We haven't been to this place in about 30 years. There has been a huge change. The service was very nice but the chicken wasn't. Hey, I'm sorry but, the chicken was cooked in old grease and sat in it way too long. The potato wedges were halfway cooked. A couple with hard solid potatoes but, the Hawaiian rolls were good. I have been a long term customer of The Golden Skillet for over 20 years. I always go to get the chicken liver box. I bought one today 12/26/24. Decided to taste it on the way home. What a disappointment. I called told the person that the livers were hard and bitter. (They can't have the bile packet left on.) I went back, told her I wanted another box, cooked soft. Checked the top but should have looked all the way through. Those on the bottom could have come from my old order. Not a good experience at all. Stumbled on this place, while spending time with family in the Upper Marlboro area during the Christmas holidays. The whole family had a craving for fried chicken and the kids of course, pizza! And, to top things off my "Auntie" in town visiting from Louisiana wanted fried chicken livers and gizzards!....I was like wth!?....Where are we gonna find that at!!? lol In steps, the Golden Skillet Fried Chicken. This place might not sell pizza but they delivered on the "Fried Chicken!" I never heard of this place previously, but I was made a fan during this visit. The Golden Skillet Fried Chicken was apparently a popular fast food restaurant chain in the South but had now dwindle down to just a few remaining locations around the NC/VA/MD areas. This Forestville, MD location is one of those remaining dinosaurs. It's not much to look at from the outside. It actually looks dated and closed....until you see the drive-thru line of cars wrapped around the building. Hint #1....This is clearly a sign that something must be tasty or good up in there. Upon entering, the vibe and decor was old school and somewhat sketchy, but the staff friendliness eased any doubt. We ordered a 12 piece "mixed" meal with sides of fries, potato salad and coleslaw to go. I will be upfront and the first to say, I doubted this place and wanted to go elsewhere....but was proven wrong. This place is legit! The chicken checked off all the right boxes....fresh, seasoned, piping hot and actually damn good!! It was really hard to not dig in the box and starting eating right at the traffic light while driving back to the Fam with the goods. The chicken was so crispy, golden fried and juicy....as if it was made to order. The sides were really good too, as well as the fresh biscuits. For my Aunt who had the special request for chicken livers and gizzards, she gave it a double thumbs up!! Now, Listen....Hint #2: Anytime you can get a 70 year-old family matriarch who has fried many of birds in her day to give props on the food....then you know its GOOD!!! Fried livers and gizzards is not my thing but I was just curious. So, I even tried it and was surprised that it was really good. Of course, I had to douce it in some hot sauce...mandatory. lol In all, I was impressed. The food was delicious and the service was fast and friendly. This little gem of a find gets props and rivals the nearby Royal Farms, Popeyes and KFC....inmho. The menu is expansive between mainly fried chicken, fish and sandwiches. BUT, the "STAR" here is clearly the fried chicken and now I see why the lines at the drive-thru were so long! Will definitely keep this spot "bookmarked" for the next time I'm in the area or craving some good fried chicken. *PRO TIP: Make sure you ask for a side of "Mambo Sauce!"...Thank me later. I've seen this place so many times, but it was dated and appeared to be a place I didn't feel compelled to stop and go in and visit. Well @mrchimetime was doing a DMV food tour and said the place was legit and had the best mumbo sauce. It was only right that I finally stop in and find out for myself! I pulled up and don't ya know ....this place has a drive thru!! Hallelujah! I had to get the chicken sandwich and wings. I'll be more adventurous and try the gizzards another time. The chicken sandwich was good with the mumbo sauce, enough crisp and soft sesame seed bun; no tomato, only lettuce and pickles. Fries on the side were thick cut fries, crisp on the outside, soft on the inside. The party size wings are great; no complaints. I forgot that I got the old bay wings, they just had a tasty heavy dusting of something on them. I'll have to try the full size wings another time. I had two sides that were very small-- the plastic containers fit in the side portions of the to go plate. Collards are ok as a green (better than any other drive-thru!), the mac n cheese you can pass on. Now, people debate mumbo sauce all the time. There are so many variations, mumbo sauces are NOT created equal. I forgot what's real. I simply stick beside Capital City mumbo. Trying the sauce from here, I'm familiar and it's the real thing! If you blink you can miss it and it's been around for a while. If you want quick fried chicken, and you don't have much time or money this is the place. Every time that I'm in the area I'm tempted. Before the pandemic they had mostly a drive through business. This business model I think has helped them to stay alive and functioning during the pandemic. The chicken is good, well seasoned and fresh. They also are very generous with the count of wings, it seems that I always have more than I order. They beat the competition in price, you get a whole wing not those small wingettes. They also have their own chicken breast sandwich that is also very good. Golden Skillet has been a hole in the wall staple in PG County for over 20 years. The chicken used to taste very diffrent that the big name fast food chicken. Unmatched! I was leaving the area and looked up and saw this place. I had just saw someone do a review of how great it was. I ordered the 2pc dark with greens and a side of whiting. The 2pc was $5.99 and the fish was $3.59. For those prices alone they get 5 stars!!! Lol But as far as quality and taste that's a different story. The chicken wasn't bad, again for 5.99, not bad and it was seasoned. The greens were meh, glory greens taste better than those. The fish was SOAKED in grease. The drive thru line is like a line in Kings Dominion dead of summer - long and wrapped around the lot. We went on a not so busy Wednesday night. Passed it up a few times and glad we took a chance on it today. Such good fried chicken and nostalgic potato wedges. Chicken was freshly made to order, extremely hot, crispy yet juicy and residue of real grease like in your abuelas cast iron skillet. Fear of disappointment - don't be!! The order was made with care. Only complaint is the mamba sauce was vinegary and unexpected. Outside of the one dip I would definitely visit again! Next time we will try other pieces of the chicken not just the wings. read more

Fried Chicken was on point but as far as the sides go, didn't make sense at all. brought a chicken dinner with 2 sides. I wasn't offered any sauce for my chicken. the container used for the sides I would say about 1/4 cup or smaller in size. If I could give this place zero stars I would! Ate here in the past was very good. Tonight we ate there got a 5 piece dark meal with greens and potato wedges. It was absolutely horrible! First of all the chicken was so greasy hard and tasted old. The greens came from a can and were tasteless and don't get me started on the potato wedges that were as small and over cooked. To top it off they showed no love with the portion of the sides. This meal was a waste of money. If you want to have heart burn and indigestion like I did all night eat here. So I haven't been on this side of town since I moved away a few years ago so when I remembered that Golden Skillet was still open I was like "bet! Let me stop in here and grab some livers real quick!".... WRONG MOVE!!! The livers: they're fried livers... literally just battered and fried livers. No flavor, no seasoning no nothing. If you don't like the purest taste of liver, don't get these because that's all you'll be getting here. Not over or under fried. Fried perfectly but just simply fried livers. I also got a six piece party wing: decent. Fried well and decent flavor but..... after I ate one I look at the one under it and it had the most feathers I'd ever seen on a fried wing. I've gotten wings from many carry outs so a feather here or there is no surprise but this was flagrant. Like they must literally buy, batter, drop and serve. They couldn't even have looked at that wing. So although I wanna give them 5 stars bc I remember them being good back in the day, I can only do 1 and that's only bc they had good customer service. The chicken sandwich comes with a good sized piece of fried chicken breast that overhangs the sesame seed bun that it's in between, and comes with lettuce, and mayo.
