down and got duck and short rib for dinner. Beautiful plating and delicious dishes. We ordered their SA Syrah, which they were unfortunately out of, so settled for their last bottle of a vintage of Barolo. Delic! We were able to get a large table during a college football game night/busy weekend. Surprisingly, they were able to accommodate a large party of ten with short notice. The outdoor patio gave you the feeling that you were in someone's backyard and not a patio. Very cozy, lush, and nice privacy from the other tables. They had a nice list of signature cocktails, beers and wines to choose from. They had 5 Colorado beers on tap and few other beers in cans to choose from. The menu indicates that they specialize in locally sourced, Colorado comfort food. I ordered the Callicrate Ranch Short Rib Tagliatelle. I learned that the Callicrate Ranch is in Colorado Springs and specializes in cattle ranching. The short ribs were one of the most expensive items on the menu so I had high expectations for it. With 10 people at the table, I wished I had ordered one of the other meals. Shepherds pie and fried chicken were hits at the table and looked mouth watering. The most expensive does not always mean the best. The other person who ordered in our party was very impressed. Too rich for my taste buds. read more

While we were visiting Boulder we found it difficult to find a flat iron on a menu anywhere, so honestly that's the only reason we chose this place. We were pleasantly surprised! This place is a must! I definitely feel like this is one of the top favorite places I visited in Colorado! It feels like you're walking into someone's home and enjoy a nice brunch at the backyard! They're biscuits are probably my favorite even though a lot of Colorado makes amazing baskets! Definitely sit outdoors as it is shaded and you can enjoy a spacious ambience! The bottom salad is super fresh and tasty! Also, they grow their own herbs in the back garden, so you can see that things are actually made. You also walk through the kitchen, which is really cool! I had a delicious virgin Paloma and the gnocchi verde and my friend had the trout entree. We loved both. The gnocchi verde was creamy and delicious, and the gnocchi was perfectly done. My friend ate the entire plate of trout and enjoyed his salad as well. Our waitress did forget the side of mashed potato's but it was fine because we were stuffed anyways. And she caught it and offered to get it for us but it was the end of our meal and as I said we were stuffed from our entrees. Upscale comfort food and great cocktails. Just for the menu it gets 5 stars. The restaurant proper is tiny, but the extension they've built in the back yard works pretty well. It's not gorgeous, but good company and good food/drink make up for a lot of that. Service was friendly but not always the fastest (but the servers deserve extra credit because you can't get from the front of the restaurant to the back area without passing through the middle of the split kitchen where all the servers are waiting by the passes). While they have ways of dealing with accessibility issues, they do definitely exist. There's available parking off Pearl Street (this is well before the mall), though it's a little catch as catch can. read more

The food is good, but could be better, the service was good, but slow, and because the inside of the restaurant is so small, we sat in their covered patio which was comfortable, but because this was February, our feet were freezing. The food... --Brussel sprouts: Very good and flavorful. --Crispy artichoke hearts: Good --Short rib tagliatelle: OK, not great. --Rocky mountain trout: OK, but not great. --Shepherd's pie: Very good. --S'mores: Very good, possibly the best thing we ordered. Our server was great, but he was stretched between too many tables. The restaurant tacks on a 20% fair wage charge, which they tell you up front, so additional tipping is optional. And then they charge 1% as a carbon farming charge. Really? The price for all this is pretty high, and in my opinion, not worth the money. The 4 of us shared two side dishes, each of us had an entree, we shared one dessert, and I ordered one cocktail, and the bill came to $240. read more

This place is quite good, and I want to give it a 5, but my policy is to take at least one star for underhanded pricing, tipping, or "service fee" schemes. Doesn't matter what other places are venturing to do that now. I normally call ahead or look at the menu/website (surprisingly few establishments disclose such fees/rates--which should never exist in the first place), but forgot to do so before I went to this otherwise nice spot. I'd love to come back, but not until they move to standard American custom: no hokey-fenokey "service fees" or "kitchen fees," etc., and if there are "tip suggestions" on the card slip or digital console, it should naturally start at 15 percent of the pre-tax subtotal. Anything else is super sketchy (aside from the basic economics of the matter--dining out faces a price elasticity of demand that' doesn't move much from 2.3: that means that for a perceived 10 percent increase in real price of going somewhere--inclusive of wait time, drama, fee scheme weirdness/gymnastics, tip mooching, commute, tax, plus the menu prices, etc.--you can expect 23 percent fewer experiences bought, or 23 percent less revenue--anecdotal "observation" doesn't get around that market reality). Do things clean on pricing. We will love and respect you for that, and avoid those places that don't get this. read more
