Although we have a vacation cabin nearby, we have never been to the covered wagon and were pleasantly surprised. The half pound burgers were charbroiled and served with delicious fries. The restaurant makes their own stone ground mustard and several hot sauces- delicious. They also have a few German specialties like schnitzel and strudel but they were sold out! It does have a dive bar vibe but the bartender was great and the bathrooms were clean. We will be back to hopefully try some schnitzel! read more

There are a lot of mixed reviews about this place. As someone who is an out of towner, I didn't know what to expect. I think people are thinking that this is a restaurant, it's not. This is a local dive bar. Do not expect a restaurant. If you love dive bars this is for you. The food was great and the waitress was wonderful. The only negative I have is that it does smell like mold in here but, again, this is a local dive bar. All in all, this was a pleasant experience. I recommend it. read more

Super mixed review here. GOOD: Bar food but all 4 of us enjoyed what we ordered. BAD: Bartenders loud with lots of inappropriate language and just seemed put out/ complaining - not at night and not at the bar, seated nearby with kids. TBH, this was more of a turn off than the last "bad" I'll list. GOOD: The waitress we had was fast, pleasant and attentive and even gave us a free appetizer for no reason. Went here for breakfast this morning and it's a cool atmosphere that fits the name but the people in it were not very enjoyable. It began with the waitress making me go out to my car to retrieve my ID just to sit at the bar when after I informed her I wouldn't be drinking alcohol. Was a solid choice for food in Ned. They have a great atmosphere and I'll make it a usual stop in the future. The building is very authentic and they have all sorts of things inside. The staff was friendly and attentive, and it wasn't too busy for Saturday at 7. There were a bunch of pool tables and other things to do. I got the French onion soup, Beyond Burger, and homemade Apple fritter. I found the soup to be a bit too herbal, but the onion taste was there. Would have liked cheese bread burnt in it but they gave you soup crackers. Not a big deal. The burger was very good. Definitely filled me up. Really loved the Apple dessert too. Hunger struck while driving the Peak to Peak with the Mr. A quick Yelp search lead us to the Covered Wagon Restaurant. The restaurant was part dive bar part rustic charmer. After perusing the menu, the Mr decided on a schnitzel sandwich, I went for the Colorado pork green chili and shared an order of the bacon wrapped jalapeño poppers. The Mr.'s schnitzel had good flavor but was a tad over cooked. He ended up pulling it out of the bun. My chili had great flavor but was a small portion. The poppers were good but at 3 for $9 perhaps a tad over priced. The Mr enjoyed a couple $3 beers and I had a Diet Coke. We ended the meal by sharing an apple strudel that was tasty. Came here for a some food & drinks after riding in the mountains all day on a Saturday. The place has a very old saloon/grandmother house type feel. We arrived a bit late, 9:15pm and the kitchen was close so, we got a round of drinks and went to find food. The drinks were good and very responsibly priced. He was complaining to another employee as we sat down- using the f-word over and over, something to do with Angry Orchard supplies. He was angry and nasty and rude to me. I asked about the day's special and he IGNORED ME. The first words out of his mouth were to tell me not to sit in front of the waitress station- I just sat in a stool in its exact location, NOT in front of the station. He ignored us, questioned my choice of drunk (I just want Kahlua and milk), and was snarling. It wasn't endearing. It was bitter. I was initially really sad to lose the Pioneer Inn, what with it's unique ties to the musical history of Nederland but... this place is better. Truly and honestly, it is cleaner. It is less depressing. The food is equivalent. Oh, and the owner takes Covid-19 concerns seriously, which is appreciated. As mentioned, the food is similar to what the PI served, which is to say that it is bar food. The prices are fair and the food hot. The alcohol selection is also similar. This is my first time creating a Yelp account. I did it solely to write this review. Tuesday mid-afternoon of this week, me and my girlfriend walked into this place and were not greeted upon entering. So of course, we inquired about sitting at either of the two empty tables we saw when walked in. Immediately, the lady behind the bar started to bi*** us out for quote on quote "making her walk so f'n much and walk extra steps to the table." We then proceeded to take a seat at the booth in front of the bar. Immediately again, she loudly started to spout obscenities and harsh words about us being there in the first place. So we promptly decided to leave without saying a word, and we went to Busey's Brews across the street. Night and day difference. We were greeted, shown our seats, given menus, and had a wonderful time. We even asked our server if they knew what was up with what we just experienced at the saloon. He himself stated "I don't go there because i'll get into a fight and the service is abhorrent." So to wrap up my first review ever. Never step foot into this "dive" bar/ restaurant. Zero Stars!!! Food is horrible!! Service equal. I tried to order a Burger Medium Rare, and was told they can't bbecause there's EGG in their burgers. That means there's filler in it. Extremely limited menu, looks like mostly pre frozen, ready made foodservice food. The food was so bad I told my friend that I wanted to "induce vomiting." We came here because my elderly mother read in FB it was dog and kid friendly. It is dog friendly, but it definitely is not kid friendly. It's a biker bar. My burger was closer to a burnt meatball than a hamburger. The fries were inedible. The schnitzel was dry AF and burnt. Someone requested rap music on the jukebox and there were cuss words continiously. The service sucked and the place was gross as hell. One of the worst restaurants I've ever dined. Driving through the area I read some scary reviews of Ned's so we came here instead. Awesome place. Very local feeling. We had Reuben's, fries, cole slaw and jalapeño poppers. I can't say I would recommend this place. My first time in Nederland and my colleagues and I were looking for a lunch spot. One of the employees said they were understaffed, so we couldn't sit outside. The two servers were running round working the whole restaurant and bussing tables at the same time. Our server was super friendly and welcoming, but was clearly busy. The menu here is basic and overpriced. We decided to only get appetizers because everything we saw that passed by didn't look appealing, and definitely not worth the price. The biggest rip off is the jalapeño poppers. It was 3 skinny jalapeño halves for $9! The size, flavor, amount, or quality did not justify this. I recommend going elsewhere. read more

They only offer 4 things on their breakfast menu, 2 of which are eggs or eggs with meat. Our bacon and eggs took over 30 minutes to arrive at our table. When we got it , the potatoes and toast were cold and the bacon burnt. The service was spotty and the atmosphere was not inviting. It's disappointing as it's basically the only breakfast place in Ned. I would not recommend going here for breakfast. read more

This place smells like mold and mildew as soon as you enter. Ceiling tiles are all stained with water leakage from roof leaks. We ordered the house special burger that was a huge disappointment. Tasted like a precooked meatloaf burger with the cheapest hotdog tasting bun. The domestic beers are cheap so I guess that's the draw in a small mountain town. I would not eat there. I always loved the Pioneer Inn in Nederland, so discovering the spirit of the place intact and flourishing as the Covered Wagon this September was a happy thing. The mix of locals, visitors, CU kids up from Boulder and *high altitude eccentrics* was the same, and new menu was terrific. I want to emphasize: Terrific We got set up with a sampler of Tad's red and green chilis, honest-t'god beef stew, and French Onion soup that I barely got to try because my kid hogged it all. Salute to the new owners for emphasizing the voodoo Tad pulls off in the kitchen, and repping his equally terrific Mountain Freak BBQ sauce. For my part that green chili is the winner; perfect balance, just enough 'bite'.
