I asked the boy on the intercom the price of 2 pieces of chicken and mashed potatoes and gravy. He told me to look at the menu. After looking at the prices, I determined that we didn't have enough cash on hand to make the purchase. I toldthe boy,Thank you but I'm going to have to pass today. The OAK HILL location is awesome! This place is NEVER disappointing. Fresh food every time and the staff is ALWAYS courteous. Rolls are the best! I have one closer to my house (stassney location) and made the mistake of going there twice! Ugh!! Please do not waste your money at the Stassney location. At the stassney location their chicken strips are fried in old grease or taste like fish. The rolls are hard and stale. I'm willing to drive an extra 3-5 miles to get better food. This is by far the best fried chicken I have ever had! The chicken tenders are so juicy and have the best flavor. The fried okra is also beyond fantastic! Also, if you haven't yet had their chicken salad sandwich with the juicy grapes and and chicken that melts in your mouth, then you are really missing out! To top it off the chicken salad is on one of their warm, delicious, and mildly sweet yeast rolls. I can't wait to try their new chicken buffalo sandwich! :-D Yum! read more

I've lived in Oak Hill for around 3 years now, and one observation about the area -- there's very little in the way of fast food at and around the 'Y' -- I mean compared to Riverside, or other places in Austin. There's McDonalds, and Sonic a little ways down Hwy 71, and if you drive up William Cannon you'll pass Subway, Jack-in-the-Box, and eventually near Mopac you'll see What-a-Burger and Taco Bell. But I mean, who wants to go all that far? And then there's Golden Chick, right smack dab at the 'Y' across from McDonalds. The fried chicken tenders here are awesome -- forget KFC. And they are even better with that spicy seasoning -- cayenne pepper, or something cajun-like, I don't know. The gravy is nice, and they give you just about the amount that you'd need if you want to dip for every bite -- which, obviously, you do. The sweet rolls are soft and sweet. And as for the side item, can't go wrong with dirty rice -- while it is a little greasy, that shouldn't stop you. The service is prompt and at least the last gentleman to take my order was very kind and polite. I went through the drive-through, and the place does look just a little seedy on the outside, but that's to be expected with a fast food place. In any case, as far as fast food restaurants go, I'd say this place is OK by me. read more

Absolutely the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Upon ordering, their CC machine declined my check card. Knowing there was more than enough money in that account and to show a good faith effort of that fact, I went next door to an ATM machine that was not from my bank. I got money from my account and was charged a $3 transaction fee. Then I went back into Golden Chick and asked to speak to the manager. I told him that I didn't think it was fair that their machine declined my card, since I knew there were sufficient funds in my account. Since it was an inconvenience for their customer to have to go get cash and pay $3 for it because their machine did not work properly, I felt it was fair to ask the manager to comp one side that was equal to the $3 transaction fee I had to pay to get money from my account. He told me no, that it was my choice to go get cash and pay the transaction fee. I then told him that this was not good customer service to treat a customer this way, and he told me to get out of the restaurant. So, I will not spend another dime at this restaurant until they learn how to treat their customers. You know, those are the people who keep you in business! read more

I was passing thru austin on vacation and stopped in Golden Chick with my family for dinner. The service was the best I have ever had at any fast food place in my life. It was late but the employees never made us feel pressured to hurry up so they could leave. My hat goes off to the owner of this location. The price was great. The customer service is the worst I have ever seen. I have been there several times, on 2 occasions I have ordered the very expensive 4 chicken strip, gravy and a roll meal. Both times, there were 3 so-so sized pieces of very expensive smallish sized strips and 1 piece of nothing, maybe some skin that was fried up w/o the meat. The first time I let it go thinking it might be just a fluke. The second time I saved the pitiful offering of fried nothing to take it to them for a replacement. I only go that way once a week or so and I live on the other side of town. When I spoke to a young man behind the counter, he had absolutely no concern for the fact that I had not gotten what I had paid for and basically told me too bad so sad. Not only was he unwilling to give me the small request of the replacement of 1 chicken strip but he was quite rude and discourteous in that ever so deliberate way. When I asked to speak to the owner, he replied that he is the owner, . . . well, . . . he and his father are the owners. Father was taking orders at the window about 14 feet from the counter in full view. I told the young man that I would like to speak to his father and I was told "No, he is busy." I told him I would wait and he said "Ok, you can do whatever you want." and walked away. I waited a few minutes and eventually the rude younger owner went and told his father I was waiting. Father came to the counter, observed the sad, small, pitiful wanna be chicken strip and, under much duress, gave me another one. When I told him it was the second time this had happened, he brushed aside my statement and denied that it could possibly be true. Treatment of your customers with blatant hostility, rudeness, and total disregard for their concerns is bad business. It does not lead those who have been maligned or treated as unimportant to tell others what a great place Golden Chick of Oak Hill is. What is DOES do is lead those who have been mistreated or feel they have not gotten what they paid for, or dare I use the word, cheated, by disagreeable, disobliging, unpleasant, and/or offensive employees or owners to tell everybody they know what a bad place this is to do business. Times are tough and eating out has gotten to be a luxury instead of a spontaneous emptying of ones pockets. I for one will be spending my hard earned cash elsewhere and I will pass the on the message, DON'T EAT AT GOLDEN CHICK OF OAK HILL. If they are unwilling to pursue the tried and true path of good business by making right what was wrong without a struggle, if they are unwilling to treat customers with respect and general decency, and they will cheat you on the food that you order, what else would they do at the expense of their obviously expendable customers? read more

Having lived out past Drip for the last 16 years, it's kind of funny that I'd never tried this place until recently. The chicken is great, way better than KFC. 'Taters and gravy, yeast dinner rolls are also good. Cole slaw is the creamy kind, pretty good but sometimes old looking with gray cabbage. The main problem is that they don't get the orders right, regularly. Once I was shorted chicken in both 3 piece boxes (I checked before leaving) and recently was shorted rolls in both dinners (did not check-wah!). So, make sure they give you what you ordered. This is the best chicken in the austin area. I drive all the way from springdale,which is close to the airport, just to get this chicken. I have a golden chick 5 min from my house and it does not compare to the one in oak hill. This is not to even metion the people. Everytime I go in there its like I'm family. This place is absolute garbage! The chicken is OK at best but the sides couldn't be any more fake and gross. Get the dark meat and bread and don't over eat. Don't touch the tenders or white meat or any of the other stuff. All you need is a fork and plenty of napkins. The absolute best chicken in the state. I don't know what the marinade is that's in the chicken, but it must be laced with crack. It is so addicting!!!!
