I had a very disappointing experience with customer service. I was speaking with a representative and asked why my cousin was unable to log in to their account. Before I could fully explain the situation, I was told that I should not be asking because I am not the account holder or guardian. The representative did not allow me to clarify my question and ended the call abruptly. I understand the need to protect members' privacy, but I expected a more respectful and professional interaction. I had hoped for friendlier customer service, and this experience has made me consider moving my account elsewhere. We been with this credit union for about 6 years now financin a vehicle and almost done paying our vehicle off. Im not going to lie we did fall a month behind but recently made a payment to them. They then repod our vehicle not giving us a chance to make it back up after being a half payment behind. Also to make a car payment you have to transfer money to a savings account then when the money reaches said savings account witch takes a few days you have to transfer from that savings account to your car loan account. When i get my car back im refinacing with a more customer friendly credit source. This credit union is scummy and I would never recommend it to anyone. There policy's are too strict and they dont communicate with their costumers. If you try to call them you are on hold forever also, so nothing gets done fast unless it comes to screwing over their customers. Going to file a complaint to better business beuru and I might have to lawyer up if these jerks don't give up my car. Was quoted an interest rate of 6.25 on a new car purchase, after reviewing the paperwork with the Sales person the interest rate went up to 7.75 which was over 1% higher then the dealers offered rate. The customer service sucks also, find another Credit Union. read more

Until recently, I would have given Golden 1 a very good review. But then came its requirement to sign up for two-factor authorization. I have three credit cards with two-factor authorization, so thought it would be easy. NOPE. Golden 1 requires customers to enter their Social Security numbers ONLINE to complete the process. Not a requirement for any of the others. So I called and got a very nice customer service rep. She said she could bypass the regulation by having me create a new user name and password. All good, except the new ones do not work. Apparently, I have to call again and go through the entire process of changing the user name and password, with no guarantee that these will work any better. read more

My mom passed nov.17 2025 went to the bank dec.18 with death certificate and the living trust they said corporate would help last week feb.9 they told me her credit card bill was 12,000 plus after telling me there were no outstanding accounts for 3 months also would not shut off auto payments. I used to have an account with Golden Credit Union which has been unused for some time now. When I updated my address I received a notice in the mail confirming the change and listing my old and new address. The notice stated that they sent a copy to BOTH of the addresses listed. This is extremely unnecessary and unsafe for some individuals. You do not know the reason behind your clients moving (stalker, abusive relationship, etc) and now you gave somebody the chance to locate that client. read more

I did a $1200 balance transfer and one year later that balance is now $1300 so you tell me? They treat balance transfers as a cash advance and you're charged for it every billing cycle. Antiquated systems. Antiquated website. Customer service is polite but unable to help in any real way due to the antiquated systems. Tried to set up an external transfer - took several tries with different answers each time as to what the issues were. Finally goes through, no explanation as to what changed. Now being told I have to prove the external account is mine to actually make a transfer, even though I should be able to set up a transfer to an account that isn't mine, just like with any other bank. Then, tried to stop an automated pull that was set up ages ago. Taking weeks to make anything happen that with any other bank could be done online in minutes. I have been with Golden 1 for over 15 years since it was Washington Mutual, and I used to love them; they had the best customer service. Now, when I have an issue and call, there is a different answer every time. Policies and fees are always changing without notification. The customer service has become abysmal due to the inconsistent answers you receive regarding an issue. Don't listen to the negative reviews. I've been using Golden One for 10 years since I was a teenager. Everything is easy: the branches in SLO county are NEVER busy (If you think they are busy, then move to a big city where you will learn what busy means), the customer service phone line is always as helpful as possible, the tellers and staff are always extremely kind and knowledgeable, and I have never once had a problem with any of their services. This is an OK bank as long as you don't need anything and don't mind that bill pays and deposits from outside banks take a long time; however, when things go wrong--and they will--this bank is a nightmare. I honestly do not comprehend how a bank with such lousy "customer service" ever got this big. I deposited a check from my father-in-law and they suspended my account for suspicious activity, of course I had to find this out when my card was declined. Golden 1 gets the job done - if you are a state employee here in Sactown (a pretty decent bet in most cases) then you probably have an ATM in your building. I do. I hate my crap state building, but I love my ATM by the door. Online they have all the free bill-pay stuff - which if you aren't using then you need to take a look. So between online and the cash machine in my daily walking route I need to actually run to the bank about once every NEVER. Okay, when I buy a car. They are on the STAR system so I can tap into my cash in Puerto Vallarta and at the casino in Sint Maarten where I'm going to drop a bunch next fall. :-) The downside is that they are a credit union - so you have to be employed by a member company to get in. I opened an account with Golden 1 Credit Union online and went in the next day to deposit money and had no idea this was going to be the worst experience ever! The teller gave me my debit card on the spot which was probably the only thing that went right. Eventually, I started used my debit card a day or two later and it declined. I checked my account online to see that it was "restricted" so, I went to the teller a second time. The teller did not know the reason this happened and told me to call customer service at headquarters. I called headquarters and they said I need to work directly with the local bank. I went a third time and the teller said I need ID, SSN, and proof address. My ID was verifed and the teller said I no longer need to show SSN just 2 proof of address and I can send it to the manager's email. I was given a business card. The fourth time I went to the bank is when I could not get a hold of the manager after a couple days. No response from them at all about my email with the proof of address! Today is the 5th time I wasted my time and gas for the teller at Golden 1 to tell me since I live with my mom I need written authorization from her to use the address and the only form of address I can use is an electric bill or gas bill or mortgage bill. It makes absolutly no sense that customers are restricting my funds! Even though I live at my mom's house I have bills outside of the utilities that I brought to show them like auto insurance or health benefit statements but they declined it stating I need to get written authorization from the home owner to use the address. "I am not going to go back and forth with you on it" said the teller. The worst customer experience I have ever had with any bank. Golden 1 dosent care about their customer's experience nor do they uphold their mission statement is which is "commitment to prioritize people's well-being over profits". Long holds. Nobody responds. Told that hold time was 63 minutes. A lie. Told that I could have my place kept in line and that somebody would call me back (gave a different callback number). Nobody did. Went into local branch (Atascadero) this afternoon to try and resolve. No success. Was told that things would have been resolved by 3 p.m. They were not. Called Atascadero branch before 5 p.m. Was again given the run-around. This is not how credit union members should be treated. Time to move my money. read more

I cannot stress enough how awful of a banking experience working with them has been. They are inept. I have spent literal hours waiting there for appointments their management never shows up for, I've been given documents that I need to get notarized (because they don't have their own notary) only to be told months later they never enacted the changes because they gave me completely incorrect documents. All of their services & departments are completely disconnected, so any time you have an issue they all seem to point the finger to some other department or sub-company that they have no insight or control into. I've spent hours in phone trees, with everyone passing the buck or saying it's a completely different company entirely and then when you contact them they say it's in Golden1's control. I have been with this bank for years and in a desperate moment where I needed a loan I did business with someone who was fraudulent and they stopped payment on the loan. My account was restricted and I was told that I would be contacted within 30 days it's been Now 60 days I've had to contact them numerous times. I get direct deposit and have to go to pull the money out at the branch. I sent an email 2 days ago because I was asked to write an appeal to reinstate my account after I'm the one following up on my account numerous times. I called back today two days later to check on it they have not received my email I'm being told so I had to send it again and now wait another 30 days for them to review and another 30 days to reinstate my account. Back in May 2022. Golden 1 leaves a message about a balance due on our line of credit account. My husband calls back and both him and the rep chuckled because it was about a .25 balance. She tells my husband I will just transfer the .25 from your savings. This is not our regular daily bank we use so we assumed all was taken care of. Well today June 9th 2022, we get another call. We now have a 46.00 late fee for this .25. After waiting 50 min on hold, we were told they will submit paperwork to POSSIBLY have this reversed. All this over .25!! Pretty disappointed. Insanely inhuman!! A member for 15 years. Outstanding credit history and was hit with a drastic reduction in income due to childs fathers loss of employment due to Covid, thus a loss in a child support income. Unable to pay my credit card bill. No attempts to reconcile and work with me about this debt, instead pulled $2300 from my account on payday and they offer no hardship programs. Mother of 3, essential worker that had to obtain a new debt of child care from the onset of Covid and not able to get on my feet. Cant pay rent, pay for gas or even buy food. It seems like Golden 1 goes out of their way to make sure you go overdraft. I cannot stress enough how terrible it is to bank with them. Once you're balance starts getting lower it seems like things just stay pending until several pile up so that they can hit you with multiple overdraft fees. Their app is a nightmare.
