I have eaten here several times and I have no idea why the reviews are so bad unless it's just that only people with negative experiences are leaving reviews or haven't ever had Chinese buffet food. Most Chinese buffets I've tried have the same standard food with a few t new things here and there or without a few things others have, and golden chop sticks has a great variety with everything I'd want on a Chinese buffet. I can't think of one thing I've seen at other places they don't have and they have some extras like sushi and hibachi. The Chinese food is all good and of course some are hit and miss or I just don't like them in general. The food usually seems fresh when I've been between 11a-2p for lunch. The sushi is like every single Chinese buffet or grocery store sushi. It's basic and I wouldn't go there just for it but I do love that they have it and always get a few pieces but it's not going to be the same quality as a sushi restaurant. The general Chinese food options are always hot, fresh, and good. I've been to some Chinese restaurants that are a la carte and the standard there is higher because it's quality over quantity. As far as buffets go this is one of my favorites. I'm giving it 5 stars because they deserve to be higher than a 3 but in reality I'd say a solid 4 stars for a buffet. It hits the typical marks and then some. I think a solid 5 star Chinese buffet place would be hard to find. This is by far the best Chinese buffet in and around Abilene and beats out a lot of places I've tried in bigger cities. Also it's very spacious for large parties. The service has always been friendly and they've kept my drink full. At a buffet there's only so much I expect from the wait staff and that's about it. Spent 33.00 on fried rice and broccoli beef ordered bean sprouts in the fried rice and ordered 4 cups of extra brown sauce not in either thing no brown sauce in cups and no bean sprouts whatsoever! On top of all that the meat they call beef literally tasted like some sort of soggy sponge most definitely not beef, disgusting! I don't get it how do you go wrong with 3 ingredients? Broccoli beef and brown sauce? This was a horrible experience will never eat at this place again $33 bucks down the drain and I am about to throw it all in the trash! So sorry we have missed out in this place until tonight when we visit this area!! Look through all of my several HUNDRED reviews over the years (I live in the Metropolitan Phoenix area) and you will see ZERO good reviews for a Chinese buffet because I don't like any of the buffets out of the dozens, plus, choices available in my area!! We went tonight (New Year's Day evening) and although not super busy, everything was SUPER fresh and everything was kept SUPER fresh the entire time!!! We were all WOWED with the HUGE selection, the MANY unique items, the food, the taste, the freshness, the cleanliness, the service and the entire experience!!!! Seriously folks, if someone did a bad review, either they are affiliated with another area option and they are trying to bring the overall rating of this place down, or it was a freak off night here. We felt the love put into the food, and the care and concern about our experience when we visited tonight!!! Yesterday's review... My craving for today. We rarely eat out on a weekday, but too hot to cook. Hubby as usual says, "Whatever you want hunny." China Star was closed so we went to Chopsticks. It's hard to review a buffet because I feel like some places have good days and bad days. We came on a Sunday during dinner and it was surprisingly good. The honey chicken, pepper chicken and pepper steak were really good! There is a good variety! I have no complaints. The staff was very nice and we have a loud toddler with us. Everything was fresh. I've only had their food via delivery. But it was pleasantly surprising. Their fried dumplings were delicious with nice crispy texture. The cream cheese wantons have a sweet hint of honey. Their Mongolian beef isn't what I'm used to, but it was delicious. Garlic and onions/peppers in a rich sauce. The chicken fried rice was interesting (good way). So, 4 stars on the first visit. It must have been perfect timing, cause everything was hot and fresh. The Big grilled shrimp and the frog legs were fantastic. I was impressed. And yet another huge disappointment at this property. Took the entire family out for another try at Golden Chopsticks and will probably never go back. The place still looks nice and seemed to be clean however, not use to a hostess carrying a baby around for their shift. Also, all the food I tried was cold except for the egg rolls. I also had the boiled shrimp that was alright even though it didn't sit on ice but in cold water. The last time I was here some of the food had set in hot pans for way too long and got hard. This time I decided to go around 7:00pm to see if they had hot fresh food on the food bar. They did have lots of food choices but cold. Cooked chicken items we quite chewy, noodles tasted starchy and the teriyaki chicken borderline inedible. For one hour no waitress was in our area to refill drinks except one that was eating her dinner. At which time I called the restaurant for help with refills. The manager came back and asked why I hadn't asked the waitress sitting and eating to get our refills. It was obvious he was agitated speaking to us in Chinese we just left the drinks there not knowing what he was saying to us or what he might have done to our drinks. What a shame. We tried this new buffet on their second night open, which was a Saturday, and arrived to find a very crowded restaurant. The atmosphere and decor of the dining area is nice, very clean and modern looking. There are mostly tables with comfortable, large chairs and some booths. The tables are packed together a bit tightly for my liking, but considering how crowded the restaurant was, it serves the place well and there did not seem to be a long wait for a table. We came in on a night when crab legs were available, so that was my main desire of the night. The food that they offer was good, but on par with any other Chinese buffet. While I found the food to taste good, there was nothing that really made the buffet stand out. The selection was acceptable, but very similar to competing buffets. What I did like the most was the Egg Foo Young, the rice selection, and coconut-sauced shrimp. The sushi was good, but also comparable to what you would get at the grocery store. The steaks that are grilled were flavorful, but I was only able to get well done, which is disappointing. The crab legs were a tad over-steamed and mess to have a larger bin on the buffet. The crab leg bin was almost constantly empty. I did not try the hibachi, but the selection of meats, vegetables, and sauces looked pretty wonderful. While I'm certainly no expert in the food industry, I think I have a good sense of what gets people excited regarding food. And I think what this place needs is just a bit of a menu change. I think the crab legs were a big hit with people, so I recommend really making that the star item on the weekends. I also wish there were some more authentic items on the buffet. I don't mean to disrespect Abilene, but I worry that the Chinese restaurants feel they need to be more Americanized. What results is less-than-stellar food. I think Golden Chopsticks should embrace some more authentic Chinese dishes, such as dim sum, dumplings, and pork buns. I remember first trying those items in Chicago and being so enthralled by their taste. I think that would bring a unique quality to the newest Chinese restaurant in town. Some of the noodles seemed like the may have sat under the light a little too long and the donut rolls were very hard, but there were only three left. The food was about what you would expect from a Chinese Buffett. Not bad but not the greatest. The server was very friendly and attentive. We went on a Friday afternoon and paid the extra price for the crab legs, the only problem is it took a good hour for any to be put out. When they did bring some out it was a very small amount and only two people got some. It took another 30 min for more to come out and again it was a small portion with many people wanting some. Came in a little before 11 am on Sunday morning. We were the first ones in the door! Very friendly, clean and an amazing amount of food! To list a few, the normal egg rolls, cheese wontons, fruit table, sushi bar, hibachi, BBQ ribs, CRAB LEGS, fried rice, noodles, and pizza and corn dogs for the kids.
