My son and I began taking martial archery lessons at Golden Archery because I was looking for something for us to do together that we both enjoyed, was active, and didn't involve electronics. Anyone with a video-game loving kid knows how tricky that can be. I am very happy that we discovered an opportunity to do something much more than just shoot arrows together. Golden Archery embeds archery into a larger framework of martial arts, drawing on both eastern and western traditions, creating something entirely unique. It's not just archery lessons, it's an entire learning process dedicated to giving you the tools for continued development and growth over a lifetime. The program Mr. Johnson has developed (and continues to refine with his impressive instructors and input from a variety of other martial artists) is a carefully thought out system of training, conditioning, and discipline with martial archery at its core. That discipline is an element that appealed to me strongly, both as a parent and an aspiring archer. You're not just plunking arrows into a target, you learn to focus your mind and body on a purpose, to hone yourself to that purpose over time, and see the results of your effort at the far end of the range. These are lessons applicable to a lot more than archery. This is a great place to learn archery for kids and adults! My children have been taking lessons with Mr. Johnson for a couple of years now and they love it! So much so that I've decided to take lessons as well. Mr. Johnson is amazing with kids, taking time to listen to them and working with their individual levels. We went to a Birthday party here. Adults and kids of all ages shot arrows, threw knives, hatchets and spears. Who could pass up those opportunities?! Zack Johnson has a great low-key (very tolerant) but upbeat (encouraging, helpful & FUN) demeanor with everyone. Ample room for large food/snacks spread and spectating/socializing too. I was impressed that they have regular classes, not only for kids, but adults and seniors too. Seems more fun than gardening or pottery, etc. to me! read more

Golden archery and its lead instructor, Zachary Johnson, have a lot to offer. Mr. Johnson clearly loves his craft, and he fosters a community spirit in his practice. Additionally, I deeply appreciate that he wants to bring a controlled, martial artist style to the sport of archery. The ideology is sound. However, it was my observation that Mr. Johnson is himself a scattered individual and instructor which can be difficult to learn from, and completely counter to the mindset of martial artistry. I will also own that, as we were paying him for private lessons, I reacted to his scattered form of teaching, jumping around and forgetting a train of thought, as an acceptable way in which to interact with him as a fellow adult in a private learning environment. Therefore, I would ask questions and express feedback at potentially inopportune times, thinking I was mirroring his modeled style of interaction. In retrospect, I can see that my following his scattered thought process may have, in fact, exacerbated his disjointed and forgetful flow. I regret reading that incorrectly. Martial artistry is a lifelong discipline, and true students are constantly seeking learning opportunities, and true teachers are always students. Therefore, I expected Mr. Johnson, a self-proclaimed martial artist, to seek continuous evolution of his craft and teaching. However, he ultimately un-invited myself and my fiancé from further private lessons and courses with him because I questioned his sensitivity to teaching to a variety of different bodies and levels of body awareness. It was my experience that he would have difficult yoga postures as the first stretch in class, and pays little to no heed to form when having students participate in non-archery related activities. For example, in a circle of students I noted there was a child doing push ups on her knuckles who was absolutely not ready to do an advanced push up. The student's back was bowing and their shoulders were hiked up to their ears. Children can sustain this to an extent, but in my experience it is the instructor's responsibility to guide their students and protect their bodies, as they are the expert. Not altering poor form is detrimental to the students' long-term well-being, as well as their ability to participate in the sport and transfer proper body alignment among movements. My observation is that Mr. Johnson says the right things, but does not ensure he does them. He said structural integrity is important in all movements, but I have not seen that he helps his students achieve it. Additionally, he is not receptive to feedback so will likely not be able to alter these potentially detrimental behaviors, and could set students up for low levels of success and future injury. In fact, when asking him questions and attempting to have a dialogue with him in a private lesson, he asked me to not return to the school. It alarms me that his response to asking questions is met with hostility, instead of discourse. I would advise any future clients bear these things in mind when considering enrolling themselves or family members in Golden Archery. Furthermore, I cannot find that Mr. Johnson has any group fitness or instructional certifications pertaining to his crafts. A bit on my background, I was an all-state volleyball player in high school, an all-american and academic all-american snowboarder in college, did six years of karate as a child, and three years of taekwondo in college. Additionally, I instructed Pilates in college, have had over 500 hours of one-on-one private instruction in Pilates and other forms of movement, and currently train yoga, handstands, and contortion regularly. While I am not an expert in any discipline, I am no stranger to different styles of body movement and good instruction. I believe we have one body and if we want to use it to the best of its ability for as long as we possibly can, we owe it good instruction. Instruction that is consistent, safe, and aware so we can teach ourselves to be integrated, respectful, and in tune with how our body works together. It is my understanding martial arts agrees with this, and if you also believe this Mr. Johnson may not be the instructor for you or your family members. read more

This is the BEST place to learn archery! Mr. Johnson is a phenomenal teacher. He is so patient with children and works well with them. As a more senior member of the student body of Golden Archery (I am 47 years old) who has studied other martial arts in the past including Wing Chun Kung Fu, I am huge advocate of the program. Mr. Johnson's teaching and approach to archery alongside and how to incorporate other aspects of martial practice, including short sticks, taekwondo, self-defense, conditioning and yes of course, better and effective archery and bow skills combined, has given me a fun, interesting and effective fitness program, which is what I was personally seeking after getting back into martial arts a few years ago. I was honored to take home my first outside competition medals at last summer's U.S. Open Taekwondo Martial Archery competition where our school was invited to compete. In 104 degree heat, over a dozen of us adults and children/teens had the necessary conditioning and archery skills to bring home multiple medals each. We all know that medaling and awards is not what martial practice is about, but it brought to perspective the dedicated results of efforts we choose to undertake for those want that level of challenge - and that is part of martial arts. The school offers levels to progress through and something for everyone - small kids whose parents want them learn how to safely shoot and have fun, to adults like myself who seek a more serious workout and personal challenge. Mr. Johnson's sense of humor often carries us through those tough physical challenges while explaining the reasons for what each stance, move, or progression offers to the handling of the bow, shooting of the arrow and outcome of the shot in a way that differs from simple target practice. As a mom. I have seen his interaction with the youngest of the set and am impressed at their ability to learn focus and safety, and respect for the sport and its potential inherent dangers. My kids have been involved in Golden Archery for over a year now. It's a very active organization with field trips, competitive events, and outstanding classes. There is an active parent's group surrounding the organization so this is an ideal activity for kids as well as adults. read more

I am almost 64 and a Novice, only picking up a Bow over 50 years ago. I wanted to try something that my grandchildren and daughter would enjoy and learn together. Glenn spent time setting me up going over the basics and I ended up spending over an hour shooting with a Re-Curve having a great time. Look forward to getting my grandchildren and daughter started.
