I was really hoping to love I Kyu Noodles, but unfortunately, our experience fell short. We stopped by on a quiet summer Sunday around 11 a.m., when not too many other places in Chinatown were open. There was only one other table seated, so we were able to get a table right away. The menu is quite large, and we ordered the pork dan dan noodles and garlic cucumber salad. Service was very slow. It seemed like there may have only been one person cooking, as dishes came out one at a time, and ours arrived about 30 minutes after ordering. When the food did arrive, the flavors didn't quite land. The dan dan noodles were bland, and the cucumber salad tasted more like plain cucumber with some sauce; it didn't seem marinated or seasoned. A friend who used the washroom mentioned it was in rough shape and lacked a way to properly wash hands. Thankfully, she had hand sanitizer with her. I really wanted to support this spot, but between the underwhelming food, long wait, and lack of cleanliness, I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending it at this time. We visited this restaurant on a rainy Tuesday afternoon because we wanted something warm and comforting. Unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. The first red flag came when our hot tea arrived in a cup that still had lipstick marks on it. Seeing such an obvious hygiene issue immediately made us question the restaurant's cleanliness standards. The food was even worse. My husband ordered the beef soup. Calling it "beef soup" is generous--it tasted like plain hot water with salt. There were only a few tiny pieces of beef floating in an otherwise flavorless broth. My daughter ordered wonton soup. The wontons tasted exactly like the cheapest frozen wontons from a supermarket, with no freshness or quality whatsoever. I ordered the eggplant rice. The eggplant appeared poorly cleaned, was swimming in oil, and had virtually no flavor other than salt. It was greasy, carelessly prepared, and completely unappetizing. Poor hygiene, poor ingredients, poor cooking, and prices that are not justified by the quality. I honestly don't understand how this place stays in business. If you enjoy wasting money on disappointing food and don't care about cleanliness or taste, then you might enjoy eating here. For everyone else, do yourself a favor and stay away. One star is only because zero stars is not an option. read more

There were 4 broccoli, one tiny piece of carrot and a few strands of Napa cabbage. Broth was just not great. My home miso from a package has more character. Nice ambiance, comfy seating in the booths ... but loses 1 star for limited combinations allowed, no hot tea or alcohol for dinner service, and very limited selection of soft drinks. I had a decent meal here. Kind service. The Dan Dan Mein was okay - all very fresh ingredients, a little skimpy on the ground pork, excellent textures. ...but ultimately quite boring. Vastly under seasoned. By the end of the meal the dish had just become a vessel for the chili oil and hoisin they brought me to liven it up. Clean, affordable, and good tea. We got the soup dumplings/XLB to go. We didn't end up eating them until several hours later. Admittedly, the flavor was decent for being cold. And they probably also suffered losing the soup inside eating them cold as well. The skin was fairly thick, slightly thicker than expected. We ordered the miso ramen and the coconut chicken noodle, after reading rave reviews about it. The miso ramen arrived first, and I definitely agree that it had one of the best presentations I've seen, and the miso broth was also very well done. The noodles were slightly soggy, which led to some absorption of the broth, but it ended up not being a huge deal. The coconut chicken noodle actually used the same noodle as the ramen, and the broth definitely had the distinct coconut taste. I somewhat wish the bowl was less of a giant plate, because the size was quite large, yet the ingredients weren't so. Washrooms are in the second floor, and are quite family-oriented with the private booths. However I had to press the flush handle quite hard in order for the toilet to flush. Service was excellent the entire time I was there. For Victoria standards, this place is definitely a must-try for those visiting the city. read more

The noodles presented was not the same as the pictures on menu at all. I ordered chicken cutlet noodle, and it looks like teriyaki chicken, and bak choy is replaced by broccoli?! There is also a large rock like substance found which I'm guessing and hopefully is, a salt chunk. The restaurant was pretty crowded at lunch time on weekend. I come to Victoria a few times a year and always head straight to I Kyu. My favourite dish is the hot & sour noodles with shrimp - loads of tender & chewy noodles, some classic simple veg, and an outstanding rich and lightly tangy broth. Nostalgic decor, and there are always either a Dave Brubeck or a Diana Krall live concert video playing on loop on a small tv. I'm allergic to MSG and noodle places are often tricky or impossible for me, but I've never had a problem at I Kyu. You can buy their housemade noodles to cook at home for a great price, but you're not gonna beat their broth! read more

Today my kids and I stopped in for a quick lunch, I had been once before a year ago, and have been craving it ever since. The 3 of us had an assortment of food and drinks, and everything was fantastic. The menu seems to take the best offerings from different Asian cuisines and it all works together. From kimchi to edamame, fried peanut noodles to gyoza ~ everything was delicious. It's now my 11yr old sons favourite place and he is already excited to bring dad along next time. I just happened to go in here the other day, and I was pleasantly surprised. For me the draw was the sign in the window advertising a 4th generation noodle maker who makes everything fresh daily. Since Konpira closed I was worried about that I would not find a place in Victoria to eat genuinely fresh and delicious udon noodles. Anyways, the udon noodles here are delicious. They are made fresh daily, as are the wontons (which were also great). The interior looks a little dated, but is clean and since they are just getting on their feet I'm sure it will change as they get busier. The service was super friendly. The awesome thing is that they sell everything in store, so you can take it home too. You can get a container of their udon for like $2, the pork juicy buns are 30 for $9 and they have a freezer and display case full of all the other delicious things they make (including dressing, kimchi, gyoza, wontons etc.) read more

I would say that this is a one star place but for the amazing old school Chinese decor and a trying waitress, I will give it two stars. It first says that it has famous authentic HK style won ton noodles soup- it does not. It isn't even the right noodles to start with. The chef comes from Hk? That doesn't mean he can make the authentic ones. I am Canadian and I don't even know if I can make authentic Canadian poutine. And the wonton was not the authentic HK style wonton with the longer tail. The washroom is actually something worth for you to go into this restaurant. It leads you up to this narrow tall staircase upstairs and just makes you think you are in some horror movie. It is exciting and scary at the same time. Nothing bad, it is clean, but reminds me that I am in a movie. I do recommend the shanghai buns as they are good but not the best, but pretty decent and bite sized. I have heard that the beef noodles are good so I will give them a chance next time as well. Come and check it out yourselves, but don't order the won ton noodles. I stumbled upon this little gem by fluke on a chilly fall day while visiting Victoria. I was craving a warm bowl of soup and a cozy spot to eat it in. Little did I expect to find some of the best homemade noodles and Chinese dumplings (prepared by the very charming and talented chef Carlos Chan - a 4th generation noodle maker no less!) that I've ever had. Exquisite, melt in your mouth noodles and the broth on their Wonton soup intensely flavourful, well balanced and not too salty. Located on Fisgard street just as you enter Victoria's Chinatown off Government, it's evidently a well frequented haunt of the neighborhood's cognoscenti. Do not pass up any opportunity to stop in or pick up takeout of these simply divine noodles and dumplings. Heck, it's even worth a trip over to Victoria for their Wonton soup alone. However, if you do, just make sure to phone ahead to ensure he's open. Noodle wizard that he is, apparently his hours are a tad inconsistent. read more

While standing in an hour-long line to return a cable box to Shaw, I engaged in a conversation with a man from the prairies who complained about the poor quality and inauthenticity of Chinese restaurants in Victoria. I then recommended I Kyu Noodles to him, despite only dining there once. The restaurant itself is unassuming, complete with dark red decor that hasn't been updated since the 1930s. But I greatly enjoyed my noodle dish, which featured some sort of spiced ground pork, over fresh chow mein noodles. And garlic was involved somewhere. And the best part was that it wasn't too greasy. Something falls short for me here, even though I love everything about it. It's short of being 5 stars because the menu feels a little paltry, I guess. The noodles are good and handmade, and I respect that above all else, but there's just a limited variety of ways to experience them. Worse, there's a dilettante feel about the soups, being several different kinds of soup outright, but not, say, the outward sign of commitment and competency of the usual assortment of ramen options. There's a fridge with fresh noodles you can take home and prepare any way you like, and I think that's probably the way to go, although the proprietor of the imports shop next door insists that you should just make your own noodles rather than buying them there, because it's not that hard. Frankly, making good noodles is damn hard, and I Kyu (cute name and all) does succeed well at that task. read more

Looking for a good Chinese food place, my fiancé and I decided to go to I Kye Noodles based on the reviews of handmade noodles. We just missed the lunch rush and as the waitress was busy cleaning tables, the owner comes out from the kitchen, greeted us and talked to us for a few minutes. He made excellent recommendations and then went to the kitchen to make our food. It was delicious! We shared the shanghai noodles and the Dan Dan Mein. As well as the pork buns and spring rolls. Everything was great and the owner/cook/noodle maker was very friendly. We left there happy and stuffed with deliciousness. I wish we had something like this back home. read more

OMG you must come here. The hours aren't posted, so I'm not sure when they open. We strolled by at 11am, and they weren't open yet, but a quick walk around the block, and 10 mins later, they magically opened. The place itself is small, but they make great use of it, and has plentiful seating without feeling squished. Anyway, we tried the cocount chicken noodle, pork dumplings, and Dan dan mein (pork) and omfg they were all amazing. The cocount chicken noodle had amazing flavors, and of course the noodles were perfect. The dumplings were also great, but I think my favorite was the vinegar dipping sauce that came with them. The Dan dan mein was delish as well, with plentiful noodles and pork that complement each other really well. Note this place is cash only, so be prepared. Was very excited to eat here because of the high reviews, but was very disappointed. The shrimp salad was more or less a cold salad microwaved with a bland mayo-ey sauce. We added the chilli sauce to make it okay. The chicken teriyaki was fine. We ordered the kimchi to start, but it never arrived. We waited a long time for the main courses. The waitress never brought the bills or told us how to pay. The atmosphere was odd. We were the only ones there (on a Tuesday night though) and there was no music. Working in the inner harbour there's no shortage of tourist traps downtown, and Chinatown is no exception...however, this place is awesome and a rare find! The food was flavourful and plentiful, plus the no msg/preservatives was a bonus. Good sized portions and great value; I took half of mine to go. I tried the coconut chicken noodle (apparently their signature dish) and loved it. Great coconut milk broth, lots of chicken and veg, and homemade noodles. You can taste the homemade freshness of the noodles, made on site by Chef Carlos. My coworker and I split an order of pan fried gyozas to start as well...best ever. We normally drive all the way over to Fujiya for our weekly gyoza fix (where they're served cold and steamed), but these were fresh from the hot pan and perfectly crisp. Yum!
