Yesterday, my wife and I went to Goldberg's for breakfast sandwiches and a half-dozen bagels. We were told it was the first day they had opened since the Covid lockdown. Sadly, based on our experience they should have stayed closed. The bagels were awful - and not just one or two of them. All of them. They look and taste as if they were frozen pre-lockdown and simply thawed out two months later and served. My wife called to let them know about it and rather than offering to do something - anything - to make it right, she was told that it was likely due to "old flour" they had used and that a new shipment was coming on Wednesday. The girl on the phone went on to say that "maybe it would be better if you toast it." No amount of toasting could save these WTF?!? If you know that, then why not wait two more days to open so that you can serve the freshest product possible to the customers who are coming out to support you? My wife often says that she "never met a bagel she didn't like" - until now, that is. What a shame. When I get a bagel, I get it not toasted with extra cream cheese (scallion if they have it). Having a not toasted bagel allows me to really see how good the bagel is in it's entirety.... and let me tell you... these bagels are the best in the DMV. I am such a picky bagel eater but knowing Goldberg's exists makes me want to take the drive out to get them on a regular basis. The scallion cream cheese was also on point. Have been going to Goldberg's for over 10 years. Prices have risen significantly and pricing also doesn't make much sense. For example, no omelette or scramble unless you get it as a side *with* a bagel, which just brings up the price. Said bagel toasted is $2.49 and to add cream cheese, for example (just on the bagel -- not a container of it, even) is $4.49. What?! It's absurd. The worst, though, is that I witnessed the owner (who I had never seen in all of my years) absolutely berate one of the workers with whom I interface with often and is always helpful and kind. The owner yelled at him for allegedly placing an item in a location he didn't approve of. Owner shamed him LOUDLY in a highly agitated manner for placing an item in a location the owner said wasn't where it belonged. He insulted the worker and all of this in front of customers and workers alike. It was next level upsetting, especially because the worker seemed to just shut down, I imagine, to protect his job. That same visit, a customer happened to notice the receipt and very nicely asked for clarification and again, the owner was incredibly rude to her. All of this in front of my 12 year old, too, who was flabbergasted that someone would speak to people in this manner. Years ago, I met an owner (maybe a prior one or part of this husband/wife team?). She was lovely but I haven't seen her in years so maybe it's been under new ownership all this time because this is my encounter with this man. A shame. Treat your workers well and kindly speak with your customers, and set fair prices that make sense. I'm from NY and Goldberg's has been my go to with great bagels in the area so observing these changes is disappointing to this bagel lover. read more

Please do not expect everyone to walk into your establishment fully understanding what the menu's dietary restrictions are, and then berate a customer for not knowing. Explain what someone should know, and do it, oh, maybe without unnecessary judgement. This was my first and last time here. Also, being from New York, these bagels are nothing to write home about. Just discovered this gem after living in the area for almost a year. Absolutely DELICIOUS authentic NY bagel spot. Bagels are delightfully chewy, crisp on the outside and so flavorful! Limited parking in the shared strip lot, some seating available inside, $5 credit card minimum. The moment I walked in, I had never been more aware that the only thing Hebrew about me is my name. The line mid-morning was manageable and processed efficiently, and my order was ready within minutes. They suggest pickle substitutes when they run out of sprouts. Bagel size is conservative, so Goldberg's is a good option for when you need a fix without feeling too gluttonous. Minimal toasting, not that plush but fresh ingredients. Reasonable ratio between lox and cream cheese, capers embedded in the latter to prevent escape; unfortunately the intermediate leaf of lettuce allowed the red onion and tomato to run wild. I'll be back to try a bialy or potato knish, and a powerhouse or avocado deluxe on their salt, black Russian, blueberry, honey wheat, or cinnamon raisin bagels. read more

The best bagels I've had in the area so far. Not too big, not too small, crisp outside (though twice toasted is the way to go), doughy inside. Staff got my order right. Oh, and the lox - it was best lox I've had in the area. Not overly salted, but tender, tasty, and perfect. Last time I had lox this good, it was hand-cut in Brookline. Prices were a bit steep - almost $8!! But with the exception of the cost, I couldn't have been happier. Remember, Goldberg's is kosher, so it closes for Shabbat. read more

There is an a/c unit above the door that drips.....we are not off to a great start. I had my nails done at the place next door (wrote a review on that as well), so i just wanted to come in and grab a bagel with cream cheese. The bagel was okay, although I have had better. A friend and I sat down to eat but there was a guy ( worker) who was talking on the phone so loud I could hear his whole conversation and barely hear my friend. I didn't feel comfortable there. It needs a thorough cleaning (decluttering) and maybe a paint job. I'm don't a fan. There is a better bagel shop a few miles away. read more

I pop in when I visit the pet store in the same strip. It always makes me happy when they have salt bagel, especially an hour before they close for Shabbot on a Friday afternoon. Be sure to get here before 3pm on a Friday, or the only salt you'll get will be from the tears you will shed because you'll have to wait until Sunday for your deli fix. read more

This is a nice little New York bagel shop conveniently located right off Georgia ave and the beltway. It ordered the egg and cheese bagel on a toasted poppy bagel with coffee. The bagel was even better than I expected I think because of how good the bagel and cheese were. I'm not sure they type of cheese but seemed high quality. One note is they don't serve any breakfast meats due to it being kosher but the sandwich really didn't need it as everything else was very good. read more

Foiled yet again. Yes, they have good bagels, but horrid hours. I've only managed to buy bagels here once despite trying multiple times (and guests have brought us bagels from here as well). This last time I arrived just before closing but they had already locked their doors and refused to help :( Basically the only time I can get bagels from here is on Sundays. The customer service is non existent. Had an issue with missing items from the order when I called the store to talk about the issue the manager would not even let me explain the problem with the order. Manager shouts and doesn't let you finish offered no resolution to my problem. The food that did come was under cooked and underwhelming. Solid bagel with low-fat scallion cream cheese. I just wish they had more onion topping. They offer vegetables on bagel sandwiches including cream cheese and I think it is lettuce tomato and onion. My usual place for getting actual bagels in DC imported from Brooklyn had been closed and is still closed so I had been hunting for a replacement for my everything bagels. When Goldberg's reopened for pickup I got a half dozen. All of them looked like the picture with the freezer burn ring and they were dry and misshapen. They had clearly been made and frozen back in March before the Covid-19 closure. I may try again if my usual place near Van Ness doesn't open soon, but in the meantime I've found most bagels to be disappointing, more like bread rings than heavy high-gluten bagels.
