The salon is beautiful, clean, tidy, and it really has a great atmosphere. All of the girls are so kind and friendly. Every time after was a painful experience, lots of ingrowns and even bruising. My boyfriend complained that my hooha looked beat up all the time. I still kept giving them chances, but charging $32 for a no show fee is ridiculous - I should have charged them for what they did to my nether regions! High end restaurants and salons charge less for cancellations. So upset I ever gave these scammers a dime.

I find all too often that front counter staff are pretty good at handling the day to day customer service interactions - throw a curve ball at them though, and, more often than not, they completely drop the ball!!! I am currently growing out my hair and only require a trim and some touch ups every 2 months or so. Since I absolutely love the more dramatic cuts and colourings I have received at Roxx, I didn't mind too much coughing up the $65 bucks for a trim to support a business who had been good to me thus far, so after procrastinating for way too long, I decided it was time for a trim. On Friday morning I call them up to book an appointment for 4:45pm that day. I work literally across the street from this place; so by the time I left work at 4:30 and got to Roxx it was 4:32. I checked in (even mentioning that I knew I was a bit early) and then proceeded to take a seat (on the couch right in front of the front counter). At about 4:45 or so, another lady walks in to check in for her appointment. Immediately after she checked in, the stylist I ALWAYS am assigned to comes out, immediately recognizes the woman, and takes her to the back for her appointment. Thinking nothing more of it than it being interesting that I wasn't getting the same stylist as normal, I continued to wait. At 4:55pm (10 mins past my appointment time), I go up to the front counter staff to ask what the delay was - again keeping in mind I am sitting right in front of their faces so it's not like they didn't know I was STILL WAITING! My question "soooo, is the stylist just running a little behind or.....?" took the young lady completely off guard as she immediately agrees with my assumption with a look of bewilderment on her face; "oh yes, just a bit late, shouldn't be more than another 5 mins." I go back to sit, as the same lady walks past me saying "you know what, I am just going to check." She comes back to tell me that it is going to be another 15 20 mins (keeping in mind it is already 15 minutes past my time). At this point it was quite obvious that someone had screwed up somewhere along the line and the appointment scheduled for after me was taken before me. This is not the problem - these things happen and I can understand that (being that I have worked in customer service my entire career so far). The problem is that I am now completely frustrated that you had wasted my time when I would have loved to be anywhere but there on a sunny Friday afternoon. An apology is nice, and she really did seem to feel bad. But here's where it all went wrong: Her: "Would you like to wait?" Me: "No, I think I'm just going to cancel" Her: Ok, would you like to re-book?" Me: "No thank you" Her: "Ok, well sorry about that." Since I am not one to make a scene in these types of situations, I am quietly thinking 'Dammit, now I need to find a new hair salon." Had the nice young lady come clean, told me that they had made mistake, and had she done something to make up for it (discount, no charge for the wash, anything......), I would have said, "yes, I'll wait" or "sure, I guess I'll just re-book for next week." Instead, I will likely not be back. We have all heard the saying that actions speak louder than words; in this case, (im)proper customer service training speaks louder than a fancily decorated salon.

My feet still had quite a few rough patches and my daughter's nails had jagged parts where she had to fix it herself. Also, my daughter's nails were not soaked before the manicure began (not very good practice). If you want a quick job that is reminiscent of the cheaper salons where you go in and out and the cost is reasonable, then this is the place for you, but if you are looking for relaxation, a fantastic job done, well...try another place.

When I lived in Edmonton in the 90s, I found Hairisma in 1992, and it was the only place I went for the final four years I lived there. Even if I knew I was visiting, I waited to cut my hair until I visited and booked a haircut here. The stylists here are pretty busy because they have a lot of clients so it's good to book in advance and not just walk in. They are excellent at what they do, and I remember them getting my cuts right every single time. Believe it or not, several of the gals I went to in 1992 are still cutting hair here. That's longevity! They also use Aveda products so quality is tops for what they are putting in your hair. Randomly thought of this place the other day while talking to my parents who are also longtime-loyal clients at Hairisma. This will probably be the only review I write for a salon, but it's an excellent one!

Sadly that did not happen. Since I could not connect with her here I searched online and yelp for a place that could do something fun and had a great atmosphere. Adara is it folks! They have a great staff and vibe. It was recommended that I see Denise because I wanted to get some fun colours done (suggested by the gentleman who answers the phones, if I'm not mistaken he also makes a great cup of tea). Well, Denise is such a peach! She was friendly and informative right from the get go on top of being extraordinarily talented. I got exactly what I asked for! My colours were fushia, copper, violet and red underlights keeping my natural hair on top. She was really understanding when I got a phone call from a study I'm participating in- right when she needed to get the dye out of my hair. And also my SO coming in twice to check with our one month old (to see if we could pause so I could feed him). And after she trimmed my hair- I wanted to keep the length- and thinned out my over grown bangs she put only a light gel in my hair and some heat protectant spray. All of the products from the shampoo and conditioner to the heat spray smelt wonderful and the scents were easily identifiable. The products have a good enough die down that if you're sensitive, have a strong sense of smell or have sensitive people around you it won't be too offensive later. I might return to purchase a few of them because they really are lovely and my hair feels nice even after my restless sleeping habits... I mentioned the atmosphere before but it really was fantastic- the music was a playlist and was a genuinely pleasant mix- nothing too hard or exceedingly poppy. Also there was construction happening on the building which I hardly noticed. I did hear the front desk guy phoning people and warning them about that too- that's a business that's concerned with their customers relaxation! I would go to Adara again (if I'm in Edmonton) because it was an extremely good experience.
