Beef chow fun - this is excellent

Dined on 8/14/25. My wife and I (both are Chinese) stopped in Victoria during our cruise home from Alaska. We found Golden City Seafood Restaurant while walking outside of Chinatown (all the restaurants inside Chinatown are to touristy). You can tell a good Chinese restaurant if the staff and patrons are Chinese. The service is fast and friendly. The food is authentic Chinese with large tasty portions. The ambiance fits your stereotypical Chinese restaurant. We HIGHLY recommend this restaurant and we will be back the next time we visit Victoria, BC!

We were on a cruise to Alaska and this was a port stop. We wanted to visit China Town. It was a Saturday evening and the restaurant hours are till 10pm, we arrived about 8:20-8:30pm, we entered and seated and given tea. Menus on the table when they sat us and we decided very quickly. Nobody came back and clearly ignored us. After another 10 min goes but nothing. I left money on the table and left. Maybe they didn't want to serve non Chinese?

Food was great and portions were good. Kinda pricey for dimsum though. Very spacious. No lines during week day but the place filled up about 70% very quickly. Great for larger crowd.

Water spinach in spicy fermented tofu sauce

Vacationing in Victoria and this restaurant is close to the hotel and opening late. We ordered 1) water spinach in spicy fermented tofu sauce, very well executed. 2) Shrimp and scallop dumplings, quality ingredients and flavor, 3) chicken feet, standard flavor, and 4) taro dumplings with BBQ pork fillings. Inside looks great and the bathroom was clean.

=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE 3.5 stars: this may be home to the best dim sum in Victoria, though the overall experience is pending more visits to see if the consistency and improvements over the previous management keeps or increases the rating! === 2. FOOD The dim sum is at a different level that what you'll find on the Lower Mainland for both price (higher) and quality (lower), but the change in management suggests that there is the potential to cement the impression of Golden City being the best place for dim sum in Victoria. - Shrimp Dumplings: skin is a little thick, but tasty! - Pork Dumping (Sui Mai): generous with the shrimp on top. - Chicken Feet: alas, thin and chewy - didn't try more than one piece. - Rice Rolls: pleasantly presented with Shanghai bok choy. - Turnip Cake: it was OK. - Beef Chow Funn: it was good! No per-person tea charges. === 3. SERVICE The service seems better than what it was under previous management. The staff served in English and Cantonese, seemed a little nicer, and food came out at a reasonable time. === 4. ATMOSPHERE The place seemed a little dimmer than before, but the carpet seems to have been changed and the walls repainted. As before, small and large groups work out well (in fact, the portable wooden walls can create a separate area) and the restaurant is wheelchair/stroller friendly. Parking can be tough as the private (payment required) lot holds only a few cars, so a metered parking spot on the street may be needed.

So my mom's friend said this is one of the good Chinese restaurants in the area. Located in Victoria Chinatown area. The place is average size. Not too busy. Dim sum was alright. Size was ok for the price. Servers are not too alert. And...guess what I saw?! A mice running around the restaurant. Yup, I'm so glad it didn't run towards our table. I be screaming.

Review from a Chinese visitor from San Francisco. Came here after seeing good reviews and four stars. We ordered traditional Cantonese dishes to test this place out. The presentation of the food looked good, but that did not make up for the flavor. The lotus-wrapped rice we ordered wasn't heated properly. Chicken claws were dry. Beef intestines weren't washed properly, so there was still a light stench. The fish in our fish congee also had a slight smell. The XO noodles, ha gow, shrimp rice roll, and sui mai were probably the best out of all our dishes. Overall not worth the price. I'd recommend you try another place.

The food is amazing! This seems to be a legit place for locals, since we were the only non-Asian people in the restaurant.

The Golden City dim sum lunches are fairly fast service and taste pretty good. The style is in 1989/1990 renovation.

Parking is all metered on the street - note that the city has their parking enforcement office basically across the way working until 8pm, so put payment into the meters upfront even if you're coming by to do a quick pickup!

Instead, we decided to stay and enjoy a meal. We started with hot tea and soup. The soup was definitely the highlight of the meal--flavorful, comforting, and served nice and hot. For our entrees, we ordered the lo mein and a fried rice combo platter. The lo mein was just okay and didn't really stand out, but the fried rice combo platter was excellent and full of flavor. We thoroughly enjoyed that dish. The restaurant itself felt a little tight in terms of seating space, but the atmosphere was still pleasant. Despite not getting to try the bakery items we came for, we had a good time, enjoyed our meal, and left satisfied.
