As an afternoon tea lover, I was very disappointed by the actual tea and food, but enjoyed the interiors. Tea: They use Tealeaves tea, which is a great quality tea and typical of hotels like the Ritz and Waldorf. The tea choices were super limited (maybe 8 total?) and didn't have good options for people who enjoy tea for tea's sake. The menu contained a lot of flavored, fruity teas, like apple pie, vanilla something, etc. I was surprised they didn't have a Jasmine green or another solid Asian green. Food: The sandwiches were generally under-seasoned and we also weren't very impressed by the pastries. I did like how they did a fall theme, but everything fell flat for us, except for the scones, which were great. Ambiance and decor were great with muted pink, green, and yellow tones that carried through the china. I thought it was good switch up from your typical Wedgwood or Royal Albert floral china and British settings. The girls doing the service were also excellent at their jobs and didn't miss a beat. So the vibes were great, just not the tea or food. $87/person before tax and tip (after is around $116) is also New York-level pricing without the extensive NY tea menu or food quality. They did seem to take reservations but don't have a ton of tables or space so it's definitely a more intimate but quality space. I have been to The Proper many times and was not aware until recently that Goldie's even existed. The space is so quaint and pretty and I am so glad that we dressed up for our experience because there really is no other way to do it properly. Apparently, the concept for High Tea was developed and inspired by the sons of the Hotel Designer - they wanted to do something special and surprise their mom with a relaxing tea experience on Mother's day. It's a little small so definitely recommend making a res, but incidentally the day we came, we didn't have one (turns out Open Table won't let you make two bar reservations within an hour or so of each other so it literally wouldn't let me make a res!). But I came around 6p on a Saturday and they were able to give me a table until 7:30ish when the next res would arrive. There were two waiters, a bartender, and the hostess, so overall a small group but again the place is small! It's a low light, date night type vibe for sure! The cocktails are a bit pricey, most are $20-23 if they have alcohol or $10-14 for mocktails. I got the lady bird mocktail because I love floral flavors and it has lavender. It had more of a tangy flavor than it does a floral flavor but I still enjoyed it and loved that it was pink with a flower in it. Overall - if someone invited me here i would def come again! But given how pricey the cocktails are and they don't have a happy hour, I'd just trying to have a few drinks I would probably pick somewhere else. But def give it a try! Other note: when entering the Austin proper hotel, you take a right, pass the check in desk, and the bar entrance is right there. The bathrooms for the bar are the same that are used for Peacock restaurant which is also inside Austin proper. Parking is a bit difficult; they have a paid valet, but otherwise it's street parking and the hotel is right on a busy part of 3rd st so you may end up having to walk a bit. I went back in February and while my friends and I were staying at the prope, they were able to squeeze us in for a reservation right before our dinner plans because we were staying at the hotel. Loved the ambiance at Goldie's but will not be back for afternoon tea we had a great time and paid a flat fee for our two tiered treats - which was a combination of baked sweets and finger sandwiches! All of which are delicious but quite petit! So we ended up getting burgers and cocktails in the lounge after our afternoon tea service. Service was friendly, albeit a little confused when we were there, maybe because we were a big table and it was busy that Sunday but we made it work and we had a great time! My review is for the Cocktail Bar and specifically the service provided by Hernan - the energetic Peruvian bartender. Goldie's is reserved for guests or residents of the Austin Proper hotel. My wife and I stopped by for a pre-dinner cocktail and enjoyed it enough to stop by again later for a post dinner cocktail and spirit pour. We stuck to classics for the pre dinner drink - My wife had the Bijou, and I had the Vieux Carre. Both drinks very well balance and enjoyable. The complimentary truffle potato chips were addicting as was Hernan's service. After dinner we returned and sat at the bar this time. I opted for the Ave Mescal and my wife enjoyed the Champs Elysees (another cocktail with Green Chartreuse). Again, both drinks were excellent. We ended the night with some neat pours from their extensive liquor inventory. I had a pour of EH Taylor Small batch bourbon, and my wife enjoyed a couple of 1 oz pours of two similar tequilas. Hernan helped us pick out which two to compare. The free snacks we tried after dinner were the cheese crackers, just as addictive as the truffle potato chips. Overpriced for the afternoon tea experience. I mainly wanted to leave a review to warn off people who may not be able to sit in very low seating, or backless little ottoman "seats". The hotel is beautiful and decorated in so much opulence and style, I'm a bit shocked that the decorators created a bar/ tea venue with such awful non-functional seating and tiny tables. For $110 a person, that's the base afternoon tea price plus tax, tip and service fee, all pre-paid before you arrive, this tea service was underwhelming. As you'll see in the photos, the tea tray is beautiful and some items were quite tasty, but I was really let down by the tiniest scone I've ever seen at afternoon tea! Normally the scone is one of the main attractions and I look forward to a nice one. Another flaw in service was how long we waited to get our first pots of tea. I'm really at afternoon tea for TEA. and scones : ) The tea was nice, and the selection was interesting, but this is tea you can pick up at World Market or Barnes and Noble and brew at home. They leave off all labeling, but I recognized the flavors as Harney teas. I just feel like a fancy, expensive tea service should try a little harder to bring in a luxury tea. We waited 45 minutes at our small table and really low chairs (this is after we asked to be moved from sitting on hassocks that were really uncomfortable)...tea was good, but most likely Harney brand. Food was small (scones were the size of a postage stamp), and I wouldn't complain, but for a tea more than double the price ($110 per person) of another local tea--and forced tip and food service fees; we won't be coming back. I always think food/bar places attached or inside hotels rob you blind sometimes with the marked up prices so be aware when patronizing this establishment. Anyhow, I like the variations of cocktails they had on the menu at this place including a Ramos Gin Fizz which is hard to find on a menu due to the labor in making this drink. Go google the history of this cocktail and you will know what I'm talking about. Be prepared to wait a little longer for your fizzy drink if you order this as your bartender will be shaking this in a cocktail shaker until his arm falls off to get that egg white foam going! Just make sure he doesn't turn it into mirengue pie! Although the drink tasted great, I was hoping for a taller foam/fizz on the top of the drink liked the ones I've had in the past at other places that make this drink. I guess the bartender was a little impatient with pouring in that club soda. This drink could take a good 10-12 minutes to make. The attention to detail on the garnishes for these craft cocktails are on point because one person in my party ordered the Goldie's martini and they used pinky shears to cut the orange peel for this drink. I guess at $20-$23 a drink, I would expect them to work on your drinks with precision and spend some time on it. read more

However, at $60 per person, they serve the most laughably tiny afternoon tea I've ever encountered. I think even a toddler would go hungry with "scones" and almond cookies as small as my thumb! If these bites were the most transcendent flavor bombs on the planet, it might be slightly more forgivable, but this was pretty standard afternoon tea fare. The chocolate cake was admittedly delicious, as was the smoked salmon sandwich, but otherwise, the culinary aspect of this experience really does not justify the price tag. (Also very puzzling that the most generous serving on the platter was... radishes? to be eaten with butter?) Overall, if you want to catch up with your girlfriends for a few hours and you aren't hungry *at all* Goldie's is a cute pick, but otherwise, you're better off assembling your own selection of adult-size pastries at any bakery/patisserie.
