I ordered a passionfruit drink that ended up being pretty simple flavor-wise and at a little over $10 with tip for a small glass, it felt a bit steep for what it was. Butterfly Bar is a small bar next to Patrizi's offering some decent drinks, but at a bit of a steeper price. It's clean and has a bit of a cozy vibe to it and the bartenders are very friendly. We ordered a paper plane and a run punch. They didn't have fruit punch for the rum punch, so they Frankenstein'd a drink together for us. The paper plane was pretty good, but the rum punch was a bit of a miss, especially considering they didn't have the stuff to make it. Altogether, the experience wasn't bad but for Austin it felt pricey and with 1/2 drinks being a miss we probably wouldn't stop by again. read more

I've been going to Butterfly Bar since 2013 and have always loved it. The atmosphere is unique, the cats are a fun touch, and Patrizis' food is consistently amazing. It's been one of my favorite Austin spots for years. Unfortunately, in the past couple of years, one of the female bartenders has made my visits really unpleasant. She often skips over me when I'm waiting to order, serves others first, and has even been aggressive when I've asked for a drink or when it's close to closing time. It's uncomfortable, and tonight a friend who came with me noticed it without me even saying anything. It's really disappointing, because I want to keep supporting a place I've loved for so long, but her behavior makes me feel unwelcome. I truly hope management encourages all staff to be equally kind and respectful, because Butterfly Bar has so much going for it otherwise. read more

This place is such a great find. A bit strange on parking but it's also part of the vortex. You order food from the food truck with lots of yummy selections and go inside to the bar to order drinks. Friendly staff who were helpful and pleasant. Lots of outdoor seating and the bar inside also has limited seating. We had a big group and sat at a large table. The chandelier was ridiculously low so it was like one of those large table settings. You have to talk around to anyone on the opposite side of the table. Lol Lots of salads, pasta noodles, and various types of breads. All the plates and utensils are disposable. Plenty of water sources and cups to keep hydrated and the drink mean you as well thought out. Cocktails to cocktails. We went on Wednesday, which is half off of all the wine. Such a bargain! I should've gotten a bottle instead of a glass to share amongst us. It's such a bargain! The Bourdeaux is what I had and we also had the Pinot Grigio as well as some tasty martinis. It has a casual atmosphere and just enough eclectic vibe to keep coming back. Next time I'll take more pics of the food and more of the space. Despite it not being on the menu, they could make me one and it was amazing. I've had bad experiences with the ratio of aperol to prosecco at other restaurants, but this one did it so well. I've always loved butterfly bar and never thought to make a review before, but recently I attended a large event there and have to say they did a great job! The bartenders are friendly and efficient, and the food from Patrizi's was available in the small enclosed space out in the patio, and it was just a beautiful and delightful time. Also, their mezcal and carrot juice cocktail is genius and delicious! I always come back but I would definitely consider having an event here after this experience. read more

My husband and I stopped in for a drink. I ordered a margarita and he ordered an old fashioned. Note to get your old fashion with maker's they will up charge you $3 changing it from a $10 drink to a $13 dollar drink. The drinks were just okay here. We stood out on the patio with them and kept getting hit by weird insects and bugs. Not sure what was up last night with that. After awhile of getting annoyed by this we did go inside. Slightly packed, so we didn't get a seat to enjoy, but we stood in the back and listened without too much troubles hearing. Came here for the first time about a month ago. It's definitely an "East Austin" vibe, like a crazy backyard with statues and lights and mismatched patio tables. I like that they do have a hostess at the front gate to seat you, so you don't have to do that awkward wandering around the yard looking for a table and feeling like everyone is staring at you. They also check IDs and take your temperature at the front. Currently, all the ordering is done via your cell phone. Scan the QVC code, and then view the menu and place your order to your table number and they carry out your drinks. Note that when ordering liquor, it requires you to order food with it, so they have a menu of $2 bar snacks. After the first round, we notated that we had already ordered snacks, and were not required to buy more with every drink purchase. But they did check for the snacks when the drinks were brought out. I've only tried the margarita and a dirty vodka martini, $9 and $10 respectively. DAMN. Those margaritas are GOOD and STRONG. I had 2 and i was....feeling no pain. My martini was also PERFECT. Worth the money, and if you get there during happy hour, the margs are only $5! I did also enjoy the little $2 package of trail mix with M&Ms. One thing I noticed was that the cup size seemed to change, one time i went and they were served in these short plastic cups and another time these taller plastic cups. I was a little concerned that there are inconsistent portions but I can't be sure. Will definitely be back, those drinks are FIRE and i want to try the food truck. I couldn't taste any mango as it was all masked by the strong tequila. I'm not sure if all margs are like this, but it could have been because the ratio of tequila to everything else was off. My friends and I all agreed that the taste of alcohol was a bit too strong for a drink like a margarita. I did like the ease of ordering drinks. A magical circus of a place. Never mind they have a real circus wagon out on the side, out of which they serve Italian food. Never mind the strings of colored lights that make the back yard look like a carnival midway. Never mind that the Vortex theater is right inside. So if you are a paying customer, just beyond the velvet door curtain of the Vortex, there really ARE sword swallowers, lesbian ring masters, dancing dryads in water pools, and mega-gods of universal destruction. Actually what is behind the velvet door curtain changes every few weeks. When you go it may be nuclear rainbow unicorns, cybernetic tap dancers and the Flaming King of the Empire of the Ashes. There will always be something interesting behind the Vortex velvet door for sure. However, it is just as magical out in the bar. The bar magic goes on all night rather than ending at the one hour and forty minute mark. Of course, part of the magic is EtOH. EtOH produces far more intoxicating illusions than anything that goes on in the main hall of the Vortex. (EtOH is chemical-ese for ethyl alcohol, otherwise known as booze.) The Butterfly Bar serves first rate EtOH. Most of the house drinks are girly cocktails of classical or recent provenance. These are fine for what they are. However, they do one wicked little number called the Whippoorwill which is fine bourbon, cold brew coffee, New Orleans style chicory and foam with secret flavor ingredients. The Ghost of Sherlock Holmes appears and takes you down all the secret passages of the house. The magic is generally enhanced by broadcasts of best-of scenes from past Vortex productions, projected on one wall. There are projections of obscure documentaries on another wall. These have no sound, and I can promise you, you have never heard of any of them. There is a vending machine on the wall that will sell you thirty dollar forks, knives and spoons that will save the world. (I am not making that last detail up. Check it out for yourself.) There are cats who run the establishment and have more authority than the bartenders. One particular kingly and somnolent feline decided he was going to take his nightly nap at my table on the bench. He claimed his space where I otherwise would have preferred to sit, and owned half of my table for the rest of the night. He occasionally roused himself for twenty seconds just to make sure no service dogs had entered the establishment. After that, he returned to his regal slumbers. The most magical parts of the establishment however, are not the food truck, the colored lights, the video loops, the drinks or the cats, The most magical parts of the Butterfly bar are the patrons. This is one of the most fantastical people watching spots in Austin. It is a world of twenty nine different genders. It is a world of eighty nine different art forms. It is a world of magical costumes to die for. It is a world of back stories that makes your Ghost of Sherlock Holmes seem relatively tame. The imaginary characters on the Vortex Stage have nothing on the real-life characters that populate the Butterfly Bar So come to the Butterfly Bar and watch all of the limits of your plain-jane everyday reality dissolve. Bring your magic hat even if it is just an old Chicago White Sox cap you got as a kid at a ballgame. After half an hour, you will be able to reach inside that baseball cap and pull out a talking marmoset. read more

Kind of hidden from the main road, the Butterfly Bar has one sign and a gate that you follow to an outdoor garden full of twinkle lights and laughing people. There's a stage where there's often performances and a little indoor cabin part where you order drinks. It's almost pitch black outside at night, but makes for a fun date and casual atmosphere. I ordered a mojito and it was delicious and strong. I would 100% recommend going here if you're in the area! So fun and unique. read more

Meh experience, at best. Bartenders don't seem to know what they are doing and can answer no questions about their drinks. They're also relatively expensive for the experience (for not knowing how to explain them). Also, I just don't find them good. Strong alcohol taste, and not in a good way... On another note... So I'm at a bar that is playing Office Space while a band is playing covers of the Doors. I'm also pretty sure I just crashed someone's backyard, but no, I'm at the Butterfly Bar. This hidden spot was a fun find while I was killing time in the neighborhood. It's a tad bit hard to figure out how the place works, so lemme tell ya. Enter from what I'll call the back yard. We've been coming here for years. We've brought friends and family. We've introduced lots of folks to this space and hyped up how amazing, cozy, and safe it feels to hang here. The last 3 times I've come have just progressively been worse and worse. The bartenders have been rude, dismissive, and now they straight up just ignore guests. Last night I watched so many folks dealing with the distracted bartenders and trying to figure out how to order while actively being ignored by someone 4 ft away behind the bar. Is this just how it is going to be now? Your drinks are expensive and they weren't even poured evenly in the two drinks I ordered. I've seen the staff yell at the crowd not to form lines and I've had other bartenders yelling to form lines. I have no idea what is going on with the staff but I hope everyone gets on the same page and learns how to treat the customers. Patrizi's staff is next level with their service and ordering a drink totally kills the vibe. This space used to be so chill and welcoming and now everyone behind the bar is totally checked out. For those businesses that like to ride the "We're so Austin, we were Austin before Austin was Austin" train, they should be asking The Butterfly Bar what that really means. The Butterfly Bar IS the best representation of Austin authentic IMO. First, check your attitude at the door because if you are an attituded jackass you will stand out like a total douche. This alone takes my review from 4 to 5 stars. Second, say hi to Radius the bar cat who roams from table to table and is not afraid to jump up next to you for affection, or kick your ass if you pet his belly. Third, order food from Patrizi's found in a trailer right outside (and they deliver to you). I do believe this might be the best Italian food I've had in Austin. Fourth, stock up on cocktails. They are creative and semi-hand-crafted. The bartenders are super nice, quick, accommodating and detail oriented. You do have to fetch your drinks yourself, but the quaintness found within makes it painless. Fifth, don't miss an opportunity to go potty here. Seriously - the bathrooms are some of the most unique I have seen in Austin ... pretty rad actually. And lastly, the ambiance cannot be beat: casual but elegant, comfortable but not tacky, romantic but not exclusively so, and artsy funky without being pretentious. P.S. They have a large outdoor deck and yard-type set-up - don't be surprised if you find yourself wishing upon a star that The Butterfly Bar never ever closes. read more

The servers are friendly, the patio is large and beautiful, they even have a greenhouse you can sit in for a magical evening among the garden. They have a place for everyone. Just sit back and enjoy the music, dancing, or movies.. whichever are going on at the time! They have a great selection of wines and craft cocktails that alway please. They are a little on the pricey side as 2 margs were about $18, but they were perfectly mixed and not too sweet, so I'll take it. Definitely a cool spot! I found my self ordering drinks here when we came to seek our Patrizi's food truck. I was actually surprised at the selection of drinks they had. I immediately fell in love with the cocktail menu. The bartender working that night was great. My first cocktail was a surprise from my husband, the butterfly nectar. It was simply divine! I loved the addition of the flower in it too! Next I ordered the Blossom cocktail and it was just as beautiful and tasty as the first! They also have a nice selection of beer and wine too. It's been a long time since I've seen fellow Yelp Elite/former co-worker/friend Kelsey E. and she was down for Butterfly Bar. I like the spacious outdoor patio and vintage look. There is plenty of space and you can bring your dog, too. The food truck outside was Patrizi's, didn't try it but Kelsey E. said they have a good veg dish ;) She had white wine and I had red sangria (a generous size) and it was just good to chill out...
