This company was recommended by some friends that had their trees trimmed in Monrovia. I called Alonso and he came out for an estimate. He looked over the tree and gave me an estimate. Our pine tree was dying and he explained that the outer bark was peeling and the tree wasn't coming back. After much back and forth with our local city councilman, it was determined that I was issued a permit to get the tree removed myself. (FYI: if you live in the city of LA, the department of Urban Forestry will only trim your trees every NINE (9) years.) Alonso and crew arrived on time and initially a crew of four men took down our pine in less than one hour. As they cut down branches, two of the guys fed the branches into a chipper and cleaned the area around, even in the streets. I decided to also have the stumped grinded down. It costs a little more but worth it because I didn't want to attract termites or other invasive creatures later on. This took longer than the actual tree removal but the crew was professional and clean. I was shopping around for quotes from other tree removal services but this company actually showed me their license and insurance. We've used this company twice to come trim trees for us and they are great. They are able to come out quickly and do an excellent job, leaving our property clean. Most recently, we had them come remove a weed-like tree that had grown through the fence between our house and the next one. In spite of the tight spot and the wild unruly branches, they removed the entire crown clear of the fence, and made strategic cuts to the stump at its base on our side of the line to hopefully keep it from coming back. Regardless, they did excellent work in a difficult spot (better than I hoped for), for what I think is a reasonable price. Definitely will call again, and would recommend. read more

It was what the tomato plants were telling me that finally pushed me over the edge and got me shopping around for someone to trim my Chinese Elm. "Sean, we no get no light... we so very weary and weak... we - must - have - sun!" That was it. They were trying, but struggling in my shaded garden just to survive, and I had to do something, if I wanted to sleep at night, that is. I shopped around for someone to trim the aforementioned tree and got quite a range of prices, but finally, when I met with someone, it was suggested that the tree might be very sick and that it might be worth while to check that out before spending the money on trimming it. After some high quotes and scheduling issues, I found Golden State and called Alonso. We agreed on what I believe to be a very fair rate to trim the tree back, but upon his inspection, he had the same concerns about the health of the tree and also gave me a quote for complete removal. Let say that the price for removal, down to the stump and well into the ground, was the same as others had quoted for trimming. Alonso and his team did an incredible job and at a great price. He was very accommodating and got the job done very quickly. A few issues that we had were quickly and easily resolved. I've only seen one bad review on here, and it was all about scheduling. I had stumps removed by Golden State Tree. Pricing: Alonso stopped-by, looked at my citrus tree stump, box bush stumps, and honey suckle stumps and gave me a quote that was several hundred lower than another quote I got, so I booked him immediately. He also had his crew remove yard debris (leftover honeysuckle branches) without any charge, saving me a few hours of work--awesome! Alonso made the job seem effortless and easy. I will say that there was a pee problem with one of the workers. When nature calls, do it on something else other than on the house. -Update: 7 months later, the check was finally cashed at a liquor store. We had tree roots growing up onto our grass and almost to the concrete area of our patio from an 30 year old Eucalyptus tree behind our property. We had never noticed the tree roots until recently because of our grass, but this time we did notice it because our dogs had destroyed the grass on that side of yard from excess water, etc. and running all over it. We had heard about horror stories with tree roots damaging pipes and foundation, etc. so we wanted to take care of the problem as soon as possible. In addition, we had a 25 year old palm tree that we had planted in a planter in our backyard that got to be 20 feet tall that started cracking the planter, and probably would've done even more damage to our brick planters had it grown even bigger, so we needed to have it removed as well. First off, I know nothing about eradicating trees or the cost of eradicating them. So, I decided to do research on how the process is done and what the average cost to remove them is. After doing my research I needed to find a reputable tree service company to do the job. I looked on Yelp, like I always do, so that I could see what other Yelpers' experiences were. I noticed that Golden State Tree Service had 4.5 stars with 19 reviews and read through all the reviews. I called Golden State Tree Services, and left a message. I was called back within 10 minutes. I spoke with Alonso, and he was able give me an appointment for a bid on the same day. Alonso arrived on time and was very professional. He gave me a very competitive quote. On the day the work was completed, the workers showed up on time and completed the job in a timely matter, and left it clean as well. I was very appreciative that they didn't leave a mess. I think anyone can agree that it gets a little frustrating when timeframes and appointments are not honored. Being on-time and doing what you said you are going to do is a mark of being professional. I was referred to Alonso by my neighbor just one house down the street. My neighbor was my high school classmate (many years ago now) and so I've known her a long time, plus we live literally on the same street so I trusted her referral. The first time we scheduled an estimate, it was for between 10-11 AM on a Friday. I would've preferred just a set time, but I was ok with the timeframe since our schedule was more flexible that day. Alonso did not come until after 12 PM. He didn't apologize for being late either. I was not pleased, my husband's better at being the nice smiley one no matter what. I warmed up after a bit because he was professional and seemed to have solid knowledge of what needed to be done. It seemed they were going to do a more thorough job than our previous brush service so we agreed. We scheduled the work to be done for the following Thursday and I confirmed with Alonso the night before that his team was due to arrive between 12 and 1 PM. Another timeframe which I dislike, but again I felt like being a bit more understanding so I made sure to be home around that time. I was pretty angry by the time it was 4 PM and his team finally came. Also, we were not offered an acknowledgement of the late arrival or even a discount of any sort for the treatment of my time. It was very hot so I understand that the team could not finish their work that day, especially because they had arrived later than expected. I messaged Alonso and he mentioned they'd come on Friday to finish up. No one came on Friday, and I messaged to follow up. He mentioned that he'd aim for Monday afternoon, but Tuesday if Monday didn't work out. He mentioned he'd let me know in the next hour. This was Monday midday. Didn't hear from him until I followed up 3 hours later, and as I expected, it ended up being Tuesday in the morning. I understood that, and preferred it on behalf of the workers since if they came earlier they could beat the heat. I give two additional stars for the work the team did because it was solid and they really did a nice job cleaning up the brush and cleaning up the area after the work was done. I don't fault them at all because they did their work well and he's obviously got a good, hardworking group of guys, but otherwise this is a one star review simply due to the frustration of scheduling! It was exhausting and after a while, I just came to expect the worst. I don't think anyone wants to feel this way when they enlist a service. You hope that people will stick to their word. I don't mind if someone schedules a date of service more further out, you pick whatever date works best for your business and just please let me know. I just want them to be there at the time and date that was promised. read more

It was a lot out of pocket when I wasn't anticipating it. I found them on Yelp and made the call. Alonso went to look at the trees the next day and called me with a bid. It was as high as any other place I called but he knocked off a little, was ready to go, sent me a copy of their insurance, and promised to clean everything up. Which they did. They took out a tall pine and pruned two other trees in about three hours. They were mindful and clearly skilled. For that, the quick service, and the great communication Alonso gives, they get five stars. I have had several trees cut down over the last five years at my Los Angeles property, this group was more expensive than my LA crew who do just as good of work. They cut down, removed, and trimmed exactly as promised and cleaned the whole yard in a few short, albeit noisy, hours! He gave me a very reasonable quote (similar to other companies), BUT his customer service, professionalism, and friendly demeanor sealed the deal for me! His team came on the day we agreed. They did a great job at taking down 2 trees, thinning out my citrus tree, removing an old stump and pruning another tree that needed it when I wasn't home. They left the banana trees undone because their specialty knife/machete broke. He informed me immediately and promised to return the following week. He did and the job was amazing. I feel like I have a new backyard and the trees that were on the property line preventing my neighbor from erecting his fence, are gone! (Happy neighbors now!) The ONLY reason I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 5 is that when grinding down the stump, they nicked my sprinkler line. I informed Alonso and they didn't get defensive or question it. He said, "I'll go out there tomorrow to fix it." AND they did and my sprinkers are in perfect working order. They even cleaned out a sprinkler head that was clogged with dirt. As a single woman and home owner, they never made me feel uncomforable...even when the situation could have gotten sticky with the damage. I was relieved to have have to "confront" him about it. But just because I had to deal with it, I'm knocking off the one star. He tells me, they always have extra pipe available because roots have been known to grown in them and they will swap out pieces as part of the job. I mean, c'mon. Doesn't get any better than that!
