Gungo Po chicken and braised pork

Great little place with a diner atmosphere and amazing food. We had the gung po chicken and braised pork which were both excellent. It's a smaller menu but quality and delicious food. Owners were both very nice as well!

All of the reviews saying this is the best Chinese food they have had outside of China are correct! Everything was super fresh, light, and perfectly seasoned. The beef was tender and the tofu was soft on the inside but toasted on the outside. Their staff is also super nice and service was quick. Would love to come back!

We're visiting Victoria for just 2 days. Our wonderful airbnb is a short walk away. We arrived within a 1/2 hr of opening (open @ 3). Our meal was delicious! We enjoyed veggie chow menu, gung pao chicken, deep fried wings.

    Garlic shrimp spring rolls

We were in Victoria for a day, and stopped in here for some food based on Yelp reviews. It was just my husband and me, a party of four, and a party of two. The only people working in the restaurant were the husband and wife team. They were nice and polite. Because there were only two people working, service was a bit slow. However, this allowed my husband and I to talk and enjoy our meal. We ordered the shrimp spring rolls as an appetizer, but they came out after we'd gotten an entree. Basically, the food comes out when it comes out. The husband is the one cooking each dish--one at a time. Again, no harm no foul, but if you're in a rush, this might not be the place for you. As far as the food goes, it was okay. It wasn't GREAT, but it was fine. As I mentioned we got the shrimp spring rolls (four stars/get those!), gung pao chicken (two stars), pork belly (four stars), shrimp fried rice (three stars). The gung pao was my least favorite because the bell peppers were so hard (they weren't cooked all the way) and there were so many bell peppers! Plus, the peanuts were just tossed in at the end of the dish and weren't cooked with the dish. The shrimp fried rice was mediocre, but the pork belly had a great taste and it was one of the better entrees.

Instead, we decided to stay and enjoy a meal. We started with hot tea and soup. The soup was definitely the highlight of the meal--flavorful, comforting, and served nice and hot. For our entrees, we ordered the lo mein and a fried rice combo platter. The lo mein was just okay and didn't really stand out, but the fried rice combo platter was excellent and full of flavor. We thoroughly enjoyed that dish. The restaurant itself felt a little tight in terms of seating space, but the atmosphere was still pleasant. Despite not getting to try the bakery items we came for, we had a good time, enjoyed our meal, and left satisfied. We'll definitely come back earlier next time to try some of those bakery specialties before they sell out! Service was great tho.. very cheerful

Sweet and sour pork and vegetables with meat had flavour. Partner was not happy with food. Soy sauce added to make food tasty. Usually when I order from most other restaurants I never add soy sauce because food is tasty when dish arrives. Plus most chefs are offended when you add condiment before tasting a dish. Chinese tea and fortune cookies were provided. Restaurant only had a couple of other sit down diners when we arrived. Staff was nice. Will order different dishes and dishes with with BBQ meat if I ever go back to see if cooks were having an off day today. Been awhile since I ate here. Entire bill was paid but my partner wanted cost reduced due to disappointment of dishes. Tables were a bit tight for larger parties but everybody appeared to be enjoying themselves still. Steady flow of customers that were tourists and locals to pick up, delivery service and purchased goods (meat and pastries) to enjoy outside of restaurant. Walls were nicely painted. Tables were clean. Located in Chinatown where there is street and parking lots. Partner is interested in trying meats at home in the future. In the past I purchased their BBQ meats, duck, etc. along with pastries to enjoy at home that were always tasty.

FOOD We've tried a variety of things and overall it's been solid: - Chicken Corn Soup ($12.95): solid choice - Mushroom, Peas, Egg Drop Soup: ($11.95): even better! - Dumplings (10, $12.95): nice and meaty. - BBQ Pork Chow Fun: good pork, wish there was more pork; noodles OK. - Beef & Broccoli ($18.95): feels pricey but it's solid. - Assorted Meat Chow Fun ($17.95): best value if you're doing noodles! - Prawns & Snow Peas ($19.95): good option as an entree! - House Special Chop Suey ($15.95): I guess it's supposed to be veg with some meat? === 3. SERVICE We've never dined in; only gotten takeout - but the service has always been good. Like other Chinese restaurants in Victoria, the time indicated for our order to ready seems to be a lot longer than say Vancouver, Toronto, or even Honolulu. But everyone answering the phone and serving at the counter speaks English well and it seems like they can speak Mandarin also. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's spartan in a good way - big, open, and clean without the gaudy overly-Chinese decor that often accompanies the Chinese restaurant stereotype. A large fish tank at the front (likely for Feng Sui purposes) offers some distraction for younger kids. Those with wheelchairs and baby strollers should have not challenges here. The complex they are in seems to have plenty of parking - we've never seen the lot full, so that helps if you're driving!

We arrived at 11:01, right after they opened, and were greeted by steaming-hot dim sum being pushed around on traditional carts. Everything we ordered was fantastic.
