Welp, when you're in a small town such as Plymouth, you have to take what you can get food wise. Way back in the day, I used to come here with my family but the quality since then has gone down extremely. I got the 2 chicken, bbq plate with baked beans and macaroni salad which both came straight from a can and the macaroni salad was definitely from the local grocery store . I believe only the chicken and fish are made from this place , everything else is not homemade. The service in Plymouth is always not the greatest, they act as if they are so annoyed with everyone for it to be a small town place, we ordered through the drive through so didn't sit down but I'm sure I would have been annoyed getting any service from them. Recently we visited Plymouth and ate twice in Golden Skillet. The food was excellent as always. The service on the other hand, particularly on the first day, which was Friday, October 24th, 2025, was riddled with rude cashiers and the staff was clearly overwhelmed. This is a comfy, down home, family style restaurant. You walk up and order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. The staff was very friendly, efficient and helpful and the food was delicious. My sister's chicken had a light crispy coating and my barbecue sandwich was great, especially with the addition of coleslaw on it, suggested by our server. There are not too many options for food in Plymouth, luckily the Golden skillet is a pretty great spot. Food is good, especially for the money. Service is very fast too. Was looking for fried chicken and this spot came up. It was right down the road from my hotel so that worked too. Everything was hot and fresh tasting. I got the bbq and 2 piece chicken plate. The chicken was crispy and delicious, the chopped bbq was good but could've used more pepper sauce, kind of dry. I don't think the Mac and cheese was baked but it was still good. Good food! Service is normally quick. A couple of times our ticket got lost and we were left sitting for 15 minutes till we went back to counter and had to give them our ticket to order again. Our other family members were done eating by the time we got our food. Tables are not always cleaned off in a timely manner but I usually carry wet ones and wipe the table myself...thanks to Covid era, I go prepared. read more

First time visitor and it isn't the finest place to eat depending on what your looking for. However it's the closest to home cooked in this area as you will find. All else is fast foods around here. I tried the pork chop special with yams and strong beans. Was not expecting much at the$7.99 price. But much to my surprise it was nice size and tasty. The yams and green beans had great flavor. The pork chops was thin and good. To be so thin, they were very good. This place I passed by several times when I'm in the area and kept passing it. But now i know. It's good to stop. Southern food at its finest. Biscuits flakey and delicious, hush puppies sweet and rich, potato salad amazing! My bf had fried chicken and it was amazing! The service is amazing-real southern charm. Unlike most fast food spots-all the food is made to order fresh and hot! Even the biscuits! You would never know it but this place is the bomb. Clearly this was NOT originally a Golden Skillet. VERY fancy inside! HUGE menu at very fair prices. Place was doing a heck of a business on a Tuesday at 1:30pm. The fried chicken was very good, as was the mac & cheese and mashed. I love finding these joints, esp at such an affordable price. This seemed like a "meeting spot" for many in the area. I had to be parked & someone brought my food out but the fries were missing from both orders so I kindly let the person know that I didn't get my fries. She then responded "see this knee? The locals live this place!! Every time i visit there is a line at the register. I went yesterday and the food was ok but everything was fried. I didnt see and was not told about any other option. So if u are trying to eat healthy then stay away! The okra was even fried. The portions are good for the price and the staff seem to work very had. I have one issue, however. The cashier who too our order obviously had a cold. She kept playing with her nose while she was talking to us and pulling it up. Her nose was red and inflamed. She was touching the phone answering phone orders. Seemed that she was the only one allowed to answer the phone even though there were two other cashiers. The situation was just very unsanitary with no Purell in sight. The shrimp, fried chicken, gizzards, and fish all taste the same and is way too greasy!!! The last few times I got shrimp or gizzards they were very salty and I had to throw it away. The green beans have zero flavor. The mashed potatoes and gravy used to be good for instant potatoes but again, the last few times we get them they are very lumpy. We got food poisoning from eating the Big Skillet. This place has gone down, since the owner got cancer. I am so sad, but this will not stand. Get your lawyers ready for a lawsuit. I've thrown away over $100.00 in food from the GS, because of mistakes made while they were in a hurry. Serving infected chicken is no way to have a future business. I am writing this review in hopes that others won't get sick, or if they do GS will do something besides the nothing they always do when something isn't right. To the owner, Geraldine Davenport, please know in your heart that I don't maliciously go after people that make mistakes, however, my past complaints have been disregarded, and no money ever refunded. This time the complaint will be universal, and everybody will know that we got food poisoning from the Big Skillet sandwich at the Golden Skillet in Plymouth, NC. Don't eat there. Your life may very well depend on it. We've been sick with nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea, since Sunday, 01/07/2018. This is a glorified fast food restaurant. You order at the counter and they bring your food to you on plastic plates with plastic silverware. Or you get a smallish paper plate if you want the skimpy salad bar. I had the salad bar, my husband had fried oysters with two sides. The oysters were not good; he used the words less than mediocre.
