We rented a car and when we showed up we waited for about 30 minutes while we watched them reject three people in front of us (all Americans), for various reasons. One had a credit with the number printed on it, but the numbers were not embossed. Another had a visa that they claimed was not valid, despite her pointing out that it had valid dates and was issued by the Spanish government (why a rental car clerk feels they have any authority to overrule an immigration official who had already let this person enter the country is strange). Then it was our turn. We had an embossed credit card, insurance, no visa, BUT our international driver license was digital (along with my physical license). We were denied. Like the others in front of us, we protested. The woman took our phone and spent 5min scanning the small print (not kidding!) to find a line in Priceline's contract that says a rental car agency "may" ask for a physical international driver licenses. So, we Lost a few hundred dollars and then spent 850 euros to rent last minute from Hertz. They don't want to rent to non-Spaniards and appear a bit racist on top of that given what I saw. This is a shit company and Priceline should stop allowing them to rent to Americans. It is clearly a scam. AVOID THEM, EVEN THOUGH THE PRICE SEEMS GOOD. read more

I would avoid Goldcar Rental due to deceptive practices and overcharging. *** We were overcharged at the counter $325.79, 72% over what was agreed to when online booking. ** * We were charged a total of $776.41 (after reimbursing prepaid fuel) whereas when we booked the total shown in the reservation confirmation showed a total of $450.62. I booked online with CarRental8, and prepaid 100% insurance to cover any issue. The CarRental8 reservation confirmation for $450.62 was $306.01 prepaid and $144.61 due at pickup (+ prepaid fuel which was reimbursed so not including in this review) = $450.62. This was to cover ALL rental car expenses except fuel. My CarRental8 reservation confirmation included the CDW coverage as well as third-party liability and collision insurance. My CarRental8 agreement stated I had prepaid for "Extra Collision Damage Coverage with Theft Protection and Zero Deductible". We were exhausted after being up for 40 hours related to overnight travel from the US and were coerced into paying additional charges and insurance or having no car. Additionally, the staff at the counter was snarky and rude. We were only the people there, and they ignored us. We walked up to the counter and asked for help, and they insisted we get a ticket from a machine before getting in line. When we returned from our trip and contested this overcharge, we have gotten no results. read more

I was early picking up my car at FUE airport and was told they had no vehicles of that type available but I could upgrade for €17 a day. At the pick-up point, there were numerous vehicles of the type I had booked. Strange. On return of the car, the rear parcel shelf was missing (stupidly, I hadn't taken photos of every single square inch of the car). I know I didn't lose it or steal it and the car hadn't been broken in to. Strangely, it was the first thing that was checked. It seems obvious to me that the shelf was already missing. I wonder how many people have been charged for this 'missing' parcel shelf. I would advise anyone hiring a car here to avoid this mob. read more

Used these guys in Malaga on a recent trip and was pleasantly surprised. Nico at the service counter was great. He explained everything to me from getting our car, to returning it, making sure we had contact numbers for roadside assistance and making sure we understood what fuel the car took. But the worst thing is that they don't accept credit cards without the numbers embossed on it - so I couldn't use my CC to let them block a deposit. However, they were very happy to use the very same CC to make me pay 66 Euros for their so called "Super Relax" coverage which exempts me from the obligation to deposit $1,400 for damage protection. I also used the same CC to pay for other extra fees (taxes, child seat rental etc.). This is a fraud and they literally steal your money! Don't trust them at all! I rented a car in Spain via Expedia from Fox Rental. When I want to pick up the car, I was told to go to Goldcar Rental. At Goldcar I was informed the additional insurance policy that I purchased via Expedia was not valid and Goldcar would charge me an additional $2000 deposit for damage protection. They also were going to charge me an additional $165 for fuel in case I brought back the car less than full. And finally, Goldcar rental rate was almost twice the cost of what I reserved from Fox Rental for a compact vehicle. The receptionist lied to my face about each of the charges and blamed the issues on Expedia. I was told that I could not cancel and get a refund. It was a horrible experience. I will never rent a car from Goldcar or Expedia again. They lie and steal your money and there is nothing you can do about it. read more

We rented a car in Portugal in August from the airport in Lisbon. we waited 3 hours at the airport to pick up the car. The car died an 1 1/2 hours later. We waited 2 hours for a ride from Gold car which then took us 2 hours away from our destination to pick up another car in Faro. we got our destination after midnight and missed an entire day of our vacation. I have been in contact with customer service but they have stopped responding. do not rent from Gold Car. read more

The experience was awful from start to finish, firstly they turned me away from the desk at 10.15 am as my rental didn't start until 11 am. I found this frustrating as the paperwork/finding the car then took a further 1 hour and 30 minutes, also, the car allocated to me was also in a different terminal which involved taking a shuttle bus and had this been pointed out at 10.15 I could've made my way over in this time? When handed the keys I then walked to the furthest end of the car park to collect the allocated car. I was handed a sheet with previous marks noted, I then inspected the car in a darkly lit area of the car park. Luckily this is not my first rental and I took a video of the car and all existing mark (which I am thankful for upon returning the car!). The rental period was drama free, the biggest issue was when it came to returning the vehicle. The staff member who served me was rude from the very start, he appeared to be disgruntled as I parked the car one spare away from the door? He then proceeded to get a flash light out to inspect the car (this is unusual as they deemed the light to be bright enough to inspect when collecting the car). When inspecting he focused on the front bumper which, in my opinion, was a targeted area as he paid little attention to anything else and then proceeded to say "scratch", after some back and forth I explained I have videos and images of each section and asked him to take a look, "I don't watch video" was the response, after some more back and forth he conceded the point that the scratch was either not a scratch or not done by us. He then requested I sign a document which was in Spanish, when I questioned this he's response was "you are in Spain" (where would I be without this insightful man?!), my only option was to refuse the signing or trust he had not marked any additional damage... I might add the document I signed was provided in English at the start of the rental. I truly believe the staff member saw two young female travellers and tried it on, his behaviour was so transparent that we felt the need to record the interaction, you expect more integrity when using a company as established as this. It is the worst experience I have ever had in a car rental place and will be avoid Gold car in future given this. read more

This is the worst car rental experience in my life, First I had a very poor attention from Ruth in Palma de Mallorca. They tried to sold my an extra insurance and were very agressive... When I return the car I had 1 hour late due to some private issue and the did charge me 60€ and I found this really abusive. I picked Goldcar/Rhodium through Travelocity (ACE rents its cars through Goldcar/Rhodium) based on price, which was cheap. The low rating is for feeling cheated at the checkout counter. The terms stated that there would be a 9 euro fee for each day you were in France or Andorra with a minimum of 25 euros. I would be in France for one night. At the rental desk, I was told that their computer couldn't add one day, that they had to add the fee for all days of my rental. I told them that went against the terms of their policy, and they told me there was nothing they could do. Needing the car, I paid. I am now in the process of challenging the additional charge through my credit card company. The rates are cheap, but be prepared to get bogus charges. read more

This company specializes in hitting you with huge additional fees when you show up to get your car, and if you don't pay they won't give you the car. On our last trip to Spain (Barcelona Airport) we rented from a company called 'Interent' and were horrified to find that it was a front for Goldcar, who had scammed us in the past. Well, true to form they hit was with an additional 167 euro fee for the car or they wouldn't give us the car, and that was on top of the original fee we paid of about 80 euros when we booked the car. Goldcar Rental at Barcelona Airport is really terrible. Although we had a reservation , and arrived on time, after standing in line, we were told we had to wait, because there was no car available at that moment. After telling them we had an urgent appointment, they sent us to the Goldcar office in the other terminal. There again, standing in line, first in their office at the parking, then again a line in the other terminal building. They tried to charge us 1100 € form my credit card, telling that it would only be refunded 2 weeks after returning the car. When I complained about that, they did not want to rent the car out any more, although I had already paid for it!! They cancelled the reservation, and would not reverse it afterwards. On September 3, 2019 we traveled from Miami to Florence. Because of the Hurricane over the Atlantic, the flight had a total delay of 7 hours. At our stop over in Lisbon, we called Goldcar, advising we would be arriving 7 hours later. They said it was OK. We even went over the Goldcar counter, in Lisbon and they also took notice of it. Once arriving in Florence (after a 21 hour trip), Goldcar informs us, that our car is no longer available, and our ONLY option is to pay 125 EUR for an upgrade, otherwise, we would our pre paid fee for the rental!!!! I have rented cars from Goldcar many times without any significant incident but on 20 July I experienced the worst service ever from a truly incapable and horrible assistant at Goldcar Barcelona airport. My first hurdle was a Refusal to accept my credit card because it expired in 5 months time. When I showed I had 3 other debit cards but no credit cards she's pointed out I had indeed another credit card in the pile. However I had messed up the signature panel so never used that. I was accused of lying about the matter on 3 occasions. She then refused to hire a car to any of the other 3 drivers unless they took the manadatory insurance at cost of 1100 euros. The hire was only 465. You can get an annual policy for about 40 euros. Only an idiot would pay 100 euro a day insurance. Clearly they were trying to get us to pay massively inflated insurance. They said the cards of my 3 travelling companions would not go through but when we checked with our banks they said Goldcar had not even tried to process a payment. I have rented from Goldcar on a number of occasions as I rent a car in Malaga every 2 weeks, and they are normally (on the surface) one of the cheapest rental companies in Malaga. However when I add in the charges they have made to my credit card once I have returned to the UK on a number of occasions, it makes them a very expensive option. They get very poor reviews consistently and are the only Spanish rental company that does not belong to the European Car Hire Conciliation service, which is why they can constantly ignore any emails or complaints. Indeed the Daily Mail have listed them multiple times as the worst car hire company in Europe. In November they charged me 180 Euro for damage to a vehicle (which I disputed but could get no comment from them), however they had actually taken 300 Euro from my credit card. I went to the ECHC who told me that they cannot get involved with Goldcar as the company does not co-operate with the conciliation service. Thankfully I was insured so approached my insurer. The Insurers were sympathetic and informed me that they had many people with similar experiences with Goldcar. They were very happy to re-imburse the 180 Euro, but said that regardless of the proof I had that Goldcar had taken 300 Euro from my credit card, they could only re-imburse me the amount that was on the Goldcar documentation (180 Euro). I then proceeded to try and get get the refund of 120 Euro from Goldcar, after several months of Goldcar ignoring every email I sent (in excess of 25) and every form I filled in online (twice per week) I eventually contacted the Centro Europeo del Consumidor en España. Who contacted Goldcar and miraculously almost 8 months after initially chasing them for the money, they immediately agreed that they should have returned the 120 Euro to me straight away And refunded it back on my card the following day - no word of apology or explanation. This is not the first time I have had to chase Goldcar to refund money they owed to me. How many people have been repeatedly ignored by Goldcar so-called 'Customer Services' and have eventually given up, and Goldcar keep the money. I would recommend giving them a wide berth - they are essentially a disreputable company with no customer service at all and they use every trick in the book to extort money from you - including tellling lies as you collect the car. I have been told that unless I take their insurance at the desk I would not be able to hire a car. I have also been told that if I scratched a vehicle I would be liable for the full amount of the vehicle value in excess of 8000 Euro if I did not have their insurance. I have an annual policy from Insurance4Carhire which I would highly recommend, and covers you for all the things such as excess etc.. that is not normally covered by the basic insurance. Goldcar told me that this insurance is not valid in Spain and not worth the paper it is printed on - however over the years I have had punctures and flat batteries and they have never failed to re-imburse the costs. It is worth paying a little extra to rent from Record or Firefly (both members of the conciliation service) and in my experience have customer service staff who respond within 24 hours, are helpful and are happy to assist you if you have a query about a charge or rental. I rarely do reviews but this one was a robbery and I want to share. It ruined my whole vacation, I hope it will help someone fall for the same trap. I booked a car through rentalcars. total rent prepaid £101.27. This included full insurance from the rentalcars website. When I arrived I was told my full insurance was not full insurance, just a refund on eventual claims and they wanted £1000 deposit. if I didn't want to block the money on my card and have little left for holidays, I needed to pay extra EUR 62. I is 11PM and I am tired. I pay. To this, it was added EUR 33 for the late time of pick up. This was another surprise. Really? I indicated it when I booked, no mention of the extra pay. it is 11Pm and I tired, I pay. So I go and check for the car. The car is not there. 55 minutes later, unanswered phone calls all over the world, the desk closed, I take a taxi and go to the hotel. I take a taxi back next day. They apologized. Surely the car was there but not in the part. just outside. They apologize for not telling, but no refund. So the from a total of £101 please add 129.73 EUR of tax, late pick up, extra insurance, +46 EUR of taxi from and to the airport + stressful phone calls all over the world for assistance. It was more than a robbery to me. It was a whole holiday ruined. read more

For this reason, we were told that our booking had "expired" and we had to either pay 200 Euro to reactivate or pay 260 Euro for a new car. Since they refused to reimburse us for our original booking, we felt cornered into paying the extra 200. After contacting our credit card company to file a complaint, it turned out they'd actually charged us for the most expensive insurance and add-ons but printed the receipt in Italian so we had no idea what we were paying for. We'd also tried to contact the headquarters in Spain and their umbrella company in the US but they were of zero help or simply didn't answer the phone. read more

Goldcar, never again!! As usually, I have rent a car for my holiday. I did it online. I planned to go for a 21- days holiday in Spain. Unfortunately I have chosen the Goldcar's offer for all 21 days. I have paid in advance the whole amount with full cover. Because of the health problem of my child I couldn't arrived at the airport in Malaga on the first day mentioned in the contract and I have arrived one day later. I wanted to rent a car for remaining 20 days. At the airport the Goldcar said that my contact is cancelled and all money has been lost. They proposed to me new contract for renting a car that was three times more expensive than others rental companies offered at the airport. But right away they put an extra insurance in the contract without telling me.They said the money was for deposit for damage and fuel and would be refunded after full tank and no damages at return. Signed on a sort of ipad device and they photocopied my signature to the contract which by the way is in spanish. Wrapped the contract which they never showed us in an information broschure. Used the rental in Greece, total scam. It was cheap when we rented it over their webside(80euro), but when we came to the rental (which was impossible to find, took us 40 minutes) they began to lie. They told us that they couldn't accept our credit card, and we therefore had to buy the 1400euro insurance, that they MAYBE would pay us back. When we said we didn't want to pay that much, we left. If I could put 0, I would. We reserved a car for a week and prepaid the entire reservation months in advance. We missed our flight into our destination and attempted to call the Gold Car number we had on file and couldn't get through. As it was prepaid and we'd just be arriving a few hours later, we figured it wouldn't be an issue. WRONG. Apparently, if you arrive after a certain number of hours past your reservation, they consider you a "no-show" and they cancel the entire reservation. No money back, and they won't even match the original price we had paid. We've filed a request for a refund, but the company has done nothing to look into the situation. We prepaid for a reservation for 8 days, and showing up a few hours late means no car? I will avoid this company from here on out. read more

No stars!!! I went to pick up my car today and was told that I MUST take out their insurance for 30 euros per day and they wont accept other external insurance policies. I hired the car for three days so a extra 90euros. Also, they wont accept the national NIE residency in Barcelona document which all public and private places accept as a form of ID. They told me to go and get my passport or citizenship certificate. My home is 1hour and a half away form the airport. ALSO, their other offices accepted NIE precviously. If I didn't want to use their insurance they told me to lock in 4200euros for three days. OMG. I asked for a refund a they denied the refund. So many hidden costs that they push on customers. While in Portugal, we rented a car from them and after a few days of returning the car, I saw on my credit car statement an amount of €1000 euros from Goldcar. I called them to find out what had happened, and they simply told me they charged that amount because of car damage (on the back of the car). I took pictures of the car on the day I rented it but I was stupid enough and didn't take pictures upon returning it. I was at the airport, I was in a hurry and failed on that. For my disgrace, I don't have how to prove the car was in perfect conditions but at the same time they didn't have any proofs of a damaged car sent to me, even though I requested them. Overall, it's obvious to me that this company is a scam and no wonder why renting from them is so cheap at first, but once they have your credit card information they will rip you off! I am contacting an attorney to claim my rights now. And I forgot to mention that this is the second time it happens to me. First time I promised myself never to rent from them again, but they are so misleading that they have other names as well such as Rhodium, which was the company I used on the second time not knowing it was Goldcar. I was a bit reluctant about using Goldcar because the terrible reviews I have seen on the internet but I thought it coudl be different for me if I played it carefully. 1. Collection day. We got a very old car full or scratches. My worry was that they could use any of them to charge me for it. I took endless pictures and spoke to the guy to confirm all of them were in the report. Goldcar took GBP 1410.44 as 'deposit'. 2. Retun day. I got confirmation the car was fine so not surprises with any claims later on. I returned full so no issue. I asked for a receipt BUT they said they will send it by email... TRICK!, they claimed the email address was incorrect (false as I asked the desk to enter it and I even wrote it down for them). Needless to say I never got any email with the receipt from GOLDSCAM! 3. Deposit return. A few days later they returned GBP 1292.2. I called them endlessly and sent emails to no avail. Issue: the take the deposit using a ccy rate and return it using another one. I ended up losing GBP 118.2. Goldcar claimed they returned the deposit but because the exhorbitant exchange rate they use the customer doesn't recover it in full while Goldcar makes a profit with the exchange rate. One more thing. I bet GOLDSCAM is charging multiple customers for the damages on the car (mine was full of them) without never fixing them. How can they charge for a damage but they don't fix them?. Certainly ILLEGAL!. Moral of the story: the saving you may think you will make is not worthy compare to the headaches ahead. AVOID! read more

The customer service person (Alice) refused to give me my car 30 minutes early, screamed at me and called the police (they came and ignored her).
