Iffy service, pretty solid food. My family and I weren't feeling any of the nearby restaurants at our hotel. Then we decided to visit the small Chinatown in the Victoria area. To make our 3-hour visit there worth it, we wanted to have dinner here, and I don't regret finding this place; it was awesome eating here! The inside is mildly bright with many tables for seating but it also feels oddly quiet inside given the number of people inside (it was halfway to a full house). You'll also see some wall decorations and figures at the front. Service here was pretty slow; it took 15 minutes for my mom and sis's dishes to come out, and nearly 25 minutes for the first portion of my dish. Sometimes my server was pretty busy to take some of my requests like getting a spoon or the check. As for my food, I got the traditional Crossing the Bridge rice noodles, with the standout items being the Yunnan pork and raw pork for me. My ingredients for this dish came out in 25 min, with the soup and coming out 10 minutes later and the noodles following a couple minutes after that. With the way everything but the noodles were being brought out, I was worried the soup would start getting cold by the time I threw everything else into the soup. Looking past all of that, the whole thing was actually delicious! Soup wasn't sour and instead felt very homely, and the amount of ingredients was perfect. The soup wasn't in any sort of stone pot to keep it really hot, but everything ended up being fully cooked before i started eating. Others things to mention: - We got two orders of wonton soup. These don't include noodles, and the wontons looked pretty bland even though they're actually full of taste. - My mom's zhajiang noodles came in soup, which is definitely a first since I usually see it without. - Portions in general are quite small though they aren't as expensive when looking between CAD and USD. A tough menu to navigate when you're used to the Chinese restaurants in the USA. But when the food shows up it's a 10. Beef brisket was outstanding as well as the fried dumplings and Rice noodles. Not the most upbeat environment, but I didn't come to make friends and what I did come for didn't disappoint, very flavorful and filling. Amazing place! They have various options but their signature item is the Yunnanese make your own soup and they have a vegetarian option. It is kind of a blend between Chinese Hot Pot and Pho and not surprising given Yunnan's proximity to Vietnam. I had the beef version and my mom had the vegetarian one. The ambiance was nice and the staff was friendly. The only downside is they close early on Saturday night at 8pm so we had to finish up before they closed. It is great that the oldest Chinatown in Canada and the second oldest in North America has such unique food I have not had before. For the small city Victoria is it is great that the food by far beats that our declining Chinatown in Washington, DC. read more

This is only the second 5 star review I've given to a Chinese restaurant because my family owned a Chinese restaurant business for over 25+ years so I'm super picky about Chinese restaurants. We came on New Years Eve and I called to confirm if they open until 7:30PM as stated on Google. The girl on the phone said they might close early at 7pm depending on business so we decided to come as early as possible so the workers can go home early for the holiday! We ordered the vegetarian crossing the bridge noodles with chicken broth ($16.99), a side of rice noodles ($3), homemade broth ($2.99). It was so good that we had to throw in a wonton soup since it's handmade - 12 pieces for $15.99 and comes with a few broccoli and carrot pieces. I think the price point was reasonable and I asked them if they put msg in the broth. They said they don't use msg and their broth is made in house by using crushed shrimp powder. The won tons are made fresh each day and they wrap it right before you order it so it came out a bit later for us. The peel isn't homemade but if you pay extra for the dumplings they make their own peel as well. Overall, great restaurant to dine and literally almost every table was filled when we dined on a holiday. The broth came out super hot which made it easy to pour the ingredients in and have it cook. My pet peeve is lukewarm or even just warm soup but it was piping hot. I also ordered a side of broth and noodles and this would be perfect for a kids menu option too. this place is like going to your 80 year old Chinese grandma's house for home-cooking. I planned my trip to Victoria and when I included walking around Chinatown, I knew I had to eat at Little Yunnan. I saw the eye grabbing "crossing the bridge rice noodle" dish on their menu that drew me in. I ordered A2, beef crossing the bridge rice noodles. The meats and vegetables arrive in individual small bowls to pour into the hot soup (don't worry the broth is hot enough to cook the meat and veggies thoroughly). They have helpful instructions on the table if it's your first time, and the waiter/staff are very friendly and helpful. The hot broth warmed my soul (literally and figuratively). The flavor is so light and delicious, I was craving a healthy filling meal that wasn't heavy or greasy. Just perfect! There really is nothing like a hot broth soup with quality meat and vegetables on a chilly PNW day. Seeing the great reviews we decided to check this place out and have a cool experience with our dinner. The experience was there, the service was good, but unfortunately we really didn't enjoy the food. In fact my partner stopped to get a cheap slice of pizza on the way back to our hotel. We ordered the vegetarian crossing the bridge soup and the peanut noodles. The noodles in both dishes had a texture that we didn't enjoy. They were thick and kind of squishy - unlike any rice noodles I've had before. The broth for the soup had very little flavor. I just ate the tofu and some of the vegetables. The peanut noodles were a bit better, the sauce had a bit more flavor and the noodles were slightly better outside the soup, but not by much. We did enjoy the green tea. In the end I'm glad we had the experience, but I wouldn't do it again. read more

The restaurant is in an older building with a decent sized seating area. If you're looking for "Panda Express" or "Famous Wok" style food, this restaurant is probably not for you. The flavors are very authentic, nothing like we get at chain restaurants. We were seated right away and given menu's. My husband picked wonton soup and I picked the beef rice/noodle broth soup. Both were served pretty quickly. My broth soup was delicious. The big chunks of beef were so tender and I was able to "break them down" easily with my chopsticks. The amount of vegetables in the soup was perfect and they were soft and not mushy. Broth was homey and flavourful. You dump the quail egg in first, followed by the meat and then the rest of the vegetables and rice noodles. Definitely worth a try. - Stewed beef rice noodle soup (C6) ($15.99) - there's a spicy icon on the menu but zero heat (as we expected). Add the chili oil if you want a small kick. The 6 pieces of stewed beef were decently tender but some bites were a touch on the dry side. Broth was simple and didn't entice the taste buds. Would skip this one and try C5 instead. - Handmade rice ball (D1) ($4.99) - rice balls with black sesame and peanut filling. Decent. A lovely restaurant in Chinatown! I got their classic dish, and it was lovely. It was pretty unique, where they give you a deconstructed soup and you add in all the ingredients yourself. My friend and I were in Victoria on a cold windy November night, and I desperately wanted something hot and soupy to warm up my soul. Luckily we came across Little Yunnan in Chinatown, and it was exactly what I wanted/needed! The menu is two pages, but I didn't bother looking at it closely as I knew I wanted the Guo Qiao Mi Xian (Crossing the Bridge noodles). I went to Yunan last year and had the real deal there, and was excited to try it here as well. Essentially it's a rice noodle soup with a broth so hot that it cooks all of the fillings, which are served in small small dishes on the side. I went with A1, the traditional version ($12.99), while my friend went with the vegetarian version for $11.99. I was super excited they had a vegetarian version for him so he could also try it out!! The food came out super quick. My friend went to the bathroom after we ordered to wash his hands and they started bringing out the broth before he came back lol I had a lot of fun dumping everything into the broth, though it seemed like a lot of unnecessary dish cleaning for the staff to do later. I don't remember what all of the small items were, but my favorites were the pork, pickled veggies, and the bamboo shoots. The broth tasted great as well, as the mi xian (noodles) were as soft as I remember them being when I had this last year. If I'm ever in Victoria I'd definitely come by here again!
