We were craving real asian food after being on a cruise ship for a week and I looked up dim sum. This spot caught my eye since one of the reviews mentioned great food and terrible service - always a good sign to me for dim sum! It was busy but not packed on Sunday. We were able to get some classics right away from a cart - har gow was great. We also ordered off the menu by checking off items on a piece of paper. Golden City is a real good place to dine: - Hot & Sour soup: This place has about the absolute best hot & sour we've ever had anywhere. - bbq pork: a traditionally prepared dish that was very good. - Fried dumplings: Not the greatest dumpling I've ever had...but good enough. They had a real good dipping sauce to accompany. - duck: This duck dish was real good. We certainly we like this place. It was our first time in Victoria and we were looking for good Chinese food, luckily we found Golden City! When we arrived around 7pm the restaurant was not busy at all! I think it would probably be busier at lunch since they do have a dim sum menu. We ordered off the dim sum menu because I was hungry for it and they still offered it. From the regular menu I just got stir fry pea vines. The pea vines were crunchy and garlicky. They were to my liking. On the dim sum menu we got tripe, Xiao long Bao, omasum, har gow, chicken feet, and ham sui gok. My favorites on the dim sum menu were the tripe, Xiao long Bao, and chicken feet. The omasum was a bit too chewy and needed to be cooked long because I also had a hard time eating it. Everything else filled me up quickly and they were a great late night eat! Overall, Golden City is a standard place for Chinese food. The employees were nice but it's easier to talk to them if you have another mandarin speaker with you. Stumbled upon this Cantonese restaurant when craving Chinese foods in Victoria. Ambiance is typical of a dim sum restaurant in Chinatown Vancouver. I love lamb and liked their lamb dish - we can choose the way it is cooked and it was delicious. We found Golden City Seafood Restaurant while walking outside of Chinatown (all the restaurants inside Chinatown are to touristy). You can tell a good Chinese restaurant if the staff and patrons are Chinese. The service is fast and friendly. The food is authentic Chinese with large tasty portions. We were on a cruise to Alaska and this was a port stop. We wanted to visit China Town. It was a Saturday evening and the restaurant hours are till 10pm, we arrived about 8:20-8:30pm, we entered and seated and given tea. Menus on the table when they sat us and we decided very quickly. Nobody came back and clearly ignored us. After another 10 min goes but nothing. I left money on the table and left. Maybe they didn't want to serve non Chinese? read more

Pretty standard dimsum place. A lot cleaner than many with decent food. The shu mai was excellent as were the BBQ pork buns. The Pineapple buns were a little dry but very tasty. The har gow and the shrimp rice rolls were quite under-seasoned unfortunately and needed soy and vinegar to help. Tried a few other things like the pan friend shrimp and chive dumplings, the shrimp and scallop dumpling, etc. There were all pretty standard. Their chili oil is absolutely delicious. Do not eat here if you are white or black. They seem to only serve Asians. I don't typically ever give negative reviews. This place is ridiculous, we came in at about 10:45AM maybe three tables, I asked if they had DimSum waiter said yes. We received water immediately. Then nothing, no waiter or waitress, no carts even though he said there would be. We filled out their little form and nothing, several people seated after us already have food. We are white and fairly affluent. almost seems like they don't want white people in there restaurant. finally after 25 minutes a gal comes over and takes our paper. We almost walked out. Now awaiting some food. They bring out custard. Typically at the end of the meal, apparently they serve these first. So now it is 30 minutes later still no food other than desert. WTF? Finally grabbed somebody and asked where our food is, seems confused. Two minutes later we get some cold pork wrapped with rice. Food is barely edible. Shrimp dish they just brought is even worse. By the time we received our four dishes they were cold and tasted like shit. So we have now been here 55 minutes. We finally received Bland shitty food mostly rice dough with very little actual nutrients. Place is a joke if you're white or black, if there are no Asians with you they don't seem to want to serve you. Not that they care but we will never come back. They seem to have a significant communication problem. We ask for our bill and they immediately show up with a machine. The presentation of the food looked good, but that did not make up for the flavor. The lotus-wrapped rice we ordered wasn't heated properly. Chicken claws were dry. Beef intestines weren't washed properly, so there was still a light stench. The fish in our fish congee also had a slight smell. The XO noodles, ha gow, shrimp rice roll, and sui mai were probably the best out of all our dishes. Overall not worth the price. I'd recommend you try another place. read more

Just a little over a block away from the heart of Chinatown, we tried this restaurant for dim sum. It wasn't busy for a Thursday afternoon, so we sat right away. Lots of seating and atmosphere seems pretty newly remodeled. We ordered via a checkoff menu. If you're not familiar with items, you might need some guidance. We have been to many dim sum restaurants, so we knew what we wanted to order. Food came out quickly and looked and tasted delicious. The items were very fresh in flavor. Pleasantries were typical of a Chinese restaurant, but the staff was generally attentive. Uniforms seemed to look more like pajamas, so I think that should be something to improve upon for a higher class establishment. Prices were reasonable. This is the best Dim Sum I have had in years. Our friends made reservations, so we had no idea what to expect. Reservations were at 10:30am (that's when the open on Sundays) so that we could make our flight in the afternoon. They have a paid lot right next to their building for parking. Although they weren't open, we were able to get inside and seated a few minutes early. Friends shared that new owners have taken over the restaurant. Also, it's Hong Kong style. Nevertheless, for the next 2 hours, fresh dumplings, buns, etc were brought out. It was wonderful. Food is great! My favorite was the yang chow fried rice. Try the beef with mushrooms. That one was a family favorite too and was the first to disappear from the table. We also ordered the seafood with winter melon and that was a good starter. Also try the crispy noodles chow mien. you'd have to wait and catch the server's attention. To be honest I'd love to give these guys the benefit of the doubt, but after reading other 1 or 2 star reviews I'd say we had a typical experience. Had reservations and were seated at a table without a menu (first red flag), place is barely busy. So the trolley comes by and we select, get four dishes, eat them (party of 4) and then NOTHING (no acknowledgement no nothing in spite of staff buzzing by to serve everyone else) for about 45 minutes. Plenty of tea water. I finally had to ask a speeding wait staff for a menu, we ordered, and then ANOTHER 45 minutes to get served. Asked for some bao and they never even came back. Asked for a bill and they said pay at the counter. NO communication about any of this without sustained inquiry. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL customer service, and I never use all caps. I don't know if this would have been different if we had been with regular patrons, but I sincerely doubt I'll be back or recommend it, and you know what- I don't think they care. Go somewhere where they respect their customers, even new ones. Worst wasted two hours of my life. For a 45 minute meal. Do better folks, I'm not going back. read more

The Golden City dim sum lunches are fairly fast service and taste pretty good. The style is in 1989/1990 renovation.

I highly recommend this restaurant for Dim Sum. The servers were friendly and the food was delicious and very hot.

On the 2nd port stop of our Cruise, we decided to check out Chinatown in Victoria to see what kind of Chinese cuisine that Victoria can offer. For some reason, Chinatowns in any city tend to have that Red Gate and Lions welcoming you to its location, and Victoria is no exception. We asked around (didn't use iPhone Yelp app since it would cost $$$ to download data in Canada since they are considered outside of the USA) and this place seems to be the place for Chinese food. This place is about 2 blocks away from the actual Chinatown in Victoria, and it was located in a classier and cleaner part of town. We walked in and saw many Chinese people eating here, which was a good sign since you never want to go to a Chinese restaurant and see too many Non-Chinese people. We got seated and the hostess was very friendly and nice. The waiter, on the other hand, was definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed. We ordered the Steam Fish, Shrimp with Walnuts, Beef with greens, Tofu Soup, and a Coke. For some strange reason, the waiter brought out a Braised Tofu and egg dish instead of the Tofu soup (???!). Sorry pal, we didn't order this dish and asked to waiter to take it away. He fumbled a bit and acted as though we did order the dish, and that he was doing us a favor by not charging us the dish that we never ordered or ate in the first place! And then our waiter never brought out the Coke that we did order. I didn't want to seem like a problem customer so I just let this one slide. The food was a but overpriced, compared to the prices in Los Angeles. I mean, the 3 dishes cost around $70 USD total. However, in BC Canada, the tax rate for restaurant is only 5%, so at least you save some money on food tax. The sales tax for merchandise, however, is at 12%. To all patrons of Golden City since 1989. On behalf of Vicky Low -Manager/Owner and Derick Chui - Executive Chef/Owner, I would like to announce that the restaurant is now under new Ownership and Management. The transition started in March of 2018 and was fully completed in August 2018. They were grateful in being able to feed 3 and 4 generations of families in the 280 seat restaurant. My mother, Vicky Low and her longtime business partner/ Executive Chef Derick Chui made a difficult choice to step away from their "baby" after almost 30 years of ownership. Even though there were many other "Partners" coming and going throughout the years, these two were the main faces that were seen on a daily basis and ensured that the business ran like an well oiled machine. They wanted to thank each and every one of their customers and friends for their support over the years. It was an experience for them to initially see a couple get married at the restaurant, then hold a "red Egg" party for their newborn, then see them host a wedding for that new born many years later, and finally seeing that married child bring their own baby into the restaurant for a red egg party.
