Twenty six years ago I moved off the Island & headed to Florida. There are a million Chinese takeout places in South Florida but none can compare to NY Chinese food. I realize I have been living in Florida half my life, but I never forgot how great REAL Chinese food is. I read the reviews on this takeout place and I am very surprised at the poor reviews. We always get takeout so I can't comment on the cleanliness, but I can and will comment on the terrific food. I was just reminded I did stop in once a few years ago, but I don't remember what the place looked like because I was in shock that the Starbucks in the same plaza didn't have a drive through. Let me tell you about what I have tried. Both the mixed wonton/eggdrop and regular wonton soup are wonderful. The ribs are phenomenal. Egg rolls are good, but I havnt had them in a long time. Chicken Chow Mein is my absolute favorite dish & the Roast Pork Lo Mein is really good. The Roast Pork with Chinese Vegetables & the General Tso's Chicken are good too. I'm on the Island a lot & Chinese food is a must have, even more so than pizza. I love Golden Express and I crave it when I am in Florida, I really do. I stick with the old school dishes because I grew up eating Chow Mein & Lo Mein & don't even get me started on the ribs. Tonight they were absolutely sensational, the best ever. So good! My family is telling me to make it clear that this is the best takeout in the area; but not as good as some other places that are a little further away. For this Florida chic, Golden Express is very good. Who knows, maybe if I still lived in NY I would be writing something different. Located in the horrible parking lot with Starbucks and la focaccia my coworkers and I decided to come here for some lunch specials. Lunch specials come with an entree, rice, soup or a can of soda or an egg roll for $.50 more. Most of the lunch specials are around $8. (Meh) I went for the moo goo gai pan with brown rice. I asked for my sauce on the side because I don't like it drowned in sauce. I also got the wonton soup which was half the size of most Chinese places and came with only 2 wontons and broth no pork or scallions. The sauce that came with my entree was brown and had scallions and I'm used to having white sauce with moo goo gai pan I prefer it with white sauce. Their brown sauces are also very liquidy and not thick. Steamed pork dumplings were ok, but I didn't care for the dipping sauce. The place is very grungy. My problem is the place is not clean. Leftover food and cooking supplies were in the dining area. The kitchen is a mess. The floor is filthy. Last week we took out from Golden Express. In the past we had been satisfied but our memories of Golden Express were better than our experience this time. We ordered Egg Drop Soup, Egg Rolls, Steamed Dumplings and Fried Dumplings, Sesame Chicken, Pepper Steak with Onion and Roast Pork Fried Rice. In addition, we asked for the house mustard and some duck sauce. What we got was disappointment . The Egg Drop Soup, Fried Dumplings and Fried Rice were simply OK. The Sesame Chicken and Pepper Steak were both very fatty. It was difficult to find a piece of meat that did not have this problem. They also forgot to put the mustard and duck sauce in the package even though this was part of the discussion with the man at the counter. Considering that the two main portions were so bad it's unlikely that we will take food out from Golden Express again. read more

Not much in terms of quick take out style eateries along Broadhollow either in Melville or Farmingdale. Had a craving for General Tso's and this was the only Chinese joint to show up on my GPS in about a 5 mile area (I was in Farmingdale). I headed over and parked in their convenient lot (though I'm sure it gets busy during the day with Starbucks next door). The place has a few tables to sit at, a television, and what looked like a very clean restroom, things you dont find back in Queens. The General Tso's took a bit longer than average to make, but it was as requested extra spicy and was really delicious. The chicken was large pieces of juicy white meat chicken, not the small doughy pieces you sometimes get. The rice was on par and had a nice taste, not overly oily or hard. The delivery time was below average (1 hour and 11 minutes). The delivery Driver was below average, he was unable to make change as he only had 3 singles on him, the rest was Tens or higher causing me to have to tip him 34.3% ($3.69) as opposed to the 15.7% ($1.69) as I had intended. (few places do) Must try an Egg Roll, it is the Only place I will get them (spoiled). Prices are reasonable and similar to local restaurants of the same caliber. One of my favorite chinese food takeouts by far around me :) i have never been to the actual place as i always pre-order through the phone and get someone to pick it up or just get it delivered. i have never had a problem with their service let alone their food :) they even have my address on file when i order through the same number which is a plus! i've had better tasting chinese before that is why it gets a 4 out 5 but i think everyone has their own acquired taste when it comes to takeout food. p.s: the delivery guy is so so friendly even if my dog is barking up a storm :) read more

I had a late night at work and we decided to get Chinese take out for dinner. There aren't many Chinese takeouts in the Melville area, so we decided to try Golden Express. We ordered several dishes for pickup, and we out the door and back to the office in less than 15 minutes. Food was a little expensive here, my order consisted of Beef & Broccoli special combination for $7.35 which includes rice and an egg roll, and a pint of hot & sour soup for $2.25. The beef was flavorful and usual as expected from a Chinese takeout, but quite a few pieces were on the chewy side from all the muscle strands in the meat. Broccoli was cooked perfectly, soft but with a nice crunch to it. The hot & soup soup was a big disappointment. As soon as I took it out of the bag, I could tell it was overdosed with soy sauce, as the soup was very dark in color. After my first spoonful, it was your typical hot & sour soup with mushrooms, chinese fungus, tofu, chicken, but slightly on the salty side. After a couple spoonfuls, the saltiness left my mouth wanting to eat rice and drink water. Overall, ordering and pickup turnaround time was very quick but the food was disappointing and a bit overpriced. I will probably avoid this place in the future and keep my eyes open for better places in the area. read more

This is the epitome of excellence in the Chinese Restaurant business. The entire place is very clean (I have seen them literally scrub the floors, tables, and appliances on multiple occasions). The staff is very friendly and reliable and always willing to help in any possible way. Golden Express is family owned for over 18 years and all family members put in their time and make the place very inviting. Don't even bother! Ordered the seafood combination take out. Menu says Lobster, scallops, jumbo shrimp and mixed veggies. $11.50. When I picked up they asked for $14.50. Didnt question it, just thought the online menu was out of date. When I got home I found no lobster, not even one piece, no scallops, not even one, fake crab, and six small shrimp. I called to complain that I was charged 14.50 for six small shrimp and a pile of broccoli and was told they use the vegetables that they have. When asked about the no lobster or scallops and overcooked fake crab they literally wouldn't give me any answer. Worse than the horribly disappointing meal was their "who cares" attitude. I usually would give a place 2 trys, but will make an exception or this one and never return! read more
