I've been there twice and both time they got my order wrong. Popularity hurts quality. I've been going to the Bethesda location for about 10 years. My initial take would have been 4-star. I'm from Jersey and have high standards for breakfast sammys. I'm sad to say that my last two experiences were 2-star. The volume of business on weekends has hurt quality. The egg is not runny enough. They forget to toast the bagel and roll. This is a funny, but true story. I was test driving a car and I smelled something really good. It kept me guessing, what could it be? This was killing me. Where was it coming from? When, we got back to the dealer and got out of the car, I kept looking for the source of that delicious aroma. And, low and behold, right across the street was Bethesda Bagels. I let my nose, take me to that delicious smell. I ordered a half a dozen bagels and lox and cream cheese spread. Service was excellent! They didn't have the smaller lox and cream cheese in the case, but the gentleman behind the counter had it made for me, in a jiffy. Those bagels were large pillows of delicious goodness. I really enjoyed mine fresh out of the bag, when I got home. The lox and cream cheese spread was yummy too. Located in Downtown Bethesda, Bethesda Bagels is a quaint place to pick up a delicious NY styled bagel. This is one of the only places nearby that I've found that has an egg everything bagel (my favorite). They also have vegan cream cheese options for my fellow dairy free friends. Something I like is that they really pack on the cream cheese. Overall it's one of the best bagels in the area and I look forward to being a repeat customer. Saying this as someone who grew up on Long Island and is unnecessarily picky about bagels, I loved this place! The bagels were nice and fluffy, and I liked the way the cream cheese complemented the rest of the sandwich. It was busy in a way that reminded me of a lot of the NYC bagel places I visited, and the staff were efficient and courteous. I strongly suggest you order ahead, not sure what the wait would be if you don't, but probably pretty long. Great prices too; I got turkey + many toppings for only ~$7. I really want to like this place as it's a convenient place to grab breakfast after my weekend SoulCycle classes, but every single time I've been here, I've been met with subpar customer service in that the employees are often rude, brash, and give you the impression that they're annoyed that you're there. In fairness, I'm only there on weekends during times that they're very busy, so perhaps it's different when they're slower. To give some specific examples: One time I went in and ordered and had a bottle of water in my hand (again, coming from a SoulCycle class). It happened to be the same brand of bottled water they sell in the store. In ordering, I didn't say "and this bottle of water," but happened to look down and noticed that the person at the register had added on the bottle of water to my bill without even acknowledging it. I let him know that I had brought in the water in my hand and while he removed the water from my bill, he seemed annoyed to do it. I couldn't tell if he just didn't believe me or was just annoyed to have to press a few more keys on the register, but it didn't leave a good impression from a customer service standpoint. I had not been back since, until today. This time, I preordered through Toast to have my order ready an hour from my order time to coincide with the end of my SoulCycle class. However, my SoulCycle class ended up getting cancelled. I, therefore, went into Bethesda Bagels and asked if I could get my order sooner vs. waiting until the original pickup time (which at this point was 45 minutes into the future). I was told that this was not possible as they were very busy and I had to keep my initial pickup time. I get it, sort of, as it's not their fault that I had initially requested the order at a different time... HOWEVER, people were actively walking in and ordering... AND people who placed orders after me online and had requested "now" pickup times were getting their orders... Was it REALLY impossible just to add my order to the queue to have it ready at some point before 45 minutes into the future? Nonetheless, I waited and 45 minutes later, had my order. I've likely gone here for the last time, but based on the crowds, seems like half of Bethesda likes this place, so losing one occasional customer will hurt them in no way. read more

I popped into Bethesda Bagels for something for lunch. It's along the busy Bethesda avenue, and it was just the first thing I saw after leaving my garage that wasn't a chain. Walking in, there's a few fridges stocked with basic drinks -- sodas, juices, etc. -- and some standing area before you get to the counter. Sacrilege, I know, but I did not order a bagel: I got a reuben sandwich. Once you've placed your order, there's not really anywhere to stand and wait that isn't in the way -- I had people constantly shuffling past me, as well as other people waiting just trying to also get out of the way. The restaurant also has one of the worst cases of threshold amnesia among its customers -- I don't know what it is about the place, but in the few minutes I was there, I saw several people come in, and just freeze in the doorway, slackjawed, staring into space for a few moments, perhaps trying to figure out where to go, or I don't know -- but the layout of the restaurant doesn't make for a great waiting experience. Worse, for some odd reason, it had to be 95 degrees in there, on a nice early-spring day where its really too warm for your coat, but you're still wearing it because you left the house with it. I don't want to be dramatic, but I actually felt overheated by the time I got my sandwich. There's no sitting area, and the few benches and what not along the street were occupied, so I actually wound up taking my sandwich on an errand, then going back to my care and eating it in the parking garage. Don't judge me! It had only been about 10-15 minutes, so I don't think it affected it at all. (Also why I've got no pictures of it... ya'll don't wanna see a sandwich with the steering wheel behind it). The sandwich was pretty good. Not like mindblowingly good or anything, but a good, solid reuben. It was a bit on the greasy side, and the cheese was squeezed out of it, but otherwise, it was definitely a solid passing reuben. It ran off before I could take a photo, but the damage was done. Also, there are only some outdoor tables to eat so you cannot sit and eat. While bagels were pretty shiny on the outside, they were pretty dry and tough rather than chewy. As honey walnut raisin cream cheese sounds unique, this cream cheese was overwhelmingly sweet and cinnamon. I barely tasted walnut or honey as it's just sugary sweet. The breakfast sandwich was a great size and okay, but it wasn't fresh at all, as eggs, sausage, and cheese were already cold. There are various bagels, sandwiches, and cream cheese, so you might find something interesting. The price is pretty affordable too. If you're in a rush I highly recommend ordering and picking up - the location is very busy which is a testament to their popularity. The bagels are very good. I like that you can do add ons to their standard sandwhiches. We even got the special rainbow bagel which was delicious. Ordering could use some improvement here though. We had some dietary restrictions but the person i was ordering with would not let me state them without following his ordering process. I started saying it but he cut me off and started his standard line of questions. I can appreciate that people have their own way of doing things, but after i told him our restrictions he was annoyed with me and made a comment about how he had to start over. I ordered the Avocado BLT sandwich. The bacon on my bagel sandwich felt like I was handed the scraps left over at the bottom of the fryer. Not one full piece of bacon on my sandwich just a bunch of crumbles that were not evenly distributed. The plus was the avocado was perfectly ripe, and the lettuce and tomato were fresh. The bagels are high quality and large in size. They were out of the bagel that I wanted (Jalapeno Cheddar). The staff here are not friendly. For example, if it's mothers day you should probably say happy mothers day to the moms as a step in the right direction.
