My usual Chinese spot is closed on Mondays, so I figured I would try this place after getting a menu. Had the shrimp lo mein with a side of soy in a container. Well, I don't know if it was the shrimp or the sauce, but within half hour of finishing I got violently sick. I have never had such a quick and virulent reaction to Chinese food, or any other meal, in my life. My daughter had just the noodles and thankfully was ok. Finally tracking down Chinese food during quarantine was a surprisingly hard task, so I was super glad to find this was open. They only deliver within 2 miles and I am about 2.5 miles, but I was fine going for pick to meet my cravings. This is located on Bloomfield Ave, which is usually hard to find parking on, but in this situation parking was plentiful. There was only one customer allowed in the store near the door. I got the wonton soup which was nice and hearty, the scallions were a nice touch. I got chicken wings, which had much more breading than I typically see in Chinese takeout wings. It was a lot of meat too, probably more than I should have had in one serving. They only included 1 fortune cookie and 1 soup spoon even though we clearly ordered food/large soup for 2 people. I'm between a 3 and 4 for food, but I'm glad to have a place that's open at this time, so I will round up to a 4. They price is good, and this is a pretty solid/typical Chinese takeout spot and I'm glad to have found one. read more

Had an interesting experience ordering here for the first time. Told the lady my order and I asked for light oil on the shrimp and broccoli but she didn't respond. So before the call ended, I asked "did you hear what I mentioned about the light oil" she rudely goes "I heard you, I know you. I know what you always order"....well thing is I was a first time customer so hardly likely that she knew me. The food itself was sub par. These reviews are hilarious and false. I know everyone's experience may differ but I always see a trend of people leaving unfair and nasty reviews of Chinese takeouts. People act like they are ordering take out from PF Changs or even TAO lol. The food is cheap but it's still delicious. Every place will cook things differently, it is what it is. People are so ridiculous people complaining about long delivery are the dumb ones who order through uber eats or some other dumb app. Also, people think that they are the only customer ordering lol. We order from here weekly and we rarely have problems and if we do they correct it right away. They care about their customers. The Golden River Restaurant offers traditional Chinese cuisine at reasonable prices. The most expensive lunch special is $850., and includes entree, rice, and choice of soda, soup, or egg roll. I love the shrimp with lobster sauce and the sauteed mixed vegetables. My significant other enjoys the pork lomain and the roast pork egg foo young. And we have never paid more than ten dollars for any item on the regular menu. As a soup lover, I recommend wonton, chicken rice, and vegetable. The owner is a sensational cook. The cashier who takes the orders is a kind friendly young woman. The mark of any good restaurant is good food, decent prices, and friendly service. Golden River has all three. read more

It's not authentic Chinese food, the flavors of different dishes all sort of taste the same... but my boyfriend and I order from this place about once a week anyway. We always get the combo plate, that includes an entree, your choice of rice, and a gigantic eggroll. I smother everything with sriracha sauce, and my craving for Chinese food does get filled. Obviously if I wanted authentic Chinese food I'd go to Chinatown in NYC (or home in LA, waah), but for the area of Montclair, this is one of the better takeout places. read more

Then Golden River came on my radar. I've ordered the Sesame Chicken dish about 10 times now in 2 months. It's what takeout should be. Cheap, tasty, and fast. By the 2-3rd time going they knew me and knew I was the sesame chicken guy. Genuine people there. If you are a snobby high class person don't eat here, but if you appreciate good takeout that's authentic and affordable this is your place. Golden River. The name just reminds me of pee, which alone should raise a red flag and tell me to never eat here unless if my life depended upon it. Even then, if I eat here one more time, I may in fact end up dead on the streets of Montclair because my body went into shock from salt overload. ANYWAY, the best part about this place is that they are fast and they are located very close to where I work. All of the food... sort of tastes the same. It's really bizarre. Americanized Chinese food is, in general, not my favorite... but I can dig on it every now and then. It's fairly obvious that the food quality is totally sub-par, and the employees quite frankly KNOW but just don't care. They are bringing in plenty of business, they are located right next to one of the busiest intersections on Bloomfield Avenue, so why the hell should they change their shitty menu, at all? Pork fried rice is always dry as hell - as are the egg rolls and spring rolls. I've been coming to Golden River for years because it simply has the best old school Chinese in town. Fast and pleasant service from the terrific local couple that has run it for years. Good for both pick-up and delivery. The standards are always great here, i.e., egg rolls, sesame noodles, shrimp with broccoli, chow fun noodles, fried rice etc. If you are looking for above average, standard Chinese in Montclair, this is the place. read more

A bad attitude is worse than a bad recipe. I have been ordering delivery from them for quite a while. Fast, hot and good. I walked in yesterday and the lady had a grumpy attitude. I ordered wings. Then as she was putting in the wings I added on fries. She went about cooking ribs and pork. I asked her did she hear me order fries. She said yes, she will put it in 10 minuts. The person who answers the phone is the most rude person I ever spoke to. I called to order lunch and couldn't understand what she said after I asked her a question. She got mad when I couldn't understand her and she said "were not going" and hung up the phone? Their food isn't even good so I don't know where they come off being rude to customers. Not the best Chinese restaurant but not bad for quick take out. My favorite thing about it...they actually take the coupons printed in their menu. I hate the places that print coupons, and then when you ask for the free item they yell "No, only can soda." Jerks. Don't put coupons in your menu if you aren't gonna take them. They reel me in with offers of free egg rolls then just yell at me in broken english. But anyways...the scallion pancakes were a bit rubbery and greasy but I liked them. The pork lo mein was good as was the orange chicken. Actual chunks of chicken, not just balls of doughy stuff or fat. The hot and sour soup could use some pork in it but the rice is pretty good and when you ask for something extra spicy they do put in extra peppers.
