Am I the only one who was really, really disappointed? Yes, the egg rolls were good but they weren't great. The rice was dry and tasted burnt and the general tao was so aggressively spiced that I couldn't eat it. I can handle spice but after 2 bites, I couldn't do it anymore. If you plan on going with children or elderly folks, be mindful that things are SPICY! I asked if they had anything that wasn't spicy and the man at the counter laughed and said 'Yes. Rice.' This anachronism has tacky stereotype decor unchanged since the 50s and now obviously shabby. It's what non-Chinese back then thought to be an authentic look. Now it's humorously retro, an artifact that can't be updated since that will destroy a key reason for continuing popularity. The menu is still the 50s cliches of egg rolls (it's widely known for them), fried rice, chow mein, spare ribs in sweet brown sauce, chicken chunks in sweet red sauce, etc. This is Chinese in the sense that Chef Boyardee is Italian. Eating at the GP, as locals call it, is to experience Chinese from the era when we were more or less clueless as to what that really meant. By all means go, because the food is okay for what it is, if pricey, but do it with a wink as a throwback experience, not as credible Chinese. read more

The egg rolls...they are a staple in my diet. Have only tried the egg rolls. Only need to eat the egg rolls. The plum sauce has a hint of ginger which is amazing. Also...the sauce is considered a liquid at the airport so, if you are flying with them anywhere...make sure they are in containers that are 100mL or less! read more

Met friends for lunch on Friday, May 26th, and this was the worst I have experienced. The atmosphere is a time warp with a phone at entrance desk ringing too loudly constantly to enjoy our visit. The portion for our dishes looked closer to half portions and the dishes were almost tasteless and mediocre. The Beef and Greens were sad pieces of beef overly smothered in bok choy - should have called it Beef and Bok Choy. Their special chow mein, a disappointment to me. Won ton soup okay. Went here recently with some friends to try out the famous Golden Palace eggrolls and I was not disappointed! While the the eggrolls were a bit pricy, it was totally worth it because they were crispy and stuffed with tons of meat. I thought that the customer service was great as well, and the employee that helped me checkout my takeout order was very kind and helpful (I think his name was Justin)! I'll definitely be coming back and recommend this place to my friends and family. read more

Worst customer service I have ever witnessed at a restaurant in Ottawa. The staff was rude beyond belief. The last time I went there, i was literally yelled at for daring to show up for a reservation a few minutes early. The building is ancient and in disrepair. The whole restaurant just seems grungy. The food itself is mediocre and overpriced and on top of it all the service is slow and the staff is unbearably rude. My coworker suggested I try golden palace and I have never been more disappointed. The food was very pricey (70 for four meals) and in very small portions, rivaling the size of an apple juice box. But what really gets me is the customer service I received. I tried to be polite and succinct as possible when I order food. Today, I was hung up on three times, laughed at and belittled. It was the most frustrating order I have ever had to make and try to remain polite. This has got to be the worst restaurant I have ever received food from. Do not go here! After hearing so much about this place, I finally got to check it out and meh, I could take it or leave it!! Extremely over priced!! I paid $40 for 4 egg rolls, veggie chow mien and general tsar's chicken!! The $12 veggie Chow Mein was all bean sprouts, had no flavour and was by far the most disappointing :( The quality of the General Tsao's chicken was better than most Chinese food places but it was $16, came in a small plastic tub and the sauce was boring and generic. Seemed more like a MyThai or a sweet chili sauce :( The egg rolls were about the only thing that were worth going but their plum sauce was unbelievably blah!! I understand why these egg rolls are award winning. One of the best things I have ever tasted. I went with the BF and his family and they hyped the place up, and it did not dissappoint. BF and I shared the general tso's chicken and pineapple chicken balls. Chicken balls were amazing- absolutely loved the sauce they came in. General tso's however...I specified that I wanted it to be MILD because i absolutely hate spicy food. The waiter must have misheard me because it was extremely spicy- doused in chili flakes. This place indeed serves amazing egg rolls, the best I've had anywhere and equal-but-different to the ones from Toronto's late great Lichee Garden. The rest is merely very good western colonial-style chinese food. The atmosphere is as authentically dated as the menu, like something out of a mid-century time warp. Check out that tin ceiling too. I asked a bunch of locals to draw a map of our neighbourhood for a student study, and every single participant identified Golden Palace on their maps; that how much of an institution this place is! Turning 53 on April 12th this year (2016), it is older than my parents, who grew up on the stuff, as did I. Now, in my dating life, it becomes a real relationship hamper if he doesn't like GP. I mean, I just randomly bring the stuff home after work! There is a reason the egg rolls are so popular: they are crispy, delicious and have more meat than most Canadian Chinese restaurants. They are also so popular, they are always being made: if you need a quick order (for takeout) or appetizer (for dine in), order the egg rolls. I am a fan of their plum sauce, which I also think is the best I have ever had. Their cuisine is Canadian Chinese (not authentic) but a huge step above your "classic" perfectly round balls in red sauce. In fact, if you want to eat well in that restaurant, stay away from any pre-planned menu: those tend to be the boring, uncreative, copycat of other restaurants meals for those with no sense of adventure or a hyper-sensitive palate. For those who actually have the occasional spice - not claim garlic is spicy- there is plenty to eat without any heat. Just stay away from the red. The decor is the same "fancy Asian" from the '60s," though repeatedly maintained. The staff all have to speak (I believe the language is) Cantonese to communicate with the kitchen, so you will get a fair number of waiter for whom English is a second language- especially for the older, original staff. That said, they have young staff who grew up in English schools, so it just depends on luck what shift you are eating there during. However, they are all kind people, proud of their business. When I hear any stories of rudeness or unkindness, I cannot help but think the diner was either unforgiving of the busy nature during certain times or were rude themselves and had it returned. As a neighbourhood resident who frequents GP regularly, I only know them to be polite (though, at times, speedily so) and, during slower times, of good humour. If you are going to dine in, go with money and plan to linger and enjoy; it's not that they can't go quick, but it will be a better meal if you see the restaurant both at its peak and calmer. The busyness will go up and down during your meal. If you are pressed for time, order takeout. Either way, you'll get delicious, comforting food. read more

Yikes, expensive!!! We ordered 6 egg rolls , 4 spring rolls, chicken fried rice (1) and chicken chow mein (1) and it came to over 50$! Egg rolls: big, plump, tasty! Spring rolls: BLAND .. Even with plum sauce. BUT I must say they were big and plump, and full, and a crispy outside. If the inside had more flavour they'd be fantastic. Plum sauce was also boring. No zip. No tang. Chow mein: was actually quite good Rice: I thought it had an almost burnt/ smokey flavour. It was okay. Servers were attentive, service was fast, friendly people, restaurant could use a little "cleaning"( grease on menus, crumbs from the last customer) Over all I just can't afford this place. 14$ per item is too much. They have medium portions - but I get just as much for 8$ at other chinese places. read more

Love the egg rolls.. they are the best. Unfortunately, the service was the worse I have ever had tonight. We tried placing an order over the phone for pickup and asked questions about the menu. We felt rushed, we were told NO you can't have extra sauce, I don't know what you want.. like why are you bothering me attitude? Needless to say, I didn't finish my order and went to the restaurant in person thinking they might be crazy busy.. which was not the case at all. I explained my frustration to the manager which didn't even apologize or care. I got my 2 dozen egg rolls for $54 and left nothing more. It was our second time here. Service is ok. Food is overpriced for what it is. What really pissed us off was the fact that we have always received fortune cookies after our meal. Today they didn't arrive and when we asked we were told we had to pay for them! At first we didn't think the guy was serious but he said he was and they were 30 cents each PLUS TAX! ---- funny we were told this when we witnessed every other table in the restaurant receive complimentary cookies. DO NOT EAT HERE. HORRIBLE SERVICE. AWFUL ATMOSPHERE. OVER PRICED. We ended up being seated in a cramped corner where we couldn't even sit across from each other because the chairs were so squished. When it came time to order the menu look very good, the prices a bit high, but we wanted to enjoy ourselves so we treated ourselves to the dinner for 2 option 2. I am allergic to pork so I asked if instead of the ribs that we could get something with chicken in it instead. The server told us rudely that it would cost 4 extra dollars. I thought that it was rather high but I was going to just deal with the cost because I wanted to have a nice evening out. When the first course came my date got wonton soup and I got the chicken noodle, the server carelessly just plunked it down and left. The soup had no flavour. It was disgusting. we did not complain at all. We just waited for the second course to come. By the time it came, being already dissatisfied I kid you not, the server simply threw the plates down, the dipping sauce actually spilt on the table. When my boyfriend bit into it we both realized that it was pork. My egg roll untouched, we called over another server to explain the situation, The fact that I had told our initial server that I was allergic to pork, and If we could get a vegetarian choice instead. The told us straight out that all they had was pork and that I could not get a replacement. i had to pay for it. At this point we realized that we were not going to pay the full price for this awful meal and service, it was not worth it. So my boyfriend walked up to our server and told him that we were done, and that we would pay for the meal that we had already received, but that we would not continue to dine. we heard them and saw them talking about us and pointing at our table. may i just say that up to this point i had been nothing but nice towards them. He along with another server told him that our food was already cooked and that we would have to pay for the full amount, even though we hadn't even received the meal past the egg rolls. It took another 5 minutes for my boyfriend to essentially barter to get the price down to 15 dollars for what we had eaten. Believe me I was so angry at this point that my boyfriend was far more generous then I would have been. We paid the 15 dollars for the meal (you must remember that we had only eaten one bowl of soup each and 1 egg roll because I couldn't even eat mine.) I have lived in Ottawa for 13 years, and never have I walked out on an establishment. I have never felt so entirely disrespected, and swindled, 15+ dollars was unacceptable. I've been going to the GP since they opened. I always take out of towners there to experience the excellence. Haven't been disappointed until last weekend. Had visitors from the US south. I raved about the food but it failed me that night. The BBQ pork was extremely over cooked, and the server and the manager said pork is always cooked that way. no concern for customer service anymore. it's sad. i guess they think they're "famous" in Ottawa so they can afford to treat some customers like utter crap. clearly they don't value every customer when they are really busy or an individual staff member is feeling overwhelmed. it should never be okay for staff to treat customers with anything but decorum and respect. unfortunately, we will never be going back after the way we were treated this time. and, to be clear, this was their second chance in our mind. the last time we were there they were way over-crowded, condescending to the point of rudeness, took way too long to deliver our orders and the food (yes, even the eggrolls) were just awful. come to think of it, we even went in once on our way by just to get an eggroll each and the person behind the counter laughed at us for only buying two. "only two? ha!" I think their food quality has slowly been declining over the past little while. Even the eggrolls at Scotiabank Place have been off. It seems to be very hit-or-miss among our friends who have been patrons. We might be willing to deal with the poor service if the food was what it was once. Horribly disappointed tonight. We have been going here since we moved to Ottawa 16 years ago, and it has always been great. But tonight? Not good at all. Our order was messed up, even though I had marked the items right on the takeout menu. They substituted curry for black bean, and missed one item entirely. $110 for a dozen egg rolls and 5 dishes is way too much for the food we received.
